Killing the Poor Instead of Taxing the Wealthy in Arizona

Killing the Poor Instead of Taxing the Wealthy in Arizona

If you happen to be sick and poor and are among the 98 people in Arizona who are awaiting state-funded organ transplants, you've just been handed a death sentence.

This morning, NPR reported on cuts to the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the statewide health care provider for poor and disabled people. AHCCCS said it would pay for organ transplant procedures, then went back and reversed itself, citing risk evidence that critics say was tailored to give them cover for this unthinkable action.

Instead of trying to save the lives of these people, who had been told that they had a chance to spend a few more years with their families, the Arizona legislature has chosen to take away their hope in order to save an estimated $4.5 million.

Facing a projected $1.5 billion budget deficit, the state of Arizona has decided to make poor people pay with their lives instead of making rich people pay with their treasure.

This didn't have to happen. In a special election in January 2010, the people of Oregon (a state with a comparable average income as Arizona) decided to raise taxes on the wealthy and on corporations instead of cutting essential services. Despite an all-out effort to convince voters that taxing the rich would hurt the poor, voters approved Measures 66 and 67, raising tax rates on those most able to pay and allocating the money to preserve state services.

Our economy for the past decade or more has been built on lies. Superfueled by greed and so-called "innovation" in the financial sector, it finally careened off the road and slammed head-on into the cement wall of reality. Instead of taxing the people who caused and profited from this situation, our political system has bailed them out, buried their crimes and passed the costs onto the most vulnerable - people like the 98 poor men and women who were told their lives might be saved, only to have that hope taken away.

The right wing is full of lies and excuses about the economic "logic" of cutting government programs. But what they will not tell you is that some of these programs are literally the only hope for people at the bottom of the economy. By standing in the way of economic justice, conservative politicians make their fantasies of brutal "health care rationing" and "death panels" into reality.

In Arizona, 98 families may be forced to watch a loved one die slowly. The rest of us must take a moment to accept responsibility for allowing this to happen and ask ourselves what we can do about it. Instead of hoping for a good-hearted philanthropist to break off some crumbs to pay for these surgeries, we must reclaim our power to force society and government to take care of the least among us.

The number is higher than 98

The number is higher than 98 as blood cancer patients awaiting bone marrow or stem cell transplants are also impacted. I am one of them. I have worked and paid taxes my entire adult life. I was not "sick and poor" until after I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009 and bankrupted by medical bills that include a medication that costs $4,500 and must be taken for life. What happened to me could happen to anyone. Adults make up 90% of newly diagnosed leukemia patients. Thanks for reporting on this.

The Republican party is

The Republican party is guilty, guilty guilty! Let the politicians who voted to not fund the health care of these people NOT be able to buy insurance or have help either. What a bunch of selfish miserable, horrible people.

The Teabaggers were right!

The Teabaggers were right! At last, we see the government death panel that the Teabaggers worried about, in (of course) a Republican dominated state.

Wanna bet no Teabaggers protest this death panel's decision? We're not talking about their Gramma, so who cares?

This is what you will get in

This is what you will get in the future --cost cutting with government-run Obamacare. Paul Krugman said that the government will have to eventually use "death panels" and raise taxes (Vat tax) to avoid big deficits. This is what you get when the government plays doctor.

Heh, Gov't plays doctor? how

Heh, Gov't plays doctor? how about not letting the gov't cap the costs of healthcare and not banning the practice of soulless corporations making a profit off of our sickness and suffering?

ya the republican government

ya the republican government that we all know well! and no soul to be found!

The plutocracy is just

The plutocracy is just beginning, and the ignorant and arrogant tea-baggers are fueling the assent of the money-changers and profiteers. Unless we, the educated and progressive, take the media back, and with great force push against them, we are doomed. Obama, truthfully, has been a bust, and we should replace him in 2012 with a real progressive who will stand against the plutocracy with real strength. Throwing the poor and needy under the bus is just the beginning of corporatizing America. The public school system is also under attack from the right in the form of for-profit charter schools. Where will it leave the disenfranchised when our school system is turned over to profiteers?

Not very surprising for

Not very surprising for Arizona. Worst bunch of fascist pigs this side of Nazi Germany!

BS. AHCCS (Arizona

BS. AHCCS (Arizona Medicaid) is still paying for transplants. However, in the Felix case, he was denied because he has Hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is incurable and despite a transplant, Mr. Felix would likely be back in liver failure in the future. Now, here's another reality check -- do you honestly believe that such transplants will be covered under a national healthcare system? I find that hard to believe, libs.

My favorite bumper sticker

My favorite bumper sticker of all time:

The Republican Party sez "If you're not rich, HURRY UP AND DIE!

I think that about sums the Repugs up.

A long list of excuses will

A long list of excuses will now be presented by the right and why this is just left wing propaganda. They should hang their heads in shame to even considering one life or 98 or 980 is any less valuable then the mighty dollar in which they worship. They will throw around such terms as socialist when in actual fact they have no idea what they are talking about and I am thankful that every day I awake in a country that at the very least has a social conscience.

