Lindsey Graham Calls for War to "Neuter" the Iranian Regime

by: Matt Duss   |  ThinkProgress | Report

Speaking at a security conference in Canada yesterday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) took it upon himself to make U.S.-Iran policy, declaring that “Containment is off the table“:

The South Carolina Republican saw the United States going to war with the Islamic republic “not to just neutralize their nuclear program, but to sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard, in other words neuter that regime.”

In a recent article, Ken Pollack of the Brookings Institution wrote that an attack of the sort that Sen. Graham is calling for “will likely mean the end of the international effort to contain the Iranian nuclear program altogether”:

Tehran will probably withdraw from the NPT, arguing (rightly) that the vast majority of the information that the United States relied on to mount the air strikes came from the IAEA inspectors—and since the NPT was a vehicle for American aggression against Iran, there is no reason for Tehran to remain a party to it. As for the international community, they will doubtless blame Washington for having driven the Iranians out of the treaty. Gone too will be the international consensus to compel Iran to end its nuclear activities through sanctions. America would have violated a critical provision of the resolutions, not to mention the UN Charter, and will have to expect that China will lead a stampede of countries away from that effort and back into the arms of the Islamic Republic.

A repeat attempt by the United States (or anyone else) to destroy Iran’s facilities by force will then be impossible. Once the IAEA inspectors are gone, so too will be our best and most comprehensive sources of information on the Iranian program. Washington won’t have the option of bombing Iran again if the regime begins to rebuild its nuclear capabilities after the first round of strikes. And serious international pressure on Tehran will come to an end.

Pollack determined that, “Under current conditions, attacking Iran is more likely to guarantee an Iranian nuclear arsenal than to preclude it.”

Iranian democracy activists have been very vocal against a U.S. attack on Iran. In a recent interview with Think Progress, Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi stated unequivocally that the military option would be disastrous:

“The military option will not benefit the U.S. interest or the Iranian interest,” said Ebadi. “It is the worst option. You should not think about it.” Ebadi said, “The Iranian people — including myself — will resist any military action.”

An attack on Iran “would give the government an excuse to kill all of its political opponents, as was done during the Iran-Iraq war.” For this reason, Ebadi suggested that the Iranian government probably “wouldn’t mind the U.S. throwing a missile at them.”

Ebadi also criticized the Bush administration’s “axis of evil” approach in the Middle East, saying that Iran and Ahmadinejad, had become more popular in the region because of U.S. policies, particularly the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

In a May interview, Iranian dissident Akbar Ganji described the destructive impact of Bush’s “axis of evil” rhetoric on pro-democracy Iranian moderates. “The belligerent rhetoric of Bush didn’t help us [the Iranian democracy movement], it harmed us,” Ganji said. He insisted that “jingoistic, militaristic language used by any foreign power would actually be detrimental to this natural evolution of Iranian society.”

It’s amazing that, having been proved catastrophically wrong about Iraq, neocons like Graham are now calling for yet another war in the Middle East, defiantly ignorant of the actual consequences. Is it too much to hope that America has learned to stop listening to them?

And here I thought that

And here I thought that Lindsey Graham was the only reasonable Republican left in the Senate. Guess I was wrong.

If anyone still thinks that

If anyone still thinks that America has learned not to listen to the neocons, putting republicans back in charge of congress should have put that notion to bed. What the hell is wrong with this country?

I guess Lindsey must the

I guess Lindsey must the male part of his relationship since he's" spearheading" the movement to neuter the regime.

The time has come to get

The time has come to get serious about these people. They fell it is just fine to wander about the globe inciting passions just to keep the pot boiling.

That was Bush's particular mandate.

The bunch of them are dangerous, as are all who preach the gospel of killing for dollars. We need to change enough of the system so that people in positions of power can not utter such evil nonsense with impunity. There must be recourse.

We vote, but not with our heads. It's kind of like doing the same thing every few years, and hoping for a different result.

The other day I heard

The other day I heard someone say that we're making mistakes caring more about intellect than principle; this is the result of it. Principles are only worthwhile if they are BASED on intelligent thought and reasoning. Any principles based on blind faith and nationalism are just going to bring this world closer to the end-days - which they keep preaching about as if that's something to look forward to.

