Our Big, Fat, Invisible Wars
(Image: Lance Page / t r u t h o u t; Adapted: DVIDSHUB, Jiří Děcký, Rishi Bandopadhay)

In the final days of a midterm campaign, marked by hyper-bipartisanship; Tea Party warnings about how Obama was dragging America down the dark corridor of liberal fascism; an astounding display of issues based on the American public's fears of Muslims, Arabs, Latinos, gay couples, soldiers, medical marijuana, mosques, "Obama-care," vague charges of higher taxes; and Obama's alleged plan to turn this country into a socialist state, the president decided to make a high-profile pitch six days before the election.

Appearing on Comedy Central's "Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, the president joined a small pantheon of acting and former heads of state like Pervez Musharraf, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Evo Morales and Bill Clinton to sit down for some casual conversation peppered with quips and yuks.

After almost a full minute of wildly enthusiastic applause from an audience that probably still has their "HOPE" bumper stickers, the president took a seat across from Stewart for a mostly jovial back-and-forth in which Obama spoke about health care reform, financial regulatory reform, insurance premiums, the misuse of the filibuster, negative campaign ads, stabilizing the stock market, staggering job losses and a fragile economy that marked what he called "the two toughest years of any time since the Great Depression."

And, yet, there was one subject that was never discussed, not even in passing, during the 25-minute interview. That's right - you guessed it - the $1.1 trillion invisible campaign issue, America's pernicious nine-year-old War on Terror (oh yeah, the war ... ).

Stewart asked the president if he was surprised that "even [his] base can be disappointed" and yet he never once uttered the words "Afghanistan," "Iraq" or "Pakistan." The complete lack of even an oblique reference to what both Obama and Bush have made the centerpiece of their foreign policy, if not their entire presidency, is pretty remarkable, but sadly indicative of how, after a decade of war with close to 6,000 American troops killed, almost 50,000 American soldiers still in Iraq, nearly 100,000 in Afghanistan and an undeclared, virtually unscrutinized predator drone war in Pakistan that has more than tripled in number of strikes since Obama took office, it doesn't even merit a mention in an interview with the commander in chief less than a week before midterm elections.

One can only assume that the White House offered Stewart a one-on-one with Obama on the condition that there was to be absolutely no mention of the wars, the troops, terror threats, predator drones, Guantanamo, the Taliban, al-Qaeda, Iran, North Korea, or anything with even the slightest whiff of war.

It's hard to imagine a sitting American president going on any television talk show less than a week before midterm elections without setting some sort of topic guidelines. And if that's the case, would you blame Stewart for accepting some restrictions in order to get the biggest of Big Cheeses onto his stage?

But if that was not the case, then why would Stewart completely ignore the war in Afghanistan, which earlier this year he called "a losing battle"?

The problem here goes far beyond an overly padded joust-lite between the president and the comedian. The problem is really with all of us - the people who vote, pay taxes and ultimately fund these wars. The real question isn't why didn't Stewart press Obama on the wars, but why aren't we?

In case you haven't noticed how few Americans are making any noise about the wars, The New York Times reported on it last week.

This kind of selective blindness to the $1.1 trillion armed gorilla in the room isn't restricted to voters. Pick a few of your favorite Congressional candidates (difficult, I know ...) and go to their campaign web site and look under "Issues." Where are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq or even Iran listed, and what do they say? Here are a few examples of what is and isn't being said about the wars.

Harry Reid (D-Nevada): Nothing on the wars, just a section labeled "Veterans."

Sharron Angel (R- Nevada): Under "National Security and Public Protection" - "Sharron Angle is a staunch supporter of the U.S. military and will work tirelessly to secure the peace and security of our country. She supports strong sanctions against rogue nations that export, support or harbor terrorism and believes that we must do whatever necessary to protect America from terrorism."

Barbara Boxer (D-California):  Sections for agriculture, Armenian community, LGBT, seniors, and 16 other issues, but nothing on the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Carly Fiorina (R- California): Under "Protecting America" - "Carly also views defeating the terrorist threat in Afghanistan as an imperative that requires military commitment, economic development and diplomatic energy. To achieve victory, it is critically important to continue listening to our commanders on the ground and to stay until our job is done." There is no mention of Iraq or Pakistan.

