HuffPost Bloggers Threaten Boycott Over AOL Merger
Bloggers and writers for the Huffington Post feel betrayed by HuffPost founder Arianna Huffington's decision to sell her left-leaning news site to AOL. A blog post from the Adbusters web site claims that The Huffington exploited thousands of indie and liberal bloggers and is now cashing in by selling out to a "mega-corp." "But the Huffington Post is not Arianna's to sell," the Adbusters blog reads. "It is ours: the lefty writers and readers, environmentalism activists and anti-corporate organizers who flooded the site with 25 million visits a month." The blog announces a campaign to "Huff & Puff it down" by boycotting the site and promoting true independent blogs through Twitter.
Poll: Most Americans Oppose Republican Plots Against EPA
Republicans in Congress are promoting bold plans to curtail the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) expanded power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and hold industries accountable for pollution under the Clean Air Act, but most Americans want Congress to leave the EPA alone, according to a new poll released by environmental group the National Resource Defense Council. The poll reports that 77 percent of Americans said, "Congress should let the EPA do its job."
Republicans Attempt to Defund Planned Parenthood
Republicans launched a new effort to defund Planned Parenthood this week, according to The Hill. A spending resolution announced by House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky) would strip $327 million in Title X funding for low-income individuals who visit Planned Parenthood and other health clinics that offer reproductive health services. The Title X funds do not pay for abortion services, but conservatives in Congress are making good on a pledge to eliminate federal funding to pro-choice clinics.
Unemployment Claims Drop to Lowest Level Since 2008
In the past week, the number of Americans filing for state unemployment benefits fell 36,000 from the previous week to a seasonally adjusted figure of 383,000, according to the Labor Department. Reuters reports that the number is the lowest since July 2008, and the Labor Department reports that layoffs decreased in several sectors.

Thu, 02/10/2011 - 18:09 — Ron (not verified)Oh come on! So the bloggers and writers leave Huffpo. AOL will have bought a name for all it's millions, as all the talent goes elsewhere. Mark my words, people will laugh at how badly they got taken and essentially bought nothing more than a domain name. Could this be the death knell of AOL?

Thu, 02/10/2011 - 18:44 — Anonymous (not verified)When I heard the news about the Huffpo sale, I canceled my RSS feed and deleted the link in my browser. If I want to read corporate media, I have many other choices.
Unemployment claims dropped
Thu, 02/10/2011 - 19:18 — Chris Lyon (not verified)Unemployment claims dropped ....... hmmm, I wonder how many of those 36,000 hit their 99 week limit on collecting benefits? Thus, they are no longer counted. Not employed mind you, we just don't count anymore. I am one statistic that is not longer counted.
So Ariana figured out the
Fri, 02/11/2011 - 01:55 — UnEasyOne (not verified)So Ariana figured out the most lucrative way yet to exploit progressive idealism without, you know, actually being progressive.
When multiple commenters at her site bemoaned the lousy aim of the bombers who tried to take out the criminal Cheney in Afghanistan, she couldn't get to a mic fast enough - bragging that they had all been taken down/deleted. ASAP. That's when I saw the writing on the wall.
She had a perfect right to do that, of course; I had a perfect right to do what I did.
I unsubscribed, never commented there again, and except for following a few links, never visited there again, either.
I would be disappointed - if I had ever believed she was a liberal in the first place. Or the second. Or at all.
If Arianna has been conning
Fri, 02/11/2011 - 04:33 — Anonymous (not verified)If Arianna has been conning all of us in making us think she was a liberal she's done a pretty good job. She is often on panels defending the progressive line, but has also chastised appropriately. I did find her switch from a Republican husband's supporter, here in California, (many of us didn't like her then), to liberal rather abrupt and but not impossible.
Let's hope that with all those millions she is going to get, she will spread some of that money around to all those liberal writers and bloggers that made her site so successful.
We will see, and we're watching Arianna.
I can't believe she is
Fri, 02/11/2011 - 09:28 — Heidi (not verified)I can't believe she is selling to AOL. Their news pages read like the news publications at the check out stand and they are anything but liberal, let alone progressive. I am truly shocked and disappointed in Arianna.
