Let's Pass Some Laws Before the Republicans Head Into Town (After All, That's What They'd Do)

Dear Congressional Democrats:

Welcome back to our nation's capital for your one final session of the 111th Congress. Come January, the Republicans will take over the House while the Democrats will retain control of the Senate.

But Dems -- here's something I don't understand: Why do you look all sullen and depressed? Clearly you're not aware of one very important fact: YOU ARE STILL COMPLETELY, TOTALLY, LEGALLY IN CHARGE! When (and if, mostly if) you wake up to the reality that you can do whatever you want for the next seven weeks, you will realize that you have two clear options:

1. You can continue your "Sit Quietly and Hope No One Hits Me" strategy and thus lay the groundwork for an even bigger ass-kicking two years from now;

Or...

2. You can actually use the power you hold for the next seven weeks and have the Senate pass the legislation that the House has already passed!

Wake up, Democrats! You are in an awesome position right now. The House of Representatives, in this current session of Congress, has already passed an astounding 420 bills since January of 2009 -- 420 bills that are just sitting there on the Senate leader's desk. The Senate has refused to take up these House bills because they've been afraid of a Republican filibuster. Well, Dems, here's the truth: You can pass all of these bills and turn them into law RIGHT NOW, TODAY, by simply calling for a majority vote of 50 Senators (plus Vice President/President of the Senate Joe Biden). Yes, you will need to change the filibuster rules. So do it. You have the votes! And yes, the Republicans will scream bloody murder -- so let them! Make them. Let America see them in all their hateful, spiteful ways -- it will act as a beautiful coming attraction trailer for all the world to see. Let all of America watch the Republicans as they try to derail democracy by holding up a bunch of bills that nearly every American I know would want to see as the law of the land. Many of these bills are so safe, so innocuous, I have a hard time understanding what the heck the problem was in the first place. Like the bill that's already passed the House to name a post office after Jimmy Stewart. I know, I know, the idea of a post office named after Jimmy Stewart is really, really, incredibly controversial and divisive and somebody on the other side of the aisle might yell at you. Be brave, Democrats!

There's a whole slew of these bills the House has passed. Some are no-brainers; others are absolutely necessary. You can pass them in the next seven weeks. And because you Dems seem to have a problem with properly naming your bills and communicating effectively with the average American, I have helpfully renamed them for you so they sound like what they actually are -- things people would really want. Here's a partial list of the bills the House has already passed and are now just in need of approval by the U.S. Senate:

  • The "Give Mom a Raise Act," officially known as the "Paycheck Fairness Act," which addresses pay gaps between men and women. Now, who out there still believes women should be paid less than men? I REALLY want to see Republicans try to stop this one.
  • The "Don't Amputate Our Feet Act," aka the "Eliminating Disparities in Diabetes Prevention Access and Care Act of 2009." Which Republican will stand to speak out in favor of diabetes?
  • The "Pay Up, BP Act," aka the "Audit the BP Fund Act," which makes sure BP is paying people hurt by the Gulf oil spill as quickly as possible -- and makes BP pay the cost of keeping track of where the money’s going.
  • The "Stop Foreigners From Hitting Grandma Act," aka the "Elder Abuse Victims Act." This doesn't really have anything to do with foreigners, but our fellow Americans seem to automatically dislike people from other countries, so this should help just in case the Republicans think an "elders abuse victims act" doesn't sound patriotic enough.
  • The "Let's Try Not to Destroy Planet Earth Act" (aka Cap and Trade, a lousy half-way measure to begin with, but about the best you can expect from you Democrats these days).
  • The "National Bombing Prevention Act" (it's actually already called that, which is hard to improve on).

And while those of you in the Senate are taking care of all that, the House can come up with a better version of Michelle Obama’s “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” to improve child nutrition. The Senate has already passed this bill. (The House should fix it so that it isn't paid for by cutting food stamps to poor people. Yes, you, a Democratic Senate, did that.)

Then there are also things that neither the House or Senate has dealt with. These would take more work during the next two months, but that's what highly-caffeinated "energy" drinks are for.

