Washington - The 2010 election is turning into a class war. The wealthy and the powerful started it.

This is a strange development. President Obama, after all, has been working overtime to save capitalism. Wall Street is doing just fine and the rich are getting richer again. The financial reform bill passed by Congress was moderate, not radical.

Nonetheless, corporations and affluent individuals are pouring tens of millions of dollars into attack ads aimed almost exclusively at Democrats. One of the biggest political players, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, accepts money from foreign sources.

The chamber piously insists that none of the cash from abroad is going into its ad campaigns. But without full disclosure, there's no way of knowing if that's true or simply an accounting trick. And the chamber is just one of many groups engaged in an election-year spending spree.

This extraordinary state of affairs was facilitated by the U.S. Supreme Court's scandalous Citizens United decision, which swept away decades of restrictions on corporate spending to influence elections. The Republicans' success in blocking legislation that would at least have required the big spenders to disclose the sources of their money means voters have to operate in the dark.

The "logic" behind Citizens United is that third-party spending can't possibly be corrupting. The five-justice majority declared that "this court now concludes that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption. That speakers may have influence over or access to elected officials does not mean that those officials are corrupt. And the appearance of influence or access will not cause the electorate to lose faith in this democracy."

You can decide what's more stunning about this statement, its naivete or its arrogance.

If one side in the debate can overwhelm the political system with clandestine cash, which is what's now happening, is there any doubt that the side in question will buy itself a lot of influence? If that's not corruption, what exactly is it?

And how can five justices, who purport not to be political, sweep aside what elected officials themselves long ago concluded on the subject and claim to know what will or will not "cause the electorate to lose faith in this democracy"? Could anything undermine trust in the system more than secret contributions to shadowy groups spending the money on nasty ads?

The good news is that the class war is bringing a certain clarity to politics. It is also another piece of evidence for the radicalism of the current brand of conservatism. This, in turn, is forcing Democrats to defend a proposition they have been committed to since the days of Franklin Roosevelt but are often too timid to proclaim: that government has a legitimate and necessary role in making economic rules to protect individuals from abuse.

It has thus been both entertaining and educational to watch Republican Senate candidates in Connecticut, West Virginia, Alaska and Kentucky grapple with the impact of their bad-mouthing of minimum wage laws.

Conservative academics have warred against the minimum wage ever since FDR declared the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 perhaps "the most far-reaching program, the most far-sighted program for the benefit of workers that has ever been adopted here or in any other country."

These critics have never gained traction because most people think it's simple justice that those who work for a living be treated with a modicum of respect. Many voters who express skepticism about government in the abstract nonetheless favor laws that give a fighting chance to individuals with weaker bargaining positions in the marketplace.

The minimum wage battle underscores the difference between 2010-style conservatism and the conservatism of Dwight Eisenhower or even Ronald Reagan. The 2010 right actually imagines a return to the times prior to the New Deal and Teddy Roosevelt's Square Deal, the heady days before there were laws on wages and hours, environmental concerns and undue economic concentration.

The country doesn't need this class war, and it is irrational in any case. Practically no one, least of all Obama, is questioning the basics of the market system or proposing anything more than somewhat tighter economic regulations -- after the biggest financial collapse since the Great Depression -- and rather modest tax increases on the wealthy.

But even these steps are apparently too much for those financing all the television ads, which should lead voters to ask themselves: Who is paying for this? What do they really want? And who gave them the right to buy an election?

Obama is on the side of the People. The Republicans, and especially the five right-wing members of SCOTUS, are on the side of the Fat Cats.

You just have to remember the Golden Rule, EJ --

That's Bush Shadow class War

That's Bush Shadow class War CRIMES; and now, let US Be CLEAR, Obummer's siccing the Catfood Commission's FAT Feline's on US to"compromise" down to depressed benefits and elevated eligibility age. Watch what DEM Do, AGAIN!

I'm going to have to watch

I'm going to have to watch Rollerball again. Didn't that movie take place in some future where corporations ran everything?

Call me a conspiracy

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but could it be possible that the $9 billion missing from Iraq be funding the Republican attack ads? No one seemed to be interested in tracking that substantial sum and it would be a nice handy stash to dip into without draining the wealthy's largess.
Just sayin....

