In a private meeting, House Democrats voted on a nonbinding resolution this morning to reject President Obama's tax deal in its current form.

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon). Talking Points Memo said that a House aide called the resolution "a vote of no confidence" in the package.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will reportedly not bring the tax deal up for a floor vote, according to a report published Thursday in the Huffington Post. Pelosi will abide by her caucus' rejection of the deal and will require that changes be made to the plan before she introduces it for a vote in the House.

In an interview with the HuffingtonPost, DeFazio said, “[Pelosi] was there, she heard the arguments, and I don't believe that she is at all resistant to our position. She was not happy with the package as negotiated.”

In a statement following the caucus vote, Pelosi said, "We will continue discussions with the President and our Democrat and Republican colleagues in the days ahead to improve the proposal before it comes to the House floor for a vote."

"Democratic priorities remain clear: to provide a tax cut for working families, to create jobs and economic growth, to assist millions of our fellow Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and to do this in a fiscally sound way," she added.

According to CNN, the vote comes after Vice President Biden told House Democrats that the deal would not go through if any new changes were introduced. President Obama also urged Congress to pass the bill in a press conference earlier this week, stating that he did not want middle-class American families to become collateral damage for the sake of politics.

"If I have to choose between having a protracted political battle on the one hand but those folks being hurt, or helping those folks and continuing to fight this political battle over the next two years, I will choose the latter," he said at the time.

The vote was "nearly unanimous," DeFazio told ABC's "Top Line" webcast, according to The Hill. Given a choice of "take it or leave it," DeFazio said, "We just said 'leave it.'"

As time goes on, I am more

As time goes on, I am more and more appalled at the President that I worked to elect - including financial support. I am no genius, but, it seems to me if Obama had shifted the focus to Republicans, who are only interested in passing legislation to benefit the rich, to their lack of concern for the middle class / main street... They could care less about maintaining the tax rate for poor and middle class, followed up by the contempt they have for the long term unemployed. If the President and the rest of the Dems stayed on this message (like the opposition does with everything), the Republican hypocrites would have dropped like a house of cards!!!! By the bye, what happened to the concern about the deficit, Repugs?

Why didn't Obama try this? You tell me!

I have completely lost faith in the man! If he wasn't black, he could switch parties and win a second term! The reason that isn't an option is the color of his skin! I have come to the conclusion that this game is completely rigged! Third party, anyone?

Obummer told congressional

Obummer told congressional Democrats to cave on tax cuts and accept his "deal" or the economy will be crushed. WTF is that? Holy sh#t! They are gutting SS, adding to the deficit and warning that the economy will be crushed?!! Smells like Bin Laden.

Reaganomics voodoo economy a

Reaganomics voodoo economy a success ,even a republican zombie orchestrating it

Proud to be an Oregonian

Proud to be an Oregonian with the resistance my reps are showing to Obama's capitulation.

Though I never bought into the Obamamania, it was clear he was a centrist and I think we need someone more progressive, it's still SHOCKING to see how weak he's been since in office.

Nothing more than status quo on wars, banks, taxes, human rights. Uh...think you ran on the camapaign of "change", dude.

Well it's about time that

Well it's about time that the Democrats started fighting the Repubs and supporting their own party's President and the campaign promises that they TOO endorsed during his election campaign.
Maybe this is what Obama was aiming for all along?

I would rather pay extra

I would rather pay extra taxes than have the tax relief for the very rich continued. The Republicans won't vote against extending unemployment benefits- that would be suicidal, so why negotiate for something that you'd get anyway? Obama is neither a leader nor a negotiator. He is a one term president.

"Nothing changes if nothing

"Nothing changes if nothing changes."

Obama is a Republican in sheep's clothing as he too, is indebted to the corporate interests, as well as to the racist assassins currently at bay.

The Dems finally stood up to the Republican blackmailing kidnappers, who do not give a damn about anybody but themselves and their plutocrat benefactors.

The time is now, for all of the rest of to stand up, and say, "I am as mad as hell, and I am not taking IT anymore!!"

"Kick the football, Charlie

"Kick the football, Charlie Brown!"

It's time for a third party folks - The Progressive Party. - Amen.

