From Manifest Destiny to Manifest Insanity

by: Dr. Roberto Cintli Rodriguez, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

As a result of several recent draconian laws, Arizona's image has taken a drubbing internationally. And yet, Arizona is but the spear. In reality, its politics are not dramatically different from those of other states, or from Washington's. More than a dozen states are waiting in the wings with copycat legislation, and the Obama administration continues to view migration through the prisms of law enforcement and military might.

Fueled by hateful and cowardly politicians and the hate-radio universe, these new and emerging laws are undeniably anti-Mexican and anti-immigrant, but most of all, they are anti-indigenous. In effect, they are an extension of Manifest Destiny. Its modern expression is Manifest Insanity - an attempt to maintain, amid the "browning" of the nation, the myth of America as the pristine home God promised to English-speaking, white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants.

The new Arizona laws are part of a spasmodic reaction to the demographic shift that immigration sets in motion; they are an attempt to maintain a political and cultural dominance over indigenous peoples, who are seen as nonhumans from defeated nations. The laws seek to maintain the narrative of conquest, an archetype dictating that the deaths of some 5,000 primarily indigenous Mexicans and Central Americans in the Arizona/Sonora desert in the past dozen years mean little in this clash. It is the same narrative used to rationalize the recent killings of two Mexicans by US agents along the US/Mexico border.

For those who are attempting to uphold this dominance, the browning of America represents a time reversal - a cultural and political turnabout of the so-called triumph of Western civilization. This is what Arizona represents: a civilizational clash, and a clash of narratives over the myth of America itself - nothing less.

Rodolfo Acuña, author of "Occupied America," came to Arizona last week offering a stark reminder about this clash. His book - along with Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" - has been at the center of the anti-ethnic-studies firestorm that culminated when Gov. Jan Brewer signed HB 2281 last month. (She had signed SB 1070 - the racial profiling law - the previous month.)

The controversy surrounding Acuña's book has been fueled by an extreme Eurocentric ignorance. For several years, State Superintendent Tom Horne has been pushing an "Americanization" agenda, insisting that Arizona students be exposed only to "Greco-Roman" knowledge. Knowledge centered elsewhere, including the Mesoamerican, or Maize, knowledge that is indigenous to this continent, is generally considered subversive and un-American. This knowledge is at the philosophical heart of Mexican American, or Raza, studies. Arizona is not alone in this insanity; Texas education officials recently banned the inclusion of labor leader Dolores Huerta in the state's school curricula.

Horne has long claimed that Raza studies preach hate, result in segregation, and promote anti-Americanism and the violent overthrow of the US government. Truth is, he has had a vendetta against Raza studies since Dolores Huerta proclaimed at Tucson High in 2006 that Republicans "hate Latinos." Horne (who constantly denigrates Huerta as "Cesar Chavez's former girlfriend") and his allies have spent the past several years trying to prove her right.

As Acuña found out in Arizona, the mere act of embracing a different philosophical center constitutes a threat to those invested in the cultural and political domination that would negate inclusive worldviews in education. More than that, it threatens the national narrative of taming a wild, savage and empty continent and conquering, exterminating and civilizing "the Indians."

Occupied America upsets the carefully crafted myth of the United States as the land of freedom and democracy or Paradise on Earth.

Raza studies' critics in Arizona - including media professionals - are barely familiar with Acuña's book. (He matter-of-factly tells them to read his book before attacking him.) At best, they spar over its title and a few catch phrases (mistranslating "La Raza" to mean "The Race" as opposed to "The People") and attempt to denigrate an entire discipline on the basis of their ignorance. Yet, at the core of their argument, the critics are correct. Ethnic studies is indeed a threat to the mythical America where the genocide, land theft, slavery and dehumanization that are the foundation of this nation are denied, or are mere footnotes. (Unchallenged, this glossed-over view permits US citizens to view permanent war as a God-given birthright.) Such complete denial - accompanied by the complementary myth of an empty continent - renders the concept of occupied America completely unfathomable.

