Feelin' Alright
(Image: Lance Page / t r u t h o u t; Adapted: labguest, lepiaf.geo)

Seems I've got to have a change of scene
'Cause every night I have the strangest dream
Imprisoned by the way it could've been
Left here on my own
So it seems
I've got to leave before I start to scream
But someone locked the door and took the key ...

- Traffic

Calling the second half of January a catastrophe for the president, the Democrats and the country at large sells the word "catastrophe" short. A health care "reform" process that was already trailing smoke suddenly lost cabin pressure and spiraled into the sea when the single most unpoachable Senate seat in the history of the universe, held for 46 years by the late Ted Kennedy, flipped into Republican hands because Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley thought she could win without actually running a campaign. Before the screaming had a chance to die down after that debacle, the Supreme Court came swooping in and dropped a gigantic dung bomb on the entire body politic, delivering our democratic processes into the hands of corporations which already exert far too much influence over every facet of our lives.

Press play to listen to author William Rivers Pitt read his column, "Feelin' Alright":

President Obama and the Democratic majority in Congress emerged from the smoke and ash of this twin-bill disaster with little more than a perplexed look on their faces, further cementing the emerging public consensus that the 2008 elections put into power a group of well-meaning incompetents who, despite having the virtually unfettered ability to accomplish just about whatever they want, cannot seem to get out of their own way. A 41-seat minority in the Senate somehow translated into total power and complete victory for the GOP, and every pundit with the ability to draw breath began predicting an imminent Democratic bloodbath in the upcoming 2010 Congressional midterm elections.

Boy you sure took me for one big ride
Even now I sit and I wonder why
When I think of you I stop myself from crying
I just can't waste my time
I must get by
Got to stop believing in all your lies
'Cause there's too much to do before I die ...

On Wednesday night, President Obama will have the unenviable task of explaining to the American people that he, his administration and his Democratic allies in Congress are not, in fact, worthless. The American people overwhelmingly elected him because he promised to change the nature of politics, promised to right the ship after eight years of Bushian mayhem, promised to fix health care, create jobs, save the environment, rebuild the economy, bring the troops home from Iraq and defend the nation from terrorism, but after what may have been the fastest year on record, the glass remains definitively less than half full.

From across the ocean, the UK Guardian assessed the challenges arrayed before Mr. Obama in his Wednesday night State of the Union address:

How high are the stakes for Barack Obama's first state of the union address? They're high all right, but in a different way from most major Obama speeches in the past.

The pattern has been: trouble arises, whether on the issue of race (during the campaign) or how on earth a wartime president could be awarded the world's most prestigious peace prize (during his presidency). A big speech is planned. Obama either nails it (the race speech) or at least comes up with language that nearly everyone concedes is thoughtful and serious (the Nobel lecture). The result in both of those cases, and others, was that Obama was able to finesse the hanging questions with rhetoric: statements of abstract principles, acknowledgment of contradiction and nuance, broad visionary assessments of where the country and world are and where they ought to go.

For a state of the union speech - any one, but this one more than most - rhetoric won't suffice. The situation he faces now, teetering at the midpoint in polls and facing the loss of the (allegedly) bullet-proof Senate super-majority, is about facts. It's about the reality he is in, and how he is going to respond to it. This speech won't be judged on the basis of the capital-V Vision, but on the clarity of eyesight about very concrete things.

In other words, if Mr. Obama maintains his above-the-fray countenance in the face of very real and ever-increasing anxiety within the American public about his attitude and performance, another well-phrased political aria from the podium won't get the job done. A year later, most people are feeling only a year older, a year poorer and more than a little disappointed.

Don't get too lost in all I say
'Cause at the time I really felt that way
But that was then and now it's today
I can't escape
I guess I'm here to stay
'til someone comes along to take my place
With a different name and a different face ...

Of course, it has only been a year. The mess left behind by the previous administration - indeed, by the last ten administrations - has translated into a series of seemingly insurmountable dilemmas that would challenge the wits and will of King Solomon himself. Combine that with a Republican Party far removed from its Linconian roots and in the thrall of a base whose hatred and desire to simply destroy rather than create is all consuming, and the task before Obama and his people becomes even more daunting.

