Update: An Army spokesman now says the Pentagon will investigate soldiers' claims that they were punished for refusing to attend the Christian-themed concert.

Pvt. Anthony Smith is the type of guy who stands up for what he believes in. That's why he decided to hold his commanding officers accountable for punishing him and fellow soldiers after they refused to attend an evangelical Christian rock concert at the Fort Eustis military post in Virginia.

After a day of training at Fort Eustis, Smith and other trainees were normally released to have personal time, but on May 13, Smith and dozens of others were "required" to march in formation to a concert headlined by an evangelical Christian rock band. Smith spent six months training at Fort Eustis before moving to Arizona to serve on active duty with the National Guard.

"No option was presented to us off the bat," Smith told Truthout about the required concert.

The Commanding General's Spiritual Fitness Concert that Smith and others were told to attend was headlined by BarlowGirl, a "band of tender-hearted, beautiful young women who aren't afraid to take an aggressive, almost warrior-like stance when it comes to spreading the gospel and serving God," according to the group's web site.

The group Smith marched with included at least two Muslim soldiers who fell out of rank and stopped marching on their own, according to a first-hand account published by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

Once outside the concert, Smith and the other trainees were finally given an option and told to split into two groups: those who wanted to attend, and those who did not. Smith and about 80 others decided not to attend, even though they were obviously being "pressured" to do so. Smith and the others were sent back to their barracks on "lockdown," a punishment that Smith said withholds even basic freedoms like using their own electronics.

The concert was part of a series of "spiritual fitness" music events at Fort Eustis and nearby Fort Lee instituted by born-again Christian Gen. James E. Chambers, according to an article on the Army's web site.

"They call them 'spiritual' events, but the vast majority of spiritual events are Christian-based," Smith said.

Smith said that the events often involve Bible readings and testimonies from evangelicals.

Headlining acts like BarlowGirl cost tens of thousands of dollars, and researchers with the MRFF later discovered that the Department of Defense has awarded multi-million dollar contracts for consultants behind spiritual fitness events.

A spokesperson for Fort Eustis did not have any information or statements prepared regarding the May 13 incident as of Friday afternoon.

"I'm not somebody who just stands down to pressure and gives in," Smith said about choosing not to attend the concert. "But there were so many people who weren't willing to stand up for themselves."

So, Smith and another anonymous soldier decided to take action. They filed an Equal Opportunity (EO) complaint against their commanding officers, but Smith said the complaint fell on deaf ears.

Smith said the first EO officer they spoke with told them that nothing was wrong, and their complaint would simply become another "statistic." Smith and the anonymous solider sought out other EO officers and took their case up the chain of command.

"We were wasting our breath," he said.

Smith said his commanding officers did offer an apology, but asserted that they did nothing wrong on May 13 and it was perfectly within their "rights" to march Smith and his fellow soldiers wherever they wanted, evangelical Christian event or otherwise.

Barlow Girl band member Lauren Barlow said if she and the other members of the group knew soldiers were being forced to attend the concert and were then punished for refusing to attend "we would have said something."

"That's horrible," Barlow tweeted in response to the revelations first published Thursday by MRFF's head researcher, Chris Rodda. "We never knew that. We thought they had a choice. If we would have known we would have said something."

Smith turned to the MRFF, an organization that represents 19, 200 military personnel and veterans, according to founder Michael "Mikey" Weinstein.

Weinstein called Smith a hero for "breaking the silence barrier" and "speaking truth to power."

He said that Smith and the others who were pressured into attending the concert - and then punished if they chose otherwise - were "spiritually raped by their commanding officers." Weinstein, an Air Force Academy graduate, said that service members are supposed to defend the Constitution, which clearly establishes the separation of church and state.

Weinstein questioned what would have happened if Smith's commanding officer was a Muslim or atheist and demanded that his subordinates attend an Islamic or secular music event.

"He would have had his head cut off," Weinstein said.

Weinstein said that a majority of MRFF clients are Christians who are told that they are "not the right kind of Christian" while serving in the military.

Weinstein considers Smith a hero, but for Smith, the truth is quite simple: he is just doing his duty as a defender of his country and Constitution.

I've always stood up to my beliefs, it is kind of ridiculous that I have to deal with this in the military," Smith said.