And in my home state of Hawaii, this from the web site of incumbent Republican Congressman Charles Djou under "National Security"  - "... I understand that we must combat terrorism where it is found, whether in Iran, the Pakistan-Afghanistan border regions or in industrialized cities around the world ..."

His Democratic opponent, Hawaii State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa writes (under "Afghanistan") - "We need to understand that our nation's public policy focus in Afghanistan is very different from that of Iraq ... I support President Obama's decision to send over 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan to assist existing forces in stabilizing the region. While I have always had grave concerns about our military involvement, especially when lacking a clear purpose or clear exit plan, I recognize that for us to be able to accomplish our goals in the Middle East we need to provide our men and women of the Armed Forces with the resources and numbers they need. The sobering reality is that 9/11 did occur and it could very well happen again. We need take all reasonable actions necessary to ensure that it doesn't happen again."

Wow. With a position like that, who needs the GOP? But at least she and Djou mention the wars. That's more that can be said for most of us, including President Obama and Stewart.

One person who hasn't overlooked the wars is Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! Speaking on CNN the day before the Obama-Stewart bit, she referred to the underreporting of WikiLeaks' largest classified military leak in history saying, "war is an election issue ... I think it's why Obama is president today." Goodman said that Obama's Afghanistan surge may play a role in possible Democratic losses in the elections.

Unlike most politicians, pundits and media, Amy Goodman does make the connection between the wars and our anemic economy. "You relate [the wars] directly to jobs at home," she said, "You're talking about billions of dollars, actually $3-5 trillion according to Nobel economist Joe Stiglitz, is being spent on these wars ... We're talking about hundreds of thousands of jobs that could [be had] by people in this country with some of the highest unemployment rates we've ever seen, if we weren't spending this money in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan."

On the very day Obama and Stewart were not discussing the wars, the Department of Justice announced yet another arrest of a US citizen, this time suspected of plotting an attack planting bombs in the Washington, DC, Metrorail system. But where are the voices pointing out the very obvious cause-and-effect relationship between our war making and those seeking vengeance against us? (Sound of wind blowing ...) We continue on our reckless journey with scarcely a whisper of dissent.

Never mind the latest WikiLeaks documents indicate an additional 15,000 Iraqi civilians (five times the number killed on 9/11) died violently during the war launched by the 2003 US invasion.

Never mind that Aaron Glantz recently reported between 2005 - 2008, three times as many veterans died or committed suicide shortly after returning from war than in the war itself.

Never mind that US military "kill teams" are being charged with random murders and collecting their Afghan victims' body parts as trophies.

And never mind the hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers whose killings and disfigurement go unreported or are reduced to a momentary blip on the screen in the wake of the wars we are fighting, or the unpredictable number of people we are inspiring to attack our country from without and within.

War is what we do and once it's underway, it appears American politicians, the public and media see increasingly little need or desire to discuss or debate it, lest we distract ourselves from planning the next war looming on the horizon.

Turning back to review the transcript of the Obama-Stewart interview using the edit and find functions, I discovered that "war" does in fact appear 52 times in the interview - as part of the words "forward," "reward" and, of course, "Stewart."

Since 2001, Democrats and Republicans alike have encouraged, enabled and ignored our wanton war making, squandering hundreds of thousands of lives, destroying families, homes, communities and even countries while eviscerating our own economy and social infrastructure. It is unconscionable that we, the citizens who vote and pay taxes to this government should remain mute, distracted or apathetic, saying and doing nothing, as if the whole thing has been forgotten or, worse yet, simply accepted as just the way America does business in the 21st century.

Thanks for this insightful

Thanks for this insightful article.
Too bad "Orwellian" is out of fashion.
It's still the best word to describe this collective brainwashing.

BRILLIANT

BRILLIANT

War is America's Identity

War is America's Identity and Business. Fantastic article. Worship of war, soldiers and the US military has been brainwashed into almost all segments of American society. In fact, here on Truthout you often see war lovers praising US soldiers, and defending US wars of hegemony all the way back to Vietnam, as if invading and killing are somehow heroic. Think of how many Americans are paid by the military-defense industries, all of which are financed by tax dollars. But until Americans renounce war, quit working for defense contractors, stop volunteering for the military, stop giving huge $$$ to veterans, and spend the money on peacemakers instead, war will continue to rule our country.

These "wars" are NOT about

These "wars" are NOT about protecting America,... they ARE about siphoning off taxpayer dollars into huge corporations.