Jenni Suri of Ligonier, Indiana, has set up a petition with a good list, which anyone can sign here to tell the Congressional leadership to get started. Among the "to do" items on the list:

  • Extend emergency unemployment benefits
  • Repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell
  • Pass the DREAM Act (to provide young immigrants with a path to citizenship)
  • Pass the Disclose Act to force corporations to say what politicians they're giving money to
  • Pass the Employee Free Choice Act, so we can have unions again in the U.S.
  • Pass Rep. Donna Edwards' constitutional amendment that -- in the wake of the Citizens United decision -- would give Congress the power to regulate corporate spending on elections

So what do you say, Democrats? What's the worst that could happen -- you'd lose an election? You already did that! C'mon, here's your one last gutsy chance to show us that you're made of something other than wish and wash.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. Be sure to let the Democrats in Congress know right now you expect action from them during this next month. You can call your Senators and Representative at (202) 224-3121 or find their direct number and email at Congress.org.

Mike, you are right, but too

Mike, you are right, but too logical. It should be done, but it should have been done a long time ago.

How about a public insurance

How about a public insurance option to be funded with the money saved by letting the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% expire?

My friend Dan had an even

My friend Dan had an even better idea: Take this opportunity to extend Medicare to everyone. Let the Repugs do what they will to "Obamacare"--this would replace it! Two can play at this game, if Dems would just step up to the plate.

Ever the optimist, Michael,

Ever the optimist, Michael, you and I know that the Dems and Repubs are owned by the corporate elites, despite the theater conflicts the two parties trot out to fool us sheep. Michael, please continue to hit harder in your documentaries. You've exposed Bush, gun crazies, health care BS, and capitalism for the ghoulishness they all involve, but now how about a nice 3D documentary on how humans are slaughtering the entire planet, paving it, poisoning it...something that starts where The Cove and Avatar left off and ups the ante to include fracking, coal mining, logging, fisheries rape, etc. Let humans see what their capitalist lifestyles do to the other life we share this planet with. Wake the fools up!!!

On the subject of a Jimmy

On the subject of a Jimmy Stewart Post Office, we could use a Mr. Smith in Washington now, someone who has the courage to never back down. But where are you going to find someone of that caliber when all they do is flinch at feathers, feathers disguised as blades. That's it. The Republicans have convinced the Dems that what they're throwing at them is sharp, incising blades when it's merely an illusion. They've been hypnotized by fear and dejection and loud noises. If Mr. Smith proved anything, it's longevity, stamina, and endurance that can bring through some real change, change hearts and minds so that they see their own faults as the Taylors run around trying every underhanded trick to maintain a grasp on their illusory, yet powerful, empires. There are plenty of empires out there these days, where are the Smiths?

Republican, Democrat, it

Republican, Democrat, it doesn't really matter anymore, as history has proven that they're simply two sides of the same coin. If voting Democrat were the answer to our woes, they had two years to do the right things. Sadly, they didn't. For Democrats' to keep shouting that Republican's are responsible for this mess were in, is totally hypocritical. Both sides only cater to the elite and their personal belief systems, most evident in the stupid laws that they pass. Both sides are hopelessly out of touch, with the real issues plaguing our once great nation. The Dream is dead.

Republicans want to close up

Republicans want to close up America culturally, socially, while still maintaining a global trade industry that pools billions to the few. You have the bible-touting type and then you have the cold, calculate Wall Street type. They kill each other eventually, because super-materialists and anti-materialists pretending they don't need anything to live freely and comfortably but still have large homes, many cars, yachts and the like, cannot coexist in the same power space for too long. Like poles repel. But, in this process, the rest of us suffer. It's like all those disputes that end up as wars. It's between a handful of influential people, but then they bring in the rest of the nation and pretend it's our problem as well by bringing out words like national pride and patriotism, and duty to protect the principles of the nation and its people, to save the world from evil, and yada yada yada ya... and then a million poor guys go kill one another thinking they're saving civilization, costing lives and money and infrastructure and ecological stability when all that needed to be done is have the dozen or so implacable enemies duke it out themselves in the ring; or do it gladiator style, or if they prefer, fencing, or ten paces at dusk. Whatever. Stop extending the personal conflicts of few onto the rest of us. It's getting old, and we're getting pissed.