Apparently separation of

Apparently separation of church & state is another one of those Great American Myths. Much like 'equal opportunity' and 'freedom of the press'.

I saw this crap coming way

I saw this crap coming way back in '74 just before I retired out of the military. At the time the Xtians were loading the military with their "Army of God" personnel and I was told that my kind were going to be extinct as far as the "new" military went. I was seeing at the time hundreds of new officers and enlisted who did NOT believe in the separation of Church and State and felt that everyone in the military had to either convert to their style of religion or be forced out.

Today I am no longer living in the United States, have become a French National and other than the fact that I served honorably and faithfully for 20 years defending the Right of Free Speach and the Constitution of the United States, I have pretty much given up all hope on the country of my birth. I will probably never return, and really don't miss any of what you have become. I now live as a minority in a nation of people with brown skin and a totally different culture. They treat me as an equal and as a citizen. Something that I do not see in the "NEW" United States today.

It's bad enough when our

It's bad enough when our precious tax dollars go overwhelmingly to wage war on innocent civilians abroad instead of to improve our country's health, education and infrastructure. It's unconscionable when they are used to fund "mandatory" religious concerts for the military. Soldiers should NOT be coerced into attending such events, and they should definitely not be punished for electing not to attend. I'm sick of this headlong rush toward Christian extremism in the U.S. military. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? This country is becoming unhinged. When are we going to rise up and scream, "ENOUGH, ALREADY!"?

Good for Pfc. Smith! I hope

Good for Pfc. Smith! I hope he gets that whacko General James E. Chambers kicked out of the Army. Chambers obviously is too dumb or too anti-American constitution to serve the country well.

While we're on the subject, I often wondered if Cpl. Pat Tillman was deliberately "fragged" by his own "friendly fire" because he was an atheist. I wouldn't put it past some of these fundamentalist religious bible-thumpers running amok in the military to do so.

Wouldn't be a bit surprised

Wouldn't be a bit surprised if Cpl. Tillman was killed by a "good" Christian soldier who forgot one of the Commandments that day. What a bunch of hypocrites! Part of the reason I am no longer affiliated with a church of any kind. No wonder the people in the Middle East think this is a modern Crusade!

This country was founded on

This country was founded on this thing called CHRISTIANITY. Go to another country if ur bothered by what Uncle Sam expects from you. Ther is only one rule in the service, Do as you are told. What are you going to do in battle. "Sorry sarg, he's got blue eyes, I can't shoot him!" Man Up, Son get your ball back in ur pants and learn what you proble needed before you joined. GOD!

It is dangerous to have a

It is dangerous to have a military bonded to a religious point of view, rather than simple allegiance to the US Constitution and to civilian control of the military, as headed by the President.

If one of those soldiers had to choose between serving his/her country and serving his/her religious beliefs... what would they choose? I'm no longer sure.

Read the Constitution,

Read the Constitution, Anonymous. It is not just for waving. This country was NOT founded on Christianity. It was founded on religious liberty for all.

The Founders remembered all to well the stupid religious wars of Europe and had no intention for repeating them here.

To "Anonymous" who wrote

To "Anonymous" who wrote "This country was founded on this thing called CHRISTIANITY" -- You need to go back to high school civics and LEARN THE FACTS. This country was NOT established as a "Christian nation" or "on Christianity." It was established by a group of people, some of whom were Christian, and some of whom were Deists, who together very purposefully declared that there would be NO law concerning the establishment of religion in America! They did NOT establish a "Church of America," specifically because they were escaping the persecution of a national church, the Church of England. YOU ARE FLAT OUT WRONG. And cowardly, to boot...to post anonymously!

oh dear, it's so funny when

oh dear, it's so funny when Christians claim this country was founded as a Christian state - the founding fathers were the progressive liberals of their day - freethinkers, humanists, definitely not anything like the Christian extremists that try to claim them.

The original colonies were formed by people fleeing from the oppression of living under state-determined religion. These conservative christians you see nowadays embody everything that the revolutionaries were fighting AGAINST - they are the epitome of all that is anti-American, and THAT is why America is failing!

this is horrible! I hope it

this is horrible! I hope it makes people realize how desperate and despicable religion truly is.

If they were really

If they were really Christians they would not coerce others, but the extreme evangelicals (who certainly seem to hate or want to convert Muslims) are behaving against US law. i heard that Pat Tillman was derided as "worm dirt" after his death because he was not a christian. Brotherly love in the US forces!