"However, in the Felix case,

"However, in the Felix case, he was denied because he has Hepatitis C. "

Nice try, but Hep C patient never get on the transplant list. That has nothing to do with defunding people who *are* on the transplant list, which is what this article is about.

I find these comments, at

I find these comments, at the end of a controversial article, to be as edifying and interesting as the articles themselves, sometimes! I trust that the Truthout reporters scavenge the facts to report the truth - really it's my only chosen window to the outside world; so from here I learn the most, and I have high expectations! Anyway, I have been feeling disillusioned and almost frantically helpless when I get a chance to examine the state of things in the world and especially this country. Our government, in my opinion, is already dead but it hasn't laid down yet. We're like fish out of water and all we're doing is flapping around gasping for breath; but, gasp all we want, we are going down. I don't know if your familiar with that old movie where the citizens start yelling, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" I've been thinking that maybe one day there will be enough people to yell out that sentiment; where by shear numbers alone, do not have to fear retribution. This nation will not stay down, I have faith, but in the meantime I'm going to pray!

Again, more BS. As of

Again, more BS. As of November 5th, 48 AHCCS patients with Hepatitis C were on the national liver transplant list. Those 48 are included with the 98 people that AHCCS has now denied transplants to because their mortality rate does not change with transplantation. Liver transplants for NON HEPATITIS C PATIENTS ARE STILL COVERED UNDER AHCCS, again contrary to the author's "facts." If you're against this sort of measure, then all of you should be out picketing the Obama health care bill because this sort of rationing of care based upon the medical literature will become the standard upon whichthat monsterous bureaucracy to be will make its decisions.

Excerpt HEALTHCARE FOR MY

Excerpt HEALTHCARE FOR MY NEIGHBORS? Editorial, 500 words

Our medical and medical insurance ethos sadly is that sick people are good for business. That health care should be a money making machine is the mentality of a nation tricked into believing for-profit health care and medical insurance are superior to national health care as practiced in every other industrialized nation. In contrast the ethos of national healthcare is to keep people healthy in order to save buckets of money. It works. Every nation with national health care delivers health care for all at a fraction of the cost Americans pay. The incentives of public health care are opposite to those of a for-profit system.

I am a WWll veteran. My response to conservatives who are certain government can’t do anything right is that I am grateful for VA health care and for Medicare, both run by “the government” and paid for in the same way we pay for public education and the fire department, i.e., through public taxation.

This is just the start.

This is just the start. Tragedy, human suffering, nothing matters to the Power Elite except whatever affects them. HCA corp is doing a round of financing (further burdening the corporation and adding to health care costs) in order to give its owners (Bain Capital-Mitt Romney, KKR, Merill Lynch) a 2 BILLION dollar bonus. Not a dollar of that goes to provide a smidgen of health care. it is simply another slick maneuver to take an additional $2B from the middle class (is there even a middle class anymore) and poor. it is getting so ease for these guys. Like taking candy (or medication) from a baby. Literally.

When will the unwashed masses, agitated by skillfully applied dollars by that same Power Elite, stop voting against their own interests? Sadly, history suggests never.

Welcome to the Fascist States of America.

Incidentally, a recent post

Incidentally, a recent post says that medicare is run by "the government". Sadly that is not true. In this state Medicare is contracted to Palmetto, a private insurance company, wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross. Blue Cross makes money on their government contract the same way they make money on their regular policies. By denying service.

Where are the

Where are the Right-to-Lifers now??? Shouldn't we be surprised by their silence? Or not.

"the Arizona legislature has

"the Arizona legislature has chosen to take away their hope in order to save an estimated $4.5 million.

Facing a projected $1.5 billion budget deficit, the state of Arizona has decided to make poor people pay with their lives instead of making rich people pay with their treasure."

In the past few years the AZ legislature gave themselves a total of 8 billion dollars per year raises. Since then they have done the worst job in history stepping on the rights of the people raising taxes cuttings services, and...not even considering that there would be a surplus if they hadn't given themselves unnecessary, undeserved, and unaffordable raises.

RESCIND THE RAISES!!!

"Where are the

"Where are the Right-to-Lifers now??? "

The right to torturers are in the AZ legislature and governor's office, forcing more people to be born that will be mis-educated onto welfare system injustice.

A pity your healthcare isn't

A pity your healthcare isn't run by the government rather than the 'insurance' industry. Freedom for an individual to not be able to afford health care is hardly freedom at all. Our system isn't perfect, but its clearly a country mile ahead of the US in being able to provide good healthcare for all, and at a much lower overall cost. Watching the raging of American citizens against government provided healthcare causes people in my country to wonder "what is it with Americans? How can they be so committed to working and voting against their own best interests? What are they on?"

