Racism, Homophobia Dominates Tea Party Protest Over Health Care Bill

Demonstrators outside the U.S. Capitol, angry over the proposed health care bill, shouted "nigger" Saturday at U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia congressman and civil rights icon who was nearly beaten to death during an Alabama march in the 1960s.

The protesters also shouted obscenities at other members of the Congressional Black Caucus, lawmakers said.

"They were shouting, sort of harassing," Lewis said. "But, it's okay, I've faced this before. It reminded me of the 60s. It was a lot of downright hate and anger and people being downright mean."

Lewis said he was leaving the Cannon office building to walk to the Capitol to vote when protesters shouted "Kill the bill, kill the bill," Lewis said.

"I said 'I'm for the bill, I support the bill, I'm voting for the bill'," Lewis said.

A colleague who was accompanying Lewis said people in the crowd responded by saying "Kill the bill, then the n-word."

"It surprised me that people are so mean and we can't engage in a civil dialogue and debate," Lewis said.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said he was a few yards behind Lewis and distinctly heard "nigger."

"It was a chorus," Cleaver said. "In a way, I feel sorry for those people who are doing this nasty stuff - they're being whipped up. I decided I wouldn't be angry with any of them."

Protestors also used a slur as they confronted Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., an openly gay member of Congress. A writer for Huffington Post said the crowd called Frank a "faggot."

Frank told the Boston Globe that the incident happened as he was walking from the Longworth office building to the Rayburn office building, both a short distance from the Capitol. Frank said the crowd consisted of a couple of hundred of people and that they referred to him as 'homo.'

"I'm disappointed with the unwillingness to be civil," Frank told the Globe. "I was, I guess, surprised by the rancor. What it means is obviously the health care bill is proxy for a lot of other sentiments, some of which are perfectly reasonable, but some of which are not."

"People out there today, on the whole, were really hateful," Frank said. "The leaders of this movement have a responsibility to speak out more."

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Capitol on Saturday as the House Democratic leadership worked to gather enough votes to enact a health care overhaul proposal that has become the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's domestic agenda. Most were affiliated with so-called tea party organizations that originally sprang up during last summer's protests of the health care proposals.

Heated debate has surrounded what role race plays in the motivations of the tea party demonstrators. During protests last summer, demonstrators displayed a poster depicting Obama as an African witch doctor complete with headdress, above the words "OBAMACARE coming to a clinic near you." Former President Jimmy Carter asserted in September that racism was a major factor behind the hostility that Obama's proposals had faced.

The claim brought angry rebuttals from Republicans.

On Saturday, Frank, however, said he was sorry Republican leaders didn't do more to disown the protesters.

Some Republicans "think they are benefiting from this rancor," he said.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., said Saturday's ugliness underscored for him that the health care overhaul isn't the only motivation for many protesters.

"I heard people saying things today I've not heard since March 15th, 1960, when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus," Clyburn said. "This is incredible, shocking to me."

He added, "A lot of us have said for a long time that none of this is about healthcare at all. It's about extending a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."

What do you expect from

What do you expect from racist trash baggers? They are all about greed, lies, and selfishness. They spew venom at people who are less fortunate than they. The trash baggers are an embarrassment to America.

The tone and tenor are

The tone and tenor are distinctly right wing. These are the spawn of political hacks like rove, atwater, beck, hell I could go on for an hour. They have created the stage for the end of this country as we have known it.

Morons. Its not about greed,

Morons. Its not about greed, its about individual liberty anbd rights. Telling someone how to spend their money is FASCISM. Period. Look up the definition. Of course leave it to the left to try and smear 50k people as racists for one person's actions. Road to Serfdom. Read it.