This otherwise gloomy

This otherwise gloomy opinion-piece contains a small glimmer of hope where it says: 'The good news is that the class war is bringing a certain clarity to politics...' And a reaffirmation '...that government has a legitimate and necessary role in making economic rules to protect individuals from abuse.'
If the anti-government forces have an unlimited resource of cash to buy promotional ads in the mainstream media, then a grassroots pro-government counter-force can assert a virtually unlimited promotion of their own views through the 'great equalizer' - the Internet (the middle class equalitarian's best friend). The wealthy corporations may 'own' the media, but the grassroots own the Internet. Use it! Express your own views through the Internet - and bypass the cash-greedy media that has chosen to befriend the anti-government interests.

after the rest of us starve

after the rest of us starve to death who will serve them their caviar?

My feeling is that we need

My feeling is that we need Johnson/Truman style of tough leadership. As when they sat down, against the opposition and signed the bill for Medicare.

The next step would have been a Democratic leadership, truly representing ordinary Americans. Sitting down to sign a bill opening up Medicare to the entire country.

But what we increasingly see is a government by the rich, for the rich, and about the rich. Unbelievable to see a "little old lady" -- carrying a tea bag sign, "Pay your bills," considering what a trip to the emergency room costs. And she's the embodiment of "ordinary America"?

More like Dick Army's propaganda campaign. Carried forth, even by these progressive newspapers by writing articles about the tea bag right as if they were a real force among "ordinary" Americans. Anyone with a simple understanding of a basic calculator knows they are not.

continued The Obamas have

continued

The Obamas have turned out to be a show for "please accept us." We look right, we act right, we dress right, our kids are right. It's too much. And the Republicans capitalize on the Democrats' b.s.

When are we going to see real leadership? If you're going to be spit on for a health care overhaul, or telephoned by right-wing whackos with death threats, you might as well make change that really counts ! Not another deal with corporate America.

The real class war will

The real class war will erupt when the poor and working class realize they've been used, duped, and robbed by the GOP/tea machine.
Then the fun begins.
The rich will be outnumbered 49 to 1.
A simple tip: read history. A clear example is the French Revolution. It wasn't that long ago.
So go ahead, GOP, target and harm the poor, the workers, the elderly, and the sick and infirm.
And see what happens.

I'm beginning to think that

I'm beginning to think that the seeds of some sort of civil war have been planted. When I look at the political landscape I see two parties that only in theory are different but in reality are not all that different from each other. So there is no political polarization going on.

Then I look at the social landscape and see the very people aligning themselves with far more extreme ideologies. The right has the extremist Tea Party, while the left, well, has no extremist party but liberals clearly are becoming moreso. So unlike in the political scene, the American people are becoming more polarized. And it is this polarization that could result in people who may have been friends now becoming enemies. Family members may turn on each other perhaps.

But it very much seems while the political parties are more similar with each other, the American people are grouping themselves into opposite camps. And when the people turn on each other, civil war can happen. Or at least chaos.

The real class war will

The real class war will never erupt as long as the proletariat is mollified by Saturday night football and the other sports so prevalent in our society. Escapism is the rule of the day for many people. They would all have to be on the street, without food or health care and dieing before a revolution would take place and the ruling class in America will keep them just above that. Also, the working people seem to want to vote the republicans in due to issues that have nothing to do with their welfare, like gay marriage, abortion. And as long as they do this, the workers will be kept down and in the gutter.

There is nothing "in shadow"

There is nothing "in shadow" about his combat. If one pays attention - or has ever paid attention - one can see this moment only as the most recent stage of a combat in an ongoing struggle.
Yes, the besieged classes need to wake up from their dreams and from the chatter of their ignorant companions to realize their continuing defeats.

Are FOREIGN sources former

Are FOREIGN sources former American companies that have moved off shore, or are they foreign companies with large operations here like Toyota, Honda, and InBev? I would think that all of them are looking a stable regulatory environment, which the Obama team certainly has not provided, therefore they have every right to do all that they can to improve business conditions.

As far as FST CATS go I think that the laast 18 months have proven that they OWN both the Rep's and the Dem's. The Tea Party group MAY be the only way out.

Let the upper 2% keep it up

Let the upper 2% keep it up - they seem to have forgotten what happened in the 1930s- a few people looked to fascism for answers, but a lot more went to the left.

"The appearance of influence

"The appearance of influence or access will not cause the electorate to lose faith in this democracy."

The conservative majority of the Supreme Court
have soiled themselves and the court with this decision.

