Further complicating peace talks as White House envoy George Mitchell arrives in Israel today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Barack Obama's call for a building halt in East Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected a call by US President Barack Obama to halt new construction in East Jerusalem, his aides confirmed Thursday. The rejection, which was delivered privately over the weekend, appeared likely to further complicate American efforts to broker a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

Both sides lay claim to the holy city, and Israel does not consider building there to be a settlement activity. The international community does not view East Jerusalem as legally Israel's.

Israel's announcement last month of a plan to construct 1,600 new homes in East Jerusalem – which Israel seized from Jordan in the 1967 war – ruffled visiting US Vice President Joe Biden and threw planned peace talks off track. Obama’s Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, was set to touch down in Israel later today to try to reanimate them, The Associated Press reports.

Proposals [in past negotiations] have included a release of some of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and the removal of some of the roadblocks hindering the movement of Palestinian people and goods in the West Bank.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat called the Netanyahu position "very unfortunate" and said he hoped the US "will be able to convince the Israeli government to give peace a chance by halting settlement construction in east Jerusalem and elsewhere."

Mr. Netanyahu late last year agreed to a temporary freeze on settlements in the West Bank, hoping to kick-start talks with the Palestinians, and last month polls showed half of Israel supports that – in addition to a freeze in Jerusalem. Those results went against the prime minister’s claim of broad support for building in the eastern part of the capital, says The Christian Science Monitor.

Also Thursday, in a letter to the chair of a group representing American Jewish organizations, Obama said any tension that has been created between Israel and the US will be resolved, reports The Jerusalem Post.

In a letter from Obama to Alan Solow, Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, the President wrote that his administration is committed to "special relationship with Israel and that will not change.

"Our countries are bound together by shared values, deep and interwoven connections, and mutual interests," he added. "Many of the same forces that threaten Israel also threaten the United States and our efforts to secure peace and stability in the Middle East. Our alliance with Israel serves our national security interests.”

But on Wednesday, US National Security Advisor James Jones said he was “disappointed” that Israelis and Palestinians have not made progress in peace talks, and that it was time “to put an end to excuses.”

Reiterating the White House’s support for a two-state solution, he also said that peace in the region – particularly between Israel and Syria – would help keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons, reports Israel’s Ynet News. Mr. Jones said the settlement conflict, however, was allowing Iran to divert attention from its nuclear program, Reuters reported.

Mr. Jones also said that "in our pursuit of a two-state solution, we recognize that peace must be made by the parties and cannot be imposed from the outside." However, a recent poll showed that Palestinian support for a two-state solution is declining as Israel continues building in East Jerusalem, the Monitor reported last month.

I agree with Netanyahu.

I agree with Netanyahu. After what the Arabs have done to the Jews over the centuries, I see no point in negotiating any further. For the last 60 years, no matter what Israel offered or did, it was never enough. They meet with Arafat, they get intifadas. They pull out of Gaza, they get rockets. They pull out of Lebanon, they get attacks.

The "poor" Palestinians receive tens of million of dollars from us, from Europe, from Arab countries, and they are still a corrupt mess. While their unemployment skyrocketed, Arafat's widow ended up with a billion dollars. The media overlooks the civil war between Hamas and the PLO--2,000 dead so far--and hardly mentions Muslim violence against Christians. They should stop blaming Israel for all the problems and solve it themselves.

sharonsj: pathetic-- to

sharonsj: pathetic-- to believe you would involve a rewriting of history.....If you want to punish somebody for poor treatment 0f Jews, try Europe. the Arabs, the Palestinians are overwhelmingly treated poorly by Israel and the USA.

