Arizona Politics: You Have Now Entered the Twilight Zone

After watching Wednesday's Arizona gubernatorial debate, I noticed a comment on my Facebook page opining that if Gov. Jan Brewer wins the election after her abysmal and somewhat bizarre debating performance, we in Arizona have officially entered the Twilight Zone.

Of course, many of us remember this old TV show, where reality is bent and outcomes are usually very scary. To me, this was a fitting analogy because, aside from Brewer's deer-in-the-headlights, several-second silence in her opening statement, I've never seen so much stumbling, poor use of grammar and downright juvenile debating tactics as were employed by our governor last night. Now I'm only assuming that Brewer's community college radiological technician training, which makes up the sum of her formal education, did not likely include debate as part of its curriculum ... but after last night's dismal performance, it's now very clear why she's stonewalled Terry Goddard's repeated requests for additional debates outside of this one required event. Since her performance is pretty much a mirror of her acumen as governor, it is also pretty obvious that, failing a major drop in her present 20-point lead in the polls over Goddard, her election will prove once and for all that Arizona's voters are more concerned about grossly overblown immigration threats than the welfare of our failing state.

A recent report by the Pew Hispanic Trust shows that illegal immigration numbers are down by over two-thirds, and recent reports by the FBI have indicated that crime is significantly down in Arizona. Another government report shows that undocumented immigrants actually improve the economy and boost wages and jobs. The drumming up of fear tactics on the part of Brewer, including her now infamous "beheadings in the desert" claim (which she refused to address last night both during and after the debate) has now been revealed to be the only ace she is holding to guarantee her election bid. Her mendacity about balancing the state budget, an inability to articulate how she plans to bring jobs to the state and her sidestepping the fact that her top advisers have well-publicized ties to prison corporations - prisons that are now shown to be unsafe to the general public - all added up to show a woman who is sadly out of her depth and is clutching the life preserver of the "immigration problem" as her only hope. Since this one issue is what catapulted her ahead of her primary opponents when she was seriously flagging back in April (due to all the aforementioned inabilities to govern adequately and a very un-Republican tax increase), it's hardly surprising that this now shopworn tactic is one she's planning with which to stick.

So, why are so many voters willing to overlook our climbing unemployment, unsafe prisons, repeated untruths about everything from headless bodies to a father's WWII service and a failing economy? How can so many ignore a failing economic situation that was in part brought on by Brewer herself as a result of her signing into law SB 1070, and which has continued to decline under her watch? Why is there such a backlash against people who enter this state without documents or overstay visas in an attempt to find a better life with more opportunities? I've written before about the racial undertones that lead people to support the now enjoined law SB 1070, but I also think this goes beyond racism for some people. This is an unwillingness to face facts and a need to stick with the scapegoating, which has, once again, overtaken our country in yet another chapter of our long, dismal history of immigrant bashing, especially during bad economic times.

Or, perhaps, we have simply stepped through the looking glass, where wrong is right and up is down. Whether or not this is the case, if we're not careful, we will find that we have indeed crossed over into the Twilight Zone and the next four years will be very scary indeed.

Community colleges have some

Community colleges have some pretty good communication courses. I think her problem is incipient dementia. Another Reagan.

....illegal immigration

....illegal immigration numbers are down by over two-thirds, and recent reports by the FBI have indicated that crime is significantly down in Arizona.....

Yes, fewer illegals, less crime

He wrote:

That is completely false. That is a LIE. There is no such report. I think he means that absurd corporate "report" put out to fool workers. Lets see, we have very high unemployment, so the solution is to import millions more workers.

God Bless my dear departed

God Bless my dear departed Father. He used to tell me that "Knowledge is Power" . I listened sporadically, and tried to become as educated and well spoken as I could. I think he would be proud, however, he would be greatly dismayed by the "dumbing down" of America, especially American Politics and those running for office today. Having ALL gone through the "Looking Glass", we find ourselves surrounded by idiots and idealogues who PRAISE ignorance and abhor Knowledge. Racists and Right wing nut jobs seek to overtake the running of our Country. Is Anybody else out there as terrified at that prospect as I am? If you are, and you're of voting age, I urge you to exersize your rights and VOTE in the November election. The "Know nothings" seek to take power and WILL, if elected, from those who don't vote. If you don't vote then you have no right to complain about the debacle that ensues. STOP the dull and ignorant from attaining even MORE power than Bush. VOTE out the "Know Nothings", ie; regressive Republi-WON'T party of NO! and keep competence and ability in Washington.

Brewer must be channeling

Brewer must be channeling Palin....the former Miss Alaska w/ the sports journalism degree. Gov. Brewer has a long way to go to match Caribou Barbie who went to 5 colleges for the one degree. On the other hand, Palin's a genius at the shell game and working the big tent crowd.