But he wanted the job. He wanted it so badly, in fact, that he spent nearly a thousand days trying to get it. Now it's his, warts and all. The American people, well-trained in the art of short-term memory loss, have come to the conclusion that everything happening now is Obama's fault, and the polls reflect this without dispute. One speech on Wednesday night won't fix all that ails us, but if Mr. Obama doesn't hit precisely the right notes in the delivery, his second year could come to make his first year seem like a Cape Cod clambake by comparison.

Is he up to it? Are we?

Feelin' alright
I'm not feeling too good myself ...

All I know is that Obama

All I know is that Obama better use the State of the Union address to explain where he was born, why he's a combo Marxist/fascist/socialist, why he has an innate hatred for white people, and why he wants to kill my grandma!

It is all Obama's fault.

It is all Obama's fault. What's the point with this chicken scratch? A Senate seat prevents restoring Habeus Corpus- for example?

Let's don't be too hard on

Let's don't be too hard on Poor Martha! She was just following the lead of Al Gore, who in Year 2000, sleep-walked through the campaign; and, then, gave up his fight in the courts "for the good of the country!" And, we all know how that turned out!!!

The Dem's are wonderful practitioners of that old adage that "those who fail to pay attention to History are doomed to repeat it!!!"

I think that you have to put

I think that you have to put this all in context of an empire run amok, a people with the shallowest of intents and awareness, an overpopulated world on the verge of unmitigated disaster. to expect any one person to be able to solve human nature's foibles is asking alot. I also think that the guys that gave so much money to the pentagon, the banks and handed over control of the "democracy" deserve to live in cardboard hovels like some of the people they have screwed over and killed. I don't know what the answers are anymore, I used to think I knew, maybe it has a lot to do with spending more time in the garden, or in meditation or
playing music with my friends, good luck out there

frank1569 is an example of

frank1569 is an example of one of millions of Fox News casualties. It's hard to believe how easy it is for media to manipulate the masses and get them to believe almost anything. But really now, after taking a deep breath, can you believe the stupidity embedded in this man's consciousness?

Hope you're being facetious

Hope you're being facetious "All I know is that..." Frank. President Obama never said he was "magic," but the electorate somehow thought he would be and now they are disappointed. If things are in the toilet, it is due to the stupidity and utterly gullible nature of average Americans. The man has been in office one year. Our country was teetering at the brink when he took the reigns. It's almost magical that we are not at the bottom of the abyss right now. Obama is wise, capable, and eloquent. He has surrounded himself with people of the same caliber. None of them, however, is superhuman. The man told us all up front that change would come slowly and that things could get worse before getting better. The most blame I can lay on this administration is that they wasted a year trying to "play nice" with the nihilist party of "No." That's gotta change....and the polls the media keeps citing...bogus. Nobody I have ever spoken to holds those views and I live in a so-called "red" state. The only superhuman quality I see is the massive superhuman power of insanity wielded by the GOP.

Grabbing For Straws, Pitt

Grabbing For Straws, Pitt attempts to blame the loss on Coakley when in fact the citizens would rather have a stripper than a profligate spender, although the 'war on terror' will continue to drain and cripple this Nation - but at this point seems to have true bipartisan support. Indeed, repealing the stack of dictatorial signing orders from the previous administration would have been a unilateral show of authenticity that O could have done unilaterally, but they remain intact - a testament to the fact that nothing has changed at all, except that racial equality has been demonstrated, even in the highest office of the land. It is time to abandon the false Right/Left paradigm - both dems and pubs spend more than we have - they create debt - that is their primary function, to put us in debt any way possible - whether through war or welfare. For any program, ask yourself: Why does this have to be a Federal program rather than a state or local program?

Hmmmm. And I thought

Hmmmm. And I thought frank1569 was just satirizing the teabag meme. Maybe he'll come back and enlighten us!

The Democrats are extremely

The Democrats are extremely incompetent. It's so sad, because the Republicans are extremely evil. The Republicans are d*cks, and the Democrats are p*ssies, and they are both screwing us over!