A side-effect of the

A side-effect of the election of a brown skinned man to the white house is that the US is confronting it's shadow; the fear ridden undereducated poor white people who have accepted a mythological "America" as reality, and fear losing what they have never had. These people are middle aged and grew up, as I did, being told stories about "the land of the free and the home of the brave" and "bringing democracy" and other such lofty lies. They do not know, understand, or want to learn about the racism, classism, sexism, genocide, deceits, imperialism, etc. that are the true history of the US. They cling to their myth because they don;t think they have anything else. Of course when we think we have nothing, if we open our eyes we can see that we have so much; the beauty of life on earth, of community, of our ability as humans to grow and learn and evolve.
The true villains in all this are not the duped masses, it is the demagogues and profiteers who are willing to lie and stir up trouble in order to preserve a system that enriches the rich and grinds the poor under the heel of capitalism.
The fact that people are angry at the idea of health care being made available to everyone, is truly insane. Equally insane is the proposed law which will mandate that people buy health insurance (with no guarantee of actual health care) from a profiteering insurance company.

The Tea Baggers are

The Tea Baggers are *protesting*. what is sad is that their are no counterprotests about how much a piece of shit this bill is, a total cave to the insurance companies, Instead, the opportunity for the press and public perception is if you don't want this bill "you're an angry racist bigot".
What a coup this whole health insurance hand out has been, watch the Democrats drown medicare in the bathtub.

I have posted on health care

I have posted on health care reform for some years now. I am not African American, but I have been attacked by tea bag types with racist remarks, once you get into the heat of the debate. Their inner attitudes coming out even moreso, showing that this is what it's about for them. They personally attacked me in all kinds of other ways, previously, also disgusting, but while trying to pretend that they weren't racists. But in the end, it all came out. All these racist stereotypes and disgusting remarks. They have a constellation of views, including their guns, women's rights, their "marxism/socialism" boogeyman, Christianity, birther ideas about Obama. I really believe they would commit grave violence in order to accomplish their confused vision of what America is about. They're really a bunch of slobs, if you talk to them long enough. What is most problematic about them, IMO, is that they become such an obstacle to greater reform done by Democrats because they make so much noise and we have to spend so much time dealing with them and their ignorance and hate.

@14:53 (my post) -- just

@14:53 (my post) -- just adding, that now they're really letting it hang out, which is probably for the better in some ways, so people can see what these folks are all about.

They make it harder for people opposed to the bill for legitimate reasons (single payer, public option, the greater empowerment of the health insurance industry), and more challenging for people on the side of real health care reform to have legitimate discussions for change, because it weakens their side, and allows them to get an even stronger upper hand.

On the bright side, this bill is going to make health care in more ways accessible to millions of Americans. With subsidies for the middle class, the expansion of medicaid, the outlawing of preexisting condition clauses (which will have enormous impact -- a huge kick in the cajones to the companies), the elimination of caps on coverage.

I would much prefer single payer as in Canada or a U.K. type system, nationalizing. We will keep fighting for these things, true equality of health care based on people's fundamental right to excellence, and regardless of income or socioeconomic status.

The public option is not dead, either. As someone else posted to me, it's just not in "this" bill, according to Obama.

So take heart all. Don't give up the fight! Stick together and we will win!

is it me or did the only

is it me or did the only poster so far, that supports the baggers, start his post with an insult to anyone who happens not to hold the same belief about the bill as he does? you decide.

...and there it is. Last

...and there it is. Last year Tea Baggers protested that accusations of racism were absurd when they edged as close as they dared without quite crossing the line. Now in desperation they begin to show their true colors. One can only hope that their days are now numbered.

Did anyone reach out and

Did anyone reach out and want to engage in civil debate? The American people as a whole have been attempting to engage in debate, but they are shunned. Political bosses state "we are doing the will of the people," when that is clearly not the case. Poll after poll proves that Americans don't want this. But of course we the people don't know what the hell we are ever talking about. As more of Washington's garbage gets crammed down our throat and more of our $$$ gets stolen from us in order to do so, the frustration level will continue to rise. There are unreasonable, racist, biggoted people everywhere and that will never change.