The gargantuan military-industrial behemoth owns the companies that make the planes, weapons, ammo and all the other stuff like fuel, bandages, tires, uniforms, and piles of other stuff. BUT, they need for us to actually USE UP all these products so that they can keep making more and charging the tax payers for it. Countries where people can't read, worship cows, and live in the tenth century make great targets. AND, if we can use the lower socio-economic level of American citizens as our forces, well,... that helps decrease the poor population in America too.

War is really, REALLY profitable busine$$!

I love Jon Stewart, yet he

I love Jon Stewart, yet he is Jewish and his ilk thinks killing Muslims is okay, so he bashes Iran and ignores the endless wars.

Pathetic, fascist, war

Pathetic, fascist, war mongering amerika exists in the ever increasing 51st state- the state of denial ! To be positive : imperialist amerika is collapsing faster all the time; World Peace can only happen with and end to amerikas military machine !

Excellent observations and

Excellent observations and commentary. I noticed the exact same omissions while I watched the Stewart-Obamah hour conversation. I saw the same irresponsibility go on with his and Colbert's Washington Rally. Painful too that candidates ignored this war. Sweeping it under the rug as if not talking about it will make it disappear. Big applauds for Amy Goodman, as always making the connections.

Thanks for your work. Keep it up.

The issue of war is

The issue of war is absolutely necessary to address, and the author makes some very good points, but he admits that "One can only assume that the White House offered Stewart a one-on-one with Obama on the condition that there was to be absolutely no mention of the wars, the troops, terror threats, predator drones, Guantanamo, the Taliban, al-Qaeda, Iran, North Korea, or anything with even the slightest whiff of war.one can only assume ..."
and ass-u-me is always a very shaky ground on which to base an argument.
I am disappointed with Truthout.

I agree that the wars are

I agree that the wars are not on American's radar, but I hardly think that Jon Stewart is to blame. He's a comedian not a journalist or politician. Nowhere was that more evident than at the recent "Rally to Restore Sanity" which could have been a serious call for action but actually didn't get much further than it's name.

Stewart didn't rake Obama over the coals about the wars because that's not his job. Did anyone put a target on Johnny Carson's back for not asking Nixon the hard questions about Vietnam?

Instead of speculating on what kind of secret agreement the White House had with Comedy Central while offering no evidence of any kind, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work. If this nation wants change we are going to have to stop writing fluff about comedians and get serious about journalism.

Maybe he did not ask about

Maybe he did not ask about the war because he is running a COMEDY SHOW. Maybe use a better example next time.

Susan's right; ObamaCo may

Susan's right; ObamaCo may not have laid preconditions on Stewart; he might just be another self-censoring media tool.
I think if you really want to know what's important to the imperial authorities and the plutocracy, look at what's not being discussed in the corporate press, or discussed in very controlled, elided terms. 9/11, for one, is almost completely taboo (unless it's toeing the company line).

Did you mean invisible or

Did you mean invisible or did you mean invincible wars or even divisible.

The one argument gainst the

The one argument gainst the Iraq war is seldom mentioned:Namel, Why is it being fought?

The power game means full

The power game means full throttle war and power mongering or crash and die. The tony inside the beltway set look down their noses on this sort of prattle, suggesting we simply don't understand what a dangerous world this is, and, unless the U.S. takes charge of it, our way of life is toast. Both major parties follow it, and the media do what they are told.

I've spent the last few

I've spent the last few weeks writing comments wherever possible saying this. It is scandalous. The seeds of a solution to many of America's problems lie in getting out, but since the real President of the country is Petraeus we won't be out for a long time. We are Germany, 1930s style!

17:30 antisemite+--Consider

17:30 antisemite+--Consider this: might be that war is too ugly to be presented in a comic/comedian structure AT ALL--I don't expect to find it on SLN or even from Archie Bunker. Is not that what REGULAR news is for?AmyGoodman Democracy Now! is an entirely different type of show--like are you all too dumb enough to notice that??You all are comparing oranges to apples here. Why do not you be grateful for the little that was accomplished and said? Talk about internal division! What a bunch of luxurious nickpickers.

Excellent observations and

Excellent observations and information. Personally I've reached a point at 60 something years where the federal government and especially the defense (offense?) department seems almost totally out of touch with reality and not responsive to anything I think or my friends think.

