Democrats Come Alive!
(Image: Lance Page / t r u t h o u t; Adapted: Andrew Bulhak / Flickr)

Friends,

Ok! We're halfway through the week and we're off to a great start. Last week I gave the spineless Dems five friendly suggestions for things they could do on the off chance they were interested in winning the midterm elections on November 2nd:

1. Deliver a blunt, nonstop reminder to the American people about exactly who it was that got us into the mess we're in.

2. Declare a moratorium on home foreclosures.

3. Prosecute the banks and Wall Street for the Crime of the Century.

4. Create a 21st century WPA (hire the unemployed to rebuild America).

5. Pledge that no Dem will take a dime from Wall Street in the next election cycle.

So how are we doing 5 days later? Not bad! It turns out that at least some of these ideas were so simple even elected Democrats could come up with them!

1. Dems have started running tough, killer ads that have balls and SAY WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID. Check these out:

In the California Senate race, Barbara Boxer is going after Carly Fiorina on the outsourcing Fiorina did as CEO of HP.

Rep. Tim Bishop of Long Island, New York hits his GOP opponent Randy Altschuler on how HIS business sent jobs overseas.

Richard Blumenthal half-nelsons his Connecticut Senate opponent (and former WWE CEO) Linda McMahon who said we should consider cutting the minimum wage and then lied about having said it.

Jeez, it's like they wanna win! More of these, please -- NOW!

2. Foreclosure Moratorium fever among the Dems has amazingly swept the nation in the last week!

Democratic Attorneys General all over the country are now demanding moratoriums for their states: California (Jerry Brown, now running for Governor), Connecticut (Richard Blumenthal, now running for Senate), Delaware (Joe Biden's son Beau), Massachusetts (Martha Coakley, who probably wished she'd done this earlier since she lost the special Senate race in January to Scott Brown), Illinois (Lisa Madigan), Texas (Greg Abbott -- a Republican!) and Colorado (John Suthers -- another Republican!). And so is Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (at the urging of Rep. Elijah Cummings, who you may remember from 'Capitalism: A Love Story').

Meanwhile, the Attorneys General of Iowa, Ohio and North Carolina are opening probes into the mortgage industry. And the banks are feeling the heat -- GMAC, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America have already suspended foreclosures in 23 states (with Detroit's Rep. John Conyers, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, calling on them to extend it to Michigan and the rest of the U.S.).

Wells Fargo? Citibank? Are you paying attention? Now's the time to do something good so you can later mention it to the sentencing judge.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona has called for a nationwide foreclosure moratorium, and Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey says that may be necessary.

And it goes on and on. Check the special section on my website that I'm updating every day as more and more Democratic officials announce they will no longer allow banks to kick families out of their homes.

3. Prosecute the bastards! Looks like that's what they're maybe finally going to do. Check out this stunning letter sent to Attorney General Holder yesterday by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and 30 other members of congress (PDF):

"...we urge you and your respective agencies to investigate possible violations of law or regulations by financial institutions in their handling of delinquent mortgages, mortgage modifications, and foreclosures. ... The excuses we have heard from financial institutions are simply not credible three years into this crisis. ... It is time that banks are held accountable for their practices that have left too many homeowners without real help."

According to the New York Times, banks will likely face a "wide range of government investigations" for years. Judges may ask for them to be indicted for perjury or obstruction of justice. The Justice Department could prosecute banks for mail and wire fraud, or for making false statements to the government. And the SEC could open civil investigations.

Now we need to hear the Justice Department announce their investigation.

And look -- Larry Summers is gone. Great move! The people's advocate, Elizabeth Warren, is in -- genius move! If that's the direction Obama is now heading in, then these bankers may be shaking in their Salvatore Ferragamos.

So, not a bad start, Democrats (20 months late)! Just four weeks to go and I'm feeling that maybe, just maybe, we may prevent the All Souls Day Massacre. The pundits, who are essentially tools for the Corporate States of America, may have to eat a lot of crow. And if the Dems escape death's door, they had better not let this nonsense happen again.

