Anti-Masturbation Crusader Christine O'Donnell is Master of Her Domain

by: Lindsay Beyerstein  |  The Media Consortium | News Analysis

Christine O'Donnell is master of her domain. The deeply conservative Tea Party darling won the Republican senate nomination in Delaware last night with a stunning upset of establishment favorite Rep. Mike Castle.

O'Donnell rose to prominence as an anti-masturbation crusader in the 1990s. Jillian Rayfield of Talking Points Memo has video of O'Donnell's 1996 appearance on MTV's series "Sex in the Nineties" in which she and her colleagues from the Savior's Alliance for Lifting the Truth Ministry. (SALT) O'Donnell warns teens that masturbation is adultery that will undermine their future marital sex lives: "You're going to be pleasing each other, and if he already knows what pleases him and he can please himself, then why am I in the picture?" she asks.

Lest you think the anti-masturbation ministry was a youthful indiscretion, O'Donnell was still listed as the contact person for SALT on a web directory last updated in 2009. Christina Bellantoni of TPMDC reports that O'Donnell remained an outspoken social conservative on the campaign trail.

Blessing in Disguise?

Suzi Khimm of Mother Jones sees O'Donnell's victory as a potential blessing in disguise for Democrats:

Ultimately, though, the biggest benefactor of an O'Donnell victory could be the Democratic Party, as she has a significantly weaker shot against the likely Democratic contender, lawyer and county executive Chris Coons. [...] If the GOP loses Delaware, it could completely blow its chance at getting enough seats for a Senate majority.

Adele Stan of AlterNet reports that, as of 3 o'clock on Wednesday morning, former New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte was still locked in a dead heat with Tea Party favorite Ovide Lamontagne for the Republican Senate nomination. Does Ayotte's name sound familiar? That's probably because she made a name for herself as the anti-abortion Attorney General behind Ayotte vs. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, Beth Saunders reports for RH Reality Check.

If either of these Republican nominee proves too extreme for the voters of New Hampshire, the Democrats could pick up the senate seat being vacated by Republican Judd Gregg.

This woman is a 39 year old

This woman is a 39 year old single Catholic. She has no right to preach abstinence if she's not still a virgin, in my view. And if she's single as the result of divorce, well, there goes the whole Catholic thing out the window, right?

Another misfit for the

Another misfit for the Republican Party. And there are people out there who are idiotic enough to buy into this. That's what's truly sad.

OMG, guys! Has she never

OMG, guys! Has she never heard of mutual masturbation?

Will anyone get the Surgeon

Will anyone get the Surgeon General and officially declare the GOP dead? Candidates like these represent a departure from rational and sane people who represent anyone but a few wingnuts like Sarah Palin.
I am not angry with her. I am angry with the people who don't realize that we really do need good government and giving us nothing but Sarah Palins, Glenn Becks and Fox Comedy types is not funny.

Sounds to me like she's got

Sounds to me like she's got issues with Her Man having any idea what feels good... determined that he'll never learn from her that sex can be pleasant for him, and terrified that he'll dump her for his own hand if he actually realizes it on his own.

Sorta grok why she remains single and, presumably, untouched.

Did she invent a 'new' word

Did she invent a 'new' word this morning on GMA? George Step asked her about Karl Roves' comments about her... and she said, "Everything he is saying is UNFACTUAL...". So did she pull a Sarah Palin, already?

"You're going to be pleasing

"You're going to be pleasing each other, and if he already knows what pleases him and he can please himself, then why am I in the picture?"

WTF?? Cuz a hand feels nothing like a woman, lady. Otherwise why would any man with a hand and a tube of lotion bother with a girlfriend. Anyway, even as a girl I find that statement pretty boneheaded.

Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? Don't these Tea Party people want government out of their lives and a smaller government. How will you catch people who masturbate? Will homes come with cameras linked to the nearest masturbation police unit? Will it create a log-jam in our court system and require higher taxes for more courts. How long should prison sentences be because gosh we don't want those people doing community service. Uh oh, more taxes for more prisons. I think it might even require a government agency.

where do some jerks get off ?

where do some jerks get off ?

Scary!! Has she suggested

Scary!! Has she suggested rounding up people who wear glasses yet? Do I need to rush out and get lasik?

its all good

its all good

TRULY modest women DONOT

TRULY modest women DONOT continually talk-->thereby visualizing as they speak-->male sexual organs & activities, w/ or w/out partners. She = the men who are always "concerned" about abortion but have so few children themselves--just a "legitimate" excuse to bring obsessive sexuality to the forefront of the discussion & not having it labeled porno.

“The economic stimulus is

“The economic stimulus is masturbation”

This becomes the slogan of the 2010 GOP

GIRLS:
Life is all right in America

BOYS:
If you're all white in America

GIRLS
Here you are free and you have pride

BOYS
Long as you stay on your own side

GIRLS
Free to be anything you choose

BOYS
Free to wait tables and shine shoes

12:20 "where do these jerks

12:20 "where do these jerks get off" - HA!

