I wrote this past weekend about the very real danger facing the Republican Party in 2012 thanks to the "Tea Party" uprising within the GOP base. I noted that it was preposterous to be talking about the inside baseball of the '12 election three years out, and it turns out that assessment was exactly correct. The GOP's Tea Party problem is blowing up right now, and threatens to wreak extreme havoc for them not only in the upcoming midterms, but in the next several elections to come.

At least, that's how it's playing on television. The Wednesday afternoon CNN broadcast was a feast for those with a taste for irony. To wit, a couple of talking heads spent a full segment describing how the sudden ascendancy of the Tea Party was largely a product of the saturation coverage they've been getting from the cable news networks. Ergo, the easy assumption they were proffering was that if the Republican Party simply told their members to turn off their televisions, well, the whole Tea Party noise will fizzle out from lack of attention.

I'm not so sure about that. CNN had other numbers that paint a fairly grim picture for the GOP, especially if this insurrection within their base continues to fester and grow. According to CNN, only 44 percent of those who identify with the Tea Party movement identify themselves as Republicans, while 52 percent identify themselves as Independents. Worse, when those questioned were asked whom they would support if a Tea Party candidate entered a primary race against a Republican, half of them would break away from the GOP and vote third party.

Press play to listen to author William Rivers Pitt read his column, "The Revolution Is Being Televised":

These Tea Party people are really starting to get organized; the best evidence of that is the media savvy they've displayed thus far by garnering so much television attention, which has translated into blog and print news coverage. The fact that they've managed to do this by organizing rallies filled with people holding signs that say things like "Keep Your Government Hands Off My Medicare" is more than just grist for the irony mill.

They know that TV news people are happiest when given the chance to broadcast spectacles, and so they gave them one, and got what they came for. Inside the Washington bubble, where television is king, the echo of the Tea Party shouters has begun to ring in a lot of Republican ears, especially those who are vulnerable to a challenge from the right flank in a 2010 primary.

Now that these Tea Party folks have people's attention, they are moving into the next phase of getting organized: preparing a manifesto. According to a recent ABC News report, the process of preparing this document, as well as the final product, will not leave the Republican National Committee suffering from a case of the warm and snugglies:

Republicans on Capitol Hill are developing an election-year alternative to the Obama administration's agenda. But a Tea Party activist in Texas says the politicians in Washington - including the out-of-power Republicans - don't have the "credibility" to offer a contract.

His solution? Use the Internet, develop a "Contract from America," and make the politicians come to him. "You are going to be held accountable by us," said conservative activist Ryan Hecker, offering a preview of what Tea Party activists are going to tell Congressional candidates later this year. "We have a plan - a proactive reform plan - for you to follow and not the other way around."

Technically, Hecker doesn't have a reform plan yet. He does, however, have one in the works. He says he came up with the contract idea shortly after Barack Obama was elected president in November 2008. Hecker, a 29-year old lawyer from Houston, spent the 2008 GOP primaries working as an opposition researcher for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.

To get his idea off the ground, he launched a Web site, "ContractFromAmerica.com," which encourages activists to offer possible planks for the contract. From the original 1,000 ideas that were submitted, Hecker whittled it down to about 50 based on popularity. He is currently narrowing it to 20 ideas. He is being aided in this process by former House Republican Leader Dick Armey, whose conservative group, FreedomWorks, has established close ties with many Tea Party activists around the country.

When the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), convenes later this month in Washington, DC, Hecker says he will launch an online voting phase that will take his document from 20 ideas to the final 10 to 12 most popular. The completed "Contract from America" will then be presented to the public on Tax Day, April 15, 2010. Hecker wants to give all Congressional candidates - Republicans, Democrats and Independents - an opportunity to sign on to his "contract."