Read "The israel Lobby" and

Read "The israel Lobby" and you will see that israel, through AIPAC controls the foreign policy of the US. That is why we are fighting 2+ wars in the middle east and rattling sabers for a another. Qui bono? Listen to the eyewitness testimony of Lt. Col Karen Kwiatkowski, who said that israeli generals helped formulate the evidence against Iraq in the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans. Remember the supposed meeting between Iraq and Al Qaeada in Prague, where Iraq supposedly gave anthrax to the terrorists? That story first appeared in the German newspaper Bild, who cited unnamed isreali intelligence sources. So yeah, scratch your head and wonder about why our foreign policy is so insane, but whatever you do, don't mention you know who.

Lindsey Graham must be off

Lindsey Graham must be off his meds.

We must not allow ourselves

We must not allow ourselves to be lied into another illegal and unethical war. We must not allow this country to be dragged int a conflict that the Israeli lobby wants ("Let's you and him run up the hill and take those guys on.")

If ANYONE pressures for a war on Iran, he must be the first to volunteer for active duty on the ground. And he must offer up his children before anyone else's.

If Graham and the Israelis want a war, let them make one - and let the United States cut off all aid for such an adventure.

NOW, friends, do you see why

NOW, friends, do you see why Democrats should have gotten themselves to the polls on November 2? The Repugnicans think they can push us into another war. They think they can take medical care away from sick kids and people with pre-existing conditions. They think they can continue letting multi-millionaires pay no taxes and having the rest of us make up the shortfall.

They think they have burned down the Democratic House, and they want to burn down the Senate and the President.

They think they have won. But wait for the fire next time - because it surely will come.

I read this article with

I read this article with incredulity, as evidently did most of the others who posted responses. I have not read Senator Graham's speech and can only assume that Mr. Druss quotes Senator Graham correctly and in context.

To assume, as Senator Graham evidently does, that the United States can sink Iran's navy, destroy Iran's air force, and eliminate Iran's nuclear program with the same ease as that with which we buy a new cravat is to endow the word insanity with an entirely new dimension. How many hundreds of billions of dollars must we spend in this effort, Senator? How many tens of thousands of corpses will lie rotting upon the Iranian landscape? For how many decades, or perhaps centuries, must we fight the children, the grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren of those who will bear arms against us in this misbegotten adventure? Good God, has the distinguished gentleman from South Carolina lost his mind?

There is no doubt in my mind that, as Mr. Marlowe intimated below, the Israel-First-Last-and-Always (IFLaA) lobby is responsible for the content of Senator Graham's speech. The unhappy reality is that any well-organized and well-funded minority in this country can control congressional action in matters that pertain to itself, and there is no better organized lobby than the IFLaA.

Those of us who view the world differently might want to adopt a few of the tactics that have been used to such advantage by the IFLaA. Specifically, I propose that each of us write to his or her representative and to both of his or her Senators in opposition to the looming war with Iran. While we are doing so let us ask our elected representatives for a middle eastern foreign policy that is based upon rationality and a sense of justice rather than upon the mindless endorsement of everything the Israelis say, think, and do.

What Senator Graham and the

What Senator Graham and the other neocons fail to grasp is that sending our military to wreak havoc in another Islamic nation does more harm than good. A handful of motivated zealots proved that considerable damage can be done to a powerful nation using box cutters. Our adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan have created and continue to create more terrorists.

I'm assuming that the goal is making America safer. It may be that Graham et al are more motivated by the defense industry dollars pouring into their campaign coffers and back pockets. If that is the case, it seems to follow that they do recognize that creating more terrorists helps those who profit off of the blood of innocents and of our troops but is justified by the profits. It is not a stretch to consider such a mindset treasonous.

It is tragic and shameful

It is tragic and shameful that a member of our government would promote war. More so when we already have thousands of damaged recruits to care for now. If we go to any more aggressive wars let us hope that Graham is leading the charge.

Loose Cannon Linsdey Graham

Loose Cannon Linsdey Graham Calls for More War to Solve World's Problems. Film at Eleven.

So, two wars isn't bankrupting America fast enough? This is supposed to be some sort of spending cut, I guess? And I guess we have too many friends internationally, too?

I used to have friends like the USA, manipulative junkies and mean drunks, but I realized I would be much better off if I disassociated myself from them before I got hurt in the stupid crossfire they would eventually drag me into. Too bad it's so hard to disassociate from the country you have lived in all your life.

