Afghanistan War, Nightmare without End for Troops, Innocent Civilians and US Taxpayers

Washington D.C. (November 23, 2010) - Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich, a leading proponent of peace, today renewed his call to end the Afghan war after it was revealed that a self-proclaimed senior Taliban negotiator working with President Hamid Karzai and NATO officials was in an imposter.

“The war in Afghanistan is taking place in a netherworld where facts and common sense have no place. Elections are fake. Our deadline to withdraw is a fake. Now, we learn that a fake Taliban leader has been leading us to believe that NATO was facilitating high-level talks between Taliban leadership and the corrupt Afghan central government we’re propping up. It was truly amazing that our government said we were negotiating with high-level Taliban leadership while at the same time we were stepping up air strikes to wipe them out.

“Evidence abounds that the Karzai regime in Kabul is among the most corrupt in the world. President Karzai rules through crony capitalism. He works to protect his cronies rather than the Afghan people. Our tax dollars are going to the Karzai family and its supporters to buy villas in Dubai. We know that our tax dollars fund both sides of the conflict. We know that our ‘allies’ pay the enemy not to attack our troops and that they also may be bribing insurgents to attack our troops. We also know that U.S. tax dollars fund Afghan warlords. NATO officials have become so skilled in self-deception that a senior NATO official recently claimed that Kabul is safer for children than most western cities. Meanwhile those who continue to advocate for the war apply the dark arts of public relations to manufacture support for a war which is neither winnable, nor moral nor sane. It is time for Congress to start asking General Petraeus some direct questions.

“The War in Afghanistan is longer than any other war America has ever fought. It has cost U.S. taxpayers more than a trillion dollars. More than 1300 Americans have died, thousands more wounded. Countless innocent Afghan civilians have died. “The only real thing about this war is the dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, the wasted tax dollars and the mounting evidence telling us to get out.”

I'm pro-Kcinich generally,

I'm pro-Kcinich generally, but "longer than any other [American] war"?

The Vietnam war ran officially from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975--nearly 20 years.

It's reasonable to view the Second World War as a continuation of the First.

The point being that this long and futile conflict is hardly without precedent.

The important thing is that, like the Vietnam conflict, and in sharp contrast to WWII and preceding conflicts, the Afghan war has no serious objective of augmenting the U.S. empire.

Rather, its primary purpose is to defend the domestic political ascendancy of our thoroughly inernationalized and unpatriotic ruling class.

I would have voted for

I would have voted for Dennis Kucinich for President. I'm sorry we were not allowed the opportunity. He is one of the few moral voices left in American politics. God bless you Mr. Kucinich and Happy(turkey- free ;) Thanksgiving.

But as he "angles" to "stop"

But as he "angles" to "stop" the Obamanible Bush Wars, just like with DEM Health DEFORM; at the last moment; Kucinich will CAVE like Osama!

Excellent. Thank you,

Excellent. Thank you, Dennis. Now why is this fucking President not rallying around this progressive call for real and immediate change? Answer: Because our President is a right wing, neoliberal asshole that believes in the use of war for imperialistic economic expansion. Go back and read Obama's comments to the Nobel Committee on Iraq being a success story against which future wars will be measured. The well spoken Asshole from Harvard was talking about Afghanistan.

Karzai rules through "crony

Karzai rules through "crony capitalism"? Sounds a lot like Bush/Cheney. So what's yer point?

The Bush/Cheney/Rove

The Bush/Cheney/Rove triumvirate succeeded in bankrupting the U.S.A. The Obama/Geithner/Bernanke trio is continuing the process to the ultimate total destruction of of the government and the geographical landscape of the North American continent, unless Mother Nature wins the contest.

graph 1 was in an

graph 1

was in an imposter?

huh???

We're in Afghanistan for the

We're in Afghanistan for the gas routes. We got tons of bases there and Karzai is our front man. We'll leave when we stop worrying about gas and oil. Neither Obama or Kucinich is gonna get us out of there. Maybe, finally, the Pushtuns will push us out. The US runs the world (rather badly) and our burden is to bring the world's riches to our wall street masters.

