Today Is the Day

by: Michael Moore  |  MichaelMoore.Com | Op-Ed

This letter contains (almost) no criticisms of how the Democrats have brought this day of reckoning upon themselves. That -- and where to go from here -- will be the subject of tomorrow's letter.

Today, we have one job and one job only: Stop the return of the bigger criminal class, the Party of War, the people who (with a few Democratic enablers) manufactured the very mess we are in.

There is good news this morning: The final ABC/Washington Post poll shows that, among registered voters, people still say they prefer the Democrats over the Republicans by 5 percentage points. It's only when the pollsters ask "likely voters" who they want that the Republicans come out ahead by a few points.

So it's clear the majority of voters want the Dems, but the prediction is the Republicans will win because Dem voters are going to stay home.

So, our mission is simple: MAKE SURE NO ONE WE KNOW STAYS HOME TODAY. Here's what I am going to do right now and what I'm asking the millions of you reading this to join me in doing:

1. Email, call and/or text every non-Republican in your personal address book and remind them to vote Democratic today. If they (rightfully) complain that the Dems have been disappointing, tell them they're right, then ask them to watch this editorial by Rachel Maddow last night where she correctly lists the dozen or so things this Democratic congress did right -- the types of things we'll never see from the Republicans if they take over (equal pay for women act, taking student loans out of the greedy hands of the banks, funding for our first bullet trains, boosting veterans benefits after Bush refused to for 8 years, etc.).

2. Post a general reminder to vote (and who to vote for) on your facebook page and tweet it to your Twitter followers.

3. If you have the time, go down to a local candidate's HQ or the local Democratic Party office and offer to make calls or give people rides to the polls.

4. Think local. No matter where you are in America, there’s someone on the ballot today in your town who deserves your vote. Guaranteed. If you're in Wisconsin and you're pissed at Harry Reid for letting Joe Lieberman derail the public option on health care, don’t let that stop you from getting everyone you know to go vote for Russ Feingold. In Florida and furious at the way the Obama administration coddled Wall Street? All the more reason to call every single person you know in the Orlando area to go vote for Alan Grayson. In California and mad about the total Democratic failure on global warming? You can still change the world for the better by showing up with all your friends to vote for Prop 19 to legalize personal use of marijuana (and stop the record numbers of people we put in prison who don't belong there).

5. Explain to anyone who's given up and doesn't want to vote today that Obama was handed a terrible mess that he didn't create. He may now understand he's moved too slow and compromised too much on the big stuff that needed to get done (after all, Goldman Sachs was his #1 private contributor in the 2008 election). But in the last couple months he's made some good moves -- booting some generals, dumping economic advisor/wrecker Larry Summers, and hiring new people like consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren. Things are very bad right now. But they can get MUCH worse. War with Iran? A genuine worldwide Second Great Depression? A Republican Congress will spend every second trying to make it happen.

6. Finally, we must let the Democratic politicians know that our vote comes with one big condition: If they do not straighten up, get a spine and do what we expect of them, we will find alternate candidates to run against them in 2012. And we mean it. Go vote today, but also sign this petition that I'll deliver to every elected Democrat -- the "I'm Voting Democratic But I Will Work to Defeat You Next Time If You Don't Do Your Job" petition, aka "The Democrats on Probation" petition. Let's publicly put them on notice that we'll give them just two more years to start doing the things we elected them to do. If they move one more inch to the "center" or to the right, they will never get our vote again. And we mean business.

Bill Maher said, "We have a center-right party and a crazy party. Over the last 30 years, the Democrats have moved to the right, and the Republicans have moved into a mental hospital." That about sums it up. But he also said, "Sure, I'm mad at the Democrats. I'm also mad at my cell phone compnay. But I don't throw away my cell phone cause I'm mad and then rub dog shit on my teeth." We all know this isn't the best situation to be in. So consider this one last reason to get out and vote:

There are good people the country has never heard of who are running today all across America, most of them for the first time. Somewhere in this great land right now, the woman who will cast the deciding vote in the Senate for single payer in 2016 is running for mayor of your city in her first big race. Somewhere else, the person who will become the first female president of the United States in 2020 is running for the state house for the first time. Their careers will be over and that future will never be if you don’t show up today. Go to theballot.org, find out who’s great and running where you live, and then show up to vote for them. You may help light the spark that will save our sorry ass somewhere down the road. Don't just hold your nose today as you go in the booth -- go ignite a future revolution. The only thing that makes the corporate honchos happier than paying no taxes is making sure as few people vote as possible. They think they've bought this election.