Beyond the distinctive hilarity of the title - "Contract from," you say? Doesn't that sound a lot like "Back Away from America" to you? - is the sign-on offer made to candidates. Sign on, you say? Well, as of last week, the top 20 ideas proffered by Tea Party activists on Mr. Hecker's "Contract from America" Web site include:

  • No Lifetime Salary or Benefits for Congress.
  • An Official Language of the United States.
  • Repeal the 16th Amendment.
  • Birth-Right Citizenship.
  • Defund Activist Groups (eg: ACORN).

Never mind the fact that not a whole lot of congressmen are going to sign on to a platform that cuts their pay. The GOP has been actively courting Latino voters for years, so that "Official Language" plank would be a suicide pact for any politician who wants to win an election in the West going forward. The same goes for the "Birth-Right Citizenship" thing, but really, that's just a sop to Tea Partiers who still have Mr. Obama's birth certificate stuck in their teeth. Defund activist groups? All of them, or just the ones they don't like? "Repeal the 16th Amendment" is code for "Abolish the income tax," which is certainly sound fiscal policy in the middle of a crushing recession.

Yeah, there's going to be a stampede of politicians rushing to sign on to this thing. Any second now.

The Republican Party's electoral strategy for more than 15 years now has been to empower and energize their base, get them to turn out for every election en masse, and put divisive vote-splitting "values" issues front and center in the national debate via the media. Get the base fired up about abortion, immigration, taxes and, during the Bush "War on Terra" era, wrap the whole thing in the flag. For a while, it worked for them, but the boomerang they threw into the wind is coming back at them now. Ask any television - they got these Tea Party people going, and now they get to reap the proceeds.

Ah, irony.

This so-called Contract from

This so-called Contract from America sounds an awful lot like what the right-wingers have wanted all along. An official language? Repeal the 16th? Defund activist groups (the democratic ones only, I'm sure) Sounds to me that this is just the same old right-wing crap with the additional pay regulation for politicians.

Why would anyone who wasn't already in the right-wingnut camp want to sign on to this?

If this "tea party" were

If this "tea party" were trying to be sold as a legit third political party option, they would not be courting appearances by Sarah Palin or talking to Michael Steele. They would be courting Jesse Ventura, Ralph Nader, Michael Bloomberg, and even Ross Perot. Those men are the superstars of independent politics, and all three have voiced their belief that the United States needs a viable third party. But the tea party is not a real political movement. Its just angry people who want a sense of strength from numbers.

... sounds more like a

... sounds more like a contract on America .

"They know that TV news

"They know that TV news people are happiest when given the chance to broadcast spectacles, and so they gave them one, and got what they came for." If this is true, why is there such lethargy and downright hostile resistance to a March on Washington from the pro-Health care reform majority? Could someone please explain?

WTF? I went to

WTF? I went to "Contractfromamerica.com" and an "official language" didn't make it to the final survey. I wonder if it was excluded "pragmatically"? Surely it couldn't have fallen so far in the standings in a week to not make the final survey that will be used to write the doc.

Also, what exact changes are they seeking to "birthright citizenship?" Article is thin and doesn't say what specific changes they want, and this also apparently didn't make the final cut, so there isn't an "explainer" paragraph on their web-site.

And don't forget: Money

And don't forget: Money drives the political process. Tea Party adherents will be competing with Dems and Repubs for the big bucks and without those dollars, is likely to be marginalized by advertisements from both sides. A lot of former wing-nut conservatives are going to find out what the left knew a long time ago: winning elections is all about presentation and without the money, you will not be able to get your message out there. Maybe there ultimate defeat will convince them that the main thing wrong with our system is that the people count for nothing.

Last week's Economist calls

Last week's Economist calls the Tea Party Movement the strongest political movement in America today, due to decline in the influence of the two Political Parties, and the rapid falloff in O'Bama's approval ratings.

Pitts is dead on! The

Pitts is dead on! The Republicans sowed the seeds of this movement, and now they will reap the rewards. They've got a good portion of the population convinced that we're sitting ducks for another 9/11 type attack, and that the country, under Obama's administration, is headed for Socialism. But, they want to keep their Medicare and Social Security, etc. They are so fundamentally ill-informed, they are dangerous. And we can thank Bush and Co. for terrifying the wits out of them for all of this.