You hear the applause when

You hear the applause when Michael talks? That's the overwhelming agreement and commitment to what Michael Moore is saying! Democrats are angry at our own leaders for their overt wanton debasement of the promises made to the base that got them elected!

Stay strong, LOUD, and keep up the drumbeat, Michael! We are listening. We are not staying quiet. We are demanding the change we were promised!

"The "Give Mom a Raise Act,"

"The "Give Mom a Raise Act," officially known as the "Paycheck Fairness Act," which addresses pay gaps between men and women. Now, who out there still believes women should be paid less than men?"

I do, until such bills also address the fact that men are still discriminated against wholesale on insurance costs (automotive and medical), still discriminated against in the courts (most "community property" rulings only go male to female), and a whole slue of other means by which males must pay up 25 to 30% more than women in order to live.

23:05 — Anonymous - Shut

23:05 — Anonymous - Shut the F up! There are oodles of loopholes out there for men to engage in on those and far more issues than just the ones you cite!

1-Stats show more women are DENIED medical insurance, making them LESS likely to even have insurance as a whole group; 2-Auto ins is managed by WDC lobbyists, who demand premiums based on actual accident rates stats on men and women drivers; and 3-A little thing called "prenuptial agreements" get around that nasty little "community property" situation in marriage contracts.

Man up, and quit whining about these obvious persona non grata problems supposedly imbued with patriarchy!

"Man up, and quit whining

"Man up, and quit whining about these obvious persona non grata problems supposedly imbued with patriarchy!"

You, miss, are a misandric hypocrite. There are no loopholes around men being charged 25-30% more on average for half their living expenses, being denied child custody by fiat (but still getting gutted by child support), and still being expected, despite the fact women are no longer expected anything in return, to be the "breadwinnner".

I'm just talking, right now, about the expenses though. If you want to make as much per paycheck as a guy, the guy should have every right not to pay all that "surplus" he makes into a pricing system which is discriminates heavily against him.

"3-A little thing called

"3-A little thing called "prenuptial agreements" get around that nasty little "community property" situation in marriage contracts."

Because nothing says trust like accompanying an engagement ring with a 20 page contract.

Yay, another reason to get dumped when the government should already be covering your (explative deleted) rather than forcing you to explicitly bring up such dirty laundry during what should be the most romantic period of your relationship.

We've had a lame duck

We've had a lame duck Congress for decades. They play good cop, bad cop with the Repubs.
Oh they is so bad, you must accept my horrid advice lest you suffer worse.

It's as though the Dems,

It's as though the Dems, especially Harry Reid, never heard the phrase "payback!!"

Michael, you know the

Michael, you know the mainstream Democrats will never take advice like this. They are almost as out of touch with reality as the Republicans, but in a very different way. They think they are taking the high ground and that, eventually, some day, they will be rewarded for it. They think if they are nice and giving, the Republicans might return the favor after they take over the House. They have already indicated they still want to compromise with the party of no compromise (which now thinks it has a mandate). Good luck with that!

Of course I WISH the Democrats in power would listen to reason. And you can't give up, no matter how deaf and dumb those leaders are. I often marvel at how stupid Republican voters are, and how stupid Democratic politicians are.

Michael, You are giving too

Michael,
You are giving too much credit to the Democrats, assuming that they want to do the right thing.

If you look at everything the leaders of both parties do
it looks like they are controlled and
following a script
with assigned roles
in a staged performance.
It looks like a sham and
a charade
making a distraction which will be
used for a media bonanza.

If the Democrats aren't complicit with the Republicans they are at least facilitating every action/non-action of the Republicans.

It doesn't look to me like there are two independent parties just staged performances directed by TPTB for you and me.
