Glenn Beck = Stupid + Hypocrite?

Glenn Beck. (Photo: Gage Skidmore; Edited: Jared Rodriguez / t r u t h o u t)
He is a self-professed rodeo clown and a millionaire huckster – a true American success story.
Glenn Beck said, “I beg you, look for the words ‘social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes.”
Really?
Glenn Beck is a Mormon.
As Dwight said in This Boy’s Life: “I know a thing or two about a thing or two.”
Mormons pay tithing – a tenth of their earnings. A portion of that money funds the Mormon Welfare System to aid the poor and the down-and-out. It is the “widow’s mite” that feeds the orphan and the weak.
The Mormon Welfare system has been lauded as efficient and humane – it is supported by church run welfare farms that raise wheat and cattle – by canning operations that package and preserve fruits and vegetables for the Bishop’s Store where the needy and un-employed members can take their chit and buy groceries for their family.
And if you have no money, you work at the welfare farm or the second-hand stores or the canning facility or help deliver clothing and food to shut-ins and the frail. You work for the good of the whole and contribute what you are able so that others can benefit in times of need. Church members volunteer or get volunteered to work these facilities, as a reminder that while you may never need these services – others do and always will.
Mormons are among the first charitable groups to land in disaster zones like Haiti or Chile or Africa or flood and hurricane disasters in Florida, Louisiana, Ohio and elsewhere. They bring clothes, food and aid. Much of it bought and paid for by the tithing and other donations of its members.
So will Glenn Beck renounce Mormonism and leave the Mormon Church?
Church was a bad thing in my childhood – painful and evil and lonely. I rant a lot against churches. As I’ve said before, I don’t do the “church” thing. But that doesn’t mean they are entirely bad or evil.
Preachers and churches bound together for civil rights and for social justice. Many churches run soup kitchens and homeless shelters and do many good works in their communities. Priests and Pastors battle war and racism and poverty and violence.
So is Glenn Beck stupid or just a hypocrite?
Beck wants you to think he is the modern day Howard Beale. The heroic Beale who shouted, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”
The brilliance of Paddy Chayefsky’s Network was that Howard Beale, like most of us human beings, was a combination of light and darkness, a fractured wholeness glued together by desperation and hope.
Beck has chosen to be the damaged Beale, the crumpled and broken man who sat before CEO Arthur Jensen as Arthur preached the corporate gospel:
Arthur Jensen: “There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today… The world is a business, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business… One vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock. All necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you, Mr. Beale, to preach this evangel.”
Howard Beale: “Why me?
Arthur Jensen: “Because you’re on television, dummy…”
Howard Beale: “I have seen the face of God.”
Arthur Jensen: You just might be right, Mr. Beale.”
Roger Ailes, CEO of FOX News recently reminded his staff to support the FOX family and not air criticisms or doubts about the mighty Beck.
Glenn Beck is a Bible-thumping bunko artist, whose only God is: ratings.
Paycheck principles and snake-oil spirituality can buy million-dollar houses.
Is Glenn Beck a hypocrite or just stupid? I guess you could say –
Glen Beck is wily as a FOX.
A rich stupid hypocrite of FOX.

Perhaps the Mormon Elders should discipline this wayward member of their flock?
His actions go against everything I have EVER experienced with my Mormon students, who have all been kind and compassionate, in spite of their often extremely rightwing and conservative up bringing.
Glenn needs to attend some remedial seminary sessions, and reread the gospel. And, while I have great doctrinal differences with my Mormon brethren , I do agree with their basic social care efforts.

Sat, 03/20/2010 - 15:57 — Anonymous (not verified)Well given the two options I would say neither, first of all Mormons don't "get volunteered" it is purely by choice, there is no consequence for not volunteering. Second, Mormons do not promote socialism, they promote charity. They have never, nor will ever, make someone pay up for charity. Tithing is NOT an obligation, it is an act of faith... if one does it or not, it is their choice. Thirdly if all this author can do is talk about Glenn Beck's religion and not about the context of what he actually said and what it actually meant then this article was not well thought out... now was it? All I see is a phrase that is completely taken out of context and its meaning is twisted... in my opinion this author is no better than the stupid hypocrite he accused Mr. Beck of being. Assuming that all he cares about is ratings and a paycheck just makes this author out to sound like an ass. What about all his other talks? Why would people listen to him? Why are his listeners growing? Maybe this author should find out instead of blindly trowing punches in the dark. All I see in this article are opinions and assumptions in this article. Seriously... I mean what kind of person who wants to criticize someone writes an entire article about a phrase that is totally taken out of context. Instead of concluding that this author is an idiot... I will let anyone who reads this decide for him/her self. Perhaps that is what this author should have done.

Sat, 03/20/2010 - 17:09 — Anonymous (not verified)anon@20:57 - Mr. Beck's audience is growing because of the ignorance of the American people. They are an uneducated lot who only listen to or read headlines. The bolder the print, the louder the shout the more they are suckered in. Mr. Beck never really explains any facts behind his rants. He simply rants. This simplicity is perfect for the American eleven year old mentality. Beck's use of the word "social" to instill fear in Americans is simply to imply that any phrase or title that incorporates that word is promoting socialism. If you told Mr. Beck that someone had good social skills he'd accuse them of being a socialist. When he's talking to stupid people he has to say stupid things. The education system in America is at its lowest ever. Filth like Mr. Beck are taking advantage of this, and yes it is for a paycheck. That being said, I'm sure some of the new viewers he has are there for entertainment only. Olbermann and Maddow are his greatest publicity agents. They should stop mentioning his name and driving people to watch his cartoon show.

