The Downhill Run

The 2010 midterm elections go down on Tuesday, for good or ill. The pollsters, news people and bloggers have been going full bore for months covering the thing. Even the weather people have gotten into the act; word has it most of the country is going to get rained on come election day. Except for get-out-the-vote efforts, a final blizzard of campaign ads and perhaps one last scandal before the polls open, we are into the downhill run of this thing, and all that's left is the voting and the counting.

And the beatings, of course. Par for the course these days. It's hard to know what's more disturbing: the fact that Tea Party activists are beating up women in public, or the fact that acts like this are not terribly surprising anymore.

Snapshot of the pivotal races in the Senate field with days to go: Republican Sharron Angle leads Democrat Harry Reid 49.3% to 46.9% in Nevada. In Pennsylvania, Republican Pat Toomey leads Democrat Joe Sestak 45.9% to 43.4%. In Kentucky, Republican Rand Paul leads Democrat Jack Conway 48.9% to 42.7%. In West Virginia, Democrat Joe Manchin leads Republican John Raese 47.3% to 46.4%. In Washington, Democrat Patty Murray leads Republican Dino Rossi 49.3% to 45.8%. In Colorado, Republican Ken Buck leads Democrat Michael Bennet 47.9% to 45.4%. In California, Democrat Barbara Boxer leads Republican Carly Fiorina 47.4% to 43.4%. In Wisconsin, Republican Ron Johnson leads Democrat Russ Feingold by a commanding margin of 52.3% to 44.9%.

As it stands, there are 57 Democrats, 41 Republicans and two Independents in the Senate. The GOP will have to run the table on Tuesday in order to take back majority control, and with farcical candidates like Delaware's Christine O'Donnell in the mix, this outcome appears to be highly unlikely. A number of prominent pollsters, however, see the possibility of a 50-50 split in the Senate after Tuesday; some have put the odds of such an outcome at one in three.

The House races are a much different matter. All 435 House members are running, and by all available reports, Tuesday looks to be a bad day for the Democratic majority. RealClearPolitics has predicted the GOP will take 222 seats, the Democrats will take 180, leaving 33 as toss-ups. Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight predicts the GOP will take 226 seats, the Democrats will win 208, and the odds of the GOP taking majority control stands at 72%. The Cook Political report predicts the Democrats could lose up to 60 seats, and Charlie Cook told the National Journal that, "It's very hard to come up with a scenario where Democrats don't lose the House."

Leave your shock at the door should Congress flip to the GOP after Tuesday. We've seen far too many deranged elections and demented voter intentions over the last ten years. Tuesday will be the sixth one, in fact. The 2000 presidential election stabbed the nation under the fifth rib and ushered in the beginning of the hell we have since endured. The 2002 midterms cemented the Bushian GOP's stranglehold on power, and was exemplified by the defeat of war hero Max Cleland in Georgia, who was compared to Osama bin Laden by his victorious opponent, Saxby Chambliss.

2004 saw the incomprehensible re-election of George W. Bush, with a little help from some highly dubious results in Ohio and New Mexico. The wave started to break in time for the 2006 midterms - after a massive and preventable terrorist attack, the virtual annihilation of a major American city, two failed wars and the beginnings of what became our current economic calamity - and by 2008, the tables had been turned. The GOP was out of power in Congress and defeated in the presidential election.

That was then, and yeah, this is now.

It is impossible to quantify how ludicrous the run-up to these midterm elections has been. We've had a witchcraft denial, condemnation of masturbation, dismissal of the most basic tenets of the Constitution, beatings, and of course, the elevation of a Tea Party "movement" that was nothing less than the "mainstream" media slapping a layer of new paint on the same old right-wing, racist, reactionary GOP base. We've seen the Citizens United decision create an explosion of corporate spending designed to swing these elections, and that money has worked wonders. The story of this election cycle has been a cartoon drawn by demented children, colored in by economic crisis and bordered by any number of glaring Democratic Party failures and shortcomings.

We will know the truth of it on Wednesday. It is entirely possible the Democrats will retain control of Congress - the GOP has enjoyed a lead for weeks now in the so-called generic ballot, but many of the specific races are much tighter than those numbers would suggest - and there are a number of Governor's races that are also anyone's guess. Turnout will be key, the weather will be a factor, and don't be surprised if the "Tea Party" sends thugs into minority districts to intimidate voters...right before turning around and accusing Democrats of voter fraud.