This is stinking

This is stinking scary...what is the difference between forcing our service personnel to go to a Christian event or a Mullah forcing his beliefs???

If there IS a God, WE need help NOW!! Save us from zealots of all religious stripes!!

(And Muslims wonder if the USA forces are Crusaders?)

“The day will come when

“The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.”—Thomas Jefferson

“Man once surrendering his reason has no remaining guard against absurdities…. Gullibility, which they call faith, takes the helm from the hand of reason and the mind becomes a wreck.”—Thomas Jefferson

“But a short time elapsed after the death of the great reformer of the Jewish religion before his principles were departed from by those who professed to be his special servants and perverted it into an engine enslaving mankind and aggrandizing their oppressors in Church and State.”—Thomas Jefferson

Dear Anonymous Christian

Dear Anonymous Christian Tyrant. The Treaty of Tripoli CLEARLY states "The United States of America is in NO sense founded on the Christian religion." Everyone one of you tyrants who 'try' to assert that this country was founded on ANY religion needs to go re-take history cause you're one complete failure. Why don't you go live in the Vatican you Holy Crusader piece of shit.

Religion is the root of all evil.

What's the difference? The

What's the difference? The brand of "Christianity" they listen to in the concert is the same one they have been indoctrinated with since the beginning of basic training. They worship the anti-Christ, Satan, and totally ignore the teachings of Jesus. They do, however, invoke the name of Jesus when they say: "Jesus Christ is my Savior. I get to go to heaven no matter how bad my crimes were, are, and will be."

The soldiers have the excuse of being brainwashed by top experts. Jeremy Riddle and such do not, although I will accept that lesser experts were probably involved.

Christians are probably the

Christians are probably the rarest of all religious practitioners. Most folks who call themselves that are really Jews who hate Jews; old Testament believers who are no more able to follow Jesus' suggestions than they are able to read the Constitution.

Babble like "Son get your ball back in ur pants and learn what you proble needed before you joined," is exactly the kind of idiot drivel these folks jabber to themselves to stay in line. There is nothing about superstition that is conducive to sustaining democracy. A key reason the founders were afraid of religion is that it is closely related to ignorance.

the army isn't a

the army isn't a democracy,however it seems the C/O used poor judgement in punishing them,,,,its not real scary;
, bayonet drill is a little scary,,,,the corrosion of the soul from killing in war is more than scary hopefully some god can gentle them and heal their wounds

The sooner we realize actual

The sooner we realize actual separation of church & state, the sooner we can get to the important business of running the country. All religion is delusional, and it clouds the real issues. Like the "Ground-Zero" muslim community center!

If you have any questions

If you have any questions regarding the religion that founded this country, read the Treaty of Tripoli, specifically Article 11. As for this, I do not see it as a sign that we are becoming more Christianized, I see it as a sign to the opposite, that this kind of thing is garnering attention and public outcry, rather than just being taken as "that's how it goes". Bravo to PFC Smith and I hope the Pentagon puts a boot in the ass of his commanding officers who put on this event.

A similar thing happened to

A similar thing happened to me. In 1966, when I was stationed at Fort Devens, MA, for training. It was a Friday night and we would normally have been free to roam the base. This usually meant sitting in the PX snack bar drinking a few beers. Passes were rare for us trainees fresh out of basic. On the evening in question while we were in formation at the end of the work day, we were 'invited' to the base chapel for some sort of Christian gathering. They asked for a show of hand of anyone did not want to go. Only a few of us raised our hands. We were directed to see a Sergeant whose name I don't recall. As the rest of the company marched toward the chapel, the sergeant told us we were restricted to the barracks. He also took our names. We were also harassed by some of the other soldiers when they returned to the barracks from the chapel.

At the time we didn't realize that they were violating our Constitutional rights so we just griped about it among ourselves.

During that time, the draft was in effect and the military included a vast spectrum of people with varied backgrounds and beliefs. The all volunteer military is far less diverse and has a Christian majority within the ranks. Abuses of those with other beliefs or no beliefs are much more common today as a visit to MRFF will quickly demonstrate. I urge everyone who respects our nation's Constitution to spread the word about the MRFF so that all members of our military know that there is a place that will support them.