Graham’s arrogant

Graham’s arrogant ignorance is just another sign of a decadent generation, which has substituted the civilized approach of dialogue and negotiation for outright confrontation. Bush and the republicans wasted a great opportunity to lead the world and make the US a true world leader. Obama is following the same path. The Chinese open markets everywhere, we open military bases. Our country is falling apart due a lack of leadership and incompetence. We are anchored in confrontation as a solution to everything, instead of construction. We claim that we buried “communism”, but Graham and his likes are burying our country, making the same mistakes they made. The incapacity of our system to secure the population most elemental human needs should be seen as a sign of weakness. The use of force is a sign of weakness. The last resort of those whose ideas are not longer persuasive.

Since Senator Graham is so

Since Senator Graham is so eager to go to war with Iran, I suggest that he volunteer for it as a grunt. Want a war, volunteer for it. Otherwise shut up and stop volunteering others to do your dirty work for you.

Those of you who just voted

Those of you who just
voted the same far right charlatans back into power that made a mess of the country--this is exactly what you empowered with your vote.

Let's hope Obama comes down on Graham in a way he'll never forget.

I thought the lesson of

I thought the lesson of Vietnam was No More Vietnams!

If Hannity and the Reagan neocons want to start their third Vietnam in a generation, it shows they aren't just ignoring the lesson, they are purposely repeating the mistake over and over.

Let's leave foreign policy to someone who hasn't borrowed us into hundreds of billions in foreign debt. It's bad management - remember 2006 and 2008 when America threw them out disgusted with the military mistakes?

Senator Graham , you " Sir "

Senator Graham , you " Sir " and I use the term loosely, are a sick psychopath . Obviously your rants are made to please the Zionists so that you stay in their favor . People like you are not concerned about all the innocent lives lost with an all out WAR in Iran or even young innocent U.S. boys that are sent in harms way while you and yours stay at home attending cocktail parties and dining in fine restaurants . You " Sir " sold your soul for 10 Silver Sheckels . You are a TRAITOR . Never forget :
Duplicity , Treason and Murder ............

By the way , I forgot to

By the way , I forgot to mention , I am a true Conservative not a [ Trotskyite ] Neo Con

I think the next person who

I think the next person who wants war and those who vote for war should be the first ones to go to war.

It seems it is never too

It seems it is never too early for the Republicans to beat the drum for another war..

I'm from Canada & I never

I'm from Canada & I never thought the Jewish lobby would ever be as strong in Canada as it is in the USA; I was wrong & Corporate power is also as strong so we are a good place to give Zionist speeches. The population is not quite as dumbed down---yet; but real headway has been made. If we just had a few more churches we could be as nutty. As to the Iran war; it ain't gonna happen & I'll give you some reasons why. Number one would be the "Noor" anti ship missile "which the US will not have the codes for as the British did when the French builders gave them to the Brits. in the Falklands. With these hidden in the mountainous coast they will be easily able to sink a few oil freighters. After that, you will not be able to buy insurance to ship oil in the region so buy your bicycle now. The Iranians will start some serious meddling in Afghanistan, starting with modern "Stingers" & you can kiss that war goodbye. Iraq is right next door with a majority Shiite population & it won't take long to run the last of the US troops & bases out of the country & end the western buy up of their resources. Lastly; the way I read it, the Pentagon well understands this & will refuse to carry out the orders at the top. I won't even bother with the moral arguments as the US has none.

As far as I can discern,

As far as I can discern, there is no mention anywhere, from any US commentator, that unless and until there is general and complete disarmament of nuclear weapons on this planet, especially on the initiative of the US which has the preponderance of such weapons, and including our pop-off puppet Israel with its nuclear arsenal threatening the other people in the middle east, those making policy in Iran are no more likely than anyone else to cease efforts to obtain nuclear stand-off parity. And statements such as Graham's only feed that compulsion on the part of those not in the nuclear club and therefore defenseless against nuclear threats by the possessors of the means to destroy them.

And nuclear disarmament would have to be combined with all kinds of concessions to those who live in what are fast becoming failed states, with nothing or little to lose by using nuclear weapons, whether they acquire them on the sure-to-be-growing subterranean international market or build them themselves.

If the KuKluxicans want war

If the KuKluxicans want war with Iran, they'll have to have a draft first.

Then there will be a hell to pay in the streets.

I hope they do it--first thing after they shut down the government, and Obama offers to privatize social security to get them to start it up again.

Blart blart Zionists blart

Blart blart Zionists blart USS Liberty blart blart Israel lobby blart blart blart.

As if we couldn't possibly be stupid enough to do this sort of thing on our own, for our own shitty reasons.
