Biggest Document Leak in History Exposes Real War
(Image: Lance Page / t r u t h o u t)

Twelve weeks ago the Bureau of Investigative Journalism was given access to the biggest leak of military documents in history.

These documents formed a database of nearly 400,000 military logs recorded over six years of the Iraq war and covering the years 2004 to 2009.

There are over 37 million words used to recount military significant actions that took place across the entire country. This material provides an unrivalled portrait of one of the most controversial wars of the modern age.

For the first time the files reveal just how much the American military detailed the escalating violence in Iraq, and how this contrasts markedly to what the politicians said in public. This is the story behind the pronouncements – the uncensored detail Washington did not want us to know.

Key findings

The data reveals how hundreds of civilians were killed by coalition forces in unreported events.

There are numerous claims of prison abuse by coalition forces even after the Abu Ghraib scandal. The files also paint a disturbing portrait of widespread torture in Iraqi detention facilities.

As the war progresses the documents record a descent into chaos and horror as the occupation sparked civil war. In case after case, the logs record thousands of bodies, many brutally tortured, dumped on the streets of Iraq.

Through these reports we see, in military snapshots, the full impact the war had on Iraqis – men, women and children. The sheer scale of the deaths, detentions and violence is laid bare for the first time.

About the logs

The files were each recorded by soldiers operating on the ground and detail significant events. They are known as “SIGACTS”.

At the time each report was classified as “Secret” but the information contained is no longer militarily sensitive. In order to protect people mentioned in the reports the Bureau has removed all names and detailed grid references from the documents published on this site.

The files, leaked to the whistleblowers’ website Wikileaks, were made available to a select group of media outlets, including the Bureau, the Guardian, the New York Times, the German weekly Der Spiegel and French newspaper Le Monde.

Iraq Body Count, the agency that has been collating evidence of Iraq’s casualty numbers for many years, was also given access to the data.

Others involved include Sweden’s SVT and public interest lawyers.

The Bureau has made documentaries based on our findings for Dispatches and Al Jazeera English and Arabic.

Official response

We offered the United States Department of Defense the right to reply to our findings. They issued a statement which can be read here.

The paper trail now proves

The paper trail now proves that we have become them. What we've fought against is what we have become. What we used to abhor is what we now embrace. What used to disgust us has become our dinner table joke.

The DOD is correct about one

The DOD is correct about one thing only. Nobody wants to know. Ignorance is bliss.

what must we the people do

what must we the people do to hold the pentagon accountable--it is not enough that they send out this national security note to counter evidence of war crimes & crimes against humanity. Surely we can all together demand and get more accountability?

The Pentagon? They're not

The Pentagon? They're not the only ones who need to be held accountable. Pretty much anyone who was in the Bush administration including the two principles as well as all PNAC neo-cons have blood dripping from their hands.

We have not become THEM. We

We have not become THEM. We were THEM before we ever went to Iraq. We attacked a country that never attacked us and all so that our richest oil magnates could get richer. Anyone that believes anything else is not playing with a full deck or is willfully ignorant of the facts!

Exactly right, Samson.

Exactly right, Samson.

I dunno, if any serious

I dunno, if any serious student of the Vietnam colonial expedition remembers, we already know about real war. Korea, Lemay's incineration of Japanese civilians.. the list is endless. None of it stopped the Iraq war - most of the media, most US stooges, only a few wimpering procedural dissensions, inevitable, predictably, the criminal assaults wth fervor in 2003.

America is based on theft,

America is based on theft, it was stolen from the native Americans by European nations including my own so the guilt is collective. America is built on a rotten foundation.

Sage Vietnamese saying "the

Sage Vietnamese saying "the enemy wins if we become as they are/then [or the = phrase]. Agree with all posters above, but now it has finally become evident to all of us--no one can claim ignorance. Ultimate purpose of the military is to kill. Period. Intelligence governance directs its strong arm to only defend itself when attacked. There is a good reason for the military, but as everything it should be balanced from within and without=> NOT "going gangsbusters" to quote the words of PresGeorgeWBush.

INSTEAD of the real (Bush)

INSTEAD of the real (Bush) wars; why can't Obummer deliver US the domestic Real DEAL? FOOL!

How the west was really won

How the west was really won is a shameful legacy. same goes for the reasons we went to war in the middle east and the reasons we stay.

the people have lost this country, the corporate interests prevail.

we will have to relive the 1770's to get it back. IMHO

Go Wikileaks, go. Never

Go Wikileaks, go. Never stop. You are doing the only true reporting on the Bush/Obama wars. The mainstream media has failed again and again.