Raza studies' critics attempt to dehumanize Mexicans/Chicanos. In the critics' conjured narrative, Mexicans/Chicanos are neither legitimate Americans nor legitimate human beings, neither are they afforded the status of indigenous peoples. At best, they are mongrels, undeserving of full human rights. The survival of this narrative is dependent upon the process of deindigenization and dehumanization. Those of us that cannot be deported (it remains to be seen what's in store during next year's battle in Arizona over the 14th Amendment and birthright citizenship) are welcome here - as long as we participate in our own assimilation - or ethnic cleansing - and accept this nation's mythologized narrative.

That's the definition of Manifest Insanity.

So nations can't control

So nations can't control their borders? Is the author asking to abolish nations and their particular cultures, all in the name of multiculturalism?

Would he support the migration of millions of "white" Americans to Mexico? How about the migration of thousands of gringos in the early 19th Century, which led to the theft of half of Mexico?

And what about the environmental impact of immigration-influenced population growth? Can't some countries somewhere say "enough" to the addition of tens of millions of new people and their ensuing descendants?

anti Mexican ,anti

anti Mexican ,anti immigrant, don't you mean anti illegal Mexican and illegal immigrant, why doesn't the Dr. start a movement to reinstate laws banning the short hoe if really wants to contribute to real peoples welfare let there be law and dignity to everyone including Americans of all origins,,,in New Mexico the high desert is named Hornado De Muerto ,oven of death , many pioneers crossing it died , you respect this land and carry water even today,or face the consequences , life isn't about baby sitting adults,,,, really is tiresome hearing mestizos spouting off about native Americans the record of treatment of Injuns by Mexico and the Spaniards in history and now is Dismal ,the doctor should take a job as an instructor on an Apache res and see if they want to be told educational revelations

Both comments above, Golddog

Both comments above, Golddog and Anonymous, pretty well illustrate Dr. Rodriguez' point.

BTW, Anon, it's Jornado del Muerto in NM, which translates into "journey" of death, not "oven" of death...the "j" is pronounced in Spanish as an "h" in English. Perhaps you're also confusing the term with the mestizo/Navajo name for "oven", which is "horno." I will admit, though that living in Phoenix, AZ, is like living in an operating pizza oven!

The NM desert area known as Jornado del Muerto, between Socorro and El Paso, TX, was so named for its barrenness and lack of water, as the Rio Grande often ran dry for extended periods through that country. Settlers and soldiers traversing from Santa Fe to El Paso del Norte -- in either direction -- also often encountered hostile Indian tribes, which led to numerous deaths on the trip.

What a crock... disguised as

What a crock... disguised as truth? Not once does the good Doctor use the adjective "illegal" which is what the Arizona Law 1070 is all about. It is an instructional law for Arizona officials to use when a person is stopped for suspicion of violating some non-immigration related law, and is then suspected to be an illegal alien. No, not a Mexican immigrant, but an illegal alien..from Arabia, China, France, Italy, Brazil, etc., etc., including Mexico. The good Doctor's indignation would be better vented at the dictionary definition of "illegal immigrant', and the U.S. Immigration Laws. Oh, and we don't teach Italian, Chinese, French, or any other foreign civics and history in our public schools, why should we be forced to teach Mexico's?

No one is "illegal." This

No one is "illegal." This is not in the Constitution, period.
Open borders, reduce the debt! What do we have to lose? NAFTA? Corporate Hegemony over labor? (Both of those, at least)
Don't let Big Business exploit anyone, anywhere, which is what they do with "borders". When the Nationalists get louder and louder, rest assured xenophobia and hate are always nearby. My my. Things never change.

What an excellent piece of

What an excellent piece of writing. Thank you for speaking out, for letting lose, for giving the oppressed a voice.

Look up the definition of "a

Look up the definition of "a good Indian".

"... and the Obama

"... and the Obama administration continues to view migration through the prisms of law enforcement and military might."

Are you surprised? Obama is practically a "card carrying" Republican, for God's sake, quite in the mold of Diane Feinstein and the other neoliberal Blue Dogs in Congress. Obama is trash and our political system has been poisoned, trashed, polluted, killed systemically by people like Obama. This is no suppressed progressive as many gullible liberals believe and continue to believe. The key word in that last sentence is BELIEVE. He's a hardcore conservative, racist, violent, callous and all with those mathematical models derived from the Univ. of Chicago, swimming around in his pathetic head, justifying his current course; his current doomsday course of the big business, military industrial complex logic.

Who Here Locks their Windows?