Well, we are there to

Well, we are there to protect the oil and the pipeline thru Afghan.
Hamid Karzai is an oil exc and was appointed by Bush/Cheney, and he knows nothing about running a country, he was put there to make sure the pipeline gets completed for Big oil Cartel, and to make sure China don't get their road pushed through and so they can build their own pipeline, so they can grab some of that oil that everyone wants.
Everything in that area is to exploit the oil resources and keep China from getting it,and our troops are dying and being mutilated for that, and no other reason.

That is why we can't leave that section of the world, as the minute we leave, China will push their road through and get their own pipeline laid to get their share of the vast oil in all those Stan countries.

We should have started Re-newable energy a long time ago so we wouldn't have to make war to protect Exxon/Mobile, while they suck the resources from that area, and suck the money and lives from the American people. It is all for Profits regardless of the costs of lives and Taxpayer $$.
I agree with Denis, we should leave and let China have it.
We then spend the money we save to rebuild our infrastructure and put Solar panels and Wind machines up to furnish the electricity we need.

Growing Hemp and using it for an alternative fuel is a lot cleaner and cheaper.

The Vietnam WAR was never

The Vietnam WAR was never declared so it was never a war and it didnt officially start till in the 60s...your thinking about the advisers we had there under the French and not as soldiers.
The first and second WW are not connected as they were fought over different things for different reasons...
this thing you call a conflict is different in that it has NO reason to exist...there were never more than 3500 enemy and they are less than 100 now...the Taliban are our creation that we trained both in this country and by the CIA over there. We still dont tell the public about the real reason we are there.
When the Taliban withdrew their contract with Unical is the moment in time we decided we had to invade that country...nothing else even came into the conversation in that regard.

The current meltdown

The current meltdown depression started during Reaguns term and has been allowed to run due to the FEDs separation from the branches of the Government.
No president controls the FED and none will. They are at the mercy of the Rothschild and Rockefeller families and will always be...they own this country and the lesser Billionaires are just small time flies in the ointment comared to the FEDs work to control the economies of the world through the worlds Central Banks.

Dennis Kucinich...you speak

Dennis Kucinich...you speak such fundamental truth. What is it about truth that is so repellent to the American people? Landslide Republican victory in Arizona, my current home. Strike three for truth tellers. The desert beckons, but it's mostly right wing thought that defines our existence in this sun soaked, brain baked, realm of small minds and intolerant politics. I had such faith in Obama. Mostly change he pretended to believe in. So long fellow bipeds.
RAW

The Vietnam "war" did not

The Vietnam "war" did not run from 1955 to 1975. Yes our involvement in Vietnam started 1955 with advisors. We did not begin active combat mission in Vietnam until well after that. The other side of this is the Vietnam war was never declared a war. While the US did declare war on Afganistan.

You attempt to say the WWII was just an extension of WWI sshows your ignorance of the first and second world wars. Just because the were both in europe does not mean they were the same war. Get it right please.

Tell it LIKE IT IS,

Tell it LIKE IT IS, Dennis!

I'd add we have crony capitalism here almost, if not as corrupt. The corporate plutocracy getting verv rich on war contracts.

When??? When will people

When??? When will people realize that these are ALL FOR A LOT OF PROFIT WARS??? When are people going to see the truth with their own logic? Or have people completely lost the ability to think logically? Obama, Bush, Clinton, so on... are following their leaders. Sell war at ANY cost. It has always been about money. Go back and revisit Eisenhauer's advise to Kennedy. Over and over and over and people seem to just refuse to understand it. Congress, The Supreme, The White House, they are ALL serving the Big War Machine. The entire Media is in their hands. It is just too much money and we all know power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. They HAVE absolote power now. We will not be at the table with them, EVER! They don't care about "We, The People". We the People is We, the Corporations! They laugh about us! They laugh at us! What will it take for all to WAKE UP???

