Biden: Republicans Silent on Issues That Matter to Middle Class

Vice presidential candidate rallies Pa. voters.

Langhorne, Pa. - A sometimes angry Sen. Joe Biden on Friday railed against the "abject failure" of Republicans to help middle-class Americans cope with shrinking wages, job losses and the rising cost of gas, groceries, health insurance and college.

The Delaware senator and Democratic vice presidential nominee brought a crowd of 1,200 people at Maple Point Middle School to their feet by pointing out "what I didn't hear" from Republicans at their nominating convention this week.

"The silence of the Republican Party was deafening on jobs, on health care, on all the things that matter!" Biden shouted over the din.

"What do you talk about when you have nothing to say?" he said. "What do you talk about when you can't explain eight years of failure?"

Biden said he and his presidential running mate, Sen. Barack Obama, want to give families an extra $1,000 tax incentive to help them through the recent economic downturn.

"We're going to give [oil companies] $4 billion in tax breaks but we can't give you a thousand bucks?" Biden shouted.

Less than 18 hours after Sen. John McCain accepted the Republican Party's nomination for president, Biden and his wife, Jill, came to this suburb north of Philadelphia to rally supporters and sway undecided voters. They also campaigned at an invitation-only gathering Friday morning at the Ironworkers Local Union 401 in Philadelphia.

White, blue-collar voters in battleground states such as Pennsylvania are considered crucial to winning the race to the White House.

"The American people are looking for a government that will help them get back up on their feet," Biden said. "I'm ready, Barack Obama is ready, so let's go win this thing!"

Biden and Obama also face the task of attracting voters who supported Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primaries -- voters like Lois Lambing, of Fairless Hills, Pa., and Nicole Fields, of Langhorne.

"We're former Hillary girls," Lambing said. "The day after she spoke at the [Democratic] convention, I walked around in a state of depression. Everything she said is why I was for her in the first place."

They said, though, that true Clinton supporters will embrace Obama and Biden.

"If they take a good hard look at the issues of the country and why they supported Hillary, they'll understand that Obama is going to represent them," Lambing said.

But nothing Biden said Friday was going to sway the opinions of Gerry Young, of Warminster, Pa., and Kathleen Metzler, of Richboro, Pa.

"We're pro-life Catholics, and we're disgusted by him," said Young, who kept a white rosary wrapped around her right hand during the event. "It's so heinous, his view."

Biden's support of abortion rights is contrary to the teachings of the Roman Catholic church. His Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is staunchly anti-abortion, a position that convinced Young and Metzler to vote for McCain.

They said Biden's stance is "a deal-breaker" for faithful Catholics.

For Arthur Cohn, who came to the event from Lower Makefield Township with Doreene Kaplan and Jeanne Bray, Biden's abortion-rights position is one aspect that makes him appealing.

"He's always for progressive legislation, like giving women the right to choose," Cohn said. "He's one of the good guys with the white hats."

Kaplan said Biden's penchant for putting his foot in his mouth belies his ability to think his way through complex problems.

"He can shoot from the hip sometimes with what he says, but he's very thoughtful when he makes decisions," Kaplan said.

On stage Friday, Biden quickly shed his jacket, loosened his tie, rolled up his sleeves and paced the stage while answering questions from the audience and a few people chosen to tell their stories to the crowd.

David Zaiser, of Quakertown, Pa., said he's an information-technology professional who is dealing with the high costs of health insurance and other necessities.

"I should not be struggling in this economy, but I have to borrow money all the time to pay my bills, fill my gas tank," Zaiser said. "We don't know how we're going to heat our home."

Biden talked about fixing Social Security by raising the cap on taxes for people making more than $250,000. McCain, he said, wants to privatize the program, an idea that drew boos from the crowd.

"How would you like to be getting Social Security based on the market right now?" Biden said.