The Tea Party is the best

The Tea Party is the best expression of a frustrated population with their political, judicial and economic system. Aren’t seventy per cent unhappy? Tea Parties’ concerns are genuine and many people may agree with some of them. “No Lifetime Salary or Benefits for Congress”, is very appealing. But the other points of the “Contract from America” alienate a high number of people who are unsatisfied as well but, who know that America is not all “white”. America is only white in the winter. The Teas’ appeal to the lower emotions of their constituency alienates many people in our diversified social and demographic landscape. It is indeed, a wasted opportunity to make sound changes. Creating the conditions for the emergence of a true people’s party to challenge the two-party supremacy and veiled dictatorship.

Isn't the Tea Party an

Isn't the Tea Party an offshoot of GGOOB (Get Government Off Our Back)? And doesn't the DCI Group, a corporate PR firm, manage GGOOB? I doubt that the Tea Party will have problems raising money (especially given the recent Supreme Court decision).

Why not cover the left? I

Why not cover the left?
I would like to know why the Tea Party crowd gets so much attention when the war protestors, pro health care reform protestors and activists from the Left "never" received any attention and continue to not receive any attention? The Tea Party group was fanned by Fox News with fake photo props to imply that their crowds were larger than they really were.
An upcoming walk on Washington, DC to promote health care reform will occur this week! Will it be televised, or do we only show the crazies who show up railing against governmental policies that they love when they receive them, such as Medicare, highways, clean water, etc. Funny thing is the number of uninsured Tea Party activists who protest access to Health Care. The entire movement including the support for Dick Cheyney who violate the Constitution at every turn demonstrates the greatest Republican Achievement of the last century: An uneducated voting public will support talking points that encourage these voters to vote against their own best interests! The result to the world- America appears unsophisticated and deserving of the failures of our country to succeed when we had the opportunity to continue to lead well into the 21 Century. Instead, we will be managed through mob rule, fear of Vigil Antes and a former middle class forced to suffer. We ultimately will become a country with Gated Communities for the wealthy for survival and we will feed the remaining Americans "cake" AKA snack foods, fats, sugar, etc.

Oh well, so much for the next generation. Aging in an environment like this will be difficult.

I subscribe to this rag,

I subscribe to this rag, just to see what the ignorant/idiots are up to. Look who is running scared. Count your blessings, that the tea party is passive. Knowledge will prevail.

Coffee Confederacy!

Coffee Confederacy! Rejoice! Those T-baggers have outdone themselves with their top ten of "ball-face" rhetoric. My very favorite is Birth-Right Citizenship. Pray tell, how are they going to handle all the children born here to illegal immigrants? And no, it's too soon to go for the repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment - not when you're so busy trying to bury the Sixteenth. Remember baggers, FOCUS - or a phrase that sounds very similar - is what you are trying to do!

All this stems from

All this stems from political illiteracy.

If knowledge prevails, that

If knowledge prevails, that would mean that the teabaggers had nothing to do with it. It's the Know-Nothing Party of the 1840s all over again.

As someone with an actual

As someone with an actual functioning brain I question exactly who the "ignorant/idiots" are.

Certainly this must apply to the contradiction-at-every-turn, sort-of-white-supremicist teabagger clowns who worship Sarah Palin. But I figure from the incoherent trine of that comment that he means Democrats or Obama or "liberals" or some such silliness.

VEry sad, this country is going into the toilet. We need a functioning government, not no government.

The Republicans have always wanted to kill Medicare and kill Social Security. The latter is the most stable thing the govrenment produces, solid for 35 years at least. This is why they always "borrow" from the Social Security funds, because it is self-funding and solvent.

But the media is complacent, the public have no sense of civics anymore, no knowledge of what "body politic" is let alone that it is a necessity not an evil.

Bah. The enemy is you.