The problem was in the end

The problem was in the end we just got more of the same. Just like Bush he supports illegal wiretaps, expanding the war, rendition, giving away trillions in tax dollars to private entities, his administration which was supposed to be based on transparency is anything but, and an administration that swore to end the pull of lobbyists is instead made up of them. This is politics as usual, deal making and selling out the people who voted you in while telling them you are on their side and hoping the media lies become the truth. Just sick.

fighting through an

fighting through an apparatus that was put in place by 30 years of corrupt presidents and congressese's and pentagons thoroughly entrenched in the pockets of the Republicans and Blue Dogs to make real change isn't going to happen overnight. This is the task facing Obama. What I think people are most upset about is that he hasn't proven he's even fighting back.

Three Dog Night had it first

Three Dog Night had it first methinks... what's a Marxist/fascist/socialist? Sounds pretty schizophrenic to me... The hatred does seem to run deep in politics these days, I feel like a stranger in a strange land. How about the progressives (who are hurting as a result of government behavior) and the so-called tea-baggers (who are hurting as a result of government behavior) getting together and finding some common ground? All I ever see is alienation from the progressive side, and their complaints are mostly the same as ours, they've just been misdirected as to the specifics of the causes. Talk about the issues affecting us all first, work on the common ground, then work to show them the misdirection and agree to disagree when necessary. We're all in the same sinking boat. First of all though, quit directing hatred AT them, because hatred breeds only hatred in response. As many reporters that have interviewed participants in tea-bag rallies have attested to, the vast majority of them are more clear headed than the vocal leadership. We're going to need them to find our way out of this mess so let's start finding ways to engage them. Directing hatred at them will just push them further into Rush's camp.

If Obama doesn't fire

If Obama doesn't fire Geithner it's time for this country to explode. ('Vichy' stooge is *worse* then Bush.) His administration caved like a beaten mule to big corporate rule. Pathetic pandering while people starve.

"'O-bomb-a' of a thousand

"'O-bomb-a' of a thousand days" is only going to give us more rhetoric, and he's not going to keep virtually any of his promises again, or only put on a show of doing so by fulfilling one or two things that won't make any substantive difference. Why? Because he's not about to seriously disappoint his corporate-fascist masters known as Wall Street, et al.

When are you "liberals" going to face that this guy was selected, not to do the will of the majority of the People, but to sell us and the country out even further into a corporate-fascist militarized police state. Very soon you are going to see that those of us who you considered to be "extremists" and "exaggerators", etc., weren't wrong after all, but by then it's going to be too late, if it isn't already, to take back this Constitutional republic and STOP its inexorable slide into totalitarian fascism.

Most of you will go listen to "O-bomb-a's" speech because you WANT to be further deceived, and he and his puppet-masters know it, so he and they will be more than happy to oblige you. I used to go listen to all of Bush's "State of the Union" speeches because I truly, and ONLY, wanted to find out how he was further going to lie and deceive; but, with the advent of "O-bomb-a", I have completely stopped listening to these lies dressed up in false nationalism and so-called "patriotism", etc., because I now see completely through these evil "sock-puppets" and don't even want to find out how they're going to further deceive and lie anymore.

There's no need, because doing so is NOT going to save this republic. I already know just how extremely evil people like "O-bomb-a" are; therefore, I don't need to further subject myself to their cunning evil and sophistry, masked with a "pretty face", anymore.

DOWN WITH WAR CRIMINAL AND MASS-MURDERER "O-BOMB-A"!!!!! IMPEACH THIS CORPORATE-FASCIST SHILL AND TRAITOR TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ITS PEOPLE, ITS CONSTITUTION, AND TO THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!!

Two thirds of Massachusetts

Two thirds of Massachusetts voting apparatus is non-verifiable electronic. In the one third that was COUNTED BY HAND, Coakley won.