Go prove them wrong.

Yours,
Michael Moore

There are two very funny

There are two very funny jokes here.

1) "Sure, I'm mad at the Democrats. I'm also mad at my cell phone compnay. But I don't throw away my cell phone cause I'm mad and then rub dog shit on my teeth."

2) Finally, we must let the Democratic politicians know that our vote comes with one big condition: If they do not straighten up, get a spine and do what we expect of them, we will find alternate candidates to run against them in 2012. And we mean it.

You really didn't have to

You really didn't have to read very far into this addleheaded drivel before concluding that you'd rather not continue. The other guys, the Republicans, you see, are the "bigger criminal class, the Party of War, the people who (with a few Democratic enablers) manufactured the very mess we are in", and they simply must be kept from power. Sure, Michael, you just keep believing that. In the meantime, I'll be staying away from the polls today so as to reflect on Mike Whitney's latest piece at Counterpunch:

Right on Mike, today is the

Right on Mike, today is the day to write in Ralph Nader for every TARP voting, War Supporting Democrat who is up for re-election, excluding heros like Feingold, of course.

A guard carrying a

A guard carrying a submachine gun has been posted outside the Madison Building of the Library of Congress at 101 Independence Ave. in the capital of the Fourth Reich.

I have passed this point three or four times a day for nearly two years, and they have NEVER done this before.

I know from friends who work in the Library that there are no security alerts in force.

This is clearly a gesture of intimidation by our new masters IN ADVANCE OF THE RESULTS OF THE RIGGED ELECTION!!!!

Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil!

Sorry Michael, I don't like

Sorry Michael, I don't like your docudrama scenario. Our system is broken beyond repair. It's time to start a new one. We can let this one fall on its' own dead weight while those who are in touch with reality start to build a new one. Plant a carrot and watch it grow.

This is hilarious - you want

This is hilarious - you want to put back the US to what?

You've allowed the Republican government to spend 1 TRILLION plus on useless domestic wars (Iraq/ Afghanistan), then complain when Obama wants to spend a tiny fraction of that on other benefits, such as veteran benefits, and healthcare.

Why not take some of that money and put it into housing or the economy? Sure Obama has not done anything radical, but I bet as soon as he put plans in place to pull out of those useless wars, you'd have called him a terrorist.

So, vote Republican, keep on pouring money into a useless cause while many starve at home. Feul the religious right, with their views against abortion, religious and sexula tolerance, gun ownership and disposession.

Nothing is more pathetic

Nothing is more pathetic than the posturing of "avant-garde, too-cool-to-vote" types. These people gave us W and now seem intent on delivering Speaker Boehner.

The Democrats are equally as

The Democrats are equally as guilty for the mess we are in. They were bought and paid for by the same nice folks that bought and paid for the Republicans. To the lobbyists it matters not who wins because everyone is in their pockets. It's a sad state when we are offered only the choice of who we feel will screw us the least and not who will serve the country best. My prediction is this: No change. No matter who is elected. After today it will go back to business as usual with a safety net of another two years.
"Checks and Balances" has become "You watch my back and I'll watch yours."

I don't care how you spell

I don't care how you spell it, it is pronounced "Boner".

Michael, how about helping us Iowa progressives with a fund raising speaking event? We have tried to reach you to extend an invitation without success. We hope Truthout can get this message to you. My email address: ChetGuinn@gmail.com

Someone owes you and the Democratic Party their vote, chief? Its precisely your kind of arrogance that makes serious people stay home on election day and, trust me, you'll be learning something about that arrogance
tonight. So in case you hadn't heard, my vote is earned, not owned by anyone.

serious people staying home on election day? are you an aspiring comedy writer? Because only the smallest, insignificant and ambiguous message can be derived from the number of people who stay home: a few more people are unhappy about the direction our country is going during a bad economy. ooohhh...very serious message there pal; you've just changed the political landscape!