The Tea Partiers are

The Tea Partiers are hilarious in their ignorance. They want to end taxation--so what do we give the police, fire, military, the people who pave our highways, and those who administer our Medicare to do their work? Tea bags? Put simply, they hate America, are un-American, and also share attitudes that oppose the teachings of most faiths of goodness, including Christianity. They are thus un-Christian, thus anti-Christian. Maybe they are the collective anti-Christ! What is equally hilarious is Republicans accept, condone, and bow as they obey these nut jobs. Most are bitter, insecure, frightened losers who must have their way or else they pout, scream, and throw tantrums. We've all seen it before--in kindergarten or maybe the first grade. GOPers best soon understand the goal is to serve the nation, not vicious notions. Or be swept aside by the collective good of those who do.

Amerika , WAKE UP ! The

Amerika , WAKE UP !
The U.S.A. has been run by these 2 parties for much too long . We have no real freedom of choice , it is either Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum , take it or leave it . Both parties refuse to allow any outsiders to join the debate , they DO NOT want any competition . When we get disgusted with the Republicans , we throw them out and put the Democrats back into power , hoping for change. After X X years , we get sick of the Democrats , we dump them and put the Republicans back into power, again hoping for change . Do we get change ? Both parties make a lot of promises , it is the same old / same old psycho babel , sounds good , but they rarely follow thru. They are quite happy with the status quo , playing musical chairs and taking turns at power. Bush when he first ran for office said that he " was a compassionate Conservative " What did he do ? He lied and distorted facts in order to try to justify his invasion of Iraq . Thousands of innocent young kids in the U.S. military died in vain and tens of thousands were physically or psychologically destroyed for life . They will NEVER be normal . And that is not counting the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and Afghani's who died or were horribly maimed because of our WEAPONS of MASS DESTRUCTION .[ predator drones , etc. ] Cui-bono ....Who benefits ? The Halliburtans of the world of course [ Cheny's company ] Peace is NOT profitable .
Obama also made many promises and did not follow thru such as bringing our troops home , instead he expanded the war with an additional 30,000 troops . How do you tell when a politician is lying ? When his lips are moving . Before it is too late , we should throw all incumbents out of office , and have at least 3 other political parties running against these two Con Artists . Where are the Patriots in the U.S.A. ? All we have at this point are bought and paid for Who_es . We are protecting Iraq's , Afghanistan's and Pakistan's borders but our own borders are wide open allowing drug dealers , hoodlums , thieves , rapists and violent gang members from south of the border to set up their violent gang [ drug ] territories in the southwest U.S.A. The U.S.A. has changed radically since the mid 1960's , drugs , Wall Street greed and political corruption is now the norm . I am amazed that the compliant lumpen masses just shrug their shoulders , bend over and touch their toes and take it with a smile . A Military Coup d' e'-tat is long overdue , if they had the guts , they would take over and clean house in Washington . Traitors are deeply embedded in the highest positions of power including the Defense Department . They are the true " Power Behind the Throne " Welcome to the New World Order .
What fools ye mortals be !

Do not create a gulf between

Do not create a gulf between Republicans and the Tea Party: they are the same people. They have merely rebranded themselves, realizing the stigma their former banner has come to carry.

No new tricks here. The same behavior is observable everywhere: the amorphous and ill-famed conglomerate Phillip Morris switched over to the (almost eco-friendly sounding) name "Altria"; Evangelical Christians are more apt to identify themselves benignly as "non-denominational"; and racist, semi-literate, cable news-loving Republicans become the romantic sounding "Tea Party".

Now I'm just brainstorming a

Now I'm just brainstorming a possible scenario here... Could this resurgent neoTbag movement, IF it goes all the way and splits the right in two, open the way for the dems to also split in two, (i.e. a slightly left-centrist party and a progressive party) without committing guaranteed electoral suicide? i.e. a four party system, maybe forming two coalitions on occasion? This 'teabag' movement, if it cements itself into national politics, might provide such an opportunity for progressives further down the road. Just a thought.

