There's No Time Like Now to Be an Activist
Time to be an activist. (Illustration: Jared Rodriguez / t r u t h o u t)

Eighty-one tons of mercury is emitted into the atmosphere each year as a result of electric power generation. Every square mile of ocean hosts 46,000 pieces of floating plastic.

Here it comes ...

Every second, 10,000 gallons of gasoline are burned in the US. Each year, Americans use 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides.

Wait for it ...

Every two seconds, a human being starves to death. Every 46 seconds, a woman is raped in America. Every day, 29,158 children under the age of five die from preventable causes - every single day.

We're almost there ...

Ninety percent of the large fish in the ocean and 80 percent of the world's forests are gone. Each day, 200,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed, over 100 plant and animal species go extinct, and 13 million tons of toxic chemicals released across the globe.

What an amazing time to be an activist ...

No, I'm not being cynical. I'm simply listening to the sound of opportunity knocking ... kicking down the damn door, you might say.

When else in all of human history has there been a time when we were in better position to shape the future? Ecosystems are screaming for mercy and our land base is practically an endangered species. What we do (or don't do) in the next few years could quite possibly tilt us all toward either the point of no return or a far more sane form of society. In other words, each and every one of us can take part - right now - in creating the most important social changes ever imagined. Here's how:

1. How to Be a Good Organizer

a) Spend some time thinking about trees.
b) Imagine what clear cutting looks like, sounds like and feels like.
c) Remind yourself that 80 percent of the world's forests are gone.
d) Be a good organizer.

2. How to Find Like-Minded Comrades Ready to Start Right Now

a) Go to the beach.
b) Smell the salty air and listen to the waves.
c) Remind yourself that 90 percent of the large fish in the ocean are gone.
d) Find like-minded comrades ready to start right now.

3. How to Plan a Protest That Does More Than March

a) Remind yourself that 200,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed each day. Picture a planet devoid of rainforests. Picture a human body without lungs.
b) Remind yourself that a woman is raped every 46 seconds in America. Visualize the terror and trauma of these experiences.
c) Remind yourself that 29,158 children under the age of five die from preventable causes each day. Imagine the feelings of grief, sorrow and loss.
d) Plan a protest that does more than march.

4. How to Give a Rousing Speech That Results in Immediate Direct Action

a) Find a quiet place.
b) Close your eyes and breathe deeply.
c) Think about animals in slaughterhouses and laboratories. Think about humans in prisons. Think about civilians in a war zone. Think about someone you love dying of cancer caused by corporate-created toxins.
d) Give a rousing speech that results in immediate direct action.

5. How to Bring Down the Dominant Culture

a) Ask yourself if you're content with your relatively high quality of life being possible thanks to the poor quality of life of so many others elsewhere.
b) Ask yourself if you're content with your relative freedom being possible thanks to the oppression of so many others elsewhere.
c) Accept that we are all accomplices to the perpetual global crime called "civilization."
d) Bring down the dominant culture.

This isn't about skin color, gender, or what parcel of geography you happen to have been born on. I'm not talking about party affiliations, incremental reform or what sky god you've chosen to worship. It's all about recognizing a crisis and taking the appropriate measures.

We're on the brink of economic, social and environmental collapse. What an extraordinary time to be alive. How lucky are we? We've been trusted with the most vital mission of all time: survival.

Mickey Z. is probably the only person on the planet to have appeared in both a karate flick with Billy "Tae Bo" Blanks and a political book with Howard Zinn. He is the author of 9 books - most recently "Self Defense for Radicals" and his second novel, "Dear Vito." He is a regular writer for Planet Green and can be found on the web at www.mickeyz.net.

Add to the list: Hold

Add to the list: Hold politicians accountable, even those who promise hope, perpetuate war, use partisan division to cloak a corporatist agenda in health care, encourage offshore drilling, and spout hollow rhetoric.

Probably more useful than thinking about trees.

During WWII people rationed,

During WWII people rationed, saved hoisery for parachuttes, worked and sacrificed for the war at home, in factories and other places and situations against Hitler. We won the war partially because the people collaborated and were willing to work with each other for a common purpose. The problem with this writing is to forget that America is not longer the nation it once was, nor are its people who no longer have a sense of community of sharing. We are lost. Our cultural extinction has arrived and there is no stopping it. Social changes in this nation have been relatively short lived. Twitter will not take care of trees or oceans. Nor can twitter, and all the other forms of mass communication bring us together in some common discussion about these end times of sort. Rather, we are sliding, through the land and oceans seeing our own debris and have no capacity whatsoever of turning this thing around.

I think the Tea Party

I think the Tea Party activists have already gotten this message. Gotta love it!

