Jim Hightower | Republicans Out of Touch as Middle Class Sinks

by: Jim Hightower, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

American politics is a hoot! Where else can raw ignorance rise to such high places -- and then flaunt itself shamelessly for all to see?

For example, who needs Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien for comic relief, when we've got Andre Bauer? He's the Lieutenant governor of South Carolina (a state, by the way, that really is a comer on the political comedy circuit -- especially after Gov. Mark Sanford's madcap schtick last year involving his disappearance, the Appalachian Trail and an Argentine mistress.

But Sanford is leaving office, and Bauer, who is now a Republican contender for governor, is the state's new star joker. He had 'em rolling in the aisles recently when he did a wild, slapstick routine on food stamps at a town hall meeting. Andre proclaimed that much of his political thinking was shaped by his grandmother and that he had learned a valuable lesson from her.

"She told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why?" he asked, pausing for comedic effect. "Because they breed! You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce."

I tell you, Andre Bauer is an absolute scream!

But here's the real punch line: The need for food stamps has been soaring as more and more Americans are falling out of the middle class into poverty. From 2000 to 2008, 5 million more were added to the poverty rolls, and that was before the economic collapse of the last two years. In fact, check this out Andre, and laugh if you feel like it: About 6 million Americans today are living entirely on food stamps -- they've lost their jobs and have no other income. That's one out of every 50 of us, and their numbers are growing rapidly. Now, isn't that a hoot?

Well, one who's not laughing is Republican member of Congress John Linder. This far-out Georgia right-winger is irked that America's food stamp program will grow to more than $60 billion this year. "This is craziness," Linder barked to a New York Times reporter. "We're at risk of creating an entire class, a subset of people, just comfortable getting by living off the government."

Comfortable? When was the last time this pampered lawmaker experienced the "comforts" of the food stamp life? Linder himself has been "living off the government" for 18 years, but at the high end -- drawing $174,000 a year in pay, plus subsidized health care, a fat pension and generous perks of office.

Hypocrisy aside, Linder is an anti-government, laissez-faire extremist who buys into Bauer's fantasies about lazy, good-for-nothing strays getting food stamps.

"You don't improve the economy by paying people to sit around and not work," he grumps, adding, "You improve the economy by lowering taxes."

Really? Perhaps the gentleman from Georgia has forgotten that he and the whole Washington insider crowd tried that scam again and again throughout the past decade, slashing all sorts of taxes for corporations and the wealthy. Since Linder is a multimillionaire, that economic "plan" undoubtedly worked out splendidly for him.

For the middle class, however, the 10 years since January 2000 are known as "the lost decade." In that period, the U.S. economy lost more jobs than it created -- zero job growth. That's the first decade since the end of the Depression that our country has had less than a 20 percent rise in job creation.

Also, after the 10-year frenzy of tax-cutting, middle-class families are earning less today, in real dollars, than they did in 1999. Add in skyrocketing health care costs and the plummeting value of people's homes, and we get the harsh reality of mushrooming poverty.

So that "subset of people" on food stamps whom Linder so callously denigrates are his own spawn! The food stamp program has had to grow because the tinkle-down economy that he pushed has wrecked America's middle class.

Does knocking poor people make these guys feel better about themselves? How pathetic. Bauer and Linder are living proof that when it comes to leadership, America has too many 5-watt bulbs screwed into 150-watt sockets.

People tend to relate with

People tend to relate with people they consider being like themselves. So Liberals looks for Liberal or whatever it is called. Conservatives for conservatives and, so on. It looks like some people feel very comfortable voting for jokers and idiots and ignorant. But these idiots/ignorant are the leaders of the country. And the situation is becoming worse. Honestly I do not see any hope for improvement.

Just Republicans? I don't

Just Republicans?
I don't hear much of a message from community organizer Obama.
Neither do I see most Congressional Democrats ready to confront our economic realities.
When they are out on the street (unfortunately probably K Street), they can reflect on why.