The Tea Partiers are really

The Tea Partiers are really just selfish camera hoggers, look out for myself types who don't begin to understand those in the US who are suffering in this economy from no jobs, no homes, no health care, etc., etc.. I feel sorry for a group that only pays attention to their own weak ideas that will not begin to heal this country and don't know what compassion for others means. Let's have a real debate in this country about getting it going in the right direction again so that everyone benefits. Sad, sad, sad.

64% of USA’s people favor

64% of USA’s people favor having a third party “that would run candidates for President, Congress and state offices against the Republican and Democratic candidates”. (CNN February Opinion Research Poll). If the election were held today (February 12-15) 78% of both “all respondents” and “registered voters” (interviewed) will vote democratic or republic and only 16% will vote Tea Party. The “Tea Party activists” are made up of 80% whites, 44% college graduated, 91% from suburban-rural, 52% Independents and 44% republicans and 66% earn more than 50,000. Curiously 97% have not given money to the Tea Party, 95% has not attended their meetings and 92% has done nothing to support the Teas. The only possible explanation for this is that many people share the basic concerns of the TP, but do not approve their methods or that their rhetoric alienate some sympathizers. It may also mean that there is ground for a third party if it can capitalize the discontent of the people without going too emotionally radical and overboard. For example, eliminate taxes, it was mentioned above, is totally impossible. Only 4% democrats identify themselves as “Tea Party Activists”. This may be due to the perception that Tea Party and the Republicans are the same. And people may want something different and challenging to the two parties.

the tea beggars are truly a

the tea beggars are truly a mal-informed viscous mob fueled by the "liberal" media which turns out not to be liberal : the definition of liberal is "Open Minded".

To rant "Keep Govenrment hands off my (government funded an goverment operated) Medicare" would be funny if it were not so pathetic.

Repealing the 16th amendment wold be nice, but how about a nice simple flat tax with no exemptions, for both real people (who breath an die) and corporate "persons".

We do need a viable third party. We need a party of the people, by the people and for the people. One that represents our interests, not those of multinational corporations.

I ask the tea baggers to move from nonthinking reptilian brain gut reaction; to critical thought. Educate yourselves, drop the vitriol and join a common cause.

We need to de-fund The other 2 corporate parties.

Brainstorming wrote: "IF it

Brainstorming wrote: "IF it goes all the way and splits the right in two, open the way for the dems to also split in two, (i.e. a slightly left-centrist party and a progressive party).

There ALREADY IS a "progressive" party out there. It's called the Green Party. Check out their "Green Ten Key Values" and see if you agree. The very first one is called, "Grassroots Democracy" and sounds exactly like what the teabaggers want, too. www.greenparty.org

The "Contract from America"

The "Contract from America" is all knee-jerk and panders to the lowest common denominator. With every new move, the tea baggers are proving to be less like a viable political party and more like a bunch of obnoxious, whiny neo-cons who don't like the current president chosen by the majority of voters so they're going to scream and holler to show their displeasure and to slow down the functioning of the federal government. Brilliant. Just like pouting children, they are incapable of rational thinking and discussing the issues like mature adults. Therefore, who's really going to ever take them seriously? The tea baggers really need to grow up. That theory about conservatives having a genetic defect that makes more fearful is starting to make sense. http://scienceblogs.com/gnxp/2008/09/conservatives_have_more_fear.php

If these baggers are the

If these baggers are the equivalent to the 'know nothings' of the 1840s 23:30's thought is very interesting - it may take a few election rounds but a major party realignment does seem in order. Last one of course led to a civil war but you got to take the good with the bad. Glad I'm watching all this from overseas.

H.L. Mencken (not P.T.

H.L. Mencken (not P.T. Barnum) said, "No one in this world, so far as I know...has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people." I'd keep that in mind with respect to the Tea Party, and also not underestimate their potential as a political force. They are the closest thing we have to a Fascist Party.

This Tea Party Movement

This Tea Party Movement sounds more like the simple minded Corporatist, nationalist state 80 years ago that we now know as fascism.