Horrible reporting. No

Horrible reporting. No mention that the building violates a UN security council resolution, and is opposed by every other nation on earth, not just Obama.

sharonsj is faking. israel

sharonsj is faking. israel has offered nothing after stealing the land Palestine and expelling or killing the Palestinians. You "pulled out of Gaza" to build twice as much in the West Bank and tobe able to invade and destroy Gaza.
Why on earth should you be in Lebanon at all?
Check it out-Israel is rich, overloaded with weapons, unwilling to talk to its "enemies" and full of hatred for anyone but their own, blaming everyone else for being antisemitic. Get real. Try some fairness and legality.

I completely agree with

I completely agree with rosemary. And to top it off the AIPAC Zionist Lobby is one of the most powerful lobbies for Israel in America plus they have many spies here who are stealing our secrets. They are now busy trying to get us into war with Iran but I certainly hope Obama doesn't fall for their treachery. I have also been reading about their influence in getting us to go to war with Iraq. Between them and Cheney they are traitors to our Country

Besides all that we have been donating millions of dollars and arms to Israel since they became a Democratic Nation. So much for Democracy.

I am not anti-Semitic, there are many good Jews who are fighting for peace but I am against the Zionists.

the comments by sharonsj are

the comments by sharonsj are indicative of the fact that some people refuse to see the facts no matter how they are put. the problem is that the u.s and israel have been bed fellows for way to long and obama and his administration have to finally file for divorce. this is the only way to make israel see that the people of the world are sick to death of the way israel carries on. they are like a little bully who has his big brother to back him up, so they stamp around creating trouble and acting with impunity and belligerence. for the peace process to be activated america has to shake the little brother and tell them to grow up and that they wont be backing them up any longer.

The Palestinians need better

The Palestinians need better leadership, or just leadership, period. A poll? We negotiating with speculations about what Palestinian opinion is? Who are the Palestinians represented by? As far as I can see, a bunch of militant, uncompromising fanatics who refuse to recognize Israel as a nation, randomly fire away, and are overt antisemites, for the most part, on the internet. I was amazed to read on another forum, their attempts to blame even an antisemitic incidents on "the Jews" -- without even seeing that it was antisemitic. Some of them sound like Nazis. And, there is a historical relationship with that group, insofar as the Middle East is concerned. Now why, after they avowed hatred and vengeance to Israel, should Israel do what it comparable to the United States saying, "ok, you can have Queens and Statan Island!"? ("And just be sure not to fire at Manhattan or send any suicide bombers into the Bronx, please?") And listening to people talk as if we have the right to offer that and insist for that, on the part of another nation? The Palestinians need a consistently rational leadership with a demonstrated base of support from the people, with overt behavior over time, showing that they truly recognize Israel and want peace. I've never seen that. With the exception of some obvious peace advocates, I just see a lot of hatred. President Obama is out there talking to Netanyahu. Who is speaking for the Palestinians? A polling outfit? This is ridiculous.

Why is there this tendency

Why is there this tendency to divide Jews into "good Jews" and "bad Jews"? It reminds me of white racism in the U.S. where there "good blacks" and "bad blacks." Funny how those leftists, ready to *stand up and confront racism and bigotry" whereever it is, don't see that.

Let me explain then to you

Let me explain then to you Anonymous at Fri, 04/23/2010 - 16:51 —
"Good Jews" are those who are AGAINST building illegal settlements and "bad Jews" are those who are FOR building illegal settlements.
I hope this explenation is easy enough for you to understand.

What the US should do is

What the US should do is become a truly even-handed arbiter in the mideast and urge Israel to conform to international law and Geneva Conventions, an obligation it agreed to when it joined the UN.

How can the US be seen as

How can the US be seen as the "honest broker" when VP Biden and Sen Mitchell repeatedly say that the Israel/US friendship is "indivisible"?
What Pres Obama and Sec Clinton should do to show that are non-partisan and really mean business is to talk to Hamas. Perhaps they could persuade them to end their resistance in return for forcing Israel to comply with UN resolutions, International Law and withdraw from the illegally occupied West Bank to the 1967 borders.
Only then will there be any chance of ending the impasse. Unless, of course, it is in certain people's interests to keep the pot simmering.