I suspect many Americans feel the same way. Many are also so pressed with immediate financial concerns, as am I, that much of what government does is simply beyond our ability to do anything about it.

I've been hearing "demonstrate" or "vote" or take other action for decades, but we're still having wars, still trying to force others to do our bidding and still acting like a global cop, at the very least. Still the mainstream opinion is focused on how Americans are vulnerable to an "enemy" that has now shrunk from the USSR to small nations to tribes of terrorists. There is little recognition of the historic facts, specifically that government has learned nothing from Viet Nam or dozens of other corporate-military actions.

This is a tragedy and I feel it every day when I think of the soldiers or read a story about the wars. At the end of the day I've come to the view that the federal government is simply lost in a paradigm that doesn't work and never will because there is no right way to do a wrong thing.

I might add that I am now fearful of the federal government. I do not trust Congress or the presidency or the Supreme Court. I see the work government does in the fields I know, transportation and energy, and I usually see incompetence on a staggering scale, and most notably ignorance of what's going on in our own country.

I also think the wars generally have nothing to do with security and everything to do with continuing the flow of easy money to a bunch of companies who couldn't make it in the private sector because they make nothing of any use but the tools of fear.

In sum, I think the only rational action at this point in our history is local, at the city and county level. In time, hopefully, the changes made will be noticed by our government. Hopefully in the process many Americans will stop assuming that all power and all wisdom stems from Washington, and recognize the source of power and change is not in any institutions it is in them.

Stay tuned. There is a

Stay tuned. There is a coalition building in, of course, Berkeley, which is close to going very public to talk about the Wars, their cost, and the damage to the American economy.

Well, I for one have been

Well, I for one have been characterizing them as W's Whoppers since the Bush Wars' internationally criminal and anti-Constitutional illegal inception; and Obummer as their White House-slave, now escalating and widening their wars of aggression, as the Bush Shadow (BS) Buffalo Soldier-in-chief! (As well as attending every available anti-Bush War demonstration since Iran-Contra!)! What more legal opposition affords itself except the abjectly Obamical?!!

As a veteran anti-war

As a veteran anti-war protester from the Vietnam era, having then gone apolitical from 1973-2003, I was reawakened and outraged by the "Imperial Hubris" of the Bush administration. I looked around and wondered, "Where is the anti-war movement today?" I supported and volunteered during the ANSWER-sponsored anti-war rally in D.C. last February where buses came from all over the east coast bringing activists. When it was all said and done I was incredulous the event drew only 5-10,000. I was expecting at least a few hundred thousand. Rather than making a statement in Layfayette Park, it looked more like some kind of sick joke. In a nation of over 300 million, we can't get more than a few thousand to show up in D.C. to protest these wars? The apathy in this country is palpable.

Stewart is politically aware

Stewart is politically aware and expresses his views often, even thought he is a comedian he still could use his popularity to spread awareness on the war, as many comedians do. However, he is bound by certain restrictions as well.

I think that the author of this piece wants to let us know that the war has been hidden from us and that we need to overcome the censoring of it, that as the people we have the responsibility to stand up and be heard. We have the responsibility of deciding whether our government still retains its mandate to rule.

Disagree, Stewart went out

Disagree, Stewart went out of his way to ask some tough questions about other issues, and if you watch his show enough you'll see that he as well as the public are tired of non stop war war war on the tv. Also it was Bush's war not Obamas.

still, the narrative of this

still, the narrative of this article misses the target. how can we demand attention to the wars in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan if we are not examining the core issue, the corpus of lies that is Sept 11. Anyone who still reads articles criticizing Bush or Obama needs to get a foot loose of those sour names as they're just figureheads. People don't clamor for attention to the wars because they think their voices won't be heard due to corruption. If they only knew what kind of animal this gov't truly is they would know even further not to bother with that route. We need an insurrection of consciousness and this article is great, but still panders to the idea that "the masses" are to blame for not using the democratic system enough for their needs. IT'S NOT "our" fault that important issues are protected by govt and media silence. Once you accept that we live in a new kind of totalitarian government, you will see that the people's powerlessness comes from a lack of clarity about reality (ie TRUTH), NOT a malaise or apathy ... at this point EVERYONE should be speaking out clearly about what they know is true, including the writers of articles like this. At this point it is more important to damage the prestige of all false narratives, INCLUDING EVEN that shown by this very insightful piece. I believe that to end on this note------- "It is unconscionable that we, the citizens who vote and pay taxes to this government should remain mute ... as if the whole thing has been forgotten or, worse yet, simply accepted..." --------only perpetuates the myth that our apathy is to blame.

journalists, innovate a

journalists, innovate a way to betray your sympathies. or else we will lose everything.

