WikiLeaks and Our Boorish "in Your Face" Diplomacy
Friday 03 December 2010
by: William Astore | Huffington Post | Op-Ed
While the mainstream media focuses on whether Julian Assange is a sex criminal in charge of a terrorist organization, I got a rude reminder of my own sense of unease at the latest revelations from WikiLeaks. It came unexpectedly at a local restaurant. Together with a friend and my wife, I went out to dinner, only to be seated next to a well lubricated group celebrating the fiftieth birthday party of some unfortunate soul on the receiving end of black "Over the Hill" balloons and alcohol-fueled off-color jokes. Between the loud clapping, the table thumping, and the incessant cackling, we couldn't hear ourselves think, let alone talk. I'd blame the restaurant for sitting us next to a remarkably boisterous and oblivious group of people - except the people weren't oblivious. They knew they were loud, and they simply didn't care. To them, we didn't exist.
After we asked the restaurant staff to move us, I could hear the partiers snickering about how selfish we were in wanting them to be just a little bit quieter (actually, we just wanted them to stop clapping in our ears like five-year-olds). As we got up to move, a spokesperson for the birthday group said they were sorry, but they were in a public place and could therefore enjoy themselves however they wanted. In other words, she was saying we were the intolerant ones for asking to move away from their clapping and foot-stomping and yelling. When I replied that I had no objection to their having a good time, as long as their behavior didn't ruin the good times of others, another partier told me that I should have stayed home. If only I had.
Boorish, "in your face" behavior is everywhere. Most of the time, I'm able to avoid it, or walk away from it, but not tonight. Even as we walked away from the restaurant and passed our loud partiers at the curb, one of them spied us and sneeringly said, "Oooh, everyone be quiet now." We just kept walking.
Afoot in America is an astonishing sense of imperious entitlement. People are told they can have it all - heck, that they deserve it all - and to hell with anyone who raises an objection. Rugged individualism is not enough; roughshod individualism is the new American ethos.
Now, what has this to say about WikiLeaks? Take a close look at many of the State Department cables and tell me how you would feel to be on the receiving end of roughshod American imperiousness. So what if we kidnap the wrong German citizen and torture him? Not only do we have no need to apologize: We'll even bully the German government into silence. And we can bully Spain too, if need be, to inhibit Spanish attempts to prosecute Americans for torture or murder. Need more information about the United Nations and its diplomats? Let's not only spy on them in traditional ways, but let's steal their passwords, their biometric data: Heck, let's even take DNA samples from them. If they complain, too bad: They shouldn't have taken a drink from the cup we offered them. And the list goes on: We'll even strike secret deals with Britain to hide our cluster bombs.
In these memos, it never seems to be America's fault. Being a loud and boorish and imperious American means never having contritely to say you're sorry. I got a reminder of that tonight at a local eatery; it seems many different peoples around the world get their reminders from their local American embassies.
Are we oblivious? Do we just don't care? Neither question will matter if the resentments we breed overseas find their way to America's homeland. Doubtless we'll be partying loudly and obnoxiously until the bitter end.

As for the rest of the world doing something about American behaviour, well, lets put it this way...
I good subject top look up is; how much of the liveable land and pottable(sp) is really owned by the U.S as opposed to foreign investment or interest.
Also, I recall what the head of the middleast branch of Newsweek once said to Charlie Rose;
" There are ( at the time he mentioned this) 1 Billion Muslims in the world, I honestly beleive you'd notice if they all declared Jyhad."
My point to the mention of these two factoids...
Wikileaks has only pointed out the obvious, or rather, like so many before them, held up a mirror to the citizenry of the U.S. and said " See for yourself"
You're absolutely right!

"Afoot in America is an astonishing sense of imperious entitlement. People are told they can have it all - heck, that they deserve it all - and to hell with anyone who raises an objection. Rugged individualism is not enough; roughshod individualism is the new American ethos."
I have been trying to deal with exactly this sense of imperious entitlement, and finding it absolutely EVERYWHERE. And, like Prof. Astore here, I generally do whatever I can to avoid it. But, it literally surrounds us.
Example, the very new and unprecedented airport security procedures that violate our personal privacy all over the place. Heard one moron passenger tell another one who was protesting this violation, that he/she had a "right" NOT to fly. IOW, if you don't want to submit to a manipulation of your genitals, then you have a right NOT to use commercial air transportation. This is such bullying authoritarianism, aided and abetted by our fellow (moron) US citizens.
The reaction to the Wikileaks is no different than the reactions of any family or group of mentally unstable people who conduct their lives in secrecy and denial. In fact, the secrecy and denial are at the core of nearly every dysfunctional relationship in this country. They are all individual threads (or microcosms) that make up the lager social fabric. Secrecy and denial.