Dennis should have been

Dennis should have been president, but corporations wouldn't allow it, so we got Obama... who has basically sold us all out to corporations. I don't really see any way out of it now. I think democracy is history in the U.S. We are now owned by corporations. Or, as Tennessee Ernie Ford said it so many years ago, "Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store."

Starting the clock on

Starting the clock on America's war in Afghanistan is quixotic. Does it start during the counter-insurgency phase of the anti-Soviet campaign when we were funding the terrorist-freedom fighters? Or October of 2001. Or did it rally start with Gulf War I? I would say that it is the US longest conflict by a mile. We have been at war in the Middle East since the sixties manoeuvring to get a one-up on the people who live there and our hook into their natural resources.

Right-on comment!!.

btw-The Huffington Post mods are not letting many of my comments critical of Obama through much any more. The ones where I bash Republicans are sailing through.

Update - HuffPost just did

Update - HuffPost just did let one of my comments through criticizing Obama for continuing Cheney/Bush policies - the war and the abrogation of civil and human rights (and the dangerous expansion of Executive power), so I had to correct my last comment.

Dennis K. is a sane voice.

Dennis K. is a sane voice. But loud voices (or noises) that tell lies many times cause the drumbeat that drowns the sane voices and dopes the common masses who have no time to do research and find the truth.

The sane voices--like Dennis

The sane voices--like Dennis K's and others--need to get louder than the voices of the liars. People need to be encouraged to do the research to determine the truth. And to understand that that is in their own best interests.

The Fakery Started on

The Fakery Started on September 11, 2001, when the THREE skyscrapers (including World Trade Center 7) were demolished before our eyes and then a transparently FAKE story about a FAKE organization was provided to fool the American people into supporting and pursuing an ultimately futile and self-defeating program of military aggression against Muslims. Without the Soviet Union to kick around anymore, the military and arms manufacturers needed a new "threat" to American hegemony and so supplied one in the form of hostile Muslims. Until 9/11 is thoroughly investigated by a disinterested (NOT bi-partisan) commission, the United States will be doomed to spend trillions of dollars and countless lives chasing phantom enemies to the enrichment of the already wealthy and powerful.

Has anyone stopped to

Has anyone stopped to consider that if an impostor can pass face-to-face muster, then of what value is any of the so-called "intelligence" that the Pentagon claims as "proof" of the target identification we send "night raids" and unmanned drones after. How can they deny civilian casualties where there is no up close and personal verification, while on the one hand shrug off such abysmal identification failure when they are in the room?

Blatant immorality. Blatant corruption.

The Amerikan Sheeple couldn't be more insulted if THEY came knocking door-to-door just to tell US to our faces what fools we are...

The Constitution and Democracy has been given over to Corporate Fascism, and each time we listen to THEM expound their self-righteousness, we are mocked in our naive belief that our flag and our nation still stand for what our forefathers envisioned and then created.

It is only a lie now, except for those few who have the power and the wealth of privilege.

Obama is an impostor,a faux

Obama is an impostor,a faux populist,a chameleon. He started flipping before the election, why I voted Nader.I can't stomach Obama when he speaks anymore, just like bush,I must mute the audio, change channels.

When? when is the question. The plutocracy throws bones, but wages haven't risen since the 70's,our standard of living is lowering, people can't own homes.Unemployment means higher profits for the corporations.Obama,Congress are on board with outsourcing US jobs. Our justice system, and government agencies are badly broken. The FED was in on the financial melt down, now pumps billions more into the derivative parasites, who drives prices up on our necessities. Our Supreme Court is a corporate strong hold. This nation serves the top 2% screw the rest.America is going down.

thank you everyone for great

thank you everyone for great thoughts, ideas, facts, explication, proposals. The charade is now exposed. What will they think of next?

Its interesting to read once

Its interesting to read once again that Afghanistan has secret oil reserves and a strategic pipeline that the US covets.