So, President Obama and Congress, let's get busy on ideas #4 (WPA jobs) and #5 (pledge to take no further campaign money from Goldman and their friends).

C'mon everybody -- there's at least 3 million of you reading this (including the 700,000 of you who are my Twitter followers and my 300,000+ close Facebook friends). Let's pressure the Dems to quit cowering and kick some butt -- NOW!

Tell them it's easy and to repeat after us:

* Stop the foreclosures!

* Prosecute the banks and Wall Street and war profiteer corps!

* Remind the public 24/7 who created the mess!

* Announce a real jobs program!

* Promise not to take Wall Street's dirty money!

* Win the election!

Simple!

Do it!

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. On a different subject... One of the most moving, hopeful and powerful documentaries I've seen this year (or any year) opens at the Quad in NYC on Friday. It's called, "Budrus," and it's about a town by that name in the West Bank. The Palestinians in that town (and many of their Israeli neighbors on the other side of the Wall that's being constructed) come up with a way to totally undo the Israeli Defense Forces: pledge to defeat the occupiers by never firing a bullet, never throwing a stone, never causing any harm to their Jewish brothers and sisters. Whoa! What happens next is so effed up, so incredible, you have to see this movie to believe it. The film is brilliant. It won the top Founders Prize for nonfiction film at my film festival this summer. It will soon be coming to other cities. Do not miss it!!!

Moore DEM TALK! Fooled

Moore DEM TALK! Fooled AGAIN!! FOOL!!!

Hey, Vic....take a poetry

Hey, Vic....take a poetry class and some Xanax. Dems, schmems, you work with what you've got right now. There has never been a magic party bullet in this country. If you can't weigh in with something constructive you're just taking up space.

I like Mike . . . and was

I like Mike . . . and was even on the Democratic Executive Council in my county for years; but in my mind it's "way too little, way too late." I'm not the forgiving sort when it comes to the bastards that have screwed up my country so completely.

And besides, I have zero reason to believe either Democrats or Republicans. They've both proved beyond any doubt that they are Fascists supporting their Corporate masters.

I'll vote for somebody with the good taste to not put either a "D" or an "R" after their name, and if there isn't anyone in that category I'll write in "None of the Above."

Let's get real here people.

Let's get real here people. There's a BIG difference between the Democrats and the Republicans and it's been reviewed many times. Even granting that the present Congress came up short in many ways, think of where we'd be with Speaker Boehner in charge. If you really want to avoid a further Republican disaster, you need to vote, and vote Democratic.

Remember, every vote withheld or every vote for a third party is a vote for the Republicans. Just remember Nader. If the Tea Party takes charge, you'll have no excuse for complaining.

I'm with Michael Moore 100%.

I'm with Michael Moore 100%. Demand action and hold lawmakers' feet to the fire! But I have to tell you, cynical as I am about the political system, I believe what Obama has done since he swore the oath is nothing short of a miracle. Sure, he could have been more progressive but, no matter how hard you wish, you can't turn an oil tanker around on a dime. You have to work WITH the system. I believe Obama is a GENIUS! He knows how to get things done. And Pelosi and Reid have been fantastic partners in the scheme to regain the moral high ground that is required in a democratic country. That's why they're all getting lambasted by the right! It's not because they're all inept... it's because they have foiled the Party of No time and time again! Obama's genius is all about TIMING. He doesn't show his hand until the time is right. That's what frustrates the progressives. But he knows that the short-term memory of the electorate and the 24 hour news cycle can undo good works if they are done too soon. So, patience, my brothers and sisters! Obama has another 6 years to turn this country into a country we can all be proud of. A country where ordinary people have a shot at a good life - not just the prospect of living and dying as "working poor" and not just slaves to the corporate state!

All talk, like during the

All talk, like during the 2008 election. Watch them reverse themselves as soon as the election is over and throw you to the wolfs again

Michael Moore is correct.