What the military needs to

What the military needs to do is go back to "Old School" and take some of the comforts away from the basic and ait soldiers and let them see what it is really about. The government pays hundreds of thousands of dollars to train soldiers to go to war and follow the orders of the officers appointed over them. This Guardsman is what I consider as a part time soldier, someone who can't cut it in the real military, so therefore is trying to make a name for himself by fabricating a story to make him look good. If he want, he can take his balls out of his pocket and put them on like a man. As a new soldier in training you are required to march to everything as a group. Just because this one person did not get his way and could not stand out in his class, he is wanting his "5 minutes" of fame. People like this make me sick. These are the ones that are suppose to be defending this country, please. Grow up. There was no forcing of anyone to do anything. PVT Smith needs to get a clue and realize that he signed a contract to defend this country against all enemies.... foreign and domestic!!!! Not create more with his bogus story. He was not forced to march head on into battle but he has definitely chose to battle our countrymen. If he really filed a complaint then the installation would have known about it. Also why did it take three months for him to "stand up" and present something that bothered him way back then. I am truly proud to be an American and love this country. It seems to me that this issue could have been addressed at his base level. I do not recall him saying what outcome came of his complaint other than falling on deaf ears. If you know anything about EO/EEO you know that if you file a complaint then there WILL be outcome to it if it is substantiated.

I totally agree that the

I totally agree that the soldiers,on their free time, should not be forced to attend something of this nature. However, my concern is the two soldiers not obeying the commanding officer and falling out of ranks. Yes, they should not have been forced to go, but they refused to follow the order. As soldiers, they may be called upon to fight in a war to protect all of our rights not just the Christians or Muslims. Are they going to fall out of ranks if they are called upon to protect Jews or buddhists or atheists or homosexuals? They should have followed the orders and then filed their grievances, taking it all the way to the top.

Well, "What the military

Well, "What the military needs...," is fewer people like you. EOT people work for the installation commander and some may well do only his bidding. Others may do what's right.

But as director of Social Actions and Equal Opportunity and Treatment on a large Air Force Base in the mid 1970s, I was personally pressured by the deputy wing commander to order my people to attend the "President's National Prayer Breakfast." I refused to do so. None attended, and I did not do so myself. Two years later this colonel become my direct boss and handily nixed further promotion opportunities for me.

The colonel was later promoted to BG, but scuttlebutt is that he subsequently was forced to resign following discovery that he was diddling a subordinate's wife....

This is how the Nazis got

One if the big myths is that

One if the big myths is that America was founded by Christians to be a Christian nation. Some of the founders were devout Christians, but many were atheists.

The nation was founded on secular civic principles, with an appeal to God, or nature (in some cases a spiritual but not specificly religious view of the world), that the civil laws and rights are universal and obtained at birth.

Another myth is that the christianity of some of the founders was at all similar to modern Christian
movements. The truth is, the modern movements are
very unchristian, and unlike the Christianity found in
the early US.

Our 2nd president wrote his own version of the bible, which none of these churches would consider to be canon. Is that not proof enough that the modern pseudo-Christian beliefs are mis-representing history?

To the moronic "shut up and

To the moronic "shut up and follow orders" crowd, soldiers are legally, morally, and spiritually
bound to not obey any order that is illegal. Forcing soldiers to attend religious events for the purpose of
conversion is completely against the constitutional freedom of religion and separation of
church and state.

Just as Nazi prison guards were convicted despite
following orders, all US soldiers must know that
orders which are not lawful are not to be obeyed.

So many Christians, so few

So many Christians, so few lions.

When fascism comes to

When fascism comes to American, it will be wrapped in a cross and waving a flag. (Sinclair Lewis)

The posters who say he

The posters who say he should have just shut up & followed orders forget that there is a clearly defined limit to such obedience: when the order is clearly a wrong one, it is the duty of the soldier NOT to follow it. There can be no doubt that this forced Christian indoctrination is patently unconstitutional, & therefore wrong.

Anonymous at 1:33 OBVIOUSLY

Anonymous at 1:33 OBVIOUSLY has never been in the military. The idea that all complaints (especially of this variety) would be handled swiftly and efficaciously is ludicrous to anyone who has battled military bureaucracy.

The "evangelization" of the US military (especially, it seems, USAF and Army) is cause for great concern, and this general's command should be "terminated with extreme prejudice," as it was communicated to Captain Willard.