Amy , you are PATHETIC .

Amy , you are PATHETIC . common sense would tell even the simple minded that ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL in no uncertain terms . Look at what is happening in Mexico , terrorist drug lords who are more than willing to murder anyone who gets in their way , police , military , politician or civilian . These people are VICIOUS and EVIL . We are spending hundreds of millions a year fighting the drug wars but leave our borders wide open . Obviously our leadership in Washington are bought and paid for Wh_res.

Marvin Harris's book, Cows,

Marvin Harris's book, Cows, Pigs, Wars, Witches. Talks about the role of scapegoating can play in society.

One could even say he predicted the increasing role of scapegoats in American Society.

Arminius Aurelius, What would Marcus Aurelius think of your post above?

-Everywhere and all times it is within your power to to accept reverently your present condition, to behave justly to those about you, and to exert your skill to control your thoughts, so that nothing shall steal into them without being well examined.

-Marcus Aurelius

AMY...I THINK YOU HAVE BEEN

AMY...I THINK YOU HAVE BEEN MOLESTED INTELLECTUALLY BY THE ETHNIC STUDIES CROWD...ILLEGALS HAVE TAKEN THE POOREST AMERICANS JOBS...WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND COULD ARGUE THIS IS GOOD FOR AMERICA...ILLEGALS BEHIND YOUR BACK THINK AMERICANS ARE CHUMPS....YOU ARE VERY NAIVE

AMY..YOU MUST HAVE BEEN

AMY..YOU MUST HAVE BEEN MOLESTED INTELLECTUALLY BY THE ETHNIC STUDIES CROWD...ILLEGALS HAVE TAKEN THE POOREST AMERICANS JOBS..HOW CAN THAT FACT BE GOOD FOR AMERICA...ILLEGALS BEHIND OUR BACKS THINK WE ARE CHUMPS...AND IN FACT WE ARE IF WE DISPLACE CITIZENS JOBS AND REWARD CRIMINAL IMMIGRANTS..KAFKAS DREAM WORLD IS OUR REALITY IF YOUR REASONING..BECOMES THE NORM..

Ever notice that when people

Ever notice that when people attack the writer of an article by a man, they are more likely to use his last name to address him? But when it's a female writer, then it's "Amy." Wonder why that is?

To those who are attacking, do your research. Because clearly what you think is common sense is just crap. Many illegal immigrants pay money into local, state and federal taxes; and they pay even more in states with high sales tax and no income tax, like Florida. In MOST cases, they get minimal benefits from that money because they don't already cannot legally use most social programs. I know, you think most illegal immigrants are using food stamps and state aid, but your wrong, and you won't find a single legitimate report which says otherwise. And if you've ever bothered to look at the state aid programs in the country you'll find many people have to prove legal residency to use them, WIC being one of few examples to the contrary.

And you also can't say that the illegal immigrants are causing higher crime based on drug lords are doing. Because despite what Brewer told you, most drug mules are not illegal aliens. Even the border patrol said she was wrong on that. You already have a hard enough time sneaking illegals into this country, drug runners aren't going to double down their risks. They use people who can get into the country legally, often white people.

I think everyone here needs to watch A Day Without A Mexican, and read the sources it's research numbers come from. They might learn something. Or you could just go to the Migration Policy Institute and find several of the (fully independent) studies you don't think exist.

...in order to step through

...in order to step through the looking glass you first have to see your reflection in it to know it's there, AZ is but an example of the failed state(s)...

Anonymous @ 15:33 on 9/04:

Anonymous @ 15:33 on 9/04: Perhaps more than "incipient." Alcohol-related/induced, more like.

Carl @ 16:00: You make, in your first observation, the common error of confusing correlation with causation. In your second observation, you simply don't know what you're talking about. Do a bit of research, as Titania has suggested, instead of smugly asserting that what you "know" is "true," even though it's false.

Arminius Aurelius and cheyennebode: Immigration, legal or not, is NOT nearly the issue, nor of the significance, which you both seem anxious to attribute to it.

Ms. McMullen: AZ has been in the twilight zone for a long, long time. Restoring the current corrupt Rethug administration and legislative majority likely will just make that occupation permanent. But maybe, just maybe, DoJ can put Sharf Joe and his lap-dog Andrew Thomas into one of Joe's tent-city jails.

Let's assume for a moment

Let's assume for a moment that most conservatives in Arizona are not racist. If we take them as a group, most share something more biding than anything they might be against: Age.

The Baby Boomers wish upon wish that their version of the world would be spawned in perpetuance. But their lifestyles and dreams have cost generations of people dearly in environmental costs, consumption, and waste. What else is there to do?