Michael Moore is correct. This nation was too Patient and Trusting, and allowed Bush to take us to a senseless war..not once but twice.. over Lies. We stood back and watched this country go downhill in every way and did nothing to stop the free fall. Bush, Cheney and his cabal took this country to the very brink of a collapse even worse than the Great Depression, turning us into a Debtor Nation in the span of that Eight Horrible Years.

Yet, people are willing to throw President Obama to the wolves purely because he has not cleaned up that Mess..the Mess that the Republicans made in Eight Years..in less than a Two Year span. What is wrong with you folks ? Are your memories all that short ? The only salvation we have is to get behind our President..the one that we elected, fair and square..unlike the preceding one.

Give him the Majority of Democrats in the House and the Senate, so he won't have to go into battle with his hands tied by a NO No No Republican Senate that knows that if Obama were allowed to do what he wants to do, they would not have a snowballs chance in Hell of taking back this government..not after the Mess they did to it over the past Bush Administrations..including adding to what the Bush Elder started and was not able to finish...thanks to President Clinton.

Have you really forgotten what harm the Bush Presidency brought us ? You know that the Republicans do not have the best interests of the average people at heart..they are a Party that has always been the Elites Best Friend. So stand behind this Democrat President and support him all the way. What have you got to lose ? You have the ability to save this nation from being lost forever. What do you want...a Fascist government... or a Democratic country that is of the people, by the people and for the people ? Vote Democrat all the way. Give Obama the Help he needs. He cannot do it alone !

Yes and also deliver a blunt

Yes and also deliver a blunt force reminder to the American people about how much Dear Leader has done to get us out of the mess we're in. NOTHING.

You poor, poor ignorant

You poor, poor ignorant fools. Obama isn't cleaning up Junior's mess and he's not going to. The only thing Obama is trying to do is finish the job that Junior started for him. If Obama is allowed to continue we may very well not see a 45th president. He's not interested in freedom in the least. His "change" is socialism and we will not permit him to finish it. The Cuban people did not see Fidel Castro for what he was until it was too late, and they were astonished to discover that he is a communist. Do not make the same mistake with Obama. If socialism and worse is really what you want to see come to this country and roost for good then God help you.

06:42, Have you a better

06:42,
Have you a better solution...if so, out with it. We either get behind this President and help him or we all can continue to suffer the consequences of what the previous Dear Leader has dumped in his lap. You ain't seen nuttin' yet when compared with what is waiting for this nation if you merely persist in calling names and throwing dirt on what he is trying to do. What do you expect him to have accomplished in the span of less than two years...after the total mess that the previous Dear Leader 'accomplished' in his Eight year reign ? You are only seeing what you want to see, as it was Cheney pulling the strings while Bush play-acted like he was President. There is nothing 'back there' to go back to !
President Obama is now having to contend with what Eisenhower warned about...the Military-Industrial Complex. He was warning us that if we were not vigilant we were headed toward being a Fascist nation, or worse. He was so right. Is that what we want...to be Ruled like a Third World country by a dictator in all but name only ? If so, denigrate this President and Vote Republican and that is exactly what you will get. Then, Serfdom USA, is what we will become.
The use of the word 'Socialism' is really just another Scare word..as the use of 'Liberalism' as a scare tactic has been overused. I would much prefer Socialism over Totalitarianism. This Total War against ' terrrror ' was supposed to get us there, don't you see. Wake up, people, before it is too late to change.

Gee, it's so wonderful to

Gee, it's so wonderful to see the DemocRATS getting tough on those nasty banksters, but it's just a bit of window dressing for the masses. You want to know how different Obomba is from Bulsh, why don't you ask the Iraqis or the Afghans? For them, the increased drone attacks and the construction of huge permanent war bases don't appear to be the change they would like to believe in. Mr. Moore does not even mention the murderous wars of occupation that the Obomba "adminstration" continues to escalate; it's as if they do not exist! The real rulers of this country, the shadow government, will continue to pull the strings of the puppet in oval office, be it a RepubliCON or a DemocRAT.