Oh well, let's smile at the grand daughter.

Ripping the cover off the lie is only to expose the machinations that necessitated it. Face it, folks. We pretty much appointed these people to do what they do, but we do not want to know how they get it done because it might reflect on our own moral paucity.

Sat, 12/04/2010 - 17:14 — PREHISTORIC JIM (not verified)I'm an American and I can easlily see that the average US citizen is the most self absorbed, stupid, boorish, person on the face of the planet. Sports, American Idol, etc. consumes them while they pay no attention at all to what their government is doing in other countries. They are extremely ignorant... and very proud of it! Turning off the non-stop 24 hour-everywhere-you-go propaganda machines (that's a "TV" to you stupid Americans) would go a long way towards everyone re-claiming their sanity. They are being blatantly brainwashed... and unfortunately most Americans only need a light rinse! THE WHOLE WORLD WILL HAVE TO UNITE TO BEAT BACK THE FASCIST AMERICANS... just like they had to beat back Hitler. What the hell is everyone waiting for?
GO WIKILEAKS!!!
The behavior has been sown
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 17:41 — Anonymous (not verified)The behavior has been sown and it is Bullying
The T-Party, George W Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld are all bullies and their sneering, ignorant, reactionary behavior went/goes uncorrected.
There is no surprise that bullying is epidemic - the media condones it
Back in the day, this behavior was frowned upon, expectation of personal betterment was the norm, but now the crass is encouraged and I lay it at the feet of the mainstream media. MSM is the tool of the monied class and they are playing the herd. It Keeps them in power and we, the masses fall for it every time.
Thank you for this article.
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 17:44 — msisnothappy (not verified)Thank you for this article. I have been struggling with my fellow American's behavior for some time now and I'm glad to see there are many of us out here who actually recognize how far over the line of human decency we've stepped. I am continually appalled at the hubris, lack of compassion and ugly self-aggrandizement that is so prevalent in every part of US society. We've become like spoiled little children and we need a good smack across the head and a little lecture on how to behave.

Sat, 12/04/2010 - 18:10 — Dr. Bill Bushing (not verified)I, too, am appalled by the behavior I observe around me daily. The relative few who actually display common courtesy these days are such rarities that they stand out like a brilliant star in a dark sky.
Many times I have been walking along a wide sidewalk carrying 150 lbs of gear on a hand cart when a group of 6 to a dozen or more people will come walking towards me spread out over the entire walkway and show no sign of yielding to me. On one side is a wall and on the other the ocean.
Every day I have people walk out of stores directly into my path as I walk on the sidewalk and not stop. I have had people look right at me and stop dead in front of me.
This behavior has not been limited to the youth of today. I have seen it in seniors my own age and even my parent's age.
So I guess some of our diplomatic corps are merely extending such behavior into the international arena. Will we once more become the Ugly American?
As for TV and its absurd fare, my TV antenna blew off the roof a year ago and I have not seen any good reason to replace it. Now I just use my TVs to watch DVDs... mostly subtitled foreign films rather than Hollywood pap.

There's nothing "new" about roughshod individualism in America, cowboy.

Hell, just ask the Native Americans and the African Americans.
We've been [global douche] bags for a long, long time.

I don't think it's that
Sat, 12/04/2010 - 20:01 — Anonymous (not verified)I don't think it's that Americans have become more boorish, rude or obnoxious. I think what has happened is that they are now more comfortable with being this way wherever you go. There used to be a time, not so long ago, when other people felt able and willing to call such buffoons out on their priggish behavior. This correction of fellow citizens has diminished, prodded in large part by the increasingly violent responses that such self entitled people display. I say, it's high time we go back to correcting someone and holding our ground, unless, that is, we are willing to accept this continued slide toward bottom of the barrel behavior.