Obama is a DISASTER. He paid

Obama is a DISASTER. He paid off Pharma and gutted Health Insurance "reform", including banning Canadian Rx imports. Gitmo is not resolved, he's wishey-washey on if they are to be tried in civil or military. Geithner, the tax-cheat, lied today on his involvement with AIG-Goldman payoffs, so did Paulson. Iraq has no reporting, it's in chaos. Afganistan is now the "crisis", so Gates can re-establish military-industrial war hardware spending (which is the entire durable good exports, the US is the largest weapons exporter in the world). Americans need to gut their household debt, move all monies to local solvent community banks, and preserve all cash. In an act of desperation Puttman Pimp CEO Reynolds made the rounds on the financial tv today to lobby Congress and re-invent the movement for Private Social Security accounts, by back-dooring his "saving American savers" by getting Congress to MANDATE 401K/IRAs monies going into STOCKS (or Treasuries) since we savers have made NO MONEY in stocks for 10 years, this Pimp of the mutual fund industry, Puttman Investments, sees an opening, a weakness in Congress, a CRISIS, so he is your White Knight, to save American savers. BE AWARE. There are movements to abscond with your savings. These slime-balls will stop at nothing, when they invent a "crisis".

The simple truth is that ALL

The simple truth is that ALL incumbents are in jeopardy now. The repiglicans will receive their proper buttkicking in November. There are nearly as many democraps the must get the boot NOW too......
We all became dems for A DAY TO ELECT oBAMA, WHO i STILL HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR.
Party ties are dead. It will takr true bipartisan rejection by the voters to provide a congress adequate for our country. It is CORRUPTION that we want OUT.

Obama needs to fire Geithner

Obama needs to fire Geithner and RAHM EMANUEL, immediately.

Next, put Howard Dean in Emanuel's place.

After that, he needs to fully activate his 14 million-person base (established during the election, and chomping at the bit in frustration ever since).

Then,
DEMAND the Public Option be put back in the HC bill.

Then,
BEGIN FIGHTING HARD!!!!

Use the bully pulpit and the 14 million to actively attack any opposition, bith from the GOP and the Bluedogs (same thing really).

Take no prisoners!!

Humiliate and disgrace all enemies who stand in the way.

Be a total WARRIOR,
or don't bother at all.

Looks like Limbaugh's dream

Looks like Limbaugh's dream is coming true.
Me, I'm heading for Costa Rica to retire in peace.
Good luck, America.

Oh good lord people, Frank

Oh good lord people, Frank was being ironic. Since it obviously needs to be spelled out, his point appears to be that while the Democrats were trying to fix the economy and health care, the best the GOP could come up with were pointless distractions and ad hominem attacks. Jumping in and calling him an idiot just makes y'all look foolish.

right on, nikto. You forgot

right on, nikto. You forgot Summers on the short fire list...and Hillary Clinton.

Won't get fooled again?

Won't get fooled again? There's nothing like a naive sense of hope being smashed to bits to make you feel stupid.
I'm with you Procyon, Costa Rica is looking pretty good right about now.

But the NAPPYS (No Account

But the NAPPYS (No Account President and Party of Yoo're Screwed) ARE WORTHLESS! (AND so are the miserepublican sticks-in-the-mud). But it's now time for the BOWEL (Barack Obama's Worth Even Less) Movement. Only 1088 days to GO!

President Obama is just

President Obama is just allright! Consider what he is up against: ignorance, apathy, idiocy, greed, incompetence, chaos, hate, anger, and racism. These are the influences that are ruling America, brought to you by the ruling elite. We weren't fooled, we were cheated! Unite behind our President, who is doing his best.

Good luck moving to Costa

Good luck moving to Costa Rica, things are getting bad there. I have a friend who moved from San Diego several yrs ago, the economy follows ours, he had to sell his house he built at cost, Ex-Pats (Gringos) are not welcome or supported by the locals now (blamed for surging property values and bust), tourism fell off a cliff and those Americans living there are dealing with this:

We have just learned that dozens of open pit commercial gravel mining operations have been approved by The Costa Rican Government here on The Osa. In the coming months, from the Rio Rincon all the way to the Rio Tigre, expect to see dozens of international companies mining their way through our rivers with 100’s of trucks per day destroying our river estuaries water sheds and the end of “Pura Vida”! This will also choke the gulf as it is expected that this gravel will be used for all future construction projects on or near the Osa as well (i.e the proposed new international airport in Palmar Norte). EVERY Osa river has concessions lined up for approval. A privately hired geologist believes there might b

