Jim Hightower | Obama's War

by: Jim Hightower, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to war we go! Pound the drums loudly, stand with your country proudly!

Wait, wait, wait -- hold it right there. Cut the music, slow the rush, and let's all ponder what Barack Obama, Roberts Gates, Stanley McChrystal and Co. are getting us into ... and whether we really want to go there. After all, just because the White House and the Pentagon brass are waving the flag and insisting that a major escalation of America's military mission in Afghanistan is a "necessity" doesn't mean it is ... or that We the People must accept it.

Remember the wisdom of Mark Twain about war-whooping generals and politicians: "Loyalty to the country, always. Loyalty to the government when it deserves it."

How many more dead and mangled American soldiers does the government's "new" Afghan policy deserve? How many more tens of billions of dollars should we let them siphon from our public treasury to fuel their war policy? How much more of our country's good name will they squander on what is essentially a civil war?

We've been lied to for nearly a decade about "success" in Iraq and Afghanistan -- why do the hawks deserve our trust that this time will be different?

Their rationales for escalation are hardly confidence boosters. The goal, we're told, is to defeat the al-Qaida terrorist network that threatens our national security. Yes, but al-Qaida is not in Afghanistan! Nor is it one network. It has metastasized, with strongholds now in Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, Yemen and Somalia, plus even having enclaves in England and France.

Well, claims Obama himself, we must protect the democratic process in Afghanistan. Does he think we have suckerwrappers around our heads? America's chosen leader over there is President Hamid Karzai -- a preening incompetent who was "elected" this year only through flagrant fraud and whose government is controlled by warlords, rife with corruption and opposed by the great majority of Afghans.

During the election campaign from July through October, 195 Americans were killed and more than 1,000 wounded to protect this guy's "democratic process." Why should even one more American die for Karzai?

Finally, Washington's war establishment asserts that adding some 30,000 more troops will let us greatly expand and train the Afghan army and police force during the next couple of years so they can secure their own country and we can leave. Mission accomplished!

Nearly every independent military analyst, however, says this assertion is not just fantasy, it's delusional -- it'll take at least 10 years to raise Afghanistan's largely illiterate and corrupt security forces to a level of barely adequate, costing us taxpayers more than $4 billion a year to train and support them.

Obama has been taken over by the military industrial hawks and national security theorists who play war games with other people's lives and money. I had hoped Obama might be a more forceful leader who would reject the same old interventionist mindset of those who profit from permanent war. But his newly announced Afghan policy shows he is not that leader.

So, we must look elsewhere, starting with ourselves. The first job of a citizen is to keep your mouth open. Obama is wrong on his policy -- deadly wrong -- and those of you who see this have both a moral and patriotic duty to reach out to others to inform, organize and mobilize our grassroots objections, taking common sense to high places.

Also, look to leaders in Congress who are standing up against Obama's war and finally beginning to reassert the legislative branch's constitutional responsibility to oversee and direct military policy. For example, Rep. Jim McGovern is pushing for a specific, congressionally mandated exit strategy; Rep. Barbara Lee wants to use Congress' control of the public purse strings to stop Obama's escalation; and Rep. David Obey is calling for a war tax on the richest Americans to put any escalation on-budget, rather than on a credit card for China to finance and future generations to pay.

This is no time to be deferential to executive authority. Stand up. Speak out. It's our country, not theirs. We are America -- ultimately, we have the power and the responsibility.

Let's just declare victory

Let's just declare victory and come home, after all with Afghan literacy rates at about 10%, it's not like they'll be able to read it in tomorrow's paper. They won't be able to read about Obama's 2012 election loss to the GOP candidate either.

This is still not Obama's

This is still not Obama's war. This is still the confounding mess he was left from the Bush administration. Bush screwed it up for 7 years and now it will take some time for Obama to unravel it.

Pres GBush did the great

Pres GBush did the great disservice of letting alquaeida-taliban-etal group DEFINE the situation by falling right into their trap: 'we will fight them over there so we will not fight them here'. This was a BIG mistake & we are continuing to let them define the situation, by draining us. They 'read us' right.