Bla,bla,bla. All that one

Bla,bla, bla. All that one needs to do is open ones eyes to see the TRUTH.
9/11 is an example.

We pointed out before the

We pointed out before the invasion of Iraq that the invasion took place because Cheney and the other members of the neo-conservatives wanted - as PNAC name suggests - to create the new American century: invading
Iraq would be The check mate move - at once upstaging AlQaeda by creating a US style democracy in the heart of its Middle East home, and occupying the key position militarily in the Middle East. The 21st would be - more than the 20th THE American century.

Alas - the PNAC people knew little about the Middle East and its people and in fact detonated the end of American world supremacy. Ironic!

I can't say what "all" the

I can't say what "all" the solution will be, but I can say part of it will be - regular people, making our own stuff. Stuff like alcohol to run internal combustion engines. Building and using solar, wind and the like to produce our own electricity. Even if we can't get off the grid and off the pump overnight we'll learn something about "making our own world". Right now we're dependent. People, not corporations, build extra-orbital vessels, people builds ships, cars, telephones....people build everything that gets built. But people don't control any of it. Making things for ourselves, and using it, is a step toward regaining control over our lives.

Many of the things exposed

Many of the things exposed in these new wikileaks I have actually been reading about here in truthout for the last couple of years. The myopic main stream media chooses not to cover much of this stuff.

No extended summary? No

No extended summary? No details? Just "We killed more than was reported at the time?"

As your headline says, it's the biggest document leak in history, and you can't make a story out of it? "Exposes Real War? No, you didn't begin to do that.

The story here should make readers, sob, wail, choke, and vomit. It didn't begin to do that. It was like a telegraphed retelling of the Goldilocks tale: An ursine family says farewell to a blond child after providing a meal and a nap.

Talk about soulless, incompetent, missing-the-point journalism! The biggest story about the biggest military secrets leak in the longest war that the most powerful nation in the world has ever experienced, and you almost put me to sleep?! No wonder people listen to Beck!

I don't think there is any

I don't think there is any "blah, blah, blah" at all in these comments. I think we're right to suspect all aspects of our government. I also think I know why some people grow so passive - the truth is a nightmare and is not meant for the feint hearted! I wish the comments made for Truthout, from most of the articles I've read, could be shown to all government and military officials; as in "we the people are mad as hell and we're NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!" I truly believe that no matter what "side" anyone's on; There's enough holy hell to go around and I believe it will take a full-scale social war to get out from under the corruption found in this Country's blatant disregard of humanity! I say sing out Truthout readers, let's let the people see why we're so angry!! Let's spread the word!!

Crowbar: 9/11 was OUR

Crowbar: 9/11 was OUR bungle -- the FBI that couldn't be bothered to read and respond to the field agents' warnings about the foreign rogues seeking flight training for steering lessons only; the CIA that wouldn't stoop to communicate with the FBI and vice versa; the overgrown adolescent W and his minions who couldn't bother with prior warnings. That's the TRUTH -- not just the horror they let happen.

I think each person that is

I think each person that is outraged/ concerned over the US government's continuing crimes against humanity should make a written complaint to The International Criminal Court. Address: PO Box 19519 2500 CM, The Hague, The Netherlands.

My own letter is now being prepared.

As Americans, we are all

As Americans, we are all collectively to blame. We failed to ask the hard questions and blindly followed. We killed more innocent civilians than Saddam Hussein, the man we armed and supported for many years for his opposition to Iran.

Somebody did the actual

Somebody did the actual tortures and murders and dumped the bodies in Baghdad alleys. And the ones who committed those acts are punishing themselves with suicide. The people who ordered the crimes will never be punished until we get to the point where every American is in literal prison or loves someone in prison, loves someone who's been killed in a corporate war, or has heard his or her children crying at midnight from hunger. When that day comes, when the misery has dehumanized enough Americans, the killing of billionaires will begin. As I type this, my hands are shaking.

I've read the article, but

I've read the article, but not the previous comments. My outrage is not so much for the incredible mismanagement of the "war" after our troops invaded. I want hard answers about why we were there in the first place.

"As Americans, we are all

"As Americans, we are all collectively to blame."

Oh, medre la vache. What about hose of us who those in power never listened to, those of us who've opposed Afghanistan and Iraq from the very beginning and were, in order, told we were blame-America-first whiny liberals and then that we were traitors and terrorism apologists?

We knew this would happen. We TOLD people this would happen. Nobody paid attention. And now we're soaking in it.