South America won't cut it

South America won't cut it anymore... the deal for military bases in Colombia is most likely in preparation to stomp out that horrible political movement overtaking the continent called democracy, I've heard a rumor that TomDispatch will discuss this in February. I've also heard that the CIA is inserting large numbers of agents in S.A. S Wolf, I'm not going to argue this round because my only difference with you regarding this is on the degree of your anger, not the underlying premises and conclusions. I read in another post that Vermont is running secessionist candidates, I've been considering moving there and that is another point in the state's favor.

"...(T)he degree of (my)

"...(T)he degree of (my) anger...", Curt?! You aren't angry?! If not, why not?! Our country is being sold out to globalism, world government, the eradication of True Liberty and Freedom, and mass corporate-fascist, military-industrial subjugation and enslavement and has been extremely successful already!! For God's sake, if that isn't more than enough good reason(s) to be VERY angry, I don't know what is!!

What has falsely believing that anger is "wrong", and curbing it, ever done for us?! It's gotten ten million innocent intellectuals and others interred and exterminated in Germany in the 1930s and '40s. It's gotten black Americans lynched, murdered, beaten to a pulp, wrongfully imprisoned in most cases, and "hosed" in more ways than one for the entire history of the United States. It's gotten about ten million innocent human beings, who were supposedly "guilty" only because they were so-called "useless peasants", mass-slaughtered at the hands of the U.S. government and military in the past 120 years or so. And the list goes on and on and on...

To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, one of the greatest True American Patriots of the nineteenth century, when he answered a question from his friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Why aren't you (angry), Waldo?" If Thoreau thought the U.S. was beginning to descend into the opposite of liberty about 160 years ago, it makes that descent a walk in the park compared to the hell that the U.S. is descending into right now.

So, Curt and others, please get angry, if you aren't already, and constructively channel that anger into waking up the washed-of-brains and dumbed-down majority of "Americans" to also get angry and constructively stand up against this descent into "American and world hell on earth". Howard Zinn (may he rest in peace) and many others would expect nothing less of us.

Now, to paraphrase Mahatmus Gandhi, "Be the (True American and world patriots) you wish to see (preserve True 'Constitutional Republic-anism', National Sovereignty, Independence, Human Rights, and Liberty) in the world". And Dr. King, "...(H)ave a dream (and make it a reality by being VERY angry at all of the un-American destruction of this country and world, and eradication of all of its human rights and civil liberties, and properly channel that anger to save this country and world)..."!

God help us if we don't!

If not Costa Rica then maybe

If not Costa Rica then maybe Germany or the Netherlands. I am just disgusted with the lack of real leadership from the progressives. The right wingers are so much more organized and politically motivated.

I'm reading a lot of

I'm reading a lot of frustration among those who comment on TO articles. But there is a solution besides moving to CR, but it starts with being able to understand the truth about the real cause that has led us to a near despotic government situation in the USA. Henry George, in his book Progress and Poverty, explained the current situation of the USA more than 130 years ago. He also put forward the only feasible solution, the transfer of all taxation off of labor and productive capital and commerce and onto land and resource values and other "natural monopolies" such as public utilities, radio frequencies, etc. Monopoly power is what is killing the world. Leftists confuse it with "Capitalism" and it is the reason that "free markets' seem to be anything but free. God didn't make the Earth for it to be fenced off by those who don't use it, and monopolized for private speculative gain. The first human right, just behind the right to our own selves, is the equal right to access to mother Earth and her resources. Private property in land always leads to land monopoly, which enslaves all those who need land to live and produce on. All the other monopolies and corruption result from that primary cause. The proposed tax shift onto land values will get our ship back on even keel.