I expect Vic to post an

I expect Vic to post an ignorant rant about the president, but the rest of you need to take your heads out of wherever you stuck them! If the Dems in congress even knew what a spine was, it would never have come to this. Now, they have the unbelievable gall to complain about Obama trying to make something out of the mess that their fecklessness and cowardice caused in the first place? I'm pretty sure that they knew about these tax rates and all before this month began, and they sat on their hands and let the situation get to this. The only thing more amazing than their gall in complaining about the mess they caused is the effrontery of so many "progressives," many of whom post here, are actually buying their line of BS!

I used to wonder at how so many people can be fooled into thinking that giving away the country's money is going to help with the Bush deficits, but seeing how so many of you are letting those spineless weasels blame blame Obama for the fact that they didn't have the stones to do anything about taxes and unemployment when they had a huge majority, I'm starting to see how such things happen. I agree with what they suddenly discovered they want to do, but I'm not going to agree with their assertion that it's not their fault that they never tried to do it before now. That's just stupid!

I echo the sentiments of

I echo the sentiments of "Proud to be an Oregonian." I voted for DeFazio when he first ran over twenty years ago, and he has largely delivered on our trust. Atta boy, Pete; keep 'em coming.

Kudos to the Congressional

Kudos to the Congressional Democrats who had the cajones to stand up and say NO to a bad deal. The Obama we see now on TV not only going along with the lopsided "compromise" of a tax deal, but defending it and saying the progressive base opposes it because they don't understand is NOT the same person I voted for. I voted for the sharp, bold, progressive Obama. Not the wishy-washy, borderline Republican Obama. Maybe it will take his own party standing up to him to make him realize he has a choice to make- side with his own party and the people who elected him to office, or side with the very same people who have been giving him hell since the second he took office and will continue calling him a "socialist" no matter what he does.

Obama is both politically

Obama is both politically and philosophically inept on this (and others) issue. Philosophically it makes no sense to continue tax cuts for the wealthy, that have never proved (especially in recent history) to create jobs.

Politically he is so dense - a gift horse is staring him in the face; call their bluff and lets see what the republicans do when 98% of the country blames THEM for holding their tax cuts hostage in the interest of giving more cash to those who least need it.

I like the Larry Summers

I like the Larry Summers rant that if this tax "deal" isn't passed, that a "double-dip" recession is eminent. Geez, the ultimate banker is using the ol' Bush extortion and threats tactic to gain congressional "support" for their obviously written for them by them legislation.

Remember how Congress had to pass the banking bailout because without it, the economy would have collapsed, or so the Treasury Secretary warned/threatened? Sound familiar or like a broken record?

as the nation shows no

as the nation shows no fiscal restraint , the world watches, and they wonder about the dollar and so they raise the price of oil,the little guy will pay if the over the top rich don't pay up some tax dollars

Here, here! Peter's my

Here, here! Peter's my congressman. I'm very happy and proud of him right now.

I was thrilled to do a show at his recent rally in Coos Bay, OR and I'm so glad he won re-election. I'm sure he would credit my show as the turning point. Just kidding, Congressman DeFazio.

Meanwhile…as politicians

Meanwhile…as politicians act out political theater before they capitulate to the immoral demands of the aristocracy lining their pockets and bolstering their privilege…2 million American workers and their families face a Christmas season full of uncertainty and resentment.
Merry Christmas from the ruling class. You don't mean squat. Love and Kisses. Your One Party Country.

I think it's about time that

I think it's about time that American citizens do a little 'toughing up'. Every time they (O & Congress) want something THEIR way; we get the fear mongering just like ole' bushie times (hehehe). Are we a nation of such cowards and insecurity that we can't endure some rough times for the sake of better more security and equal times?

This is my Rep. and I am so

This is my Rep. and I am so very proud of DeFazio. This man over the years has truly set a fine example of true representation of the people.

His town hall meetings are invigorating and productive and I'm so pleased he is standing up to this critters in Congress.

let the whole tax cut

let the whole tax cut expire.

Cuts made later will be much smaller.

LETS CUT THE MILITARY BY 20% AND CUT OFF ALL SECURITY CONTRACTORS IN FOREIN COUNTRYS.

WE DO STILL HAVE OUR MILITARY FOR THAT.

Why? DEM ill have Done

Why? DEM ill have Done NOTHING, yet!