Who Here Locks their Windows? And do you care whether people come in through the front door, invited, or is it just the same to you if they break through your window at night to come into your house?  We are the only country with such an absurdly lax immigration policy - for the law breaking immigrants, that is - while it is really tough on those who respect our laws and immigrate within them.  What is most troubling to me is people (brown or white, alike) from countries and cultures who tolerate (read: 'have produced') very corrupt governments and limited freedoms, and these people come in without even a basic historical perspective (required by those who immigrate legally) of the history and laws upon which our government is however imperfectly based.  As their numbers and influences swell, we can expect our country to morph into one that resembles the tyrannical and corrupt nations they fled for economic reasons - not because they are brown, but because of a tradition of tyranny.  Note that FDR sent home the aliens during the Depression, so that US Citizens would have better employment prospects - he would be branded a 'racist' today. Anyone who doubts that La Raza Unida is a frankly racist and hate filled organization needs to listen to some of the Spanish language radio stations in South Texas - starting over thirty years ago.  Bravo to Slim's 'What a crock' post above.

It's the same story on the

It's the same story on the other side of the Mexican border and has been for 300 years. The Spanish conquered the indigenous people, spread disease like smallpox that killed 90% of them in most areas (Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero and Yucutan were the exceptions and the only places where large indigenous populations, language and cultures survived) leaving a highly racist power structure with white Hispano Crillos on top, Spanish speaking Mestizos making up most of the population below and Indios (many of whom do not even speak Spanish) as an underclass. And Mestizos are expected to participate in their own assimilation in Mexico just as they are in the US. Another triumph of Greco-Roman culture. After all, why are Mexicans called Latinos? And why are Spanish language Telenovelas cast with so many pale skinned blondes?
Truly Arizona both takes advantage of and has absorbed racism and racist attitudes South of the border and White Arizonans are a lot more like White Mexicans in Sonora than they care to admit to themselves.

anti mexican? hate

anti mexican? hate politicians? Do you really believe this? How about anti illegal. How about protecting our country. Do you believe in that? Go to China and be an illegal. Go to the Philippines and be an illegal. How do they treat illegals in Mexico. Stop saying this is hate and racist, cause its not. It's about protecting our borders. Using the race card is a primitive way of getting your point across.

a rant, a duel of words no

a rant, a duel of words no reasoned dialogue, the same old repeated mindless cliches. of course learning history is important and we would not have to have ethnic studies, women's and indigenous history or specialized courses, if the real history of this country was taught. manifast destiny is a case in point and was the excuse for illegal immigration on a massive scale of land grabbing.

"They'll steal our jobs" Is

"They'll steal our jobs" Is a simple minded lie.
Yes, VW, GM and every other corporation do not want to pay a Mexican autoworker as well as an American, which is why they outsource. Politically connected Defense Contractors or quasi Government entities like Fannie Mae want to make sure they can lever against the American worker, by making sure they can use tools like H1B's and work visas to exploit foreigners. Both unfair advantages would be destroyed by open borders, which is why they are pumping the dishonesty about "job loss, crime or border protection".

GM took it's took its

GM took it's took its bailout loan and built a new plant in China ,they've done so well that they have repaid the govt back ,good ,there are a lot of Chinese smuggling them selves in across the border to ,to take jobs ,they're not here on vacation,I don't want to strain you but Chinese military intelligence is already on the ground in Mexico ,you know the guys who helped North Vietnam kick our butt, well ,they lending their expertise to the cartels ,and flooding the usa with unsustainable burdens is part of their plan to create chaos in the usa and walk in unopposed , China is building the worlds second largest seaport on the Mexican West coast ,the lights are on but nobody's home ,wake up and smell the coffee

As the banksters rob us all

As the banksters rob us all blind, those of us in the working classes are encouraged to scrabble among each other for the few bones we are thrown. Arizona's problem isn't illegal immigration. Arizona's problem is a a developer-driven economy, corrupt governance, anti-union laws, and inadequate human services. Wages have historically been extremely low. As times have gotten harder, and the competition for jobs more fierce, it is no surprise that immigration has been targeted. However, it is the oligarchy that is to blame for the woes of AZ, as it is for the rest of the country.

This isn't about racism, folks. We should not allow ourselves to be distracted by attempts to pit us against one another and do something about the REAL criminals that wear nice suits and steal us all blind.