15:13 says: "the expansion

15:13 says: "the expansion of medicaid" ?
More like taking funds *from* medicare. But then this article isn't about thoughtfull analysis, it's about "Jerry Springer" style sensationalist voyuerism. This bill is appallingly bad as has been the reporting fromthe 4th estate last year. You tell me what sells ad revenue, keeping people in the dark and focusing on out of control bagger-screamers or talking sensibly about how our health care system is still one of the worst in the world? What is big money dictating? They have dictated all that's happened: Set up town halls, destroy single payer outright, focus on the deficit, and above all don't threaten insurance company / big pharm profits. This administration is a continuation of what came before, totally disgusting and worth ignoring totally. Focus locally and clean house.

15:13 Must be you, I haven't

15:13 Must be you, I haven't read anything pro-bagger. Douglas would have had an opportunity to write about something more important then "news worthy" trolls eh? (darn teabaggers, always getting more press then single payer advocates - on purpose)

15:58, oh those medicaid

15:58, oh those medicaid people. They're always the ones who are the cause of the problem with Medicare.

[end of sarcasm]

Give me a break. This is real in-the-box thinking. Medicaid expansion is one of the positive aspects of this bill.

16:01 - I'm afraid your point eludes me. I didn't say anything about this article being pro-bagger. You sound delusional. What did I really say that bothers you?

We know from Nixon, Pentagon

We know from Nixon, Pentagon Papers, personal testimony & confession re: the FBI & CIA involvement there is a history of planting operatives inside political movements. They agitate to an extreme level while attached to moderate sentiments in the same group. Perhaps the J Edgar Hoover days are over but it is very easy for ANY ONE to stand in a group hold up a professionally printed sign and shout. It is even easier for people paid and planted by insurance company stockmen to buy guerilla ad agents to influence the discussion with outrageous anti-social behaviors. In this era of selling wars and trillion $ subsidies by terrorizing why wouldn't the mega corporations be using ANY MEANS POSSIBLE to influence? If you want to make a difference you are going to have to do the same things with pressure at the right points.

Well I happen to be someone

Well I happen to be someone that was present in DC yesterday. I was all over the place and not one time did I hear one racial slur. I strongly question if this happened and if it did ... was it really anyone affiliated with the Tea Party rally.

Not just was I there yesterday, I have been present at other rallies ... locally, regionally and nationally. I would not be affiliated with any racially motivated group of people. From day one of it's conception others have tried to insinuate this but it is just not true. Before people speak out on this ... they need to attend and see for themselves.

16:01, It's YOU baby.

16:01, It's YOU baby. They're real and still here among us. Like back in 1960. If you haven't encountered tea baggers on the internet, then you don't read or write too much. The evidence is there. You probably are one of these people who only talks about single payer to people who support single payer. Think they like you? Think you can make nice with them? Think they want to overthrow the insurance companies with you. Put your money where your money is. And go talk to people who really disagree with you, for a change. Or stop pretending you're a single payer advocate.

John Lewis has 100%

John Lewis has 100% credibility with me.

Tea baggers (who coined their own name, and have children carrying signs that say, "I'll tea bag you!" - among their other signs), ZERO.

Let's rename the Tea Party

Let's rename the Tea Party what it really is: The Y-T Party(I have yet to see any minorities at their rallies, have you?)....

This is totally

This is totally unacceptable.
But next time the press should make every effort to trace down the racists and see who they are.
Are they genuine yahoos, or are they plants? Maybe the FBI or maybe that fanatic Rehm (sp) Emmanuel (sp) were behind it....
Racists and homophones like this bunch are the best thing to happen to enemies of the Tea Party.
Gotta ask, Who benefits from an episode like this?
...
Meanwhile, I agree with MDavidson: "I would not be affiliated with any racially motivated group of people."
... I live in Mass. and also spend time in a rural farming county (Putnam) south of Toledo, Ohio. And have never encountered any racism in their opposition to Obama or Obamacare, etc.
... Racists belong in the trash bin of history.

The Republicans are the

The Republicans are the ugliest of Americans.

They encourage this kind of racist crap by their use of ad hominem attacks. Most of these so called respected Republican senators are unbelievably ignorant of history. The GOP is closest thing to a NAZI type political party as exemplified by some of the unbelievable remarks often uttered by their leadership.