HG, some good ideas, but let

HG, some good ideas, but let me suggest "Web of Debt" as a good book to read to help round out your understanding. It's subject is essentially the banking industry and the means that they use to enslave everyone to debt with a Ponzi scheme that has been legal everywhere for centuries, and taxes related to property leave those that are the worst offenders almost completely off the hook. As the rich and the corporations set limits on our government, the bankers set limits on the corporations. As for anger, I've been angry since about 1960 or so, but with all that experience I've learned that unfettered anger isn't good for anyone and obstructs constructive dialog and debate, and I've learned not to let it take control of me or my words. One of the things I'm most angry about is that in the late 60's and 70's we had a movement going in the right direction that somehow evaporated, as a result of a political system that knows how to manipulate populist agenda, embrace it when it becomes popular and redirect it into the current political system where it gets watered down until it is again part of the mainstream, something I never understood until I read that recently departed American hero, Howard Zinn. The other thing that really angers me at this time is a people that continue to cling to an illusion of safety and security and subscribe to hatred of innocents despite all the obvious, undeniable and irrefutable facts staring them in the face that those they continue to follow are the truly culpable ones for the causes of their difficulties. Were it not for TruthOut and other sites on the web far outside the mainstream I would think myself the only sane person on the planet, because almost all those I encounter in my daily life are anything but, continuing to believe that if they ignore the truth and pretend it doesn't exist everything will work out ok.

Now I'm with you all the

Now I'm with you all the way, Curt; but I think you believe me to be (far?) more angry than I am, or unconstructively angry which I'm not. [Btw, you can simply hit "Enter" now and create separate paragraphs with line spaces between them---it also took me a while to realize how other people were doing it, as you didn't used to be able to do that here.]

I can hardly stand to go out to run my errands and deal with people. If most of them don't get angry at you when you try to wake them up, even gently, to what is really going on, they paste a completely dense, phony smile on their faces and humor you like they supposedly know you to be the most insane person on the planet. It hurts so much that I can barely deal with it.

Most people have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, and they don't want to know; and, as I alluded to above, they think you're completely crazy for believing (actually knowing) the things that you do about what's really going on, because they refuse to believe that those things are actually going on, or have gone on.

That's what I mean about most people having been "dumbed-down", and about how effective that process has been. It's actually chemical and not simply lack of true education. People have been so poisoned with fluoride, female hormones, antidepressants, etc., that they literally don't know which end is up. They really believe that leading shallow, phony lives is "normal", "acceptable" and "preferable".

And getting through to them is well-nigh impossible because of just how insane they've been so effectively led to believe those who face and stand up against what's really going on supposedly "are". It is so sad that, rather than getting too angry, I almost can't function sometimes; and, if it wasn't for supplementation with Vitamin 'D-3' and St. John's Wort, I wouldn't be able to function.

But, Curt, I know I'm "preaching to the choir", and that you know all of this about the literal "washing of brains" of most people and how sad it is. I too would often almost feel like I'm the only sane person on earth, or one of an extremely "few and far between" minority, if I didn't have sites of truth to be set free by and to give me the satisfaction of not living a truly mass-insane "mentality".

Hang in there Curt and all those who are set free by the truth, as painful as it is especially with the level of avoidance and denial of it, etc., and don't let the degree of blindness to True Reality and Normality get you so down that you can't do anything constructive, but do whatever it takes, peacefully and non-violently, to wake more and more people up to become a force for TRUE Change and Hope that cannot be stopped.

Oh, and I should have

Oh, and I should have further said that without sublingual Vitamin 'B-12', also important and excellent against depression, I wouldn't be able to function. ('D-3' is additionally important and excellent against cancer, too.)

THANK YOU, NIKTO! YOU SPEAK

THANK YOU, NIKTO! YOU SPEAK SUCH GOOD SENSE! Rahm Emmanuel hasn't been a friend to ANY working Americans for EIGHT YEARS. The people with the best-supported campaigns seem to believe they have to kowtow to him. This American worker wants NONE of him and his ilk. As to firing Hillary, no; she doesn't need to go away, just divest from Carlyle Group and deport all the Blackwater thugs out of the State Department. Hire real Americans, Hil, not extortionist thugs. Can someone please send Addington and Yoo to the Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity? And, T/O, please do something about S. Wolf Britain; he blithers like he's brain-damaged so that it takes forever to get to wise posts like those of Curt or HG. Delete me if you like, but I'm taking "swolf" with me!