I couldn't agree more. This

I couldn't agree more.

This monstrosity has devoured our tax resources, killed and maimed our young, killed millions world wide and reduced countries to chaos. It has disgraced us in the world and continually threatens to turn every American into a walking target.

The more we spend, the more we war, producing our enemies and hatred exponentially. The blowback from its violence created is the sole justification for their own national insecurity state.

While money matters little when death is the discussion, It is also the heart and soul of the deficit. But it will be programming for poor and the safety of the immigrant who will be sacrificed for this disaster, if we are not actively, determined and vigilant.

While will continue, forever, our wars.

There is never a serious

There is never a serious discussion for peace on Television. Television is run by the same power elites who control the president's policy. America has become hypnotized by the constant brainwashing on TV. Television has ruined democracy by creating sheeple zombies who vote for people who propagate the wars and are sending their jobs overseas and destroying the world. It's a good article but TV, magazines, radio, newspapers all seem to have the same agenda. America is a mindless mishmosh bent on total destruction.

17:30 Go look in a mirror...

17:30 Go look in a mirror... what you see looking back is a bigot! I know more than a few if "his ilk", I'm married to one and my children are Jewish as well and I can tell you before God, that not one of them wanted us to invade Iraq and a bunch of Muslims.

Peace is bad for business,

Peace is bad for business, so is being mindful of the environment or treating the weak and vulnerable with compassion. These are all shortcomings of capitalism.

Well, by golly, that's how

Well, by golly, that's how we did business in the 20th century too!

It WAS Bush's war, but, by

It WAS Bush's war, but, by continuing it, it is now OBAMA's war. Every time he asks Congress for money to fight this war, he is assuming more responsibility for it. Every time Congress gives him more money, THEY are adding their own culpability. I don't know how America can get out of this morass. Will putting Repubs in office change this endless flow of money into killing fields? I doubt it. Will a Repub sweep in the next election do it? Only if they run on a platform of ending the war in Afghanistan. And if they do, I will naively vote for them, knowing it is an empty promise.

17:30, According to your

17:30, According to your absurd logic, why you then think Obama or the many gentiles who support him, do so? Because, in their heart of hearts, they're Jewish? You sound like the antithesis of those who accuse Obama of being a Muslim. When are anti-semites like yourself going to get it through your thick heads that this is not about people's ethnic or religious heritage, but about big corporate money? (Of which, btw, Muslims and Christians play quite a big role, too. Duh ...) People like yourself really clog the drain, or, dilute the draino, with your stupid, bigoted notions.

Schools have kids 'honor'

Schools have kids 'honor' the man in uniform. WHY?? Cause they put on a uniform and go out and kill innocent people, pillage and rape at will. What a thing to honor.
No one is thinking for themselves any longer. An agenda for education system is not to think but regurgitate insignificant information. Dumbed down science, bought science. Religion gone crazy. Politics with no truth spoken. If you don't think we aren't living '1984' you are out of touch and not looking at what is happening around you on all levels. The wealthy international corporations run and rule this world and America's military do their bidding. They own the media and the population will continue to live in ignorance. The two party system is in reality ONE system made to look like two. This way you think you have a choice. It doesn't matter who is in office as the agenda will continue to strip and break this country of it's wealth period. People were so fed up with Bush and his animals, now Obama is carrying it further. Change? Ha, the only change is in your pocket. This is no change and there won't be any. The agenda set by a few is set, and they have all the money.

Great article. The

Great article. The interview was obviously geared to get the vote out for Democrats. So why would they even bring up the Democrats' biggest failure?

The Democrats have always voted with the war machine. It was a concern, during the campaign, of a few (who were consistently censored by aggressive others), that Obama's fine words about how he didn't support, weren't supported by a presence in Congress during the vote. He attacked Clinton for supporting the war, but then he picked a VP partner who voted for it, as well. And the entire grassroots campaign was in a major state of denial when it came to his views on Afghanistan. They were totally ignorant of these views, even though it was posted at the campaign website, and Obama was interviewed about it on, none other than, Billy O'Reilly.