Why not Name the Shadow

Why not Name the Shadow Government ? You obviously know who they are. As for as Mr. Moore not mentioning the Wars, I think it was because Everyone knows about them, surely, after the last Ten Years. Why repeat the Obvious ! It would be a waste of time, and an insult to do so after all these years. After all, Bush and his Cabal started those Wars a Decade ago..and they were in the Works for longer than that. So why the inane effort to blame President Obama for 'escalating' them .

You do not appear to be aware that the Military-Industrial Complex has more power than our President at this time. It is They who are all for prolonging the wars and even expanding them to other countries. Congress seems to have grown deaf ears or hadn't you noticed ?

Get behind this President and let him know that you will back him up in bringing these wars to an end. You have no idea what Forces he has to contend with. If you are not willing to help him, get out of his way with all of your denigrating words of put-down.
That is not the way to help him accomplish all that he must do. How much better do you think you would be able to do, my friends, with so many snapping at your heels like mad dogs ?

I consider your films

I consider your films passionate and guided by an appropriate moral compass, but lacking a well informed philosophy of power systems. This perception is strengthened by the “Dems Come Alive” email below, wherein you recommend superficial changes at best, in combination with serving up marketing propaganda for state-corporate greed on a silver platter and actual harm to our nation as follows:

* Stop the foreclosures!  While this may provide temporary relief to some homeowners, it can serve to increase corporate power and profits in the future and is a great marketing tool, so limited reductions are likely if Dems agree secretly to pass beneficial laws for financial firms in exchange for some Dem protection in the mid-terms.  This is exactly what I would advise former my former financial firm clients to support as an exec consultant.  The notion that JPM execs are “feeling the heat” appears dangerously disconnected from critical success factors in reforming the economy, placing the goal of reform at substantial risk.

* Prosecute the banks and Wall Street and war profiteer corps! – This is not feasible given the judicial status of corporations in the U.S., funding realities of the corporate political party, and I think you suspect or know this.  In addition, if the Obama administration is not only not going to prosecute, but is actually going to protect perps of mass genocide, torture, kidnapping, and other international crimes and continue to commit them themselves, there appears no justification for the belief less serious crimes involving financial rape of the country could be motivated by the same organizations and administrations who have prospered so well by committing them.  If a plausible scenario exists which could make the
prosecution recommendation plausible, I’ve never encountered it, and I would challenge you to cite one, or provide any justification this recommendation is reasonable or productive.

* Remind the public 24/7 who created the mess!  Your email is a bit vague on “who” these creators are, but the fact that anyone in the situation of corporate and regulatory decision makers would likely reach the same rational solutions remains unacknowledged in your piece, and thus amounts to advocating another ineffective, and at this stage ineffective quick fix.  Your recommendation plays an easy blame game which ignores complex structural causes that help explain why the mess occurred: as a result of systemic causes.  Focusing on who, diverts attention from productive solutions that require understanding the structures that caused it, not the players who act rationally within that structure.  The temporary conditions to which these enduring structures like state capitalist corporations, react seem important to consider secondarily for understanding this particular crisis sufficiently before we can develop good recommendations, don’t you agree?
* Announce a real jobs program!  Generally a good idea, but such a program would of necessity have to be acceptable to business by including low wages, subsidized work (in miserable jobs, not building green energy for example) that can be used to drive down worker wages generally and increase insecurity.  It is not realistic to expect this administration to
commit political suicide over principles no one will understand as corporate interests largely control what people know.

* Promise not to take Wall Street's dirty money!  This will almost certainly be implemented since promises are what politicians specialize in, and they cost nothing (and typically deliver the same).  Such promises appear unlikely in the extreme to be of any value other than political marketing.
* Win the election! Obviously this is a top priority for any candidate, but a more militant approach than encouraging electoral wins appears the only historical means for average citizens to win concessions from elite power – although counter-examples are theoretically possible.  Recent history suggests that deceptively obtained support from constituents will overwhelmingly be the norm, because it is so much more efficient.