Dude, the writer of this

Dude, the writer of this article didn't even tell us what happened. Did the General get some kind of demotion? Did he get punished for forcing this on soldiers?

What the hell... is it even being investigated?

why do you repeat the same

why do you repeat the same paragraph twice and the same quote three times? great subject, but annoying read.

it is a punishable offense

it is a punishable offense under the uniform code of military justice to follow orders that are understood to be illegal.
if ordering them to a christian rally or event is illegal (it is, and violates the constitution that all soldiers are under oath to protect), pvt smith is absolutely right in his refusal and continued fight against being punished for it.

for the deliberately uninformed; this country was established by a group of christians who were persecuted by the crown. understanding that, they provided a clause that prohibits state sanctioned religious entities. it doesn't prohibit you from being any religion you want, you can even join and participate in scientology, which only masquerades as one.
what you can't do is use the government to favor or punish citizens or soldiers based on their religious beliefs, or force them to observe a religion.

Wild! Nothing gets me quite

Wild! Nothing gets me quite like these reports of spiritual abuse which come in all forms. This incident is more evident but the authoritative abuse can take on more subtle forms resulting in quiet fear and submission.

No more freedom of religion?

No more freedom of religion?

ummm to those who say this

ummm to those who say this country was founded as a christian country please read the TREATY OF TRIPOLY article 11 this was created by our first presidents white house and signed by the second president and recived a100% yea vote in congress.

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Being one of the soldiers

Being one of the soldiers that this happened to at Ft. Eustis it is good to see that the corrupt command over there is being investigated finally. EO complaints go to no where and are ignored. Everyone just pretty much got treated like a criminal until they could provide undeniable proof they were innocent. A lot of cadre not doing their jobs. It was quite a pathetic experience.

"...researchers with the

"...researchers with the MRFF later discovered that the Department of Defense has awarded multi-million dollar contracts for consultants behind spiritual fitness events..."

Does anyone else see this as problematic? This money would be better spent on the soldiers themselves and these entertainers should be donating their time for no compensation all in the name of support of our troops. Am I wrong to think that this sends the wrong message? Most importantly, soldiers make next to nothing, their yearly salaries are insulting and laughable. I'd rather that money went towards better living conditions, equipment, protective gear, weapons, living quarters, health care and mental health services, and towards a saving that ensures that once they return to us, they will be taken care of in a way that would be more respectful and appreciative of what they have sacrificed for us

Excellent, the last thing

Excellent, the last thing the world needs is more armed religious nuts with weapons. Yes, I can see how such delusions would be comforting while deal with the horrors of war, but the military has no business forcing it's people to drink the Kool-Aid.

Kudos for standing up for logic and reality Pvt. Smith.

And President Obama is

And President Obama is falling all over himself these days to assure everyone that he's a Christian, not a (shudder)Muslim! What he should be saying is. It is none of your damn business WHAT my religion is or isn't.

What we need is an openly atheist or agnostic candidate for President, or a nominee for the Supreme Court who has the courage to declare his/her non-beliefs.

America today is reminiscent of Rome, where the politicians paid elaborate public homage, sacrificing bulls and other hapless animals to the gods because pretending belief was a way to keep the plebs in line and stay in power.

I'm sure there are many atheists/agnostics holding office now who fear, probably with good reason, that they'd be unelected if their unbelief was known. Thomas Jefferson could not be elected dogcatcher today.

There is no freedom of/from religion in America.

I am a military spouse and

I am a military spouse and it really grinds my gears when I have to stand and pray at every military function (or at least stand and look polite). What is it that the military doesn't get about separation of church and state. I'm not against having chaplains, they do a lot of good, but why do they have to give invocations at every event?

They still sing "Onward

They still sing "Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war" in church. Christians need to get with it.

As an educator I would like

As an educator I would like to encourage "Anonymous" to read up on his/her U.S. history so as to be able to make judgments for him/herself. That's the beauty of education and research— it sets you free from the agendas of others. The Enlightenment Period would be a good starting place. It's a fascinating time which played a big role in the founding of this country.

Meanwhile, though we all get extremely frustrated with each others' viewpoints (and I'm as guilty as the next person), good arguments really don't need the kind of embellishments that include attacking a person. Bridges aren't built with dynamite but with patience. And we do want to build bridges, yes?