I've copied the address

I've copied the address offered and I will begin work on my letter. Thank you, whoever you are, for actually doing something. We can all DO SOMETHING. I do not take responsibility for Iraq War. I voted, I sign petitions, email and write my congressman, I work in the community, I protested with signs against the war before we ever went in. But I refuse to be helpless inthe face of one catastrophe after another. How about organizing using the internet? I've decided to put my energies in one direction--education. That's our only hope. Help save public education from privatization. Educating our children, really educating them, not testing them is all we can do now.

The Pentagon and the US

The Pentagon and the US military didn't commit the individual crimes. The crimes
were committed by people with no empathy, and obviously very poor upbringing. Unfortunately, the ranks of the morally deficient seem to be growing in this country.

Not all Americans are to

Not all Americans are to blame for the Iraq mess. Many of us questioned the "intelligence" (or lack thereof) at the time. We questioned the rationale given for the invasion of a country whose dictator we set up and armed. Many of us knew that Hussein and Al Queda were not chummy co-conspirators.

The problem is few listened in those post-9/11 days. Most just wanted to (as that stupid song lyric goes" "put a boot up their ass."

It was the complacency of many, and the failure of many to look into the truth that got Bush elected and got us into the quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And that mentality has us setting up garrisons all over the world, the money for which should have been spent on our citizens and domestic issues (or at least not spent to reduce our budget deficits)... not on serving the interests of corporations snatching cheap labor and resources from other countries.

14:44 — ivan thomas "America is based on Theft and America has a Rotten core"

This is the HARD TRUTH pure and plain as daylight and I must agree with Ivan.

WikiLeaks is based on the HARD truth Documented Truth

Corporate talkng heads on the MSM try to distract with sexual side shows (so sexy) and the likes.

But WikiLeaks is showing us DOCUMENTED MURDER.

As a TAX Paying Citizen and a Concerned Citizen I am only interested in getting to the bottom of the DOCUMENTED MURDER.

Go WikiLeaks, and Phuck the US Imperial DoD and the ROTTeN CORE of America @ The Pentagon.com

Wikileaks offerings are

Wikileaks offerings are important because they substantiate the depth of the illegality of the Iraq (and Afghan) war that the Bush Administration lied us into. Subsequently, the Obama Administration contributed to the lie by: continuing the wars; refusing to investigate why we invaded Iraq; refusing to prosecute former Attorney General Ashcroft for premeditated crimes; and the reasons could go on and on.
Where the hell are the people I voted for in the last election? Are they blind? Dumb? Striving to become insiders with the international corporations that get rich with war.
Somehow Obama must be convinced that he has the support to buck the Military/Industrial/Financial Complex that is destroying our earth.

Before the Iraq invasion I

Before the Iraq invasion I wrote to the State Department, many times to George Bush, and published doezens of letters in local newspapers. The Air Force already photographed all of Iraq and knew no weapons were there of significance that could harm the U.S. All the chemical weapons we sold Hussein were dsetroyed in the Persian Gulf War. Bush planned to invade Iraq and the specific plans were on his desk at the time of the World Trade Center attack, and yet Rumsfeld lied to our invading forces that they would be 'avenging those who attacked us'. Don't tell me that all Americans are responsible for the debacle, whenGeorge Bush purposely left out theAirForce report to convince FL SenatorNelson to vote for preauthoizoatn of force. This man along with his lying underling Cheney are fully responsible for the American involvement in Iraq because of the intentional lies they spoke-- Americans who were lied to are not responsible unless they invented their own lies to promote it, and many did.

So some of the Repugnicans

So some of the Repugnicans who think they should be elected want to impeach ouro (finally, DULY) elected President Obama, but they would have fought against impeaching Dick Cheney and little Goerge who lied us into these two immoral and unfounded wars.

Obama should have immediately encouraged impeachment proceedings and called an immediate halt to all hostilities against Iraq, hostilities which have been proven to have inflamed and strengthened the cause of el Quaid.

I agree with "Before the

I agree with "Before the Iraq invasion I" and I thank the person who supplied the address of the International Criminal Court along with his suggestion that we all write to the court.

I don't know how but we must get better government or we are doomed. One thing we must do is limit time and money for political campaigns and monitor it very closely. Any politician cheating should be immediately eliminated from the race...zero tolerance!

eric @20:18 Couldn't have

eric @20:18 Couldn't have said it better myself. What a vapid article. They had the documents for TWELVE WEEKS & this was the best they could squeeze out of it? Wikileaks surely wasted their time by giving the cache to BIJ. Did they even read them? Did they make notes? Disgusting!