I feel genuine pity for these people. Can I go ahead and promise the *outdated* Catholics that God and Augustine are not up in heaven with a checklist of who is touching their own body in the warmer parts?

How about preaching about the virtues of forgiveness, compassion and patience? Somehow I feel like that gets you further with the Big Guy than how many times you have NOT touched your goodies.

If she isn't proposing

If she isn't proposing making masturbation illegal, I do not see the problem.

So she has unusual views on sex. Don't liberals want people to be free to have unusual views on sex?

Think about DE for a moment,

Think about DE for a moment, corporate paradise. Some of the nastiest financial juntas have set up shop there, and Biden's defense contractors. And they attack, they extort and they just about rule. Politics includes distraction, irresistable distraction, while credit card companies churn in the background, data mine and profit. Lady Masturbation will cure what ails ya, you've got to believe in
"the Democracy" as it's provided, via broadband, to your prison cell.
How does it feel to be entertained? To be played?
To be taken in, to be drawn around the bend?

Go on, everyone. Drink the

Go on, everyone. Drink the Truthout Kool-Aid. As if everyone who cares about social and poltical ethics should also masturbate freely for good health. It's like red wine! Lowers cholesterol! Heightens libido! Give me a break. The framing of this story sickens me, especially since I've heard the personal stories of numerous sex offenders and how lust and masturbation led them to where they are. You buy into the the sex-positive spin, too blind to see how truly devastating the emotional and spiritual consequences are. Sex is good, yeah, and I'd say Catholics are a little bit more in the light about why it's good.

And shame on you for using this supposed scapegoat as a tool to attack the Tea Party. First of all, I'm sure 90% of all Tea Partiers masturbate and would laugh at O'Donnell's attempts to stop them. Second, you alienate true progressives who very much would like to stand with you in opposition to the Tea Party but get the cold shoulder due to your misguidedness.

Anyone who thinks a Christian position on masturbation is about prosecution and not about love is misguided. If you spent all the time you masturbated reading, maybe you'd have half a brain left to figure out why this article is a non-issue.

She's pretty hot. I ended up

She's pretty hot. I ended up rubbing one out while watching the video.

And now Hannity and Limbaugh

And now Hannity and Limbaugh will turn their bullhorns on her Democratic opposition. Let's see if stupidity, ignorance, and racism win the day in Delaware, and this Palin imposter becomes a Senator. Her candidacy is another reason all Democrats and Progressives need to vote on November 2. No excuses, unless you want a Rethuglican Senate and Congress spending the next two years trying to rescind Social Security and Medicare, or impeach Obama for being a Kenyan!

Yeah, the theory that this

Yeah, the theory that this is good for the Dems because this lady is a nut case who will make it easier for the Democrat to win...

Are the R's so stupid they don't care? or is something else going on. This theory only works if the election isn't stolen. After 8 years of throwing electronic voting machines into nearly all precincts across the country is anyone confident elections can't be stolen?

@Julian... I'm sure 90% of

@Julian...

I'm sure 90% of all Tea Partiers masturbate"

For some reason, I agree.

It's not just

It's not just Republicans.
Remember that Clinton fired his outstanding Surgeon General because she advocated masturbation as an alternative to inappropriate intercourse.

Julian @5:01 -

Julian @5:01 - Do you not realize that TruthOut gets the majority of its articles from other publications?  This one was from The Media Consortium.  TruthOut provides us with stories we might not otherwise read because it would require pouring through more publications than is humanly possible to do on a daily basis.  The mainstream media (which is NOT in any way, shape or form liberal) abdicated its responsibility to keep us informed about what our government is doing after being bought out by corporate hacks.  I only trust media that is not funded by advertising revenues.

I personally wouldn't vote for anyone who was stupid enough to voice such a ridiculous opinion in public or proposes any laws telling me what I can or can't do with my own body.  Masturbation is safe sex and it prevents people from going out and having unsafe sex or raping.  Maybe this is why the "Christians" have become anything but Christian these days -- they're pent up sexually, which tends to make folks mean.  Instead of worrying about what people do in privacy, which is no one's business, the Tea Partiers and the Christians should be spending their time investigating all the crap they're being spoon fed by the republican party on behalf of their corporate interests.

FYI-the Tea Party is NOT a grassroots organization.  It was started by operatives of the Republican party, it is funded by corporate billionaires and its followers are easily led sheep who are allowing the wolves to lead them directly to the slaughterhouse.

We should be more interested

We should be more interested in how she spends her campaign funds!

@ OligarchyNot: Just because

@ OligarchyNot:

Just because someone airs public comments on why she believes masturbation is wrong (for good reason) doesn't mean that 14 years later she is now running for Delaware Senate for the specific reason of prohibiting masturbation.

Don't you see that the right wing has tried to attack many liberal politicians using the same fallacious logic?

I understand Truthout is independent, and the Tea Party is not. Kudos to Truthout. However it needs to understand if it gives voice to arrogant bias in this way it's no different than Glenn Beck.

The bottom line is that we

The bottom line is that we do not want to be represented by right-wing moralistic extremists (who also just happen to be corporate shills . . .) like this person.