Joining the service is one

Joining the service is one thing, being forced into a particular liturgical corner is something else entirely different.

First Sunday in basic

First Sunday in basic training, they fall the company out for "church formation." First sergeant says "All Protestant personnel fall out to the left." Most of the company does. Then he yells, "All Catholic personnel fall out to the right." Rest of the company does--except for me (I was a nominal Jew back then).

I ended up pulling KP for the day. At first, I was pissed. Then I decided it kind of evened the score for my ancestors' killing of Christ, and I could finally put that behind me.

Now I realize I got off even easier than I thought. Ten hours of scrubbing pots and pans has got to be a lot easier to take than even a minute of listening to Christian Rock.

PS: Hope they hang that CG by his God-fearing balls.

Overtly religious military?

Overtly religious military? - only in America!

...oh, and Iran.

Coincidence?

As a Christian by

As a Christian by choice---although not the "right kind"---it is insulting and infuriating that people in authority are shoving their personal beliefs down everybody's throats.

On the other hand, I'm also fed up with religion haters blaming society's troubles on Jesus. Get a clue: The NWO elitists will use any set of beliefs, including humanist and atheist doctrine (yes, you are indoctrinated as much as anyone) to pit groups of people against one another in order to divide and conquer. THAT is what this is about---not the elevation of one religion above another. They couldn't care less about God or Allah or Buddha or any other god/dess. They see us---and that includes the Ft. Eustis commanders---as fodder for slavery or eradication.

Did any of you who are

Did any of you who are spouting off read the Army article, written well before this one, describing the General's intentions?

I thought not.

That would take too much effort. Everyone just wants to take jabs at each other.

What were the Generals

What were the Generals intentions, then, PCV? Could you link that article, please?

Generals are bound by secular laws too. It is illegal to make troops attend worship ceremonies.

Have you read the Constitution? Or did you just think you did that when you read the bible?

Any religion"s mortar is

Any religion"s mortar is faith. Facts are not relevant whenever faith is above independent thought... That is why governments and their military forces enjoy the mental conditioning that religions offer. FAITH IN THEIR BULL SHIT.

I'm reminded of another

I'm reminded of another article (some years now) about a high school sports coach who took a group of teenagers on a team to an evangelical event (there was some evangelical motivational speaker) -- but it was typical at his talks -- for people to go up in a fit of feeling and get baptized, thereby joining that faith. The principal of the school was also at the event, and they took one of the school buses to get there. The students had permission, but the parents didn't really get the full nature of the outing. Well, they went up and got baptized, the public school students. With a number of the parents quite upset, including a Catholic family. I don't know if they ever went to court with it. But I'm continually flabbergasted, hearing about this kind of total ethno-religious-centrism - whatever you want to call it. With, it seems, absolutely no grasp of where other people are coming from. Totally in their own world.

This would never have

This would never have happened in the military years ago when I served back in 91-96. A few years after I got out, I heard about the "time-out" cards in basic training and almost laughed myself to death. So this soldier doing what he's doing doesn't surprise me. They are too pampered nowdays. I was asked to do things I didn't particularly care for, but I did them anyway because of my oath and the orders came from my higher ups. Technically there is no "free time" for a soldier.

Soldiers are supposed to follow orders unless illegal. Having a soldier attend a christian concert is not illegal. I'm agnostic, not christian, but it wouldn't bother me to attend if that's what my commander asked and it was understood that it was more of an informal order. Of course, if it was a muslim event that wouldn't sit well with me, but I'd still do it.

Being in the military is NOT a job, it's a commitment based on chain of command. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, it's becoming just a "job" to people. I understand that the different branches offer different degrees of "militarism" depending on what people are looking for when they join, but no matter WHAT their reasons are for joining, when it comes down to it, you simply do NOT refuse it it, you just DO it and gripe about it with your buddies later.

This soldier makes me sad when I think that he thinks he's entitled to complain about something so simple.

Anyway....he just painted a bulls eye on his back...justifiably so.

This whole christianization

This whole christianization of our military is pissing me off. I hope to serve some day and if anyone, superior to me or not, punishes me or criticizes me for being atheist i would stand my ground and fight them. Its unacceptable that because you dont share ones faith that your automatically an "outsider", especially in the military. The separation of state and religion needs to be enforced alot more in the military, unfortunatly most higher uppers seem to be very religious, this needs to end. This nation was NOT founded on christian values.