I dunno, I suspect the title

I dunno, I suspect the title is off a bit, Politicians, unless totally deranged or senile, are aware of the shafted underclass. Bauer uses them as an example. These bought and sold bums work for their constituents. The hick from Georgia wants to make sure there's enough dough for Lockheed Martin, can't have that if more people get on foodstamps and cut into profits.

LAWMAKERS NEED TO PURCHASE

LAWMAKERS NEED TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN HEALTH INSURANCE!!
Why am I footing their bill? They're not paying mine...

The sad irony is that food

The sad irony is that food stamps (like school lunch programs and most of our foreign aid) are at heart agricultural subsidies. It's so easy to blame the recipients and ignore the real beneficiaries.

Why don't we eliminate

Why don't we eliminate government subsidies and tax breaks for corporations. After all, they are going to breed.

Why not eliminate the FREE

Why not eliminate the FREE LUNCHES congress people have at the congressional dining room???
they eat pretty darned good there on our dime. Not the stuff of us peasants, believe me.

Yet according to a recent

Yet according to a recent poll commissioned by daily Kos (or a Kos member), a majority say they'd vote for Palin as GOP candidate and would vote for a GOP candidate.

So what's up? Certainly I agree w/Mr. Hightower, but it seems that, receiving food stamps or not, people are still seeing themselves as gop. Very durable propaganda I'd say.

Or maybe it's because Obama's administration seems like bushlite in many ways, bailing out bankers, they're still getting huge bonuses, patriot act, still around, gitmo--still open & 50 people who have not been convicted of anything will continue to be detained, reaffirming Bush's DOJ stance re: gov't secrecy & ability to do warrantless search & seizure/survelliance and so on.

Budget of aggression? Still bloated & specifically exempted from any spending cuts.

So the differences are? A few. But there's a whole lot of angry energy & fear that out there & neither the Obama administration nor Congress (& definitely not an oblivious, corporate profits obsessed S.Ct majority) seems to be able to offer it any constructive release. Apparently because they are unable to stop themselves from kowtowing the the corporate elite (maybe a few Congresspeople do).

the health insurance reform bill looked like farce to me. Just made the entire uninsured population free for insurer pillaging & making sure people will be underinsured & unable to pay for medical care (especially preventive) because all their disposable income is going towards paying health insurance premiums for a policy that covers almost nothing.

"Where else can raw

"Where else can raw ignorance rise to such high places -- and then flaunt itself shamelessly for all to see?"

An everyday occurence in Texas.

Someone here had a a good

Someone here had a a good idea, take away Congress' health care that we pay for and watch thing change fast. I've known people that had to collect food stamps for a little time and I can assure you that they weren't "comfortable."

I've found that the most

I've found that the most virulent, anti-government right-wingers ALL are getting by through generous pensions provided by their years working on government jobs (military, police, state government, etc.) and my most liberal, left friends are either small business owners/entrepreneurs or work for private firms (private colleges, etc.). And although I don't know their income levels, it would be a pretty safe bet that my left friends pay A LOT more in federal taxes than my right friends and relatives. Interesting, isn't it?

Hey, a great number of the

Hey, a great number of the independents are almost as out of touch. They may not be such whack-jobs on the birther or socialist issues, but they don't really understand how far the Middle Class has fallen since January, 2001 (which BTW, is the beginning of this decade).

I am permanently disabled

I am permanently disabled through no fault of my own and take exception to Reagan having lumped us together with able- bodied welfare recipients while 70% of annually allocated funding goes straight to government as administrative costs! One simple and direct question, was this 18 year career member of Congress John Linder from Georgia a multimillionaire BEFORE he took office?

Is there any hope that the

Is there any hope that the south might secede again? I have a hard time seeing what the rest of us would loose.

