Helen Thomas, Under Siege About Israel Comments, Retires

Washington — Helen Thomas, the longest serving White House correspondent, retired Monday after comments she made about Israel over the weekend drew condemnation from both the White House and the White House Correspondents Association.

Hearst News Service announced Thomas's retirement in a news story transmitted Monday morning. The story said her retirement was immediate.

"I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians," the story quote Thomas as saying. "They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.’’

Thomas will mark her 90th birthday on Aug. 4.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that Thomas's comments, in which she said Jews should leave Israel and return to Europe, were reprehensible. The White House Correspondents Association called them indefensible.

The association's board also said it was reconsidering Thomas’s special seat in the front row of the White House briefing room.

"I think those remarks were offensive and reprehensible," Gibbs said when asked about her comments at Monday’s press briefing.

"I think she should and has apologized. Because, obviously, those remarks …do not reflect, certainly, the opinion of, I assume, most of the people in here and certainly not of the administration."

Thomas did not attend Monday morning's briefing, which feaetured Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the administration's point man on the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Thomas was asked about Israel on May 27. The video was recorded by the website RabbiLive.com on the day the White House held a Jewish Heritage event. The video was released Friday.

"Any comments on Israel," an offscreen voice asks Thomas.

“Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine,” Thomas says.

“Where should they go?” the offscreen voice asks.

She responds that they should go home to Germany, Poland or the United States.

After a special meeting Monday, the correspondents’ association board issued a statement condemning Thomas’s comments.

“Helen Thomas' comments were indefensible and the White House Correspondents Association board firmly dissociates itself from them,” the group said.

"Many in our profession who have known Helen for years were saddened by the comments, which were especially unfortunate in light of her role as a trail blazer on the White House beat.

“While Helen has not been a member of the WHCA for many years, her special status in the briefing room has helped solidify her as the dean of the White House press corps so we feel the need to speak out strongly on this matter.

“We want to emphasize that the role of the WHCA is to represent the White House press corps in its dealings with the White House on coverage-related issues. We do not police the speech of our members or colleagues. We are not involved at all in issuing White House credentials, that is the purview of the White House itself.

“But the incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room. That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board. We are actively seeking input from our association members on this important matter, and we have scheduled a special meeting of the WHCA board on Thursday to decide on the seating issue.”

We should send her a thank you for her principled candor over the years. Her seat in the WH briefing room will be taken by a stenographer, a corporate-administration sycophant. I'd like to see a campaign for a full page advertisement in the NY Times, Washington Post thanking her for her service.



This shows how impossible it

This shows how impossible it is to criticize Israel or the right wing Zionists in the US. It has become the third rail for anyone in a prominent position to speak the truth about the monstrous extremists in charge of not only Israel, but who have infiltrated every level of media, politics and the White House itself.

Helen has been asking tough questions for years and never really got the answers or the press she deserved. What she said was wrong. Israelis shouldn't have to go anywhere...but neither should Arab Israeli or Palestinian refugees.

Intemperate is an extremely polite designation for what she said. She suggested the Jews 'go back home' to countries that murdered millions of them without a second thought within living memory (maybe not yours or mine but hers and my parents, for example).

Helen Thomas says Israelis should go "home" and she loses her job and her seat in the White House press room. Israeli heads of state have decided it's okay to force Palestinians out of their homes (and homeland) and those same heads of state are welcomed to the White House. Guess who was being condemned on National Public Radio just moments ago. When will this manufactured outrage against ill-mannered folk like Thomas subside enough for us to take account of the real outrages perpetrated by homicidal Israelis?

The Arab states could have solved the Palestinian "problem" 60-plus years ago by working with Israel. Instead, they prefer to let Palestinian's suffer to distract the "Arab street" from their own authoritarian and often brutal practices. Except for Egypt and Jordan, all of the surrounding Arab states are still technically at war with Israel.

Helen's choice of words was unwise. Be that as it may, she has a right to her opinions and the first amendment as well. While I do not agree with sending Jews back to their origins, I think it is high time the Zionist mentality was a thing of the past. She could have made her comment anywhere in the world but in the United States and Israel, two countries whose leaders have often said outlandish things and then attempted to act on them.

After reading the article and all of the comments what I've noticed is that nobody seemed to notice that weather Helen Thomas was right or wrong in her assertion, the Zionist choke hold on America and the White House tightens its grip. There are no recordings or primary sources to support your claim that they were told to leave so they could return after the Arab armies were victorious. Of course, if you know of any, please cite them.

