New Year's Prediction (I): The Tea Party Conservative Strategy for 2011

Next week starts the new Congress, and with it the Tea Party conservatives. What's their strategy? What will they rally around?

They'll grouse endlessly about government spending but I don't think they'll use any particular spending bill to mobilize and energize their grass roots. The big bucks are in Social Security, Medicare, and defense, which are too popular. And their support for a permanent extension of the Bush tax cuts will make a mockery of any argument about taming the deficit.

Nor will they focus on the debt ceiling. Their opposition to raising it will generate a one-day story but won't rally the troops or register with the public. Most Americans aren't particularly interested in the debt ceiling, don't know what it means, and don't feel affected by it.

Instead, I expect their rallying cry will be about the mandatory purchase of health care built into the new healthcare law. The mandate is the least popular, and least understood, aspect of that law. Yet it's the lynchpin. Without it, much of the rest of the law falls apart: It's impossible to cover all high-risk Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions, unless those at far lower risk are required to buy insurance.

Knowing they don't stand a chance of getting a direct repeal of the mandate (even if they could get a majority in the House for it, they won't summon 60 votes in the Senate, and have no possibility of overriding a presidential veto), they'll try to strip the federal budget appropriation of money needed to put the mandate into effect. This could lead to a standoff with the White House over government funding in general, and a possible government shutdown.

My betting is Tea Party conservatives wouldn't mind a government shutdown over the healthcare mandate. Unlike Bill Clinton's showdown with Newt Gingrich, which hurt the conservative cause, Tea Partiers believe this one could be helpful. In their view, it would enable them to stand on principle, dramatize their argument that the Obama administration overstepped with healthcare, and generate a particular event around which they can summon the energy and enthusiasm of their ground troops — all with an eye on mobilizing for the 2012 general election.

Advice to Obama White House: Get ready.

We ALL need to get ready...

We ALL need to get ready... not just the WH. OK, so what's OUR strategy?

@Jeff redman -- Actually,

@Jeff redman -- Actually, the demonization of liberalism started in earnest with the Birchers in the 50's. The fundamental Bircher conviction was that liberals were attempting to turn the U.S. into a "collectivist" state. In their eyes this was diametrically opposed to their juvenile Ayn Rand "individualism," which is now colloquially known as "libertarianism."

I call it Bircher-Baggerism.

Propose to eliminate the

Propose to eliminate the fine, and replaced it by enrolling violators automatically into a government run health care program. If that does not fly automatically enroll them into a private program. In both cases take the money automatically from pay checks.

"Advice to Obama White

"Advice to Obama White House: Get ready."

Get ready for what exactly? The bush tax cuts have been, by far, one of the most hated by the general public since the mainstream media let slip their actual effects and proportions.

He's already given away the store, he's talking about free trade agreements for god sake, this is something which polls 98% negative across the spectrum from apocryphal communist left to wingnut tea-bagging right.

He has sold the US out, and I say good riddance. The only way we come back to sanity now is by bouncing off the ground once we reach the bottom of the deep, dark hole the corporatists and a complacent public have dug for us.

Tea gaggers just don't get

Tea gaggers just don't get it: for instance, if Medicare was available for anyone who wanted to buy into it below the age of 65 by having monthly payments, deducted from one's paycheck, for as little as $150/month or lower for those making under a certain amount. If one didn't want to buy that plan, then the obvious: pay Blue Cross or Blue Shield for whatever it is they offer, which in my case is coverage (Blue Cross/Anthem) when something goes wrong, not for preventive care of any kind. And of course they are charging my employer up the kazoo for this shitty coverage.
I'd like to see Dems in Congress force every Tea Bagger rep to read the Preamble to the Constitution, especially that bit about the General Welfare of the People!

In preparation for the shut

In preparation for the shut down of the government, Obama should announce that he will have to close up to 50 bases abroad and the shrink of the military by 25%, with upper ranks getting no paychecks. Plus withdrawal from Afghanistan. Position this action as due to the irresponsibility and childish stunts of the Republicans.
