Hitler, Human Will and Reality

by: Dallas Darling, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

In “The Anatomy Of Human Destructiveness,” Erich Fromm writes that Hitler himself considered his greatest asset to be his unbending will. The reason I mention this is on May 10, 1940, Adolf Hitler ordered the invasion of Western Europe. After remilitarizing the Rhineland, absorbing Austria, annexing the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia through a plebiscite, and after sweeping through Poland in just 27 days, Hitler issued the order for the domination of Western Europe. Even with 122 infantry divisions, 3,500 tanks, and 5000 warplanes, Hitler still attributed his expansionist efforts to his will.

Psychologists claim the will is the human faculty responsible for choice and voluntary actions. It is also the part of us that initiates certain behaviors and enables one to complete specific tasks. In ethics, there is a moral responsibility to the will, usually determined by the outcome or consequences of an action or completed task. There also are many types of human will, such as the rational and irrational wills, the iron and weak wills, effective and defective wills, merciful and cruel wills, and intelligent and stupefied wills.

Fromm believed that at first glance, Hitler indeed seemed like someone with extraordinary willpower. But Fromm likened Hitler to a strong-willed six-year old who was unable to make compromises and threw tantrums when frustrated. He believed individuals, such as Hitler, who decided a course and pursued it with unwavering determination even in the midst of defeat and disaster, like the Battle of Britain and then Stalingrad, had a defective sense of reality. It was Hitler’s will that was the ultimate reality. Anything else was unreal.

Because of this, Hitler held superficial beliefs about Europe. He believed someday Britain and France would join his cause to establish a Third Reich. He also had little knowledge of the United States. Hitler thought America was filled with too many conflicts and would dare not enter a war. In truth, his will lacked reality and objectivity. Like other misguided leaders of the past, Hitler selectively picked reports that fitted with his own preconceived ideas about the world. He paid no attention to contradictory news or reports.

The blending of Hitler’s defective will with his defective sense of reality led Germany on a course toward catastrophe. As Fromm writes, Hitler was a gambler, gambling with the lives of Germans. It was not his strong-will that made him appear successful, but simply a lust for destructive power, even if it meant complete annihilation for him and his nation. Despite all of this, though, he was sane enough to pursue his aims purposefully. Hitler and Germany were victorious and triumphant, at least for a while.

But according to Fromm, the intensely destructive leader, and a nation that follows, will show a front of kindliness, courtesy, love of family, of children, and of animals. They will speak of grandiose ideals, like freedom, liberty, justice, and equality. It is naïve to believe a destructive man and nation is easily recognizable, for they are not. Hitler was no genius, and his talents were not unique. Neither was Germany superior. What was unique was the sociopolitical situation in which both Hitler and Germany could rise.

If there are hundreds of Hitlers among us who would come forth if their historical hour arrived, as Fromm believed, then are there dozens of secular and holy Reichs longing to follow such a leader and reign supreme by dominating the world? Sixty years later, thinking back to the initial phase of the Global War on Terror that included the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, and when considering the ongoing militarization of the Middle East and parts of Asia, this question must be asked and reflected upon.

Remember when it was common to hear how then-President George W. Bush’s greatest character trait was his will and decisiveness. Actually, “The will of the United States cannot be shaken by 9-11 and suicide bombers…” was one of his favorite quotes too. But Bush’s will, and America’s, have met reality in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Not only did he gamble with tens of thousands of American lives, but also with millions of lives in the Middle East and Asia.

Sadly, and like Adolf Hitler, did George W. Bush and his advisors confuse their collective will with a passion to control and dominate the world? Was it this that relentlessly drove them to seek and impose their own realizations onto others? And like Adolf Hitler (and many of us), once George W. Bush decided to pursue a course of action, did he become so determined to complete the task that he disregarded self-reflection and self-correction?

It is obvious the imposed realizations of the Global War on Terror have turned out to be fatal and catastrophic. But then seldom do the imperial wills of leaders, and nations that follow them, represent, let alone better, the social, political and economic realities around the globe. Other than a few German and American subversives, and the pacifist and war-resisting naysayers - which every republic has, it seems iron-wills, backed only by militarism and war, will endeavor to be triumphant.