Good job wiki

Good job wiki leaks!!!!!!!
Thank you!!!

If things continue to go the

If things continue to go the way they have since the theft of the election in 2000 then we are doomed. We gave the Democrats the ability to do something about Bush/Cheney in 2006 and the moment they took control they told us, not in so many words, to go to hell if we were expecting justice to be done. We gave the Democrats another opportunity to once again show the world that America is not a criminal nation, by going after the Bush Crime Syndicate in 2009, yet again we were told that if we're looking for justice we'd better forget it. So what can we do? It's apparent the system is broken beyond repair and we need to start over again. And this is the difficult part, those who have gamed the system to achieve their lofty positions will fight every effort for change. Obama promised us change, while at the same time siding with status quo, and now he's imploring us to get out there and vote so that he and his cohorts can continue the slide into mediocrity, initiated and accelerated by the Repuglicons. Much as I dislike what the spineless Democrats have done with the mandate we gave them, in the short term we have to vote Democrat in order to keep those rabid lunatics who are bent on destroying this country, out of office. In the long term we need to elect people who will do what they promise, and those who cannot promise to do their best for this nation should not be elected; and by promise I don't mean hot air, we need concrete and demonstrable plans on how they would govern, given the opportunity.

The 'powers that be" are not

The 'powers that be" are not just wealthy Americans, they are the ultra-wealthy around the world who collaborate to have control over our laws. They can now buy the elections in almost any country, keep anyone from changing elections in a way where they can't control them, ensuring them all the candidates they support. Yes, it's expensive, but when you have groups with such large sums of money, they can buy a lot of corruption. They have the upper hand on every level. They have many ways to exercise their plausible deniability.

They own and control the news, the polls, the elections, the courts, the military, the prisons (which are now for profit which creates a nice little institutionalized slavery system), , and they can order the taxpayer to yield large sums of money to pay off the ultra-wealthy when they gamble away your money in the market. I call all this payoff the next batch of corruption money. Unfortunately the powers that be know things about us that allow them to control us. One is that we all have our price. We are very corruptible.

They have the ultimate power of secrecy that whenever they claim national security is involved, nobody can see what they're up to. By the time we can get the info (maybe decades later), many of the witnesses have been either killed off, threatened, or bought off and the principals in the crimes now can't remember any details. Just look at what happened to the JFK files. Anything that could be incriminating is buried in vaults and you can only demand little pieces at a time thru the FOA. It was sealed for 50 years.

That's where our truth goes. Nobody who could read and think at the time believed the report by the Warren Commission, and it was so bad the first time, they were ordered to rewrite it, and it still didn't make sense. Journalists, congressmen, and others were demanding answers to questions the commission couldn't answer. So they got the executive order to bury the story for 50 YEARS! There's our truth, hidden with obvious impunity. And they say it's for our own good as a country when it's actually keeping people who deserve tar and feathers from being culpable. What a world!

For those who are

For those who are criticizing Wiki-Leaks, please consider this. The 100,000 plus civilians killed by American and allied troops had families, friends, and neighbors, all of whom know the truth. To think that without Wiki-Leaks' release of these files, the world wouldn't know of the horrors we committed, is pure folly. At least now we can have an open debate and understand why we are more and more hated in the world.

Close. Just saw Inside Job the movie. They own (sock-puppets) and run the financial markets worldwide too. They own the universities and the professors of finance/economics worldwide.

If they own all the things you mention, and they own all the instruments of wealth, then Virginia, the people are owned too. Check-mate.

and we lock drug dealers and

and we lock drug dealers and users up. while the true criminals and their hie-rings run over the top of those who are not a part of the criminality of the nation get wasted by the banksers and corp.. thieves. What this nation and several others I can think of need to face the International Criminal court where the leadership of these nations is brought to trial and international discipline applied and they are striped of special powers and appointments so ALL the world can see that they are not above decent norms of behaviour.

let the bloody empire crash

let the bloody empire crash and burn... as all empires have collapsed and imploded into the bloated bowels of their insatiable greed and gluttony throughout history. then, long after we progenitors die, those who follow will struggle to rebuild, and the greed, gluttony and empire-building will be begin anew, in some other wretched corner of the planet. this blood-drenched cycle will relentlessly, unerringly repeat itself until Homo sapien sapien [yes, we are a sub-species of H.s.] finally exsanguinates... bleeds itself out so catastrophically that the human strain will never stain this planet again.