I heard this story early this morning and sent Helen off an email right away, thanking her for all of her honesty over the years. I cannot believe that the flipping Tea Baggers and Rush Limbaugh can call President Obama every name in the book, and Helen Thomas cannot express an opinion without losing her job. Frankly I totally agree with her, and if I had been an adult when the state of Israel was created, I would have voted against it. It's unbelievable that a religion should be granted real estate that belonged to people who had lived on that land for thousands of years. Not only was the original act unfair and brutal, but for the very people who had suffered displacement and loss of wealth, to chase another people off the same way, with what they could carry, to become refugees, and then to inflict occupation,oppression,starvation, imprisonment, torture, and murder on them, has been outrageous. The topper is of course that American tax dollars fund this endless wrong, and NOT so some wretched group of brutalized people would have a homeland, but so the United States would have an ally in the OIL rich Middle East. It's all been a lie, and it would be a hell of a lot better world if the Israeli's, that mythical nation, WOULD just go home. Wouldn't Native Americans have preferred that Europeans would just go home rather than slaughtering them and herding them into ghettos, American style, known as Reservations?

I have to laugh at the post which said that the "Jews are back where they came from" Well, not really. The Levant region was under tillage some 6000 b.c. The Israelites themselves, in their ancient writing, tell of taking land "God promised them" or some such bullwhack. This may have happened about 2000 bc or so. So, there were people in Palestine before the Israelites arrived. The Israelites came as conquerors. So where DO they belong? Maybe as Helen said, those places ares as good as any to a people with a truly homeless legacy.

Go watch or listen to or read Amy Goodman's coverage of this topic on today's Democracy Now. She points out in an interview with an advocate for Thomas that Helen Thomas did not say Jews should go to Israel, she named Poland, Germany, and the USA.

I like Helen Thomas, but those remarks are every bit as outrageous as those of Israeli politicians who claim that Palestinians can go live anywhere they want in the whole Arab world.

Would you advocate the forceful removal of Jewish Israelis of any ethnic background from the currently recognized borders of Israel (that is, NOT including Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, etc)?

Helen Thomas' remarks can be interpreted a number of ways, including that she was advocating all Ashkenazi Jews leave Israel and settle in two countries that practiced genocide on them or it could be that she was only expressing her wish that Jewish settlers in the Occupied Territories leave for Israel, and other countries.

It leaves a lot to interpretation, so if you're going to defend her remarks you owe it to other readers to explain how you interpret those remarks and what you would advocate yourself.

Even if one thinks that

Even if one thinks that foisting the creation of Israel on the Palestinians in 1948 was a mistake, telling hundreds of thousands of people who were born in the middle east that they now have to go to some countries in Europe because their ancestry is European would be idiotic and immoral.

I agree that Americans and their elected governments have been way too tolerant of the Israeli occupation and other abuses, but Helen was foolish to imply that all Jews should leave that part of the world.

But did she really mean it? After listening to her off-the-cuff comments, I'm not sure whether she really thinks so, or whether she uttered a sloppy exaggeration and really thinks that Israel should get out of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. So if I were Helen's boss, I wouldn't fire her.

What’s most disturbing about the on-going gang-rape of Helen Thomas is not just the breadth of the participation in the exercise of her vilification but the even broader passive acceptance, if not condoning, of her abuse.  Isn’t the loss of her professional credentials and access to the public sufficient for the mad-dogs of conformity?
 
Ms Thomas expressed a point of view shared by millions of victimized and oppressed peoples.  Of course the oppressors and persecutors don’t what to hear it.  Perhaps that is one reason they should, more often.  A fair and reasonable culture would welcome her expression of her perspective, unpopular though it be with some.

I don't believe American (or French or Russian or Argentine, etc) Jews should have a 'right of return' either. It's silly that I, who was born in California and can't trace my roots back further than my great-grandparents in Belarus and Ukraine should be more entitled to live in East Jerusalem than someone who was born there.

And in the same spirit, it's silly to suggest that a Jewish person born and raised in Tel Aviv, growing up in a middle eastern culture speaking Hebrew, should leave because of something that happened 30 years before she was born. Perhaps Thomas was not suggesting that, but I think it takes a tortured reading of her remarks and her subsequent apology to believe that.