Simplistic, dishonest slogans that appealed to irrational fears and self interest. Want to know who will pay the taxes? It won't be the wealthy or the privileged. The erosion of the middle class building progressive income tax and corporate taxes will accelerate and be replaced with payroll and sales taxes which will not feed the military buildup so you'll become every more burdened by debt - unless fools like China and the oil rich states stop lending the USA government money.
And there will be no limits on corporate donations to political parties and those not supported by the corporatist will suffer even more roadblocks and harassment which is the reason the USA is the only western country without a multi-party system. Soon it will have one one party - just like China and fascist Germany.

Tea Partiers or Sheep led

Tea Partiers or Sheep led with blinders on by Coporatists...?... ' Tea Party' or 'The Intolerant People Party'... Monty Python would have a field day with this crowd... There has to be at least one whole comic season of hysterical stuff here...LOL..!!... I can't wait to see the Uniforms, Corporate-Party Logos and Secret Handshakes and Slogans--- perhaps like, 'Give Me Fox Snooze Or No Newz At All..!'...

Those "tea party" morons are

Those "tea party" morons are just extreme right wing Repbulican voting scum bags!!

STOP GIVING THOSE SHIT HEADS PUBLICITY!!!!

What a dangerous group who

What a dangerous group who would feel so entitled to identify what they call activist groups. Of course, their own groups would get funded. I do not see them as being any less corrupt than the party they came from.

Tea Party? Tempest in a teapot. "A tale full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

My impression of the

My impression of the T-baggers is that they basically son't care about the rest of us as long as they're all right. They seem to be older ( a lot of retirees), well-dressed and well-heeled enough to take time off from work to protest and pay the $5oo fee to go to the convention. They like things just the way they are. Typical Republicans.

A waste of time, effort, and

A waste of time, effort, and money.

Build bridges, we share a

Build bridges, we share a lot of concerns. Thanks for their web address, http://contractfromamerica.com. None of the ideas you criticized have made it in the final selection being offered. Most of what's left sounds good to me, such as:
COMMIT TO REAL GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY,
PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION,
PROTECT INTERNET FREEDOM,
RESTORE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY & CONSTITUTIONALLY LIMITED GOVT:
Create a Blue Ribbon taskforce that engages in a complete audit of federal agencies and programs, assessing their Constitutionality, and identifying duplication, waste, ineffectiveness, and agencies and programs better left for the states.
REJECT CAP & TRADE:
Stop costly new regulations that would increase unemployment, raise consumer prices, and weaken the nation's global competitiveness with virtually no impact on global temperatures.
STOP THE PORK,
AUDIT THE FED,
NO MORE BAILOUTS.
If you like any of these, go to the website and vote for them. We are all Americans. The government has been corrupted, and many Americans want real change. The ploy of playing us against eachother has worked well to keep us from focusing on the real enemy of Democracy: Corruption by corporate money.

right... the "red herring"

right... the "red herring" party...

they're angry... but they know not at what...

so... they wave signs on all the "hot-button" issues... that the plutocracy really could give a crap about...

like the article said... red-herrings to whoop up the masses...

because if the elite ever shared their real agenda... well the only ones who would vote for it.... would... be... well... the elites...

I find it funny, that the

I find it funny, that the items you listed

"Birth-Right Citizenship."

"An Official Language of the United States."

yet you highlight it, and most posters use it as their "slam", on the Tea Party never made it into the next cut. Those were fringe ideas and apparently a large enough percentage of those Tea Partiers, that the writer and a majority of the posters so claim are ignorant, felt the need to exclude them. Imagine that, the Tea Party as a whole is rational...

Every Party has it's fringe elements. The birther movement(started by a staunch Hillary supporter)/911 Truth movements are examples of that. I do not believe all D's are birthers/911 Truthers. Why is it assumed that all Tea Partiers must be ignorant?

IF the fringe represent the whole, then you may want to look in your own closet...

Unless you agree with the views of Garofalo, Penn, Moore, McKinney...Etc.