Notice how there is no

Notice how there is no reporting on Iraq anymore? That's all mopped up, it's all fine now, is what the controlled propaganda media machine wants us to believe. CNBC even running stories on business opportunities in Iraq! Never mind that it's too dangerous for reporters to go there, the most dangerous place on Earth, according to the latest list, for journalists. Obama has been wrong on everything, and a liar also on many issues, like Iraq, Gitmo, Banking regulation, transparency in gov't, auto bailouts, AIG, jobs "saved"(that's fraud, in my book), continued FHA stealth buying/assuming of bad mortgages from Fannie & Freddie, Afghanistan escalation, landmine legislation, etc. That's for starters.

Remember, when you think of

Remember, when you think of Pres. Obama getting the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, who Nobel said it should go to: According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who: “ during the preceding year [...] shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

I had the feeling that

I had the feeling that nothing was going to change in our international belligerence when Gates stayed on as Sec. of WAR. These fears have now come to pass. The military is now running the show. The bottomless greed of the Pentagon Inc is running the show ... and sucking this nation dry economically, and sucking the soul out of our experiment with Democracy®. I was so sickened by the pathetic "they hate U.S. because were free" tone towards the end of the speech that I walked ... Pay no attention to what has happened to America ... Dancing with the Stars is on ... and who is going to make it to the NFL play-0ffs, THIS is what's REALLY important isn't it? ... you know rearranging deck chair on the Titanic.

Yes, let's get behind the

Yes, let's get behind the few brave and honest voices in Congress; let's mobilize grassroots strength to convince other politicians that they, too, need to speak up for sanity, and end these foreign wars now.

I agree with 16:09 —

I agree with 16:09 — Anonymous. It is now up to Congress to refuse to fund the war. They are up for re-election next year. One sure way of not getting reelected is to fund this war, albeit with non-existing funds. Save the national debt from getting even bigger, Congress, and vote NO for more war funding.

I'm not sure if I like this

I'm not sure if I like this more than anyone else, but Obama inherited a "Vietnam" of a presidency from the Bush administration - so many issues without any good answers. We're 10 months in, and he's got a lot to tackle. In my opinion, branding the guy as anything at this point is completely irresponsible.

And China owns us without

And China owns us without having to fire a bullet of their own. They just pulled out their check books and pens. We need to rebuild our own nation, restore our own democracy, take care of our own infrastructure, and bring our troops home with the money we can spend here, doing what we need here, not in a foreign country with privatized war profiteers racking in huge profits off our warriors blood and broken lives. What did our goverment do with war racketeers during the civil war? We must tend to the the stick in our own eye before getting the stone out of our neighbors eye. Bring our troops home now!

this is the most

this is the most disappointing thing i've ever read from hightower, whose comments generally seem grounded in the specifics of situations. at no point here does he address the specific features of obama's plan other than the number of troops and the intent to train the afgan army. he doesn't address the stated reasons, only that "al quida is not in afganistan" (they wouldn't return if the Taliban invited them back in? that wouldn't have any bad consequences for us security?), he notes karzi' notorious corruption, but doesn't mention that the obama administration essentially forced him to acknowledge that he was not fairly elected, he criticizes "the same old interventionism," but when was the last time any us administration held as long and as well informed a debate on how to configure an intervention? also just happened to not mention the plan to begin draw down in 18 months. in short hightower here omits all the points that he can't characterize as "the same old" policy. i guess he thinks that an al queda occupied afganistan next to a militant pashtun area of pakistan that has considerable clasdenstine support from elements of the pakistani security force would be no es problama!

This is not "Obama's War";

This is not "Obama's War"; this is STILL "Charlie Wilson's War" . . .

Megalobamia! The presidency

Megalobamia! The presidency has gone to the man's head - he thinks he can actually change the course of history in and for Afghanistan. Mr. President, a nation where a citizen can be picked up any time and disappear, without recourse, has nothing to teach anybody anywhere. Embarrassment prevents me from citing historical examples. This looks like a replay of