We must ensure that optimizing efficiency only occurs within the bounds of sustainability, non-violence, justice, and cooperation.  My assessment (and that of others) is that this is not achievable prior to the next collapse, during which survival will become the main priority for large percentages of the population.  A dedicated national effort similar in scope to the
Apollo Program, starting with a Constitutional Amendment governing and prohibiting illegitimate “rights” awarded Corporations appears the only plausible option from within “the system” to avoid catastrophic failure within the next decade, IMO.  Revolutions are horrific affairs, and we must do as much as possible to avoid the atrocities they unleash.

My apologies for any errors…and appreciation for your consideration of the analysis.

To Doc M This is bullshit

To Doc M

This is bullshit meant only as intimidation. I am responsible for MY VOTE and my vote alone. If I don't vote for Republicans, I don't vote for Republicans. This is exactly the thinking that has gotten us a Democratic party that voted for gutting the social security net [clinton] passed and implimented NAFTA [Clinton] A Democratic president who signed the repeal of Glass-Steagal, a Democratic Congress who refused to pursue impeachment of a President who ADMITTED to wiretapping US citizens without a warrant and who IGNORED SUPREME COURT RULINGS it didn't like. It's gotten us health care deform that reinforces the power of private insurance companies and leaves insurance for those who can't afford it to the whims of a deficit obsessed Congress. So please, instead of just claiming it, tell me exactly what is the difference between the parties? I say it's a difference of measure, not of kind. The Dems with f**k you up the butt and use lube. The Repubs with just f**k you. BFD. We're screwed either way.

OMG, I just watched the

OMG, I just watched the trailer for "Budrus", it was beautiful and very moving, it had me in tears and I still have goosebumps. What brave people.

All you complainers

All you complainers screaming about how the dems aren't doing enough fast enough, get off you bums and help, get out the vote and the word. Every vote not going to the dems is going to the teapubs and that is bad for everyone. Yeesh.

A political party that can't

A political party that can't get anything done while holding the White House along with both houses of Congress is either incompetent, or isn't trying.

Considering the successes of Republicans, both in their time as the majority party during the Cheney regime as well as in their time now as the minority party, it isn't clear to me that the Democrats are really trying to achieve the goals they say they are trying to achieve.

"They're not as bad as the Republicans", even if true, is not good enough to get my vote. If that is good enough reason to get Democrats a majority of votes, then "not as bad as the Republicans" is all this country is likely to get from their elected officials.

Democrats either need the votes of the more progressive voters among us, or they don't. If they want those votes, then they must pay more attention to, and pay attention to more progressive interests. They don't own those votes. They don't get them for free. They've got to work for them, just like the Republicans, or anyone else must do to get votes.

To Behopi I'll say it

To Behopi
I'll say it again.I am responsible for my vote and my vote alone. My decision that the Democratic Party has not earned my support is by no leap of the imagination or logic support for the Republicans.

And as far as being mad at the Party for not doing enough fast enough, that is a straw man argument. No one I know is mad for that. We are mad for what the Party HAS done, for the cynical manipulation of the rhetoric of the common person while actively supporting government of, by and for the haves and have mores.

(I am mad because my party's leaders expect me to be stupid enough to accept half measures and moon walk stuff that actually makes my situation worse while pretending to make it better. I am mad because I am tired of fighting for the re-election of people who are not willing to fight for me. I mean come the BLEEP on. Not taking the tax bill to the floor before the election- a measure that 7O% of the population supports- is a move of such stupendous fecklessness [and electoral stupidity] that it takes my breath away. Again, I'm not mad about what Democratic leaders HAVEN'T done. I'm pissed about what they HAVE done.

While Behopi and Doc M don't sign their names, I do. And for the sake of full disclosure, I have never had a paid position with the Democratic Party. I quit as chair of the Person County [NC] Democratic Party last spring because I could not stomach campaigning for the worthless bunch that I was being called on to work for. I AM THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY BASE.