It's been that kind of election season. Don't forget to vote.

"We've seen far too many

"We've seen far too many deranged elections and demented voter intentions over the last ten years."

Does the year 2008 spring to mind for ya?

You voted for Obama to prove you aren't a racist,

Who will you vote for next time to prove you're not a MORON?

Hey, you spelled "moron"

Hey, you spelled "moron" correctly! Good for you!

Beefeater, a vote for Obama

Beefeater, a vote for Obama in 2008 was not about race. It was about doing what was right for our country. We didn't get what we voted for in part because Obama tried to reason and compromise. Republicans don't reason (witness the Tea Party), and they don't compromise. Stop bringing race into the mix. The only people concerned about race in this election are those who fear any color but white. And the only morons will be the ones who vote against their own economic interests by voting Republican.

Kesha Rogers Congressional

Kesha Rogers Congressional race is pretty darned interesting - she is calling for the immediate impeachment of O - and she's a Democrat - and an African American Woman. What do you call Kesha, Pitt - a 'racist, reactionary right winger'? I've met this exceptionally bright, high integrity candidate and she is part of the 'tip of the needle' - the small group of high integrity candidates who are beating the odds and will pop the bubble of corruption that our two party system manifests.

The Democratic Machine Has

The Democratic Machine Has engaged in some very suspicious activity in Kentucky to try to crush the Rand Paul revolution - look for voting irregularities and very questionable conflicts of interest regarding that election - they will not go away... just do a search for Grayson Paul vote fraud. If Paul loses this election, expect Pitt to chalk it up to 'a progressive victory' rather than looking deeper into the e-voting fraud that is all over the country. Dump the Left/Right paradigm - it is a fool's debate.

The fact we have people like

The fact we have people like beefeater above, the probable reinstating of the criminals who got us into this mess back in the drivers seat, and racist violence on the rise simply proves that fact half of the voters are idiots and morons.

It proves that corporate media is more powerful than critical thinking.

It proves wealth alone determines who goes into office.

It proves democracy can not result in anything but the lowest common denominator, and is no match greed.

Our democratic republic has failed and we are screwed.

The 'Rally To Restore

The 'Rally To Restore Sanity' and the 'March To Keep Fear Alive' will no doubt deliver more integrity and truth, wrapped in humor, than this country has seen all this election season. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, how the main stream media will try to smother it and ignore it, but it will be a significant political event just the same.

Beefeater, that may well be

Beefeater, that may well be the stupidest comment of the year to date. And let me draw the logical inference from what you've written: you did NOT vote for Obama because you ARE a racist. Right?

Thought so.

Mr. Bill O'Rights does not

Mr. Bill O'Rights does not tell readers that the so-called bright, intelligent African-American candidate, Rogers, is also a nut-ball follower of a criminally convicted whack-job, Lyndon LaRouche!

That is why this website is called "Truth Out"!

So much money, so little

So much money, so little time. In four days the US will be deadlocked.
Tea Party, listen up. You are fighting against wealth creation and middle America. You want to abolish Social Security, Medicare (many of you are on both), and rid us of public education. Some how that will solve our debt problems. You are very misguided. Most people spend their Social Security and put money back into the economy. People on Medicare have little resources to pay for burgeoning health care costs and would be bankrupt, depriving society of the recipient's health and wealth. As for our need of education, here's the no-brainer: public investment in education = innovation = new industry = jobs = wealth creation.

If you really want to get your panties in a wad over something, go after the bloated, wasteful Pentagon.
There's some serious waste going on over there! Oh, and brush up on your spelling and actually read the constitution.

I'm just praying the

I'm just praying the American people are not going to be so stupid when they vote! And I'm not even religious!