We see what we want to see. It's otherwise too painful.

Not to mention the total stupidity of their waging physical war on, in some respects, an abstract entity. And you can't shoot and kill an idea that's networked without borders.

continued It's just a money

continued

It's just a money making venture for an assortment of sick minded, wealthy people. It's obvious that, if you don't want another 9-11, you improve screening at the airport borders. Real screening, that is. Meaning, not Cat Stevens.

In the meantime, we are being sucked dry as a nation by these corporate entities who are buying off our Congress and President. Our apathy is also evident in the increased public school presence of military propaganda. As if this is par for the course, when it isn't.

The sweet drug of gradualism is what the American public is continually imbibing. More potent than any marijuana plant.

It's encouraging, however, to see all the aware comments following this article. They don't want us to know how strong we are in numbers.

As much as I liked the fact

As much as I liked the fact that the rally for sanity could produce more people than Beck's hate march on the anniversary of Dr. King's speech .. there were a number of things I didn't like about it:

(1) That Americans need media show hosts to get them at demonstrations, and overnight;

(2) That the demonstrators didn't carry signs about any domestic and international issues ... everything was about being "nice" ... and when "nice" obviously hasn't gotten Obama anywhere except a more empowered far right.

In the back of a lot of thsoe "nice" people's minds, I suspect they think, "Maybe they're right .. maybe we really DO need to be in Afghanistan. And who's going to fight this war for us, after all? Not my son or daughter! It's going to have to be .. (maybe someone from the Dream Act? Maybe a red state fan?)

We need to get out of Afghanistan NOW. We never should have gone in, to begin with. But not many liberals were willing to put themselves out there as opposed to that venture, when it was first starting.

I'm at peace with myself. They didn't listen to me then, and they're not listening to me now.

The war cost is NOT $1.1

The war cost is NOT $1.1 trillion. It is greater than $7 trillion. How pathetic---Jon Letman's, and Truthout's, swallowing the government's pablum. True factual details bear little notice in Truthout's publications.

Congress is dedicated to our

Congress is dedicated to our role as the World's Cop. The rest of us are subjugated to that purpose, no matter the cost, no matter the national degradation, no matter what happens to .. "the United States of America" ..

How many people are writing

How many people are writing the principals of America's high schools asking that they do not allow military recruiters? When are our educational leaders going to take a strong, outspoken position on behalf of American students?

One trillion every year for

One trillion every year for the last 8 years is the correct number...8 or 9 TRILLION and we can't get health care or roads sewers, trains, water lines reservoirs, etc. because we are broke. Have to give our tax money to crooked government leaders, theirs and ours. Why don't we stop telling the lies...We are no longer the richest nation in the world. It is China and the Arab nations folks and we owe them and our credit cards have all been maxed out. We are a third world country now going the way Uganda.

Not so surprising, really.

Not so surprising, really. If you ask a fish to point out the elements in its environment, the last thing it would think to mention is water.

Here's an absurd option:

Here's an absurd option: make out your tax checks to Dept of Health and Welfare, or Social Security Administration, or any entity other than the IRS.

If the bulk of the money we give to Uncle goes to support Pentagon and Defense ideas of how to spend it, and since we know these guys are either clueless about bookkeeping or worked for producers in Hollywood who taught them how to cook the books, we need to not give them money to play with anymore.

The debt as I predicted in

The debt as I predicted in 2006 would be by 2010, is $19.3 trillion, including the $5.9 trillion Clinton Surplus which Greenspan and O'Neil planned for Social Security, was blown by Bush, $2.3 trillion stolen from Americans by Big Oil which Obama ignores even to this day, the war at $11.1 trillion on the wars, of which debt Obama extended. What we need is a Social Revolution. Allow the South and Texas to secede, seal all the northwestern states into one large state, and the rest of America will show up for elections as Progressive. Allow all spending to be subject to referendum and here will be the result. The south will go broke engaging themselves in civil wars and overspending on defense. Let them opt out of Social Security and they will soon be Gone With The Wind, as will Neo-con Fascism.

PS Right now tax Outsourcing Corporations, LLC’s and Independent Outsourcing Contractors Union scale plus 15% for each job Outsourced. Cap CEO/executive Comp-Packs at 25 times average employee Comp Packs, and cap top wages at $2.5 Million.