Jim Senter, I am part of the

Jim Senter, I am part of the democratic base too, and I am responsible for only my vote too. I still say vote like your life depends on it because it does. Every non vote or protest vote or whatever, is a vote for the teapubs. I do not want that, do you? So fer gawds sake vote. AND take another dem with you to the polls. VOTE!

Behopi, I agree with you.

Behopi, I agree with you.
A non-vote is a vote for the NO! No! No! Republicans. Those folk are of the opinion that if they can stop Obama from doing anything that the people really want done, it will kill any chance of them regaining power again. They are Right. That is all they want..to regain the power. They could care less for any of us 'little people.' They have already proven whose side they are on.
So vote for the Democrats wherever you find them, not because they are The Greatest, but simply because that is the best we have at present ! And at the same time, do Not vote for any of the hanger-on Old Timers that are just there in the House and Senate for their Ego's sake. Vote in New Blood. Just make sure that they are Democrats. At least give this President a Fighting chance for this Next two years. Then.. if he fails us..vote Him Out in 2012. But do give him all the tools he must have to do the job for the next two years. WE owe our country that much. We already know what the Republicans are capable of. More of what we have been dumped in that Obama is trying to get us out of. More s--- ! Help Obama. Quit cutting him down.

I have my voter's packet in

I have my voter's packet in the mail, and I have to say, "a non-vote is a vote for the Republicans"??

Are you kidding me? There are Republicans running unopposed, Democrats who opposed opening up Medicare and supported billions more for Afghanistan. Then there's a big ad about how I should vote if I'm a woman because this is a centennial celebration of suffrage.

Oh really? So who do I cast my vote for as a woman and a mother? For the Democrat who would send my kid to Afghanistan to die for oil? Or for the Republican who knows the health care plan is total shit, but would deny my child health care if they had a pre-existing condition, because doing so is the *glory* of Randianesque freedom from corporate regulation?

Please don't lecture this mom on how I'M responsible if the tea party moves in. Taking your fucking Democratic Party lecture and shove it where the sun in your brain never shines.

There's a Republican in one

There's a Republican in one of our elections who's opposing the privatization of social security. While the Democrat, I think, supports it.

Check that one out. Yes, I need my social security, so don't tell to vote for a Democrat just because you believe in marching orders.

Maybe you have some nice retirement funds too.

What I hate about Democratic Party propaganda is that it's so anti-thinking, pro-authority.

Interesting that the High

Interesting that the High Poopah Democrats were so alarmed by Al Greene running for election (My God What Right Does An Unemployed Man Have to 10,000 Dollars???) while they don't even care about Republicans running unopposed in elections across the country.

Why is the Democratic Party

Why is the Democratic Party supporting the reduction of the Food Program by pitting it against the expansion of the Lunch Program? With the support of First Lady Michele Obama?

When is Michele Obama going to act more like Eleanor Roosevelt instead of a fashion statement made to order by others?

Democratic Party politics in

Democratic Party politics in America. Swing to the left to get elected. For example, tell America, if they want to get out of Iraq, to vote the Democrats into Congress.

Americans go out and vote a Democratic Congress in.

Congress passes more money for more war. But. The presidential elections are coming:

"Hey America, we can really do it, but you'll have to give us a Democratic President, too."

Hillary Clinton sees an opportunity.

Enter Barack Obama, who sees a bigger one.

Americans tear each other's throats apart over whether it will the first woman or the first African American. The women's movement becomes more divided than ever; enter the far right, via Sarah Palin, invited by kindly old man, John McCain.

EDGEOFNOWHERE, it's obvious

EDGEOFNOWHERE, it's obvious you've never seen a Moore film; you need to. "Fahrenheit 911" comes readily to mind (and try to find his Oscar speech for "Bowling for Columbine" on Pacifica - or at least pick up a copy of his book, "Stupid White Men", so you'll know more about Moore and where he comes from.