Afghanistan is utterly bereft of natural resources of any value to the west, you fools. Indeed, it is the only large inhabited country in the world without a RAILROAD across its terrain. I've been there. If you try to cross
from Iran to Pakistan you have to fly or take
a bus or hitch-hike. Not recommended, BTW

Once and for all: no oil, no oil pipeline, no precious metals or rare earths. Nothing. zip.
Except angry ragheads.
Stop the lies please.

Afghanistan, where empires

Afghanistan, where empires go to die...

Connard “I cannot think of

Connard

“I cannot think of a time when we have had a region emerge as suddenly
to become as strategically significant as the Caspian. But the oil and
gas there is worthless until it is moved. The only route which makes
both political and economic sense is through Afghanistan.”

...--- Dick Cheney, Chief Executive of Halliburton (1998)

Totally agree with Kucinich

Totally agree with Kucinich and with virtually all of the commenters, especially those who mentioned the Rothschild/Rockefeller cabal, the unexamined 9/11 attacks which reek of collusion with our government, and the fact that we are living in a fascist nation. No doubt.
Interested readers should check out the Bilderberg organization for its power over our policies. I'd be more specific, but gotta go stuff the turkey.
Finally, just sorry that one commenter regrets his contribution to K's initial campaign---I only wish I had contributed.

My memory of DK is of about

My memory of DK is of about five years old, when, during a State of the Union address, he snuck up behind Bush, whispered in his ear, then shared a big hug. I say he is the "token" liberal, the one they allow to skirt certain issues, because they know he is the wrong messenger and no one takes him seriously. It's a shame that Truth Out is bothering to run anything he says, he is a shill.

I just read an article about

I just read an article about JKF (The National Security State and the Assassination of JFK) and how he tried to withdraw troops from Vietnam and deescalate the situation. He was assassinated shortly afterward. I feel compassion for Obama because I don't believe he is in favor of war, but he is in an impossible situation in which he or his family members could be in danger if he takes action too quickly against the military-industrial-intelligence-media complex. Dennis is a good guy, and tries to be a truth teller. He also is in an impossible situation. The Congress and the President are not running the country. We (the People) have a formidable enemy, and it's not outside our borders.

Again with the strategic

Again with the strategic importance of Afghanistan! Cheney and Halliburton will tell
any lies to rationalize their occupation of the Middle East and near South Asia, but can't invent a pipeline or a rationale for sending Caspian sea oil southeast across Afghanistan to.. to where? Pakistan? China? India? Why?
The Baku-Ceyhan pipeline was/is the west's answer to the Soviet lock on Caspian resources. Look at a map- then check out the facts about oil and gas exports. The idea of building a pipeline across an ungovernable failed state?

If we calculate the true

If we calculate the true cost of the Iraq/Afghanistan adventures of the DICK/Bush making (what were they smoking, snorting, drinking?) no one, including the puppets of the military hardware sales, the republicans would be able to support is publicly. Add all the cost of VA hospitals, the compensation to deed and wounded soldiers/families, the bad image of the US ELITE (hated by almost all the rational people in the world), the violence, crime associated with the returned "healthy" vets., and the subsequent generations of maladjusted offspring of these vets., it amounts to $trillions each year. If you add the cost of the destruction of ancient civilizations and humans/property in the invaded countries, we cannot calculate the costs. What a tragedy for humanity imposed on humanity by less than 1/100,000 of the world population!

OFFEND, Mr. Kucinich,

OFFEND, Mr. Kucinich, OFFEND.. If only Mr. Obama had the courage and savvy to OFFEND our corporate, military, and political wealth establishment.
For the United States the momentum of world moral and economic leadership from WW II and the Cold War is fast fading. Our course in maintaining several wars and poor domestic economic policies does not bode well for the United States. I had hoped that our regressive national policies based on the past would receive the shock of the NEW and be replaced by forward looking policies that would reestablish our global leadership on all fronts, including and especially in the establishment of peace in the world. Our attention must be focused on the pressing problems of survival and happiness of the human species and the mystery of life and civilization itself. Thank you Mr. Kucinich and keep being OFFENSIVE. Peace.