AZ has also stopped paying

AZ has also stopped paying for transplants for non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. These happen to include adult congenital heart survivors who have been through a tremendous amount just to reach adulthood.
Many of them are products of the system, and after numerous surgeries, and medical interventions, now need heart transplants. However under AZ law, they will be denied having this paid for by ACCCHS. Luckily, some are still covered by their parent's insurance until they reach 26 years old. Then? They either have to move, hope for stem cell advances in medicine or trust in God!

I say it is good that the

I say it is good that the RNP has gained the house perhaps people's frustration with the current state of affairs confronts the true agenda of the Republicans and all the cut-backs they are planning for the people they will understand the Republicans have not and have never been concerned about the working class people. While the 3% of America that owns America have and will continue to take your tax money and allocate it against youbut the only thing is, the hole they are digging for the working class takes y ears to dig out of.

They will never get to see it. Right wing radio, the inability to know who is funding politicians and propositions because corporations are now people, and the toxic blend of vitriol and blame that the right uses to shift responsibility for their destructiveness Bush and the Iraq war and the spread of the Taliban). The people don't know who to blame anymore so the shrillest voices coupled with the biggest media will blind them until, like the Jews in Germany, they are looking into their own graves, given guns and told to shoot each other in the heads).I have never been as hopeless as I am since this last election. I think evil is alive and well and living in the RNC, the Tea Party, and Fox News.

It's capitalism, people --

It's capitalism, people -- not Republicans or Democrats, not Teabaggers or Obamanoids -- just capitalism: infinite greed as maximum virtue, boundless selfishness as ultimate good. Combine that with government that serves only the capitalists -- absolute power and unlimited profit for the ruling class, total subjugation and genocidal poverty for all the rest of us -- and you've got today's United States: the perfect tyrannocapitalist despotism, the de facto Fourth Reich.

It is too bad that the

It is too bad that the Americans (and their govt) do not have the vision nor fortitude . etc.. to invest in the quality of life for their people, including health care and education. I am glad I live in Europe where we believe and invest in the qualiity of life of our citizens. America will continue to fall behind the rest of the industrial nations in qulaity of life. Arizona is a basket case. How sad.

I feel what Oregon is doing

I feel what Oregon is doing is the smarter way to go and that is just a sin for them to do that in Arizona... I'm surprised that they get away with that.. Why aren't the people up on their high horse and stop such shinanigens....

" I feel what Oregon is

" I feel what Oregon is doing "
You say you are surprised that people don't get up on their high horses and stop such ..............
I say that the lumpen masses have been tranquillized by the " Bread and Circuses " offered to them by the media and government . Their only concern is what movie stars and celebrities are up to , who is doing who , buying the latest gadgets and electronic gizmos , watching violent movies with lots of blood and guts . I guess that is part of our heritage and now we still enjoy dominating 3 rd world countries with our creative destruction . People should be up on their high horses about the hundreds of Billions being wasted in useless wars and the corruption in Washington . [ Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac ]

Folks, we are all going to

Folks, we are all going to die some day. Life expectancy in the US has increased by 30 years in the last century. IT'S NOT FREE!

There is a point of diminishing returns to all this. A very large amount of our health care cost is in the last year of life, and often brings a tremendous decrease in quality of life.

We need to accept death as a natural part of life. It does not make sense to say that the smallest extension of life is worth unlimited cost. Quality, not quantity!

As long as profits are more

As long as profits are more important than people ... we're screwed.

I find it amazing that after

I find it amazing that after all the Republicans screamed at the top of their lungs"DEATH PANELS DEATH PANELS" it is the Republican Party in a Republican state that has created death panels. I can't wait till we hear about how christian it is to let grandma and grandpa die and not prolong their miserable lives. How could a christian make old people live with the fact that they are making their children and grandchildren watch them suffer. thank you republican party for showing all the world exactly who is and always was in favor of death panels.

I just want to say this is

I just want to say this is appalling..Thank you for sharing this information. After sharing this on my facebook page an acquaintance and I have gotten into a lengthy debate on this and a few other issues. I find it quite amusing and disturbing how people can be so ignorant out the true nature of our country..

This so-called "Christian"

This so-called "Christian" nation is full of people merely posing as Christians. They claim to read the Bible but skip over Proverbs 21:13 - "Who so stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard." And Proverbs 22:13 - "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich [think extending Bush's tax cuts to the wealthiest 2%], shall surely come to want." And Proverbs 28:27 - "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse." And Psalms 41:1-3: 1 Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. 2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies. 3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

Christ must surely be sickened by those taking his name in vain, particularly those who do it the loudest (think Fox, i.e. Palin, Beck, etc.) and for whom Judgment Day awaits. They are among the Pharisees of our time. To the Pharisees of His time, Jesus said to them, "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." (Matthew 23:27-28). Jesus told the Pharisees that because of their hypocrisy God would assign them to the place of weeping and gnashing of teeth [aka Hell]. (Matthew 24:51).