Yes, these conservative

Yes, these conservative hypocrites are the worst. But what about Obama, who is cutting spending overall while still increasing our obscenely bloated military budget? We could easily pay for programs to get jobs for all these people, fight global warming, and much more by cutting the military budget, and we'd still be spending far more than any other country in the world. But our priorities are upside down. If we were really concerned about national security, we'd cut the military budget and use the money to fight global warming, our biggest and most urgent threat. Instead, we are ignoring the biggest threat and spending like mad on imaginary threats, like the country we imagine is going to declare war on us. Which country is going to do that? Where is your proof? We know global warming is going to cause far more destruction than any war ever has. Why are we still doing almost nothing about it, when there is so little time left?

How about Democratic

How about Democratic a$$holes like Max Baucus?
He's way the hell out of touch, How many Democrats voted for supplemental funding for our illegal conflicts? A lot!

23:39 is so right.

23:39 is so right. Everywhere from Commerce to Justice, and of course, the Treasury Department - you have these ditto heads enjoying well protected careers. Judging from the appointments at some agencies it's no wonder they are staffed with similarly minded stooges.

I read a commenter the other

I read a commenter the other day say that America has always been a Capitalist Country (which is true), bla blaa bla. The truth is that America has always been about the struggle for fairness/ balance between the Ideas of Capitalism and Democracy. If you look back at our history, it’s a back and forth struggle. Every time they step on the pedal towards Un-restrained Capitalism, the s#*t hits the fan somewhere. Sometimes Economically, sometimes Socially, and sometimes as in War. And that struggle between Democracy and Capitalism has been filled with corruption all along. Nobody wants a socialist country, nobody I know, and especially me, I value my Freedom. But Americans have always known when to push back toward Democracy, to make big plans, and as a result have always recovered nicely. Now is one of those times. It is time that the common man felt some corrections around them and within themselves.

Many people on the right have their hearts in the right places, as I think they realize the seriousness of our future. I agree with them in many areas. Freedom, Independence, Democracy and the United States Constitution, Patriotism, Fair Taxation (and fiscal accountability), Work/ reward relationship (many would call this capitalism), Free Speech, and Justice.

That’s all there is folks; if we could succeed in all those areas we would have our great Country back. Of all of those Values and Ideas above, only the work/ reward relationship is going strong. Many people on the right are focused on that one capitalist ideal and ignoring all the rest. Which value above is not, right now, threatened in the steadfast pursuit of the work/ reward, ownership relationship? I’m not saying to do away with that Ideal, capitalism in many areas works well, it is a powerful tool. I’m just saying to look at history and realize a few things.

When are we people going to realize that there are some things you have to Privatize and some things you have to Socialize, and realize the benefits of the combination. Is that too hard to understand? If you don’t see that, then stay the h@ll off my roads. If I catch you on a public road again, I’m gonna sue you. And you still owe US for those 12 years of education. With interest. Among other things.

We need to make OUR government work, not tear it down or eliminate it. And we need real Journalism and TRUTH to do that. Fox Corporation is not real Journalism or Truth. Not the whole truth for sure. The “right” is standing in the way with their BS.

I am outraged at their

I am outraged at their hubris. And these people I am sure call themselves Christians.

I agree with many statements above concerning Congress paying their own way. Let them pay for their medical coverage, transportation, food, housing like the rest of us. We have to live within our means. I think the members of Congress need to live without all the freebies.

The GOP would prefer people starve to death.
That way there will be more for them.

While we are at it, 21:23 has a good point. Need to end the free ride for corporations and subsidies.

Seriously, I am a Grpahic

Seriously, I am a Grpahic and Web Designer, and I make, more or less half of what I made in 2000, by the numbers, having been laid off in the local NYC region crash following 9/11. Since that time, I have struggled to build a freelance practice from zero. But my real-world buying power has fallen as well. In 2007, a slowly growing business began to implode with the failing economy, and expenses too a sharp uptick, most painfully, the health plan I must pay for on my own.

So far I have at least kept working, and we have avoided going on public relief. But it's been a near thing.

But I expect to retire when they wheel my cold dead carcass away from my workstation.

Re: argument that the US was

Re: argument that the US was and still is a

battleground of capitalism vs. democracy.