Stalin still have your vote,

Ditto.

I just cannot imagine how Dem loyalists simply presume that my vote belongs to them without having to earn it. That's something beyond arrogance in my opinion, and in itself is reason enough not to vote for them.

And no, I'm not voting for republicans by withholding my vote from a democrat. How do I know? Because I didn't put my little check next to the republican, either.

But somehow Dem loyalists think that I did. And it's just that kind of thought terminating cliche that will preclude their learning anything from this.

Small Comfort? Can we take

Small Comfort? Can we take some small comfort, Michael, that they still bother to buy their toadies and not simply install them?

Congrats to non-voting

Congrats to non-voting "progressives". Boehner is Speaker and Feingold is out. Progress is on the march!

On the bright side: Dems

On the bright side:

Dems held the Senate and turned back tea party extremists. O'Donnell and Palladio were expected to go down, but Angle and Buck were not.

Also, in Colorado the radical "Personhood" and anti-tax initiatives were thoroughly defeated (3-1), and Hickenlooper defeated crazy Tancredo, keeping the state very blue.

Impatient divided government independents got their wish--which is, I believe, the real story of the cycle. I doubt, though, they will be happy with what they've bought in the House.

ATTENTION DEMOCRAT PARTY

ATTENTION DEMOCRAT PARTY SHILLS!

Please read Mike Whitney's latest article "Midterm Day of Reckoning"
www.counterpunch.org/whitney11022010.html

Then tell us which parts you don't understand.

"Stalin still have your

"Stalin still have your vote, 01:09?"

No, I stayed home yesterday. Stalin voted for one of the two ruling class parties.

"No matter where you are in

"No matter where you are in America, there’s someone on the ballot today in your town who deserves your vote."

Do not be so sure. On my ballot, there were three offices where the only candidates were Republicans. My town is so right-wing that Democrats often do not bother to run for offices.

Republicans will crow, but

Republicans will crow, but the GOP remains deeply unpopular. Any mischief from the House will go to die in the Senate--and on top of that we still hold the veto.

Also, the out-of-state corporate shadow groups that spent tens of millions to defeat Reid and Bennet just got a big fat rebuke. Couldn't you have found a better use for all that cash, jerks?

ATTENTION DEMOCRATIC PARTY

ATTENTION DEMOCRATIC PARTY SHILLS

I would also suggest reading Franklin C Spinney's Democratic Debacle article to help you understand what happened.
www.counterpunch.org/spinney11032010.html

But I doubt you will, for like he says in the conclusion, "These questions beg a long-term dispassionate inquiry by Democrats, if they truly want to build a meaningful self definition of who they are, which is now a necessary, if not sufficient, condition for evolving a realistic recovery strategy. Personally, I am not optimistic -- critical self examination is not the Democratic Party's strong suit; making excuses is."

Whitney misses, right off,

Whitney misses, right off, that Obama's approval rating remains higher than Reagan's at the same point in his first term.

He also perpetuates the myth that Obama was "picked by elites" when in fact he rode the biggest grassroots movement in American history to victory.

Further, Whitney rather conveniently conflates the dissatisfactions of independents with those of "progressives"--which are quite different, in reality. And it's independents who made the difference yesterday, not stay-at-home "progressives".

Independents, btw, do not like the Republicans. They simply like divided government and are impatient with the economy. Yesterday's results were fairly typical for a mid-term. Overall, the Dems did not fare badly, holding the Senate and retaining their majority leader against expectation. Meanwhile, most of the Tea Party extremist candidates for the Senate lost. The saddest thing was Feingold's loss.

Oh, yes, the election

Oh, yes, the election results no doubt hinged on the 5 TO Stalinists who stayed home yesterday . . .