Sat, 12/04/2010 - 21:01 — Neal Feldman (not verified)Well... keep in mind the real definition of 'diplomacy'... saying "nice doggy' while you look for a sharp rock.
It would appear that (topic of their tirades aside for the moment) that the Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps are just your basic run of the mill Americans.
Politeness and contemplation before acting are seen as weakness. The only thing some Americans respect seems to be blind arrogance and shooting from the hip. Explains a lot how Shrub and his little Dick got re-elected after stealing the 2000 US Presidential election, doesn't it?
Currently Obama is seen as a milquetoast with a rubber spine and no testicles. I cannot really say I disagree with that description of him at this point. He promised mountains and we are still waiting for the merest molehill to be delivered.
Ah well...

Prof. Astore, I could not
Sun, 12/05/2010 - 01:12 — FBuckley (not verified)Prof. Astore, I could not agree more. What you experienced, the term for that behavior is “disconnected.” There are people that run around all over our society, hiding behind computer screens, in incredibly abusive jobs (feeling Junk, running jails, flying Predator Drones, spying on anyone for some made up reason) or in your face, that don't get the damage and devastation that they cause and create. None. The disconnect is an arrogance and insouciance - and it tends to come with wealth and power. Then there is the heartless man, Dick Cheney, who shows us the stuff of which he is made. Oh to waterboard the crap out of him for the "actionable Intel he might have?" I am all for the Warrant for his arrest. Hopefully, the torture will be thrown in for free. What's a little torture among friends?
Notably, there is a mindset of Corporatism, aka Fascism, where these very same behaviors were crapped on all of us years ago....back in the 30's. They were the heyday of the Fascists, National Socialists. The communists by that time had already been completely subjugated. For the Communists, that kind of behavior would be an opener for disappearance or worse, summary silence (execution). Unless of course it was Party Members. Do as I say, not as I do. Largely a Republican motto.
There is a large portion of the Public that is now openly hostile to the poor, the intellectuals, the educated, working class that is barely surviving...in other words anyone that is not them. They are those that have been and are largely rewarded for the Depression. They are the ones that did business with the elite or were the elite...the bankers, the brokers, the government civil servants, the cops, the firemen, the spies, the necessary infrastructure individuals that were needed to keep "the trains and planes moving." The Wall Streeters (not the Main Streeters) sat back and laughed. But, the pigs at the trough are still laughing. And that is the tragedy. It is every man, woman and child for themselves.
If you have a problem with greedy bankers, fees, policies, rapacious Credit Cards, Identity Theft or you have the Plague....or Cancer...it is obviously YOUR problem and there cannot possibly be tens of millions or hundreds of millions of people experiencing these problems. This is the separation of individual from common cause. And yes, Professor, you profoundly experienced a common event in the now special reward or treat of even being able to go out for a meal. Can we find a happy median?...not likely. It is imbued from the top. The WikiLeaks just Prove it. The span of the insults and destruction of our country are largely the Culture of this corruption....that from the disconnected, the torturers, the kidnappers, jailers, the corrupt politicians, the druggies, the gangs, and the government thugs, the remote controlled Predators, never ending surveillance and spying: this requires anyone with a brain or is remotely aware to scream about the outrage and just shutdown.
But who will listen? Certainly not THOSE partiers. Who will listen? Certainly not THOSE politicians. And listening, but continuing to do the same old, same old is just insanity. The more people remain disconnected from family, friends, community, and social responsibility, the less we will see as hope for change and accountability for progress.

Sun, 12/05/2010 - 11:37 — Bill O'Rights (not verified)Prehistoric Jim - You should get out a little bit - lots and lots of ignorance in this world - the US does not have the corner on ignorance or apathy or greed or corruption - it is worldwide. Watch what you wish for in your 'the whole world should beat up America' fantasy - the world would be a lot better place if all of the consolidation and centralization of power that has occurred were to reverse and we returned to a lot of small countries not controlled by banks and international organizations/ alliances. I'll take the continuing hostilities of squabbling nations over a tyrannical world government, or being ruled by say, China/Russia any day. Some other world dominating force 'teaching America a lesson' will likely be much closer to the Hitlerian horror you reminded us of.

Sun, 12/05/2010 - 17:09 — Anonymous (not verified)Somehow I doubt dispatches from our diplomats abroad are any ruder that those of our foes and allies where we are concerned. Ever wonder how the Israelis and and Arabs refer to us? Stupid goyim and perfidious infidels is probably the kindest you will hear. After all, the job of our diplomats abroad is to give an honest assessment of those our govt must deal with. This whole affair is just a tempest in a teapot.