With so many bigoted Republicans in office and otherwise on the loose - it is extremely difficult to remain a true Conservative in the tradition of Britain's Churchill, President Coolidge and Canada's Premier R.B Bennett.

What we are really hearing,

What we are really hearing, in these disgusting epithets from our fellow Americans, is a small indication of the deep rage, insecurity, powerlessness and frustration of a population that's been terrorized, bamboozled, ignored and exploited by the powerful elites in our society, with whom they are justifiably angry. Nothing whatsoever excuses or rationalizes hurling slurs at Congress members, but let's all take a deep breath and look a little deeper at what this represents. The American people are on the brink of something desperate. The Republicans, whose policies are largely the cause of their despair, have been expert, as always, in exploiting this anger and turning it, irrationally and absurdly, against Obama and the Democrats now in power. I hate to say it, and some won't like to hear this, but Obama & Co. have only themselves to blame. Obama has been far too conciliatory, reasonable, patient, 'bi-partisan' and decent towards people who'd like nothing more than to kill him and everthing he stands for. It's time for Obama and the Democrats to step off the corporate contribution gravy train that has turned them into cowards and wimps, and tell it like it is, address the crimes and abuses of the past committed in the Bush White House and on Wall Street, and act like leaders instead of befuddled simps. Honesty, and the future of this country, demand nothing less.

This provokes strong

This provokes strong memories of the Brown shirts leading up to Kristallnacht almost seventy-five years ago. Those of us who lived through those years in Germany can remember how we thought everyone would realize that those thugs were the clowns they were. They may have been clowns, but became the street level fighting force of Hitler and his Nazi party. I am frightened to see this starting again, especially here in the United States.

Right on 16:30... I am 100%

Right on 16:30... I am 100% certain that tactic is not only still in use, but is also commonly used every day by some media like Faux News. Some of the apparent lunatics that argue extreme positions are actors hire for that purpose, plain and simple! And then you decide!

I totally agree with the

I totally agree with the article..and it is not just health care..the fact is that these "white old boys"have held up just about every appointee...they cannot stand the idea of a black man succeeding, after they have failed so miserably during the past 8 years.. The tactics they are resorting to are despicable and, in a sense, pitiful because they show that these people are unable to grow, or think. Sad..and frightening.

I am appalled that so many

I am appalled that so many are whipped into a frenzy against health care for all Americans. More and more people fall off the health insurance rolls as they lose their jobs, no longer able to afford to exorbitant premiums. Their options for health care in the world's super power is going to the emergency room when they're really sick and hoping to get some attention. Does that seem right?
If Bush had not squandered our surplus and gotten this country into two endless wars, there would be plenty of money to provide health care for it's citizens.
In the face of adversity, the Democrats are poised to take the first step towards doing the right thing. They were elected, as were all the senators and congress people, to do things for the greater good of the country.
The posturing for position and willingness to throw the American people under the bus is not attractive.

Phil @ 15:13, you are

Phil @ 15:13, you are correct, the pro bagger comment began as most of their statements begin, by calling us "moron". Then he assures us that the definition of fascism is "telling someone how to spend their money", and demands "look it up". So I looked it up at Miriam-Webster, and I see that the anonymous bagger maybe forgot to look it up. The Tea Party is a mob of ignorant, misinformed, de-educated hooligans and so naturally there is a large racist and homophobic element.

But remember when your parents told you how to spend you allowance on "something good". What fascists!

Teabaggers=Republicans=Racist

Teabaggers=Republicans=Racists.
All one in the same, only Republicans use the N word behind closed doors out of earshot of the public; their willing pawns, the teabaggers, have nothing (like their office) to lose.

Interesting how this just

Interesting how this just seems to happen a day after Obama conjures up civil rights imagery with his "hundred year struggle" comment and Grayson comes out with his "fiscal slaver's whip" nugget. That being said, if your drug of choice is screaming "racism" at every turn, don't be surprised if some less than “modern” whites take you up on your offer.