"Smith and the other

"Smith and the other trainees"

ha.. what a retard!

Speaking from personal experience, Basic is not supposed to be some nice experience w/ green fields and unicorns and other mommy hold my hand stuff. its supposed to suck.

In basic you can go to church if you want and they offer all sorts of services.

If you dont go .. guess what.. your going to be on lockdown as you are ***100%*** of the time during basic and your going to be cleaning stuff (room, weapons etc etc)

NEWS FLASH BASIC IS 100% LOCKDOWN.

He was given a rare

He was given a rare opportunity to chill in Basic and he decided he wanted to go back to his barracks.

In basic your in lockdown 24/7.

I really do not even see the point in this story other than he is an idiot.

Don't know what it's like

Don't know what it's like now, but in Vietnam-era basic at Ft. Bragg we were confined to the company area for the first five weeks, with church attendance the exception. (Is that what you mean by "24/7 lockdown"?)

Once the barracks was cleaned to the drill sergeant's satisfaction, Sunday was stand-down time. Aside from my KP experience, I don't remember anyone getting extra duty for not going to church.

The issue here is not about pampering; it's about religious indoctrination--which is more in keeping with things like the Inquisition, communist "re-education" camps, and Taliban rule than it is with American traditions of liberty that give us not just freedom OF religion, but freedom FROM religion.

"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."--Thomas Jefferson

"Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other sects?" -- James Madison

"One of the embarrassing problems for the early nineteenth-century champions of the Christian faith was that not one of the first six Presidents of the United States was an orthodox Christian."--The Encyclopedia Britannica

As long as there are

As long as there are religions, there will be mass mind-control.

Okay the writing in this

Okay the writing in this article is terrible. This person obviously needed to fill space so they decided to use the quote from BarlowGirl 4 TIMES!!!! The quote is "f we would have known we would have said something."

Other than that, good for Private Smith. It is people like him that will one day make our government and officials honest.

Thomas Jeffersons letter, in

Thomas Jeffersons letter, in it's entirety, can be seen here:  http://tinyurl.com/2fq2gkl

The  previous posted quotations refer specifically to Calvinist ideals;  within the same  letter, Jefferson also professes a belief in a creator, a God.  What he disavows is the dogma of the Calvinists.

Separation of church and state was always argued for by the founders of the constitution, well aware of the dangers of a theocracy.    James Madison also alludes to the fact that the attempt to legislate faith, is in fact, a lack of faith.

As someone who does subscribe to Christian values, I couldn't agree more with Madison.     Religion, any religion, or participation in it's prosylitizing efforts, should not be imposed on anyone, ever, for any reason.    To do so it to act with a lack of faith.

To T Day, who said,

To T Day, who said, "Christians are probably the rarest of all religious practitioners. Most folks who call themselves that are really Jews who hate Jews; old Testament believers who are no more able to follow Jesus' suggestions than they are able to read the Constitution. "

You don't know squat about Judaism, so stuff it until you actually learn something. Jews are as varied in religious practice as are the denominations of Christians (Catholics, Baptists, Presbyterians, Russian Orthodox, for example). This Christian notion about how Jews are followers of some kind of eye-for-an-eye doctrine in the Old Testament, and Christians are followers of a turn-the-other-cheek doctrine is a bunch of B.S.

Over much of the last two millenia (until the founding of the State of Israel), the Jewish tradition in Christian nations has been mostly that of pacifism. Our experience at the hands of Christians has been similar to Jesus' experience at the hands of the Romans. If you want to call peaceful, saintly Christians the only real kind of Christians, go right ahead. But don't call the rest of them Jews. It is beyond offensive.

My father spent more time in

My father spent more time in military jails than the anonymous Christian ever spent in uniform.

Depending on the year, between 28% and 50% of the forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, have been Reserve and National Guard. They do so with honor and distinction. They are in the same combat zones as the Active component Soldiers. Bullets, rockets, mortars, IEDs, PTSD, injury, death... they don't distinguish between Active duty and "part time ... who can't cut it in the real military" Soldiers. Remember that the next time you feel the need to denigrate the service and honor of those part-time Soldiers.