"critical self examination

"critical self examination is not the Democratic Party's strong suit; making excuses is"

Lessons unlearned I see. Status quo triumphant.

Everyone has their spin on

Everyone has their spin on the results. Jim DeMint and Sarah Palin say they mean Obama should move to the right.

The fact, though, is that the election was decided by independents unhappy with both parties--and who actually give the GOP a 5% lower approval rating than the Dems. The indies trusted the GOP with the House (where elections occur every 2 yrs) but not with the bigger prize, the Senate. And they turned back the craziest tea party candidates: O'Donnell, Angle, Buck.

Blue Dogs got thumped, so we have an excellent opportunity now for driving the Dems more toward the left. Let's not pass it up.

Another silver lining: "Due

Another silver lining:

"Due to extensive losses by conservative and moderate Democrats, another shift in power occurred in the House last night besides Republicans taking the majority. The Congressional Progressive Caucus has replaced the Blue Dogs and the New Democrats as the plurality ideological caucus among House Democrats. For the first time ever, the CPC is larger than Blue Dogs and New Dems combined."

--Chris Bowers, Daily Kos

Now, we need to retake the House with this plurality still in tact.

Well, it's disheartening to

Well, it's disheartening to see the results today. I felt a little better reading Bill Moyer's speech. I voted early, and we didn't have any real progressive choices; indeed, one was a Republican running unopposed, and 2 were conservative activist judges running unopposed for 6 year terms. In my district, a real progressive tried to challenge the Democratic incumbent for his house seat and only took several thousand votes, in a small city known for being "progressive." He supported single payer, and was endorsed by Donna Smith, and was opposed to our military involvements. Yet, after all the griping and complaining by our population as to how the Democrats don't measure up -- and with this lukewarm incumbent, who "plays the game well," sits on the armed services committee, puts the military recruiters in our local schools, voted for another 55 billion for Afghanistan, and opposed single payer and didn't stand up for a robust public option -- they voted for him again, and he went to the ballot against a Republican who was more progressive on saving social security.

So this is where we talk to Michael and get to feel heard, afterwards ?

Perhaps ...

Michael, I voted for the schmuck, early, and turned in my ballot with a cold steely feeling inside me, unlike any other sensation with which I have ever voted with.

I could no longer stand the pain, the anger, the frustration .. I think you know what I mean. But I knew, whatever the results, it would not be anything to cheer about.

This is what I think you should do, Michael, because you have a powerful pulpit for this country.

continued

We need

(1) Focus on issues. Your website is covering just too much, and the American people are too simple minded. I would choose something like health care and go for it all the way.

(2) Since elections are basically worthless, and only worth voting in (with low expectation of outcome) because it's a very easy act, and very easy to access which ones are relatively better, we need to use another approach. The 2 improvements I come up with are

(a) A single minded focus on pressuring major media sources - like Huffington Post, for example - to stop giving so much attention to the rabid right -- and give that much attention, instead, to progressive leaders on the focused issue (i.e. HEALTH CARE) -- leaders, like Dennis Kucinich or John Conyers. Just imagine if either of their faces appeared in Huffington Post EVERY DAY AND THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME AND SPACE as Sarah Palin or a couple of other regulars they capitalistically promote.

(b) A campaign focused on the pocketbooks. The only thing these folks understand is the sound of the cash register. In health care, as my example, we have to target the money being taken in by the health insurance companies, and, the power that is NOT being implemented enough, and effectively enough, by doctors, who are essentially, for all their support for reform, working for these companies and helping to keep the system going.

Well take my advice on those couple of matters, Michael, with your influence, and I think we would see some positive steps towards real change.

That is my opinion.

It's a little hard for me to watch you stump for the Democrats, even though I too voted for them in the end, because I know how horrible the Republicans are.

The only silver lining I can find is that perhaps Boehner will make good on his promise to destroy the health bill entirely so that we can get real legislation passed. My guess, however, is that the Republicans do NOT intend to repeal it, but degrade it. And they know that's about as far as they could get, too.

Thank you, Michael, for the work you keep doing. We love you out here in the tiny corners of America.