Who really cares what the

Who really cares what the Baggers are? Why discuss them? - It's all a distraction. The insurance companies, the mix of money and politics and the herding of the masses by the press. Some of the baggers are being paid directly for their time and effort in DC, who else is being paid for their time and effort? The single payer crowd? Some of the comments are ridiculous, the same type of venom was hurled at anyone who doubted Bush's successor before he was elected. (Continuing wars, escalating wars, doing little if anything for employment problems, foreclosure fallout, runaway defense spending, financial reform, and continuing to allow thieves to control our healthcare. )
Obama rode in with the most funding from big Defense, Big Finance and an entrenched core of leaders who work to protect the status quo.
He should be impeached, reform politics now.

Why must America constantly

Why must America constantly be haunted by it's past.
Look at what this is causing, the rising up again and again of one faction against another – the right against the left, Democrats against Republicans. Grow up children! Stop your school yard squabbling. Do you still not know who you really are?

We are one family, in this whole wide world.
We have one life together in this whole wide world.
We have one Lord who guides in this whole wide world.
We have One Father of One Family,
everyone united and destined to be free.
One here in this world and in eternity.

That is who you are, that is your birthright. And now this new inclusive Health Bill will bring that same equality to every person in these United States. Please, for your sake, for the sake of your children, for the sake of every member of the American Family, embrace that reality. Unite as the one great voice that we all are. Forgive and forget the past. It was an ugly history that pitted people against each other. Such attitudes have no place in a just society that is founded on Love and inclusion of all. Live in the now and the beautiful future that awaits us all.

God's blessings on us all, God Bless the United States
of America.

Isn't this protected speech

Isn't this protected speech under the constitution?
"Nothing whatsoever excuses or rationalizes hurling slurs at Congress members, but let's all take a deep breath and look a little deeper at what this represents."

When congress obediently tosses Billions and Billions at illegal wars when regular 'Muricans are being driven into the ground isn't it time to start yelling at the bought and sold apparatus?
Some of the HuffPo crowd are just as vacuous as the Baggers, only now they seem to be saying "let's be reasonable, we can't get anything better at this point". Wow!

Nothing suprises me anymore.

Nothing suprises me anymore. After the US invaded Iraq & France refused to go, I was exposed to rage , anger, judgement ... I am Franco - American & really feel for blacks in America.
I still think that the health care bill still protects medical corporations, profits are still there for the super rich...

17:24 (Gene) you are right

17:24 (Gene) you are right on target. Damn Obama and his stupid 'bipartisan' tactics which gave everything to the Republicans for no votes. As for 18:28, yes, the speech is protected under the Constitution. Did the person get arrested? No. Then what's the problem? And certainly there are good reasons to be against Obama. But if you are mad about the war, call him a war-monger. Calling him 'Nigger" shows that what you are mad about is that he is Black(and in a position of power).

How can any tea-bagger be

How can any tea-bagger be distressed that they are being caricatured as angry racist bigots when the voice of the crowd demonstrates as clearly as it's possible to demonstrate that they are angry racist bigots. I naively thought that some battles had been fought and that peace had been declared. John Lewis tells us he hasn't heard this kind of language since 1960. How can we loudly and publicly express our outrage that this vile filth has returned to our vocabulary? Can I hope that this is the last swing of the dying dragon's tail? If only!

Just affirms my conviction

Just affirms my conviction that the Republican Party is the party of ignorance, lies, fear and hate. In a perfect world, the bill will pass, the world will not end, and people will comprehend the Repubs are the losers.

No surprises here. This is

No surprises here. This is not a tea party, it is a hate party. We've seen its likes every time positive change arose: social security, civil rights, even women's voting rights. The fact that they now frame their anger in racism and homophobic terms makes perfect sense. The history of hate movements and propaganda is replete with such targeting--read about the rise of the Nazi movement. It also reflects the underlayment of fear and hatred by the insecure here. On the day the Soviet Union fell and ended the Cold War I told friends the new danger would come from those Americans who could not live without hatred, as their hatred would soon be redirected toward other Americans. Now we see its fury. This viciousness is both learned and passed on from generation to generation. I shall never forget the day the PA in our school announced that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. While most of my classmates sat there in shocked disbelief and sadness, several other classmates immediately cheered. That's how deeply this viciousness runs and how early it infects the soul.