Progressives need to think

Progressives need to think outside the box and support candidates such as Kucinich or Nader...The democratic party is no more than republican light...the only difference is the corporations they are beholden to...

I think it a stretch to say

I think it a stretch to say that US fighting in Viet Nam started in 1955. The broader point, though is that AFghanistan has become another Viet Nam in terms of US bog down. I sthought when the Viet Nam conflict ended that we would never do that again. HOw wrong I was. How short sighted or greedy or whatever people are. Thank you people of the US who voted for GW bush. Thanks a lot. Now we have real pickel. Depression and endless war. A sinking dependence on oil and the highest per captita incarceration rate in the world. Good going.

Just got to this. Bless

Just got to this. Bless you, Dennis K. You speak for me. I"m 71, a dual citizen of the US and Oz (Australia), where I've lived for 45 years. Married an Aussie. We met in America. It's a source of hope for me, the world of course, that men like you are in politics. Good on you, as we Aussies say!

Dennis K. speaks the truth,

Dennis K. speaks the truth, but alone he cannot change American politics anymore than Obama can. It is not politicians who must become actively engaged in making change happen, it's the masses. You, and me. And until we're ready to commit to that fact nothing will change, no matter who we elect.

Josh from NC (Nov 25 post) is right. The world is being run by a handful of families who run the military industrial and pharmaceutical complexes. They are the New World Order, and they don't care about "the people". The people are simply a resource to generate more wealth for them. They control the people through propaganda spread by the political parties and through the Matrix created by the media. And we let them, because we have been seduced by empty appeals to our basest natures; by appeals to our laziness, our egos, our greed, our selfishness, and our in security. That's the bald truth. When we're ready to deal with it, the world will change and not one minute before then.

We haven't declared war on

We haven't declared war on anyone since 1941. The war powers act gives the president all the power he needs to send troops into another country, and the congress' voting of funds to do so is an implicit approval. But we don't do the declaration thing any more, can't be bothered to actually follow the constitution.

We should never have invaded

We should never have invaded afghanistan, and occupying it is a horrible idea.

The land was lawless and generally undefended, and remains so today. The invasion was nothing more than a massive warning to terrorists and criminals, giving them time to scatter and dig in.

The proper way to deal with terrorism there is with surgical strikes and infiltration operations more resembling what the DEA does than the regular infantry. You will not defeat what basically is a global organized crime network by playing fair; they must be ambushed while their guard is down.

You will defeat terrorism,

You will defeat terrorism, when there is nothing left of the American system, when we are all bankrupt and bereft, for then there will be nothing left to give and they will be happy. Maybe the imposter taliban representative was actually a poppy grower. Has everyone forgotten the main Afghan produce? Heroin. Saw a blip in the Guardian last year that a CIA plane went down filled with thousands of kilos of heroin. Saw another small blip in the news that there's trillions of dollars of mineral wealth in those mountains. Don't be duped for a minute, it's all a war of corruption.

It feels good to read a

It feels good to read a commentary like this but it is lost in the rhetoric we hear on TV and in the media. It's like blowing in the wind, means nothing, goes 'round and 'round, does not good or harm. The peons are distracted with football, baseball and the internet while Rome/Democracy burns and Congress is playing the lute.

Love this multi-personality

Love this multi-personality Anonymous person. I think my favorite personality is General Lee Prokcinich, who apparently finds some comfort in the belief that the Vietnam war spanned the twenty years between 1955 and 1975. If we follow the logic of the General's supporting logic, we may assure ourselves that the Afghanistan/middle-east v USA conflict has persisted from about 1095 through the present - 915 years.

Dear Edvin: Perhaps OFFEND

Dear Edvin: Perhaps OFFEND is not Dennis's way. He should definitely EMBARRASS, however. SHAME on the warmongers, the REAL evildoers.