From the Reichstag Fire to the attack on the Pentagon, from the Fatherland to Homeland Security, from blitzkrieg to Rapid Reactionary Forces, from the Ministry of Truth to the U.S. Military-Corporate Media, from the Enabling Acts to Executive Privilege, from the Third Reich to American Exceptionalism, when will irrational, defective, stupefied, and cruel wills be rejected? For Germany, and on this day in 1940, it was already too late to recognize Hitler’s true faces - the faces, that is, of hatred, destructiveness, and a lust for world domination. Is it too late for the United States?

What "liberals" like Dallas

What "liberals" like Dallas Darling refuse to face, is that these psychopathic leaders WANT chaos. They want the United States to be brought down. And they are doing all that they're perpetrating knowing EXACTLY what they're doing, using the chaos and destruction of the U.S. to bring in world government and the "New World Order (NWO)" that they've talked about bringing into existence for decades. One-world government will be presented as the solution for all of the engineered chaos that these insane people are manufacturing, as the only solution, and our only salvation, from the madness they created by design in the first place, for a long, long time.

But, because of the people who aren't talked about in this article, though they are an intrinsic and inseparable part of what happened in Germany in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, the average German people who went along with Hitler's engineered chaos, what the psychopaths are intentionally causing and bringing about, and are manipulating the people to accept, is enabled by the majority of all sides of the political spectrum and false paradigms that go along with it. And the psychopaths have learned from countless years of practice how to manipulate the masses for that very desired effect, bending them expertly to their evil will, again and again...

...Yet, otherwise

...Yet, otherwise "intelligent" people like the author of this article refuse to face that such is PRECISELY what is going on; and so they skirt around the issue(s), inadvertently aiding and abetting the mass manufactured chaos and its desired outcome(s); always writing off the reality as being "too cynical", "too extreme" and "too conspiratorial", etc., to be true. They don't want to be labeled by the majority of the masses who will NEVER face what is really transpiring, as "conspiracy theorists", "extremists" and "exaggerators", etc.; so they will intentionally keep right on failing to fully address the matter and fulfill their duty(ies) to awaken the people to stop the madness.

Or, perhaps they say to themselves that at least they are getting people to think, which I do give them kudos for; but they fail to recognize that we don't have time for skirting the issues, putting off or refusing to fully address them, and/or shirking the responsibility and obligation to tell it exactly as it is because the situation IS extremely dire, to the extent that if we don't awaken a majority of the masses to just how grave the situation is, like the people of Germany not so long ago, and millions of others, we are bringing upon ourselves our own annihilation as sure as those who did so before us brought it upon themselves. What is it going to be today, people?

We have lost a free press;

We have lost a free press; the secret ballot; the right to be free from unwarranted search and seizure; and on and on...... people are allowed to carry weapons of war on their shoulders when having a mass march... the private contractor army is at least as big as the national army in Iraq and Afghanistan; the right has a major propaganda machine in FOX noise; right wingers say the government is running corporations, instead of the other way around....and any voice that brings up these and other changes in our national life is a voice crying in the wilderness....drowned out by the people who value authoritarian rule....
.....and some of us cry to see our country travel the route of Hitler's Germany......

As long as imbeciles are

As long as imbeciles are able to run and be elected to the highest office in the land, "willful" people such as "dubya" and Cheney will be able to force their will on others. The cowards in Congress who refused to stand up and oppose them when they knew in their hearts that what was being foisted on America was criminal, hopefully, will be addressed come November '10. Sanity MUST speak truth, no matter how painful, to those in power. The problem is and will continue to be, their ability to rewrite law to absolve themselves of any responsibility. Ignorance has become the ICON of the "common man", the "Joe the Plumber's" of the world and all those "Pitbulls with lipstick". They deplore intellectuals and anyone who actually thinks about something for more that 5 minutes before running off at the mouth ala palin, Limbaugh and Beck. These are the Lord Hawhaws and Tokyo Roses of today and should be shown up for what they are, Enemies of the State.