For all the pious posturing

For all the pious posturing on both sides of the aisle, war is this country's religion and money is its god. Period.

Right on truth out! This

Right on truth out! This must of been what it was like when the Calvary slaughtered this Nation's original Native Americans. This is what it must have been like when Hitler was waging wars and slaughtering anyone he disapproved of. Just like this happening while many people were oblivious, could care less or happily huddled in their own private hells fearful and grateful that it was somewhere else and not them.

If taxes pay for war,

If taxes pay for war, taxpayers are culpable.
Also, the wars won't stop if the US goes pacifist. There are many profiteers ready to take our place.

In response to "Concerned

In response to "Concerned Parent and Citizen":

We can thank George Bush for the military recruiters in our schools. Go ahead and Google it in connection with the "No Child Left Behind" Act.

"In 2002 the Bush administration passed the No Child Left Behind Act with a small, unpublicized provision: Section 9528, "Armed Forces Recruiter Access to Students and Student Recruiting Information:' requires high schools to give all student contact information to the military. Most students aren't aware they can opt out by filling out a form." And so, not only are high schools REQUIRED to give the information, but there are recruiters present every single day in the lunch room to spread the propaganda and encourage enlistment to any curious child or those who want to "get away from home", etc.

maybe Obama hasnt the

maybe Obama hasnt the control of everything there are secret people that commit stuff like whats going on in Iraq

I am not surprised that

I am not surprised that neither of them spoke of the wars, which are not popular, very expensive and not a feather in president obama's cap, even though he did not start them, he just got stuck with them.

So considering that Stewart supports the Democrats, and he is a comedian, I am not upset that he did not try to make President Obama look bad. The Republicans, who started these two wars, and allowed 9/11 to happen are doing enough bashing. I for one think THE REST OF THE MEDIA WORLD should be bashed for their terrible job , FOR HELPING GET US INTO THIS WAR, AND FOR HELPING THE REPUBLICANS WIN BY REPEATING THEIR LIES.

Why doesn't anyone report on

Why doesn't anyone report on the combat brigades we still have in Iraq? The blog at G2mil has a list! Isn't that newsworthy?

The biggest omission of all

The biggest omission of all is the fiction of 9/11. It was an elaborate conspiracy. It illustrates how our country is totally controlled by all the those who have power which includes all of us that collectively have the ultimate power.

Imagine that it is a fact now that Araabs conspired to attack us! That the impact of two jetliners could collapse two giant towers that were engineered to withstand such a collision! Yet we now all believe it.

So why is it such a mystery that our wars are invisible!

Welcome to Fascism!

The biggest fiction of all

The biggest fiction of all is the now universal belief that Araabs attacked us. Sure they flew the planes but who else had a) enough hatred toward us and b) a willingness to commit suicide? Then there is the fact that those giant towers were engineered to withstand the impact of such a collision.

But the collective conspiracy gathered all their forces to over- come any doubts. The Emperor in fact did have clothes!

Welcome to Fascism!

"Thee Biggest Fiction of

"Thee Biggest Fiction of All"

I agree with this last poster.. something is wrong with the 9/11 event, I don't think you can be rational and set that aside. I know many on the left especially in the academic community seem to have accepted the official explanation such as it is, because it is so overwhelmingly complex and multilayer.
Also, to make a claim that something is an inside job takes serious corroboration first, and then the public exposure to that irrefutable or at least highly credible source... we've been given neither.
9/11 creates an obvious to some, false reality. You can't go forward with anything in terms of policy from that point without multiplying the damage to our country's psyche.

The Emperors new clothes analogy is spot-on, and the invisible war(s) are merely his armor.

17:30 commentsx2--my

17:30 commentsx2--my question to you is WHY bring up "his ilk" and statements of those kind? What purpose is it meant to serve? What Jon Stewart--or any other comedian did, in a comedy structure--as others have noted---- was not a 100% of what some liked.Fine. Just appreciate what was done. Or are we all so angry about this, we can no longer be reasonable and civil towards each other? Why DO YOU bring up religion?I KNOW it is about corporate money. There are no words to describe the evil we are doing. Period. We have a group here that stands out every Friday at the plaza with "NO WAR" signs--what do you do? What I wish for your children you mentioned, is that they not have to go to this war--enter the VA and cry. That is another institution that SEGREGATES those destroyed by CORPORATED WARS OUT OF PUBLIC VIEW--THIS IS WHY WE NEED 1-PAYER HEALTHCARE, and this may be just another reason why we are not getting it.