Dear Beefeater-the teabag

Dear Beefeater-the teabag cohort is being supported by the billionaire brothers Koch. Do you imagine that they are 'Christian',or spending their political contributions
(tax-deductible?) for the better good of YOU and YOURS, or the citizens of this country?
Jesus, in a towering fury, took a whip to the money-changers in the temple! He was executed for that action! in the political reality of that time, Judas had NOTHING to do with it. do you think the Romans or the Pharisees would have compromised with him(Jesus) about it?slapped his hands, or just give him a warning(well, since it was your first offense....)?
do you imagine that He was naiive enough to hope or believe that the powers-that-be would forget about him? NO!! He knew EXACTLY what the consequences would be!
If YOU think that the Koch brothers, and all the various others of their ilk, care about you and yours, or anyone else in this country, or the world, for that matter, beyond their business bottom line, then you ARE a moron, maybe even a cretin. It might be a toss-up.
The very essence of Christianity, as a life practice, is summarized in the two Great Commandments that he gave to his disciples, and therefore, to all apparent human beings. Your 'neighbor' is EVERY OTHER APPARENT HUMAN BEING ON THE PLANET-to say nothing about loving relationship to all the non-humans. If you are not becoming incandescent in the necessarily moment-to-moment practice of those gifts of Reality Wisdom that Jesus gave you, then YOU ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN. You are not even prechristian. You are not even fully human yet. Subhuman, with a lot more growing to do.
Jesus also said something to the effect that whatever you do to the least of these, my brethren(ALL apparent human beings), you do it to Me.in light of that statement, explain to yourself what could possibly be christian in what the brothers koch, et al are doing. i assert to you that Jesus would bring the whip.
So, what is your practice, whoever you are, or presume to be?

This entire mid-term

This entire mid-term election circus reminds me of the famous quote of the master of such venues: "There's a sucker born every minute." Thank you P.T. Barnum, you had vast vision of our political future.

The striking difference

The striking difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals believe, if change is inevitable, it can and should be managed. Conservatives try to deny change as long as possible, and generally stay rooted to the spot like an intellectual anchor until the storm sweeps in to drown everyone even remotely connected to them.

It's amusing they're using the "change" mantra too, since most of their ideas are more along the lines of building a bridge to the 19th century and calling regression "change."

To vote or not to

To vote or not to vote...that is the question.
Can you really feel confident in any of these wind bags who are running on either side of the isle? I haven't felt confident in years!
American democracy is dead.
It's the laughing stock of the world. Dems and pubs
don't work together for the common good.
And the corporations to whom they worship, could care less about us or the planet. And just think of what the winners get control of: the most deadly military complex ever produced in world history.
For me the only way to stay sane is to go local and small and do work that I can see actual results. Buy local, grow local, devote time locally to people who need help: at soup kitchens, fire departments, rescue squads, etc.
It feels good to make a difference in your own communities. Through my yoga practice I am learning about the connection between acts of service and the difference it can make.
It sounds strange to think we can change the world that way but it depends on which "world" you're talking about.
I'm through with media hyped sound bites of vitriol spewed from takling heads. The hate and disrespect for another point of view. You want to change things? Look inside of yourself and then ask yourself if you've even lifted a finger to help any one recently with out asking for payment. It starts small.
Some may choose this candidate or that one and that is fine. But I'm choosing another way because the option of voting doesn't make any difference for me.
I'm choosing to live...live fully.

Very well thought out and

Very well thought out and absolutely true.
Thank you 20:36 'zeus' forehead'

20:15 - re:Kesha Rogers -

20:15 - re:Kesha Rogers - check out her platform rather than making ad hominem attacks - argue the points, mr. 'truth out'. As for Mr. LaRouche, while he is far more of a collectivist (like most 'progressives' on this board) than I am (he thinks very highly of FDR's policies, for instance), he has consistently called out the corporatocracy and banksters since before most people on this board were born. Regarding his history with the law - what do you think happens to people when they go up against the powers that be - how can you be so naive?

You forget to factor in the

You forget to factor in the election fraud that got us Bush 2000 in the first place. There are not really as many crazies as election results would have us believe, but, as we all know, it's not who votes that counts--it's who counts the votes. Who will save us, if not ourselves?

Thank you, S Bernstein. I

Thank you, S Bernstein. I too am disgusted and feel disenfranchised by "my" government representatives because I am not rich in a material sense. I am as rich as any emperor in a non material sense. I have adopted a homeless person and it has been the best decision I have made in years. I do not donate to national charities but I do donate to local charities, soup kitchens and I try when I can afford to put poor people to work at fair pay.
I donate to the food bank and the animal shelter.
I am not retired and I am a nurse by profession.
I am materialistically poor but I am richer than the Kochs who are trying to destroy their own homes. I wonder if this is all based on a rich boys' bet.
I encourage all TO readers to try just one small step and feel rich. Okay and donate to TO once in a while.