Re: The real class war will

Re: The real class war will never erupt as long as the proletariat is mollified by Saturday night football and the other sports so prevalent in our society.

You will know something's up when TV viewing drops by another 15%, it's not safe to clean your guns and watch TV at the same time

The real class war is

The real class war is getting ready to erupt at any time. Many of the people that have been duped for years are beginning to wake up. This is because the actions of the GOP are openly showing there cards. It is beginning to be very obvious what there desires are. This is why the polarization is taking place so quickly. There are more and more people everyday that are seeing for themselves what assholes they have been backing all this time. These are the ones that are the most riled up. I do not blame them, when they discover that they have been used for so very long. If we can save the situation before this next election so that the democrat's hold their own this will prolong the inevitable class explosion. If on the other hand they do not hold their own and the democrat's loose control. Then look for the war of 2011.

Does that foreign money also

Does that foreign money also come from Hamas and Iran who want theGOP to win to continue supporting all their corrupt government with American taxpayers money??

Americans talk a good fight

Americans talk a good fight but when was the last time you've seen one; not in my lifetime & I'm 67. The fact that the rich no longer need unions to divert the masses from revolt tells it all (no commie alternative). I look at the French, at the Greeks in the streets & I compare them to the American reality show/sports watchers in the USA. The rich & their media keep telling people that Americans can not afford entitlements like SS & Medicare & no one asks, "why not we are a rich country, are we not?" Should the old people have no Medicare? Should older Americans have no minimal pensions. Are we reduced to dog eat dog, will the rich never be satisfied. Billionaires pay 15% tax on their cap gains & every low paid worker pays about the same on his/her FICA (yes Virginia the employer portion is your wages). I lived in the USA for 6 years & I never figgered it out; on an individual basis you are generous to a fault but just ask you for a dollar in tax so a poor kid can get a decent schooling & look out. Why do you have no desire for a decent more egalitarian society? All Europe is full of people rich beyond your wildest dreams & yet workers still get a decent deal; why can the USA not do this. We are all in debt, we hear. What we don't hear is "who are we in debt to?", "where did they get the money?", what exactly is money anyway, where does it come from & who controls it. It's almost like asking the same questions about god & in fact it is the same. Both are faith based & have no intrinsic value & both have been and are used to control the masses. I think the lack of religion & the unionization rate go a long way towards explaining why the European workers have it so much better. Good luck, American hard working people, you are gonna need it because none of your elites gives a damn about you!

Two things, Dionne. First,

Two things, Dionne.

First, what's this about your apologizing for that out-and-out bigot, Marty Perez?

Second, that Obama brings the issue of corporate "giving" into the campaign at all is an absolute outrage. The quintessential product of corporate bribes himself in 2008, this vacuity has moral standing to raise the question of corporate campaign contributions of any kind, from anywhere? I doubt it.

The Working Class in America

The Working Class in America is rudderless and Leaderless!

The professional Ruling

The professional Ruling Class and the Corporate Robber Barons are using divide and conquer tactics to stir up division in the working class. This leads to a more uniform vote, slightly favoring one set of crooks over another.

We need to have term limits on both the House and Senate in order to end the professional ruling class.

Then maybe we can get something good done for the American People.

(Spam filter circumvention

(Spam filter circumvention 1)

A large part of the polarization that permits the right wing to exploit, for their own ends, the rage of the culturally conservative is that this demographic, which should be more aligned with the left on class issues, is that they are finding spiteful joy in angering the left so much.

The more the left wing berates and chastises them for their apparent stupidity in backing candidates like Palin and regressives like Beck, the more they delight. They resent feeling so exploited by what they see as the liberal and intellectual elite, no matter how fantastical that seems to us. Their non-critical outlooks are easy pickings for the power elite adept at the science of perception management.

(Spam filter circumvention

(Spam filter circumvention 2)

If ever there was a time when the interests of the left align with those most victimized by the policies of the corporatocracy (or, really, vorocracy), it is now. These people are our natural allies in fighting a common plutocratic oppressor. It's unfortunate that instead of building bridges to them we only succeed in sending them into the enemy's arms by our mockery.

Are there not serious differences between us? Yes, of course. But rather than focus on those, rather than succumb to ease with which the power elite divide and conquer us, we need to focus on what we have in common. (Apparent) adversaries must unite against a greater foe if they hope to have a chance of survival.

The right has the guns and

The right has the guns and the left has the logic. How will that end up?