This looks like a replay of Vietnam which lasted from 1960 thru 1975 . By 1965 many realized we could not win but did not want to back down , after all we are the most powerful nation in the world with an unlimited amount of Weapons of Mass Destruction being used against a basically poorly armed 3 rd world impoverished country . Why couldn't we win ? Because we invaded their country and destroyed their country , we murdered their women , children and many innocents . We put a corrupt puppet / regime into power that would do our bidding , a regime that was hated by most South Vietnamese. The Vietnamese military government was armed , trained and yet after X X X years still were not able to take over and defend their own country even though they were better armed than North Vietnam . The Viet Cong [ north & south ] were labeled Terrorists when considering that were fighting to free their country from aggressors from the other side of the world. They actually were "FREEDOM FIGHTERS " who were willing to die for their country . Our aggression cost us the lives of 58,159 young U.S. boys , 2000 missing and 303,000 + seriously wounded. Our aggression also cost the lives of 3 to 4 MILLION Vietnamese and 1 1/2 to 2 MILLION Laotians and Cambodians. We have now been in Afghanistan for 9 years and no signs of improvement , repeating the same mistakes as we did in Vietnam . We sprayed TOXIC Agent Orange on Vietnamese rice fields to destroy their food supply but strangely enough the Taliban 15 + years ago outlawed the growth of Poppies and the end product ....Heroin but the U.S. government makes no effort to destroy and outlaw these crops , why ? Could it be that as long as the War Lords and the corrupt government of President Hamid Karzai are allowed to reap the hundreds of millions of profits from the heroin trade , they will cooperate with us ? This will end the same as the Vietnam fiasco , how many more innocent U.S. boys " serving their country " will have to DIE IN VAIN before we call it quits? A SOLUTION ! We must DEMAND that every year , 25 % of our Congressmen , their wives and children be drafted and sent to the front lines to fight along side our troops for a full 1 year tour. Then the 2 nd 25 % will be sent , etc. They should prove their resolve and patriotism or SHUT UP !

Just my thought— US will

Just my thought— US will not leave in 18 months....conditions etc etc. We have made great progress, to leave now would undo all of the great accomplishments, would lead to return of blah blah blah. A small number of troops may leave...but most will stay...a precipitous withdrawal would blah blah blah The Afghan army will be "making great strides" but not quite ready. Etc. NATO will remain to complete the training...etc etc. One question: Who trains the Taliban?

With 80-90% of Afghans

With 80-90% of Afghans ILLITERATE, Obama is insulting all American's intelligence by claiming the aim is to "TRAIN" 400,000 Afghan police and army. This is pure deception, a big fat LIE, regardless of what Mr. O inherited, that's a stupid argument. We inherited more lies and deception.

As much as I would like to

As much as I would like to support Mr. Obama as President, it is becoming increasingly clear that he is NOT in charge. The militarist/corporatist reich wing which operates largely behind the curtain has overwhelmed the corporatist/financial-economic reich wing and is now directing the expansion of U. S. Empire. Hightower's points are well taken, as are some others on this thread. However, I would point out that massive anti-war demonstrations across the globe failed to deter the Bush/Cheney cabal's march to war, both in Afghanistan and Iraq. For 8 long years and untold hordes of Afghani, Iraqi, U. S., NATO, and Coalition of the Coerced lives have been sacrificed in these two pursuits. To what end/purpose? "War on terrorism," "Eradicating/Punishing al-Qa'eda for 9/11," "Defeating the dictator, Saddam," "Defeating/Punishing the Taliban," "Preventing Seizure of Pakistan & Its Nukes," "Establishing Democratic Regimes in the Middle East," yada, yada, yada...all "rationales" run up the flag-pole to try to get Americans and the rest of the world to salute one or more. Some have drunk the Kool-Aid and believe one or more. The rationale, however, is probably much more sinister. If one reviews the blueprint for U. S. domination of the world, published by Project for a New American Century in 1997, and subsequent publications of principals in that organization, and if one observes who those principals are in comparison with the most vociferous and avid advocates of both these wars, an agenda begins to emerge and become more visible. Next on the list is Iran, with the war-mongering drum-beat escalating in the background of the "New Way Forward" in Afghanistan. After that, Syria and Lebanon. Occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan provide military launch-pads for a pincer campaign to begin after aerial bombardment of Iranian military, alleged and known nuclear, and essentially indiscriminate civilian targets that "could be"/"might be" engaged in nuclear weapons research. The big, unasked question, then, is "Who benefits?" After reviewing available data, I've reached my conclusion, and trust others can do the same.