Whenever there is an invocation or prayer in a cermony, I simply don't bow my head and participate. I'm a CO - I've had only one person question me afterwards, and my response was: "I'm not religious, I don't believe in god, I'm not going to pray. You are free to pray if you choose, I will not." And that was that.

simple break down church

simple break down

church state
commandments constitution

we are not a christian nation, even if there is a christian majority... we are not a christian nation. Get over it. If in the future if there is a muslim majority, we still won't be an islamic nation, thanks to the constitution.

"Onward christian soldiers",

"Onward christian soldiers", and, "Kill them all, God knows His own!" were the catchcries of the fundies. These are the type of people who will kill you, no remorse or guilt shown. Truly, God help us.

The majority of these

The majority of these comments cheer me! As a historian with a doctorate in American history (and a faithful Christian), I'm thrilled that there are many who remember their early history education and assert that America was NOT founded as a Christian nation, that many of the founders were NOT Christians, that the First Amendment guarantees freedom to practice their religion and does not establish any religion. A SPECIAL STAR to those who remembered the Treaty of Tripoli!! Wow, just when I thought political discourse in the US Had sunk to the level of the Dark Ages, there is hope!

To Anonymous at 01:33 and

To Anonymous at 01:33 and others from the "follow your orders!" crowd: your mindset would have made you model citizens in Nazi Germany!

All religions were created

All religions were created by various tribe leaders who could not explain lightning killing someone in a field, or how a " Dead" person (in a coma) could come back to life; or what Thunder was; or a Tornado; or Hurricane,(sp); etc, etc, etc.

The Greeks and Romans had more "GODS" than you can count. An Egyptian came up with the "One God" concept, but when he died, everyone reverted to their old many Gods list. Then the Jews came up with a one God concept that held; which Cristians and Muslims both adopted. Unfortunately, all religions are based on myth and mumbo jumbo.

i had a DI at Fort Ord back

i had a DI at Fort Ord back in 69 who punished those of us who didn't attend church services.
A few of us complained and we spent time in the stockade for refusing a direct order until JAG got involved, but the damage was already done.
the time spent in the stockade followed me for over 8 years when I was finally told I would never advance in rank above E-5 because of my "prison record".
Personally i believe Pvt. Smith shot himself in the foot and he will be the target to his superiors for the rest of his days in service.

A few years ago, there was

A few years ago, there was an article in a large and well known national magazine (I forget which) which warned how the evangelical christians were taking over the Air Force Acadamy, forcing recruits to attend services, and forcing them to listen to stand there while higher ranks prophestize to them, unable to say or do anything in defense, because of rank.

Now I see they've moved to another branch as well. This MUST stop.

I swear, the Abrahamic religions are going to tear this world apart arguing over STUPID DETAILS as they try to take a part in their end of days. Well, I say, go ahead. Hurry the heck up and go, so the rest of us can get on in peace!

I applaud the PFC for his courage to continue to fight for his rights even when doors were slammed in his face at first. That he persevered is remarkable. And THAT is the type of soldier we need defending this country, a country based on FREEDOM of RELIGION and DISCRIMINATION. NOT christianity.

OH, and btw, I take bloody exception to the fact that this comment window's spell checker insists that christianity is misspelled unless capitalized, while paganism is not.

American Democracy was

American Democracy was murdered long ago and the final blow was in 2000 when Bush stole the election. Do you know he frequently called upon a christian minister for advice on Mid East policy? A minister, who by the way is doing everything he can to make sure that "armagedon" really happens so "jesus" can come back and reward him and his little army of Nazis by taking them to heaven. America is broken badly and should be broken up and segregated into reasonable people and the retards who can't seperate church and state

Weinstein is just afraid

Weinstein is just afraid because the Dominionists are the only Christians out there that dont bow down to Jewish racism and desire to enslave Mankind. Thats it...they tolerate Catholics, most mainline Protestants, Rapturites because this are their tools, the Dominionists (and perhaps Eastern Orthodoxy) are the only ones out there that push back against the Jew Nazis.

Does the Commanding

Does the Commanding General's Spiritual Fitness Concert by any chance originate from private funders such as the Koch brothers? Can the Commanding Generals be investigated for being proxy to private interest groups such as the one which created the Tea Party crowd? Watch out. A similar condition with a religious bent came to exist in the Wehrmacht after WW I. Over twenty years fascism emerged in Germany, then to complete its formation into the Third Reich.