So what else is new?

So what else is new?

Millions of Americans will

Millions of Americans will get better health care because of this legislation. Let's get together and make it even better. If we get a public option through, that would make a lot of people on different sides of the reform argument more hopeful. As for these tea party protesters, they are opposed to health care reform. They do not represent the 65% of Americans who want single payer or the 75% and counting who want a public option. They are a minority made loud and noisy by corporate dollars.

I lived in the central

I lived in the central Sierra. I had an Obama sticker on my car. I was confronted on a windy dark road on my way home. I have a CCW, a Glock, and was combat trained lo those many years ago.

I confronted the three young men who ran me off the road. We talked. Or, rather, I talked, they listened while I waited for the Sheriff responding to my call.

The Deputy listened to the story, smiled, and arrested the fellows. Took their rifle too. Apparently several folks had been targets that evening. This in enlightened Kaliforneeya.

What is WRONG with people today? These kids were probably 19 or 18 and had no sense of consequence, just an entitled attitude towards an ideology.

No question about it; the

No question about it; the 'protests' against the healthcare legislation are really orchestrated attempts by the right-wing ideologues to undermine the administration. The most shameful tactics of racism and homophobia are encouraged by Armey and his cohorts because they know that their only response to the administration's good efforts is to fan the flames of hatred among their lemming-like sycophants.

Most of the health care

Most of the health care debate IMO is just a distraction funded by the ones who are trying to hold off the debate and reform of the financial industry. The longer they keep us derailed on this issue the more they can work behind the scenes to shore up their defenses and walk away from any repercussions. They've had a whole year to do their damage!

It is amazing that so many people actually are protesting against their own self-interest with their deluded understandings of socialism and fascism.

Where is your proof of this

Where is your proof of this rumor? Still not one bit of proof to substantiate this charge!

But here is a video that totally DEBUNKS it.

http://www.nhteapartycoalition.org/tea/2010/03/21/democrat-deceptions-and-the-coup/

SHAME on this website for promoting a LIE.

Where is your proof? A video, audio, anything?

YOU HAVE NONE.

The Tea Party is the worst

The Tea Party is the worst "social movement" I've ever seen in my life. It's a shame that it gets so much publicity when there are so many other better movements happening than it. Transition town should get more publicity, hell even the 9/11 truth movement should get more publicity than the Tea Partiers, but they don't. I'm part of a movement that is working hard to inspire real change, worldwide change. It's called the Evolver Social Movement. You can check it out and even be part of it just go to www.evolver.net. It's a hell of a lot more understanding and loving that the tea party.

Pity the ignorant who fear

Pity the ignorant who fear change and the need to adapt; fear those who would exploit ignorance.

Ignorance exist in every

Ignorance exist in every state of this union. It's the biggest problem we have in this country. It will bring us down. Or I should say, we are currently on our way down.

No one should be surprised

No one should be surprised that some of these teabaggers are dyed-in-the-wool racists. Not all, but extremist organizations like the John Birchers, militias, traditional racist groups (KKK, militia, etc.) that hope to lead this 'movement are racists.

And as we learned during the election, it doesn't take much to get the disgruntled poorer rural & right-wing christian' working class base worked-up.

Bad times are here and Obama's fiddling while unemployment and despair rise feeds the fire of this right-wing anger. How many Timothy McVeighs are out there?

Perhaps we ought to drop the

Perhaps we ought to drop the "Tea" and pick up "Carpet" and take a lesson from history about negatively motivated people like the carpet-baggers who ravaged the colonies way back when. Hate and greed were THEIR motivators, too!

anon@18:28 So you defend

anon@18:28 So you defend this disgusting behavior behind "free speech". Wow, so if I say that you mother is a stinking whore, (which she is), its o.k. with you?
Thanks for the free ticket.