I'm not sure about this

I'm not sure about this part:

"...once George W. Bush decided to pursue a course of action, did he become so determined to complete the task that he disregarded self-reflection and self-correction?"

There's really no evidence that Bush (or Hitler, or Cheney, or Rumsfeld, etc. etc.) ever HAD the capability to self-reflect or self-correct. Remember members of the Bush administration taunting "reality-based" people while claiming they were going to create the "new reality." Of course as is typically the case, historically speaking, they were proven to be decisively and tragically out of their league. However, they never stopped to really analyze that possibility in advance, and therein lies the true danger. Like the article says, there are many groups waiting for a leader to direct them toward world conquest, thus establishing their ideology as "supreme." Then, only if things get bad enough (e.g., the end and aftermath of WWII), at that point reflection is forced on them in a way that even the most close-minded, self-righteous, and hypocritical of ideologues can't miss because they are fully enveloped by the tragedy.

The Reichstag fire was

The Reichstag fire was started by the Nazis.

I do not believe the Pentagon was attacked by the Bushites.

The author asks: "when will

The author asks: "when will irrational, defective, stupefied, and cruel wills be rejected".
Well, don't hold your breath, in fact, breath
deeply, breath real deeply, and steel yourself
for a fight with these neo nazi bastards. Rupert and company are planning to use them
big time and soon.

Megalomaniacs like Hitler,

Megalomaniacs like Hitler, Bush and Stalin possess an unwavering conviction of their infallibility and a tendency to never consider an opposing view. You can see it in Palin, Beck and Limbaugh--a certainty that viewing an issue from various perspectives is a sign of weakness. Add to that the conviction that their "people" i.e., their race, class and culture is superior to any in history. Clearly Bush clung to this belief, never having mingled with minorities or members of the working class except as boss or superior. It's an arrogance that's nurtured from birth and reinforced by all friends, associates and relatives. What is so creepy now is that this faction of society has such an enormous amount of leverage in media and business, hence controlling politics and owning so many elected representatives. Their sycophantic followers include a large number of unsophisticated minions who are both paranoid and heavily armed. As resources dwindle and today's high level of consumption starts to decline, it's possible that local "warlords" could emerge to take what they feel is theirs by birthright and perpetrate true terror to those they perceive as "enemies." This will include anyone who questions their motives and defends human rights as spelled out in the Constitution.

Extremely interesting

Extremely interesting article. What is will and reality and how should the two be conjoined? I am of the opinion that the U.S. has replaced Hitler's will and Nazism in the sense of trying to dominate the world. It is trying to globally spread market economies and selfish, militaristic values. Although somewhat different from Hitler and Nazism, the principle to control the world is still the same. The result is also similar...more war, more war, and more war.

Alice Miller, in her book

Alice Miller, in her book "For your own good: The Roots of Violence in Child Rearing" looks in some detail at the psychological dynamic between Hitler and the German people, and shows clearly that as children are treated so Nation States behave.

The earlier work of James W Prescott "BODY PLEASURE AND THE ORIGINS OF VIOLENCE" published in 1975 supports Millers work, as does recent learnings in Neuroscience and infant brain development.

Both are work searching out, and studying.

That age old admonition 'spare the rod, spoil the child' came from the so called cradle of democracy, Greece... and is more common than rare in practice, even to day.

Hitler's, Bushs, Obamas etc etc CANNOT exist without mass compliance, and that compliance cannot exist or emerge where children are truly honoured as the people they are.

Corneilius, I'm thinking

Corneilius, I'm thinking you're from the UK, or Canada at least, since you spell it "honour" . . . Good to read someone pointing out the obvious about our violent culture, even if the US is taking 30-40 extra years to figure it out . . . but Bushes and Obamas can't do anything, will or no; the Pentagon - based solely on dominance via violence, runs the show here. While we raise the next generation to be civilized, some will end up sacrificing themselves, as Ghandi did. Remember what he said, tho': First they laugh at you, then they attack you, then you win.