The Democrats are in danger

The Democrats are in danger of being turned out of office because they gave away too much to corporate interests. And they are going to be replaced by candidates bought and paid for by - you guessed it - corporate interests. The more things change the more they stay the same.

The Democrats are PART OF

The Democrats are PART OF the class war:

1. They saddled us with NAFTA, and CONTINUE to support it.

2. They saddled us with the WTO, which is NAFTA on a global scale.

3. They voted to approve the fascists on the Supreme Court that gave us the Citizens United decision. (Look at Scalia's Wikipedia page, and you'll see this fascist was approved by ALL (100%) of the Democrats (& Republicans) in the Senate.)

4. Most importantly: The Democrats didn't immediately begin impeachment proceedings against the fascist Supreme Court "justices" (I use that term loosely) who committed this vicious assault on our democracy with the Citizens United decision.

Folks, it's a rigged game. If you vote Democratic, you STILL get a corrupt party in power whose first priority is protecting and increasing corporate profits.

It won't change while you keep voting for the corporate parties.

The solution: Vote Green Party! It sends a strong message to the corporate politicians that their fascist, pro-business agenda will lose them votes.

It still sends a strong message even if the Green candidate doesn't win. 1% - 2% of the vote can flip a close election. Losing votes to the Green Party is something the Democrats can't ignore, like they ignore your emails and letters. It's the only thing they understand.

VOTE GREEN!

The fiscal conservatives of

The fiscal conservatives of the very early 80's don't exist any more. They are displaced by new GOP reactionaries from corporate control aren't real Republicans at all. There is no one out there on the right for the old fashioned Republicans, decent people who would like to do the right thing. The new Tea Party are radicals scaring up Pastors and Sheep. Similarities between them and fascist Germany in the early 1930's are there. The private and anonymous money which fuels them is dangerous. Oddly, some of the rural poor in North Carolina understand this, with their bumper sticker "A Poor Man who votes Republican is like a Chicken Voting For Colonel Sanders".

Who gave them the right to

Who gave them the right to buy an election?

Dionne answers that: The Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United and Republicans who have now decided they are against donor information disclosure.

Who gave them the right to

Who gave them the right to buy an election?

Dionne answers that: The Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United and the Republicans who recently decided to oppose donor disclosure information.

George Soros, is that you?

George Soros, is that you?

The rich are buying the

The rich are buying the election -- and trying to destroy everything Obama is doing -- because they are greedy, plain and simple. They don't want to share even a little of their money with the less well off. Raise their taxes even modestly? Hey, no way!

Ever since the early Reagan years, they've had it really good. But never forget this: Their money is their money! They need their three houses, two Jaguars, boats, teams of servants, private schools, gated communities, etc. As the earth's resources become more scarce, the rich move to safeguard their own.

The rich, as Buffett said,

The rich, as Buffett said, are winning.

How do you explain that, Mr. Bones?

In no other country on earth would the common people tolerate the amount of abuse being showered on the American worker with increasing vehemence every day.

Maybe there's just no turn left in the worm.

Looking into my crystal

Looking into my crystal ball, I can only see the past. History is a cruel mistress of the inane and fractious humans, but she will point out the future by showing them the past; if they would only see. They have eyes and many can read; even a few can understand that the time lines of the past run unerringly through the present into the future as surely as night follows day. As we look back into the world of the 1920's, we can now clearly see the events and persona that drove the subsequent slide into the Great Depression and sowed the seeds of WW II. One would think that humans could now understand the effects of those bygone actions in terms of their immediate future. Alas, only a few seem to make the connection and their voices are whipped away in the gathering whirlwind.

EJD, Jr.: You are so

EJD, Jr.: You are so involved in your theories that you don't have one foot on the floor (you're not grounded).
the Oligarchy owns and directs the whole system - Dems and Reps alike. There is no truth of any kind in D.C. Bush/Cheney or Obama - they are all deceitful, self-indulgent, POLITICIANS who perpetrate the corrupt system. As long as there is the Federal Income Tax System with the thousands of Tax lobbyists paying off congress and bureaucrats -- nothing with change for the better. Get real, Get educated, Get back to commonsense and Constitutional law -- not illegal Bill of Right changes that have destroyed Free Enterprise (Free Enterprise is NOT Capitalist Imperialism practiced by both Dems and Reps). FairTax.org study it or silence thy mouth.