What's worse, a crazy,

What's worse, a crazy, racist Teabagger or a deluded left-wing radical that is pissed off that all he wanted in the bill wasn't there?

I suggest people join me and

I suggest people join me and get involved in the Coffee Party movement. It emphasizes diversity of opinion and decency and fair play in politics:

http://coffeepartyusa.com/

A crazier post from someone

A crazier post from someone who thinks that "radical" is the pc description of those who cherish human rights?

What's worse is thinking

What's worse is thinking that we have to choose between only two visions of the right path. But of course, the racist is by far worse; he wants an exclusionary political and social country and the left-wing radical wants us to work together as a community and take care of each other. What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

I'm at this minute watching

I'm at this minute watching Nancy Pelosi giving her speech at 10:18 Washington time for the passage of health care reform. I'm nervous and hopeful that the cretins against this bill, especially those disrespecting some of our most sincere and worthy representatives and Mr. Lewis and Mr. Frank, will walk away with their tails between their legs in shame and repentance. The exchange that happened to the two distinguishes reps will go down in history as just the epicenter of what the right wing is all about, hate and slime.

After losing my job in the

After losing my job in the insurance industry last July, I went to what was meant to be a Q & A meeting over proposed health-care legislation. Instead, it got turned distinctly scary by proto-tea-baggers, clearly out to provoke. My Congressman bravely tried to keep a civil discourse going and to keep the event on track---which he managed to do despite catcalls, 'bullet-points' which presumed to be spontaneous (doubtful in most of the cases I heard), and a general tenor of orchestrated manipulation by the Right. And THESE people claim outrage at criticism over their political theatrics?

America has become a mental

America has become a mental hospital. When I came back from Vietnam, I finally realized that I was the enemy in Vietnam. The American Empire is coming unraveled. People all over the world are dying because the American people are so narcissistic. The only true path to understanding for any empire is great suffering. Most empires never reach that level of awareness, because they self-destruct. I'm freer today than I have ever been in my life, because I'm no longer a slave to
obedience.

The Tea Party "party" is

The Tea Party "party" is demonstrating who they are as a group, not to be trusted. They're white racists. Unfortunately for them, that's not the group it once was.

gov't cant run anything

gov't cant run anything right why do people keep falling for the corporate takeover by-lines that gov't is working for the people. isn't it obvious that they don't give a crap about the will of the people??????????????

I'm 57, and this is the same

I'm 57, and this is the same old story: "If Black people have the same education/housing/job opportunities/health care that I do, how can I be special? Being White is all I've got going for me."

I'd like to see more discussion of how our health care system is stifling American business. People who should be starting their own innovative businesses are staying in corporate jobs just so they'll have health care. Same goes for young people with bold ideas who have to pay off college loans instead of getting health insurance. What do you think happens to a small business when an uninsured worker with an undiagnosed ailment like hypertension suddenly falls ill? All those people at your doctor's office who do nothing except handle insurance claims should be helping our economy by producing real goods and services.

The Tea Party is the radical

The Tea Party is the radical military wing of the GOP, much like Somali tribes shooting it out for their beloved drug lord

It makes me feel nice to

It makes me feel nice to finally see a lot of people condemn these jerks. Lets hope the rest of the country wakes up and realizes their hatred.

I was reading my Bible today, and there I came across stuff about the Pharisees and how you need to be careful of what comes out of your mouth cause it comes from the heart.

Its sad these people call themselves Christian. They are the reason people are becoming less Christian and why people like myself have been teetering between Christian and Agnosticism.

What a wonderful lie! Too

What a wonderful lie!
Too bad for you folks it never happened.
This "story" was spamed all over the internet and in local newspapers on Sunday.
There are several youtube videos. The only "N" word that was used was the word NO.
A word very upsetting to most Democrats.
I only see hate and lies coming from your so called independent journalism and your comment section.

