Justifying the Unspeakable

The list of dubious choices made by President Obama during his first two years in office is breathtaking in scope. But nothing he has done - not the expansion of the war in Afghanistan, the appointment to his economic team of the men who'd just helped ruin our economy, nor the billion-dollar gift to the heath insurance industry - is as indefensible as his decision to continue military funding to four countries that utilize child soldiers.

Has it really come to this? Have the politics of fear so overwhelmed him that he is willing to sacrifice thousands of innocent children in the hope that a handful of warlords can be trusted to look out for our best interests?

According to Amnesty International, UNICEF, and other human rights organizations, as many as 300,000 children have been forced to participate in conflicts across the globe as child soldiers. Females taken captive by these troops are routinely used as sexual slaves by their commanders. As part of their indoctrination into the military, many children are required to perform acts of violence against their peers. One such soldier, a young girl named Susan, told Human Rights Watch investigators of being forced to kill a fellow abductee who had tried to escape:

"His hands were tied, and then they made us, the other new captives, kill him with a stick. I felt sick. I knew this boy from before. We were from the same village. I refused to kill him and they told me they would shoot me. They pointed a gun at me, so I had to do it. The boy was asking me, 'Why are you doing this?'... I still dream about the boy from my village who I killed. I see him in my dreams, and he is talking to me and saying I killed him for nothing, and I am crying."

In his memorandum of justification to Congress, Obama declared that his October 25 ruling was "in our national interest." He also submitted rationales specific to each country.

Sanctions against Chad, he wrote, were waived in order to preserve our "cooperative relationship in combating terrorism." The Democratic Republic of Congo got a free pass to ensure that we do not "jeopardize the opportunity to influence the behavior we wish to change" - which, presumably, refers to years of systematic rape and murder of civilians by DRC military forces. Sudan was exempted so training could continue for Southern Sudan's People's Liberation Army - a proactive measure deemed necessary in case the now tenuous US brokered Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended the country's 21-year North-South civil war, collapses. Funding for Yemen - where children "may make up more than half" of its government-mobilized tribal militias - was given the green light because it is "a key partner in counterterrorism operations against al Qaeda."

In addition to creating a false sense of security, the waiving of these sanctions cripples the objective of one of Obama's Senatorial highlights, the passage of the Child Soldiers Prevention Act, and further blurs the distinction between his administration and that of his predecessor, whose policy of torture defined the war in Iraq and whose concurrent intelligence-sharing arrangement with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir served to temper the US response to the genocide in Darfur.

We all agree that the task of keeping America safe is of paramount importance and is enormously complex. But there must be a limit to how far a commander in chief will go to get that job done. For such clarity, the president need look no further than the transcript of a speech he delivered last year in Africa.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Parliament, Obama proclaimed: "we must stand up to inhumanity in our midst ... It is never justified." Adding: "It is the death sentence of a society to force children to kill in wars."

Today, those remarks seem to have faded from his memory. As have the children.

I'd like to have access to

I'd like to have access to his Swiss bank acct,O, has insulted us at every juncture , find a reason to impeach him

Obama's failure to prosecute

Obama's failure to prosecute Bush era war criminals, self-confessed, at the same time he held a show trial for a former child soldier who was tortured into confessing, and then this, demonstrates the US is a nation of hypocrites and liars without principles, morals, nor ethics.

Whenever I hear a US politician invoke "a nation of laws" or "the rule of law", the only way I can keep the bile from rising up is to laugh derisively.

America. The pitiful.

DRAFT Malia and Sasha.

DRAFT Malia and Sasha.

Amerika, the pitiful!

Amerika, the pitiful! Perfect REFRAME.

I had hope that this

I had hope that this Administration would stand up to the criminal activity of the previous one, but instead, they seem to embrace it and it's crimes against Humanity. By not prosecuting those responsible for TORTURE, DESTRUCTION of critical EVIDENCE of that torture, and sanctioning "child" soldiers, they have shown themselves to be just as barbaric and CRIMINAL! WHERE is the Change you promised, Mr. Obama? Continuing the WORST policies of the Bush/Cheney Regime only adds credence to the "shrub's" Fairy Tale book which is OUTRIGHT fantasy and LIES! If this Administration doesn't return us to SANITY and REASON over the next two years, Sir, YOU HAVE LOST MY VOTE!

Chavez got it right when he

Chavez got it right when he said there were two Obama's; one, the guy who gives the great speeches & the other; the head of the empire (I would say, the titular head of the evil empire).

There is clearly despair in

There is clearly despair in the comments of so many people on so many of the articles that reveal Obama to be a fraud and a betrayer. Please consider leaving the country. There are wonderful places in South America that are experimenting with enlightened ideas and different economic systems and forms of democracy. I am moving to Uruguay. It is a third world country, and I will be required to adjust my lifestyle to a different way of living. But, they are not at war with anyone. Life is slower there. It is sweet and simple. By bringing our financial resources, we will help to grow the economy.

Please consider leaving this sinking Titanic of a country and help an emerging country to grow, and save yourself in the process.

The actions of this

The actions of this supposedly 'decent' man get more abominable with every passing day.
What the Hell does America stand for anymore?
This stupid, pointless, endless War on Terror is a travesty. It achieves nothing except more slaughter of more innocents.
I hope you're all proud of your President! I'm sick and tired of the apologists who say, he can't help it, he means well, he's trying to do the right thing!!!
THE HELL HE IS!!!!!!!
With a few exceptions he's done the wrong thing ever since he stepped into the Oval office.
Disgrace and disgust is what he brings to the U.S.A. So many opportunities to do it right, and he does it wrong every time!

"National interest." This

"National interest." This phrase has been used as an excuse by every administration in my lifetime (going back to Truman!) as justification for condoning human rights abuses. It justified our support of repressive governments in Viet Nam, Chile, Nicaragua, Cube (pre-Castro, of course) and many many other places. How can it be in our national interest as a democracy that apotheosizes "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" to support such maltreament of humans? How can it be in our national interest to be and be seen as such an international hypocrite? If we, in the person of our elected government, publicly do not care about people of other places in the world, why should they care about us? If we are so willing to see others treated so badly, why should others not want the same for us?

All I can say is "ditto". I

All I can say is "ditto". I am so ashamed and just
plain outraged. These poor children, what the hell
is he thinking. He may not be able to save them all, but to not even try! I don't know where to turn anymore, my country is somewhere I don't recognize. I am very sad.

I have started this comment

I have started this comment a dozen times but can not find the words to express my disgust in Obama and the Democrat Party. Every time a congressperson gets up to push one of their favorite projects the most important talking point is that it is for the children, the children's best interest at heart. Ha! bulls**t.
You know what I mean.

Everyone's comments are

Everyone's comments are right on. We are living in media controlled environment and most people believe what the media is telling them. We have been educating kids not to think for themselves since the 60's. Gobble this information and take the test and you'll pass. Ethics are no longer taught or valued. Read the book '1984' . It use to be required high school reading. We are living it now. Everything is an illusion. Double speak is what is happening for reasoning, peace is war, war is peace, we must have war in order to have peace.... it is double speak we are sinking. Infiltrations are on all levels in all areas. They have had all the money they needed since forming the 'Federal Reserve', I mean 'International Banking Cartel'. Two parties are only an illusion. It is one party with the illusion of two to give you the idea you have power and can have hope. It is all an illusion...