"Add to the list"

"Add to the list" Politicians accountable? We've been thinking about this for centuries. The system is rigged, and it won't happen. We haven't, for the most part, been thinking about trees. Those who have, Muir and Ms.Butterfly for example, have tended to be more successful.

With statistics like these,

With statistics like these, birth control should be free around the world. Thanks for the article Mickey Z.

I hope every REPUBLICAN of

I hope every REPUBLICAN of this planet will read this article everyday before they go to work!

Make sure to do something,

Make sure to do something, anything, at least EVERY day to make the world a better, healthier, happier, fairer, more sustainable place!

Make saving the world your business, your mission, your hobby, your sport, your calling, your addiction, your therapy, your reason, your legacy, your love.

Since I do not want to

Since I do not want to polarize politics and realize that many politicians of many parties have attempted to lead in a moral and just way, I'd like to replace my last comment by this one:

I hope every PERSON on this planet will read this article every day and post in their homes as we all become more environmentally responsible.

Polarize the exploitative

Polarize the exploitative violence of Wall Street.. Anyone think that the US violence in Iraq and Afghanistan are unrelated to the Housing Bubble?

Don't sleep at the wheel kids, it's going to get nasty unless we prevent the bastards from going the jack boot/rubber truncheon route.

YES! Make yourself a target!

YES! Make yourself a target! What a great idea!

As soon as feasibly possible, I'm gonna load up and start killin' me some pigs.

Instead of walking down a

Instead of walking down a street carrying a protest sign, why not engage yourself in some guerrilla gardening and overgrow the government? Protesting accomplishes nothing, the millions that demanded Bush be impeached didn't make it happen.

Thank you Mickey. I will cut

Thank you Mickey. I will cut and paste and circulate this article. To those who advocate violence rather than acting as responsible citizens in non-violent and morally suasive ways that protect civil and human rights, you are abdicating your civil responsibilities to human beings.
Grow up. Take positive action. Get involved. Speak out. Run for election...et cetera. Violence is a last resort, not the first thing that ought to come to mind.
Demonizing is not what is needed. Thoughtfulness is.

Thank you, Mickey. "Perhaps,

And what has violence solved?? It just breeds more hate and violence.

A good place to start is in

A good place to start is in our corporate dominated schools. Get rid of the poison that call;s Coca-Cola. Then get all your colleagues on side and say We strike until our schools are de-politicized with this useless and brainles and unremitting testing that everybody is suffering from. We have to give our young people a chance to learn something useful about the world they live. It is dying, it needs our help.We have to refuse to teach in the present circumstances when feeble-brained and morally bankrupt people like Dubbya can design our educational goals. If we all stand together and say NO, this is enough. We are not your slaves any more. We will design the curriculum. Not the corporate sharks, not the Murdoch's, not the Trumps. etc.etc. We want a better world than this one for our kids. Mass strike needed. Very peaceful. All of us shoud buy out and say: You have a problem: we will help you fix it. But right now you have to stop testing and LISTEN.

Work against the re-election

Work against the re-election of Barack Obama. It is better to have an enemy that does not pretend to be your friend.

i agree with you, but i have

i agree with you, but i have a problem with your facts. you should provide references in order to back up your numbers. a cursory examination on the web indicates that most of the information you've provided is grossly overestimated. where are you obtaining your numbers from?

as someone who is concerned about the state of our fragile world, i think it's essential that 'we' provide accurate information that's properly referenced in order to build our case. we must be our own harshest skeptics.

For over a Half CENTURY now,

For over a Half CENTURY now, there have been Insufficient FOLLOWERS!

What you say all sounds good

What you say all sounds good and to a degree is correct . There is no time like now to be an activist.
10,00 gallons of gas are burned every second. Yes , there is a tremendous amount of waste such as Al Gore and Nancy Pelosi flying on private jets to reach their destinations instead of flying ["1 st" class ] on commercial airlines . After all they are SUPERIOR to the rest of us . You then say that 81TONS OF mercury is emitted into the atmosphere as a result of electric generation , I agree we should go back to candles or kerosene lamps.
Every 2 seconds a human being starves to death , could it be that people in the 3 rd world are totally irresponsible and are not concerned about birth control and responsible behavior ?
Every 46 seconds a woman is raped in America
The facts are that 90 % of these women are WHITE , raped by BLACKS but it would be "politically incorrect" for you to report this. This is F.B.I. statistics .
You say that every day 29,158 children under the age of 5 die from preventable diseases BUT what you do not mention is that the majority of these children are 3 rd world whose parents are TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE . Is this my responsibly ? I work very hard , long hours to try to live a comfortable life style .
You say 200,000 acres of rain forests are destroyed every day . A good example of destruction of forests is in Haiti . They have totally cut down forests so that now the top soil is being washed away .
Will you print my response ? I doubt it , it is of course NOT politically correct . Therefore how can you expect my financial support.