This article kind of

This article kind of demonstrates the one major positive Obama and the Democrats have gotten out of this latest development: a chance to retake the narrative. There is no better example than how for the last several months the Tea Party movement has gotten a huge deal of mainstream press coverage, not all of it positive, but nonetheless providing invaluable exposure for them to put forth their ideas and beliefs. And because of all that coverage, it seemed inevitable that their protests were going to shift the political landscape and defeat the healthcare push. Now, the momentum has shifted a bit, and now people are talking about how "Crazy" and "racist/bigoted" the Tea Partiers are. The ball is back in Obama's court in this reflect, at least for the moment.

Special thanks to the

Special thanks to the Republicans for lying and stirring up fear in the minds of the poor, ignorant racists who are among the many people that will benefit from this health care plan. The Republicans are upset because their insurance buddies and ALL of their monies couldn't prevent this bill from passing. Republicans who have health care for life at the taxpayers' expense have the audacity to gripe so that the poor and children can have health coverage. They have the audacity to gripe about health care when folks are losing their "American Dream" by filing bankruptcy and having their homes taken away! Also, what is wrong with the secret service, fbi and military that they aren't providing better protection to our President and congressional leaders? How is it that they allowed these protesters to get close enough to our political leaders to spit on them as well as spew racial slurs?! Were any of the spitters arrested? NOTHING better happen to our Commander-in-Chief or his family because folks in Washington don't have a clue as to drama that city will face! This is 2010 not 1810 or 1910 and NONE of the racial drama in the past will prevail in the present without a fight.

First off I want to say I do

First off I want to say I do NOT support anyone who is a racist or is homophobic, but as a Libertarian I do support the Tea Party movement.

People who support Democrats and Republicans are clueless as these party leaders are using you against each other so they can keep their power and continue looting the middle class.

Bush and Obama are BOTH supporters of Fascism or as Mussolini correctly called it Corporatism.

The people praising the health care reform bill really ought to read the bill as its a give away of taxpayer money to the insurance and pharmaceutical companies, i.e. corporatism.

Again, I do not condone any of the racist comments or deplorable actions that the extreme minority of the Tea Party's supporters have done. Though I do believe the MSM is blowing this out of proportion to discredit the Tea Party as both the Dems and Reps (Who by the way are trying to hijack the Tea Party for their own agenda) are fearful of what a viable 3rd party would do to their power.

And a viable 3rd party is exactly what this country needs to stop the looting of the middle class that has been perpetrated by BOTH the Democrats and Republicans!

The supporters of the

The supporters of the Democrats and Republicans just do not get it.

There is no real difference between these 2 parties. Democracy means choice. In America, today, there is no real choice. The financial and corporate elites are funding both sides equally, and so they always come out ahead, no matter who is in charge. Otherwise, how is it that former Goldman Sachs Co-Chairman Robert Rubin was Clinton’s Treasury Secretary, and then former Goldman Sachs Chairman Henry Paulson was Bush’s Treasury Secretary?

The people of this country need to wake and get behind a third party now!

How do we know what was

How do we know what was said? I have watched many videos and in not one is there the word or curing said, no spitting seen. ITS B_S from the honorable Mr Lewis

According to SPLC, hate

According to SPLC, hate groups in the US grew by 80 percent adding some 136 new groups during 2009.
In Iowa, the count went from 4 in 2000 to 17 in 2009,
The majority are KKK with some neo-Nazi and a white supremist group thrown into the mix.

I photographed the 3/20/10

I photographed the 3/20/10 DC Tea Party as a freelance photographer and can say that racism did not characterize that rally, the people, or the day's entire events -- and certainly does not characterize the movement.

I posted three blog posts, including photos and an audio slideshow, regarding the 3/20/10 DC Tea Party at http:912Photos.com addressing the Tea Party people, the health-care reform bill and the charges of racism. My latest blog post is titled: "Are Tea Party Conservatives Racists?" and can be found at:

A full photo gallery of the 3/20/10 DC Tea Party is coming up in the next post. The photos will reveal spirited citizen dissent, not racism, amongst Tea Partiers.