I understand that, if one is

I understand that, if one is completely in agreement with Catholic doctrine, that you would consider abortion wrong. However, we don't live in a theocratic society, and I don't want ANY religion dictating our laws. I would respectfully suggest that those opposed to abortion work toward reducing abortions through social programs that reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, through honest, respectful and open dialog with others, through leading by example in all facets of the religion you espouse. No one has the right to force others into a religious viewpoint, much less enact laws based on a single point of view. ~~ Lane Baldwin - alifewithspirit.blogspot.com

I could not agree more with

I could not agree more with the opinion expressed regarding the Catholic doctrine and those who follow it - however it seems to me that in view of the fact that now 50% of children are being born out of wedlock, sired by different fathers no less, something here is missing in the equation. I am not pro-abortion but I am for freedom of choice, however I do not with to pay for other peoples' poor choices and that is exactly what is happening. The ultra Christian FANATICAL wing (yes I am Christian myself but over a life-time found that "many ways lead to Rome" (no pun intended) seem to embrace the fact that their children are being downright stupid and are NOT following the guidelines of their respective faith. (like abstinence or "God forbid BIRTH CONTROL." Since when did the United States of America become a country where religion over-rides common sense and is allowed to run the country into the ground economically while the GREEDY SUPER-WEALTHY exploit religion as a tool to further dumb-down the masses which they control via the media? It is shocking just how many people are unaware that they are BEING USED by the great GOP and their henchmen under the pretense of "righteousness" and pushing their creed down the throats of every American. If parents were leading by example, how could this happen and why is the middle-class acting like sheep? We get old and die because we just can't take it any longer.................. I feel for my children and grand-children, this is not going to go away overnight and the economic mess rests squarely on the shoulders of those who have been in power for the past 8 years not watching the "shop" while touting to be a "WAR PRESIDENT." It would be downright funny if it were not so sad and so many people did not have do die or be affected for the rest of their lives by the poor choices that were made in just about all areas I can think of during this administration. And where were Bush and Cheney, the former who cannot even finish one sentence that makes sense during the days of the Vietnam War? Getting high or being drunk?

Again, the Republicants are

Again, the Republicants are going to make this election all about the right to life as it pertains to abortions. Meanwhile, many Americans have more life threatening issues to worry about, like if their loved one is going to make it back from Iraq, and the surge of storms that are connected to global warming, hurricanes, floods, twisters, and wildfires. People are worried they will not have enough gas to get to work, their emergency savings are dwindling (if they have any), and layoffs and home foreclosures are coming fast and furious. The Republicants are running on staying in Iraq forever, defeating Roe vs Wade, privatizing social security, and giving more tax cuts to the rich. If they win, they will have the mandate to do whatever they want, because obviously, the American people weren't listening.

Lane Baldwin, thank you or

Lane Baldwin, thank you or your thoughtful comment. People really need to take off their "one issue blinders" and look at ALL the problems we as a country and world face. Extremes only polarize and don't solve anything.

I truly feel sorry for

I truly feel sorry for people like Gerry Young. Her position is demented by a church that routinely protects sexual predators (its own priests) yet gives lip service to issues like the anti-abortion movement. If Gerry Young could somehow experience the real hypocrisy of her position and her church, then she would rush to embrace the party of choice, the Democrats. As a Democrat, I proudly support a woman's right to choose, especially when a pregnancy is life-threatening or is a result of rape or incest. As a human being, I do not support the use of abortion as a means to get rid of inconvenient fetuses. Something tells me, though, that very few women make that choice. Moreover, the ones who do make that choice will probably continue making that choice regardless of any laws passed in this country. Gerry Young and her friends need to rethink their position.

We need change! Now, this

We need change! Now, this election! C'mon Democrats! Liberty, Equality, Fraternity! Storm the Bastille!

Ah, Biden should have been

Ah, Biden should have been so concerned about the middle class who have gone bankrupt (a good percentage because of health issues) when he voted for the bankruptcy bill (ie the protect the credit card industry bill). That he chose to protect the credit card companies, most which make their home offices in Delaware, Biden's state, should not be forgotten.

I have read that Palin is a

I have read that Palin is a fabulous debater. Fast on her feet and charismatic. Joe Biden is going to have his hands full since so many Americans are taken in by style. In this election the VP debate may draw a bigger audience than the Presidential debate. That ain't good.

The last poster is right on.

The last poster is right on. Biden is no friend of the middle class. But in any case, there's no solution to the economy without cutting the military budget and ending the wars. Simple as that. Too bad the Dems don't want to talk about any of that. Once again I have no option but to vote third-party.