I would add that the advantages of capital and buying politicians was for decades offset somewhat by the large percentage of the other side living on their own farms or joining themselves in unions. After all, there´s no battle if one side holds all the cards. Which is the reality nowadays.

For decades those who work for their living have been convinced they can participate in the capital-driven profit lifestyle by buying homes they can´t afford and throwing their retirement savings into ponzi schemes - obviously I´m painting with a broad brush. In a sense the battle was won by the capitalists by encouraging the other side to give up their somewhat secure positions by enticing them with participation in the capitalist illusion of easy profits (illusion because, as in the 20´s, the long-term profits are reserved to the insiders) - and, dumbies that we are - we gleefully abandoned our stakes and cheered the bombing and dismantling of other countries and of our own legal system while the snakes waited to pull the rug out from us just when we were the most indebted. It was a coup long in the making and hilariously successful.

And the winners like Andre Bauer are delirious with victory! Why not drive the
nails in a little deeper! Anyone who is pessimistic about the outlook for themselves or their children is right on the money - only it´s only going to be worse than most americans can believe. See Dmitry Orlov for a better description of the future in the US.

Keep shooting yourself in

Keep shooting yourself in the foot progressives! You want to call Obama Bush-lite and then wonder as the Republican agenda grows stronger with corporate media declarations of victory. Does the environment matter to anyone? Or the Supreme Court? How do you create a winning side- by deserting your key player on the field- if you are a liberal it seems that is your strategy.
Bloggers on this site sound just as anti-government and "ted krazinski"-like as any tea-bagger on Fox News.
We are not being served well by any media these days- the corporate is so Right wing and the blogs are for teabaggers- left, right and in-between.

To follow up on my previous

To follow up on my previous post on capitalism vs. democracy - until recently, capital actually needed our labor, especially after europe and russia were decimated during WWII. That was another card on ¨our¨ side. Perhaps it used to be difficult to manage a factory half-way around the world. Apparently it´s not so hard anymore so - at the game table of life, what can american labor offer anymore except to humiliate itself on camera in front of judges like Andre Bauer and hundreds of others amusing themselves at the expense of millions of fools who didn´t get in on the government gravy train like they did.

The Democrats have also

The Democrats have also proven to be amazingly out of touch. Witness the "healthcare debate", even now Obama wafts an evidently disingenuous query into the air looking for ideas to more successfully reform healthcare, and ironically he wants to hear from doctors specifically. Ironic because he does not want to hear from Dr. Margaret Flowers, because she represents 60%+ of American physicians who believe a single-payer, Medicare-for-all healthcare plan has the elements meeting well-established criteria. They have allowed the right to cast true reform as socialist, putting the lie once- and-for-all to the notion that there is a dime's worth of difference between R's and D's. So that makes the MA Senate vote all the more troubling. Democrats needed to pull that one out and they choked, big time. Jim's covering a bit for Dems in these dark hours, but that ain't gonna cut it.

It's not just Republicans.

It's not just Republicans. Many Democrats are culprits to our economic troubles. Our government has always favored Wall Street over helping the citizens. Who else can fund a politician and hire a lobby firm to get results in favor of their interests? All politicians have to be rich to fund an election campaign. Their interests were never for the people. If they had the people in mind, they forgot it once they got into office. No one gets to a place of power without selling out to corporations. Mind you there are good politicians but it's harder for them to get good policies done. they are out numbered. The middle class has be shrinking for a lot longer than 10 years. Bill Clinton was a culprit and deserved some blame. He did reverse Glass-Steagall and enacted NAFTA. I don't think Jim should forget that Democrats are just as guilty of our economic problems.

"Bauer and Linder are living

"Bauer and Linder are living proof that when it comes to leadership, America has too many 5-watt bulbs screwed into 150-watt sockets."

Americans stubbornly elect, and re-elect, into office precisely those people who will enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else, but politicians are being called dim lightbulbs?

The few have succeeded magnificently in their endeavors of unbridled avarice because the fears and prejudices of the many are so deep that exploiting them has proven to be a sure formula for success in pitting Americans one against another.