I hate to admit this because

I hate to admit this because I was and still would be against the draft, but Bush I made invisible wars possible by ending it.

Anon@22:32 -- Yes, exactly.

Anon@22:32 -- Yes, exactly. We are Oceania. When Follow the Money... explained that "These "wars" are NOT about protecting America,... they ARE about siphoning off taxpayer dollars into huge corporations [who] need for us to actually USE UP all these products so that they can keep making more and charging the tax payers for it", my first thought was of the passage from Goldstein's Theory and Practice of Oligarchic Collectivism about how

"A Floating Fortress, for example, has locked up in it the labour that would build several hundred cargo-ships. Ultimately it is scrapped as obsolete, never having brought any material benefit to anybody, and with further enormous labours another Floating Fortress is built."

Remember, nineteen eighty-four was originally going to be called 1948.

While we are not mentioning

While we are not mentioning things, let's definitely NOT mention the 9/11 incident that gave legs to the war and invasions of sovereign nations. Certainly DO NOT investigate the real facts of the "attacks" and DO NOT bring to justice the real perpetrators of this atrocity. If we did a real investigation and trial of the guilty, the whole warmongering game would fall apart and we can't have that now, can we?

While we lack fingerprints

While we lack fingerprints on 9/11 what followed should clinch the deal. Dick Cheney's Energy conference whose results became a National Secret then the phony Iraq war followed by the full scale war on TERROR!

Finally a war to keep the engine going!

I was in high school during

I was in high school during the last years of the Vietnam War. The images of the war from television news are seared into my memory

Why do we not see the disturbing reality of the wars on TV? It's hard to ignore something so horrific if it's reported regularly.

It appears that our news is censored to keep the wars out of our thoughts.

When regular people of all political persuasions are sickened by constant exposure to this ignored news, I believe the wars will end. Why is it hidden?

Cheryl, Do you happen to

Cheryl,

Do you happen to know ..

Does No Child Left Behind require schools to allow recruiters in the lunch room?

I am aware of the rule in which schools turn in names *Unless* parents opt out.

But can't a principal refuse to allow the military physical entrance into the building for recruiting purposes?

If anyone else knows, please feel free to chime in!

Amy Goodman is the

Amy Goodman is the conscience of the nation now that Bill Moyers has moved on.

I wish that my sign at the rally on the Mall had said "Bring the troops home" rather than something about the rich bearing more of their share of the commons, in paying their fair share of taxes.

You are right that the rally blanked out the wars altogether, yet we had so many other valid grievances! And they needed to be heard.

Look at it this way, there was triage of issues, and even though war should have been number one (because it is the cause of so many of our problems today) there had to be a an expression of other very important issues affecting us all today, here in this country. Jon and Stephen gave us a forum for THOSE, so give them credit for THAT.

The comment by 19:52 Swan is

The comment by 19:52 Swan is absolutely outstanding. Corporations aren't people.

Yes, war is a

Yes, war is a waste!!!!!!!
Corporations love it!!!!!
Get us out of this losing so called war!!!
Invest in the USA.

Drones are killing more

Drones are killing more civilians. It's a nightmare we must end now. I understand people without jobs have a lot to think about other than this, but please realize we are seeding hate that may well come home to us. Non-violent protest is called for. Awareness is very urgent! It's not just that we fill criminal pockets by buying these weapons, (who else but a criminal would desire death to civilians?) We endanger our own peace, people!

WWI, WWII,

WWI, WWII, Korea,Vietnam,Noriega in Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, a border war with Mexico, all have the effect of:
Absorbing the unemployed into factories and into the military, raising the value of commodities, raising prices for services as well, (inflation), creating useless and costly materials that must be constantly replaced,(war materiel), silencing 'unpatriotic' dissent, amassing new raw materials (commodities) without compensation from weaker citizens and weaker countries (theft). Terrific for business, but based on a belief in infinite resources which do not exist! 'Growth' is just an escalated use of irreplaeable natural resources like 'strange earth' in China, oil and gas anywhere it exists, useful water, ores, and, ultimately, human beings themselves...and war will get it for us wholesale...