Its sad that people have

Its sad that people have such empty lives that they become fixed on emotional issues such as abortion and in the process fail to see the forest for the trees. Middle class life as Americans have come to believe they are entitled is in danger of disappearing. No tomorrow, not next week, but bit by bit so that in the next twenty five years the economic social landscape may be unrecognizable. Insurance, education, housing are becoming every year more out of reach for middle class people. States such as California are bankrupt-though not officially. And the real effect of getting Washington off our backs has been to throw responsibility for health, education, etc. into the laps of local governments who don't have the resources and are forced to make cuts-4 day school weeks and raise local taxes. We may in fact be at the end of an era. We produce little, but consume tremendous quantities of things on credit. This should be more troubling to us than the souls of the unborn, or stem cell research. But no, all the well meaning holier than thou types will vote away the future of the living to protect the rights of the "unborn". No small wonder that many of the founders of the nation feared godfearers more than the feared god.

When abortion was illegal

When abortion was illegal there were 5 times as many of them, statistically. If the so called "pro-lifers" really want to eliminate abortions, they'd be calling for brutally honest, medically accurate sex education. That's what I got, and I didn't have to marry some girl at age 17. What these religious idealogues REALLY want is to control the lives of women, and keep them breeding. Notice how much of the celebrity-chasing press is focusing on who's HAVING A BABY? I guess it keeps them from having to ask Joe Biden about why he pushed so hard to enact Bush's police state domestic wiretapping, or why he voted for the bankruptcy law change, which should have been called the indentured servitude act. This election is so about the lesser of two evils (or more properly, four evils). Fortunately, the Bush / McSame crowd have a track record now of deep, entrenched, systematic evil, rather than the more dilitante evil of the Dems. What a lame "choice". As usual. Oh, and why the hell can't these Dems counter-punch? They're being called "elitists" by a bunch of spoiled rich brats, once again, and they can't even say something like: "Well, I know how many houses I own." I mean, they can't even retort to "tax and spend" with "borrow and spend a lot more"? Why can't they remind everybody how the deficit-lovers have impoverished even America's grandkids? In short, what the hell is wrong with these politicians? Hit back, guys!

Unfortunately, what I've

Unfortunately, what I've realized, what I'm sure many people have realized is that the Republicans will most likely NEVER do anything about Roe v. Wade or even gay-marriage for that reason. WHY? Because they NEED these issues to get those votes. There has to be something that "needs to be fixed." They can't run on their actual policies or they would lose. They worst part about their plan is that even if nothing changes with abortion, etc, they will still get these people's votes, year after year, election after election. They don't win because they do well in office. They win because of these automatic votes. It's like there are a group of people who will only vote for someone who wears an orange hat. It's really that meaningless and it's scary.

I don't understand how my

I don't understand how my governor, Palin, can hold the ideal that life begins at conception, but, it's ok to have an abortion if your life hangs in the balance. Parading her pregnant 17 yr. old daughter and future son-in-law in front of the cameras sends the message to teens that it's ok to be irresponsible with your body and your health. Jesus was a community organizer. Pontious Pilate was the governor. Just a thought.

Why is it that "observant

Why is it that "observant Catholics" and other Christians are only opposed to abortion, and not the war or the death penalty? The Pope opposes both, in addition to opposing abortion. Jesus himself was silent on the issues of abortion and gay marriage, but openly opposed the death penalty and war. He also taught that you should pay your taxes and help the poor. Biden may not be the ultimate friend of the working class, but he's a lot closer to it than any Republican politician.

Regarding the election

Regarding the election charade Redux-III : Obama is playing this campaign as if it were a game or a Harvard debate. How Ya Gonna Win the Fray When You Always Play "Above the Fray"? I'm starting to think he is no more serious as a candidate than McGoo. That means that this IS Oceania and that all the projected faces of the enemies and of the allies are creations of big brother, and all the candidates are creations of big brother.

Alaskadiva: Being male, I

Alaskadiva: Being male, I usually have little to say (except just be supportive) regarding abortion. I figure smarter people than me already said it. But something you said makes me want to finally put my two-cents in. I had always thought of Palin's position (pro-life except when mother's health is threatened) to be some kind of weak-kneed, lame excuse for an attempt at a centrist position. But I have decided that it is nothing but pure hypocrisy. I am not a parent, but if I was I would think that if I had to I should be GLAD to take a bullet for my child. Now, if you're a pro-lifer and you honestly believe that abortion is murder then you should be willing to die even if it only means that your child has a slim chance. It's not a centrist position, it's an incremental one.