I voted already and saved

I voted already and saved myself the suspense and agony of these stupid, expensive campaigns. It doesn't take that long to figure out who's better, where there's no choice except a protest write-in (Republicans or conservative judges running unopposed), or what issue elections (for example - marijuana - though I don't live in California - or money for schools and highways out of candy sale taxes) will make a positive difference if you vote for or against. Some refer to voting "while holding their nose" - I suppose I steeled myself internally while voting this time, just to spare myself the angst. Since so many Democrats are not up to what they should be, but certainly, there are critical enough issues on the platform, and through the opposition, where it will make a difference in the intricacies of my life in any number of years and my offspring. We have three problems: (1) Campaign finance reform which isn't going to happen because it would send the people who pass it out of office; (2) election fraud, especially via electronic voting, and (3) the stupidity and apathy and general sheephood of the American people. Still, I voted. In and of itself, it's a fairly a simple act with logical, mathematical results (if fraud is not happening). The tricky part is not being too attached, and steeling oneself so as not to be driven insane while participating. While the campaign literature pours into my box, I just toss it into the recycling bin, like another credit card offer, while noting who must spending a lot of money from corporations in order to get reeelected (since their election is killing more trees than anyone else's). Minimalism is key.

E-v-e-r-y-1 needs to vote.

E-v-e-r-y-1 needs to vote. Donot make excuse about this or that or some lassitude of sorts. Yes, it may well be choice of lesser evil, but that is a better choice than none. Beproud. Take yor kids or g/kids with you. Remember your people probably died or crossed deserts or oceans for this--do not let them down, but carry on.Who said the fight was over anyhow? Only those who want to defeat you? So they define you. Just go vote.

God! U.S. politics these

God! U.S. politics these days is as mad-dog crazy as any banana republic's. The rhetoric from the Right is unbelievable. But what's really unbelievable is that people like Bill o'Rights and Beefeater actually believe it.
You'll get the government you deserve, America! I hope you'll all be very happy with it. At least, with more loonies in Washington, the speed of your collapse can only escalate, and those of us in the rest of the world will be on the sidelines, cheering the decline and fall of your ludicrous, and fortunately for us all, shortlived, 'Empire'.
Buh-bye, have a nice day, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way down!

Whatever happens on Tuesday,

Whatever happens on Tuesday, it is time for President Obama to stop trying to be reasonable with unreasonable people. It is time to start fighting for the majority of Americans who voted him in to carry out a progressive (we are a community) agenda. Even if he loses every battle.

Paul W - So are you a

Paul W - So are you a defender of O's policies? Tell me anything redeeming about any post appointment he's made - Monsanto people to run the FDA, criminal bankers to run the friggin' economy - Oh YEA - lets elect more like him!!!! I don't believe the 'right' or the 'left' - it is a fantasy distinction, they are mirror images - both are 'eat up' with centralized control and the conviction that local governments can't tax and spend in as focused a way as a massive bureaucracy a thousand miles away, owned by global corporations. It amazes me that you actually believe it... Bush stole the election in 2000 and 2004 (or it was stolen for him) - watch the same forensic group who proved that take apart this election - but for the other side. It was so obvious that Bush's election was rigged - unless you happened to be one of his supporters - I expect the same will be true this time, but it will be Dem's who will be blinded by their egos instead of the 'pubs.

@Paul W - if you're not from

@Paul W - if you're not from the U.S. that's something to celebrate.....for those of us who are U.S. citizens, that is! Your bitterness and your cynicism are not welcome. I'm not blind to the incredible lack of honesty and integrity in our government and how it seems like we're doomed to be immobilized as a country. But don't you cut us out of the equation just yet, because when Americans are faced with the worst, that's when we're at our best. There has been talk about Jesus and the 1st and 2nd commandments but the commandments have not been clarified. #1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind and with all your strength and - #2, love your neighbor as you love yourself. I think if we were all to comply with those beautiful truths, it would be the whole world that would benefit, not just "We the People" and our all too human government. But, you know what? I voted, because it matters!!!