They bring one or more of "The Books of Mormon", a three volume set of books written in "Old English" like the King James Version of the Bible, which "add to (and) take away from" the Word(s) of God, the Bible, in violation of God's Word(s) in the book of Revelation, the very last book in the New Testament of the Bible.
Their "Books of Mormon" contradict the Bible over and over and over again with all kinds of false interpretations, (mis)representations and outright lies that have nothing whatsoever to truly do with God's Word(s), the Bible; though the Mormons of course fraudulently claim that they do. They also claim that the Books of Mormon supposedly add new and/or additional "Light" to the God's Word(s), the Bible; though the only "light" they "add" to the Bible are nothing but falsehood and fraud mixed with some reiteration of the Bible...

Sun, 03/21/2010 - 00:17 — whaler (not verified)I don't watch Beck much, so I don't have the misfortune of feeling angry about him - a sentiment I would experience with growing intensity the more regularly I would watch his show. After all, he has a market that includes 2 groups of nightly watchers. Those watching the FOX media, hating what he says, and therefore, getting at angry and about what he reflects in the United States today. The other group, liking what he says, and therefore, getting angry about the things he say they should angry about. Either way, it's no fun.
With detachment, holding myself far from sickenss that comes creeping when you know you watched too long, I can only say that Gleck Beck is a msshoganah.
American television watching is in the age of meshoganahs. Those who can get together a good enough meshoganah act will get high ratings, often from views that are mad about them, or conversely, mad with them.

Mr. Cory harshly criticism on someone's paying Tithing is appalling. This is very private and sacred, and true christians should not be criticizing at their fellowbeings' donations.
Obama chose to change his parish/church, and I think Mr. Beck' comments was indirectly referring to Obama's resignation from the Trinity Unitarian Church of Christ. It is debatable whether his decision was based on political convenience, but I in my opinion he was greatly influenced by the public's outcry of Jeremiah Wright's views of social justice.
Not to defend Mr. Beck, I find his outbursts amusing, but is a fact that lots of people change their faiths on a pastor or new pastor's preachings and they are not longer aligned with their beliefs.
Just to clear up on this article, Mr. Cory is not well informed on the purpose of Tihing. In addition to Tithing, mormons donate the proceeds of their fastings to help the poor, this is called fast offerings. The mormons welfare system come from these funds. They are diffrent donations...and sacred.

Sun, 03/21/2010 - 08:07 — Aaron L. (not verified)I heartily agree with Mr. Cory's analysis, but wish to nit-pick just a little. He referred to the "widow's mite" as a charity doled out to the unfortunate from the coffers of the church. It isn't. As stupid as Glenn Beck
Sun, 03/21/2010 - 12:48 — Mario (not verified)As stupid as Glenn Beck might be, he still has lots of bread crumbs to eat before reaching the stupidness of another success stories...
I won't name anybody, but this one is worth reading:
The grandfather earned his success playing cards, some of his opponents paid him with land properties, and some of these turned out to produce oil.
A true American success story, if there ever was.
But the story doesn't end there. The grandchildren of this illustrious ancestor, decided they could gamble to buy all the silver metal on the planet with the help of a few enterprising banks, during the OPEC crisis when Gold was hitting record prices.
Turned out that the the kids and all the banks went bankrupt in this venture.
I don't know what turns the stupids into bright people the moment they get their hands on money, but it looks like these fat cats can even make others as stupid as themselves just by contagion.
I don't know why nobody goes after the rich = smart myth in this country, because example abounds of silly and stupid rich people, unable to do anything worthwhile with their fortune.
What I mean, this is a group like any other one, with smart and dumb people like everything else. And for that reason, being run by just a few oligarchs, should frighten these few oligarchs themselves. No stability will ever result from letting a smaller and smaller group get more and more power over everybody else.
But when you have stupid (or psychopatic) people who have nothing to lose, controlling every aspect of entire industries, like it is presently the case, it's rather difficult to fight stupid people without having to become as stupid as them, to be effective and get any results, many people don't want to pay that price...
But, here's an example:
In a certain country, or in certain countries, in middle east, far east, or was it in Russia, at a certain time, the rules of succession for the throne (when the King dies), were ambiguous and to work around the problem caused by these ambiguities, the heir to the throne had to kill all his brothers as young as possible. And he could not do that without the help of his mother.
So the country was run afterwards by the worst subject in the kingdom...
That's what America is facing. This is what is lurking it's ugly head when the stupid GOP and Sarah Palin are using Rupert Murdoch's and his friends' media to convey their lies over and over.
And why is their following growing? Because there are no other sources of information. They own everything.

Most Fox viewers don't know Rupert isn't American. Homer is more than cartoon at FOX , he's their demographic. High school graduate? Maybe, a trade school? Blue collar for sure. Responds to issues very similar to Homer, drunken angry reaction, usually based on not understanding the situation completely. One word or 2 word names for most of their shows... 24 (just incase you forgot how many hours in a day) family guy (insensitivity to everything) American Dad (perversion baked in apple pie) Prison Break (how their world looks to them) I could on forever. FOX network is the bastion and farm for the stupid. If FOX news went to cartoon format...none of their viewers would notice the difference.

Tue, 03/23/2010 - 17:18 — Gentile in Mormonland (not verified)I am a non-Mormon who has attended a Mormon church regularly for the last year. They do indeed hate other religions and openly ridicule them. I have quit attending their services because the Sunday school teacher began publicly threatening my soul to eternal damnation in Hell if I did not join the church! As to tithing, it is used for the construction of Mormon temples, not for charity. And regarding Glenn Beck, if there were not a hundred other reasons not to join the Mormon church, the fact that he is a member would be reason enough.