Blame it on the immigrants who can't vote / voice against you.

Arizona is full of sequestered residences where unemployment means nothing and gossip means everything.

@Carl, I just want you to

@Carl, I just want you to know that, as reported by Bloomberg, there is a report from The Federal Reserve Bank of SF showing that "Immigration has no “significant” effect on the number of jobs available to U.S.-born workers and helps boost incomes and productivity over time"

There is also a study by National Bureau of Economic Research that shows immigrants do not crowd out jobs for native-born workers and
"a one percent increase in employment in a US state, attributable only to immigration, is associated with a 0.4 to 0.5 percent increase in income per worker in that state."

I do not write lies, and your accusations do not bear up. Perhaps you should stop listening to hate faux news and radio and start doing some objective research on this subject for a change.

For those of you who don't

For those of you who don't recognize the name used by commentator Arminius Aurelius, it is a German nationalist, if not outright neo-Nazi moniker. As Wiki notes "In 1945 by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen, an alternate history novel describing a world in which Nazi Germany did not declare war on the United States in December, 1941, Operation Arminius is the code name for the German plan for the invasion of the United States."

Left winger Cesar Chavez

Left winger Cesar Chavez held protest marches against the use of illegal immigrant labor.

Was he racist too ?

I am a life long far left winger and I will support any politician that deports illegals and fines and jails thier employers.

They are scabs that drive down wages.

Left Winger - you're so

Left Winger - you're so right. Maybe the righties will see the Chavez saw what the illegals will do for wages of the common man/woman. I'm with you all the way on the employers. If they were to fine them or even confiscate the business we would never have an illegal issue.

Well lets look back at afew

Well lets look back at afew of the "politicians" we have had here in Az. Anyone remember Mecham? He was a used car dealer who called young black children "pickaninnys", and other assorted racist terms. He was our governor and he got recalled. Then there was Gov Symington, another gov who went down for being a crook. Now we have Jan Brewer, who is just a pawn in the wheel of the crooks who have been raping Az for decades. Lets not forget McPain and Kyle, Or Mr Russell Pearce who spoke at a Nazi rally, and was the creep who introduced SB1070. This stated has been well and truly screwed for longer than I can count. I don't think there is anything that can be done to correct this in the near future, but please people, get out and VOTE. An vote for Goddard here in Az.

This state is so screwed,

This state is so screwed, first we had gov Mecham, a racist idiot if there ever was one, we recalled him. Then we had Symington, who was involved with McPain in the 90's & the Keating five, anyone remember that? A precursor of todays raping of America. Now we have Brewer, who is actually just a pawn for the raping of Az. Please people in Az vote for Goddard. VOTE like your life depends on it, because it does.

Someone once told me that it

Someone once told me that it is illegal to work a medical student intern more than 80 hours a week, but that if that law were followed, the medical system would collapse.

Illegal workers of all types keep the American dream going.

As an Evil NY Liberal, I have thousands of black UN helicopters at my disposal and could solve this whole undocumented worker thing in a year. This is why I am not going to do it.

It is your job that will be destroyed in the process. It isn't just that tomatos will cost a few cents more. It's that the state and federal governments profit from collecting taxes from undocumented workers but don't pay out as much to serve them. Thus giving us the illusion we are paying our fair share of the tax burden.

Our employers pay us a percentage of the profits. If more is spent on labor or on costs because of increased labor in other industries, our wages go down.

We who are "Legal" are all vampires, drawing our sustenance from those who are kept outside the system.

All the black UN helicopters in the world won't save me from the wrath of America if I break THAT addiction.

Ah yes, as someone mentioned

Ah yes, as someone mentioned earlier, lets not forget sheriff Joe, a crook of the highest magnitude, who has the DOJ on his heels for not giving up evidence requested. Think the DOJ can take sheriff Joe down? Jeez, I hope so, but no one else has been able to, we are well and truly screwed. I want my country back, sigh... .

Thanks for a great article,

Thanks for a great article, Amy -- and for your work and writing, which is much needed. I am also sick for what we are doing to this state, and embarrassed to have a Governor who can't even put together a decent sentence. Pearce is a sad and pathetic character as well. The real estate-industrial and prison-industrial complex is just using Brewer as a tool...and not a very bright tool at that.

Why don't we REQUIRE multiple debates? For heavens sake, don't the citizens at least deserve that?

Left-Winger: Why don't you

Left-Winger: Why don't you do back to school and read about Berlin in the 1930s before you go frothing about people here "illegally"? btw, unless you possess Native American blood, YOU don't belong here, either. That would make sense since you're not a Left Winger at all, but the opposite, a monosyllabic poseur.
